It was all there too...

WR breaking inside on a post route, Todd Reesing avoiding pressure and putting just about the perfect amount of touch on the ball, about to complete a game-winning touchdown pass catapulting KU into the top-10…
…And then their safety makes a hell of a play and goes up and catches the ball at the absolute top of his leap…and returns it 35 yards to remove any possibility of overtime.
More than any game last year (well, maybe the Nebraska game, but we were beat up a good amount in that one), the USF lost hurt the most because we had that game.

Yep -

we had that game won. Except I interpret the play slightly differently. To me it was a poorly thrown deep ball. Todd was off-balance when he threw it. He was so sharp the whole night, he made some amazing throws that game.

Other things about that game:
We found out that Kerry Meier could take a hit
Had the breeze not pushed a wide right kick between the uprights we would have won
Selvie>Spikes
Jonathan Wilson is good

You bring up an interesting point with Reesing. For as good as he is, he does throw a lot of his back foot and off balance. Sometimes at no fault of his own, but other times it is. It concerns me a bit because in watching spring game highlights he almost seemed to routinely throw off the back foot. His arm strength isn’t off the charts to begin with and that’s fine, but I just hope he steps into his throws whenever possible to avoid mistakes.

by Owen on Sep 3, 2009 10:59 AM CDT up reply actions

Yes.

Reesing underthrew it by a solid 5 yards-or-so.

Raymond Brown was slowing down at that point, and reaching behind him. If it was 5 yards further out, Raymond Brown catches it and is tackled near field goal range, or the safety goes for the pick, misses, and we score a TD and win the game.

It’s tough to “blame” him, or anything, and it was Todd that was the key component in bringing us back and scoring those two touchdowns late. But it was not a good play by Todd. At all.

by rockchalk on Sep 3, 2009 11:03 AM CDT up reply actions

nope - not blaming at all

The 1st half was some of the best QB play I’ve seen. It was a joy to watch.

The sad thing about that interception was it was just one of those balls that never should have been thrown. There was no need for that play and Todd forced that ball which is so rare for him to do.

I blame the man upstairs. If you watch the winning kick, it was going way wide-right. Then you saw the flags kick up and the ball magically start drifting just inside the left upright. I watched it 4-5 times on my DVR just because it was such an amazing play.

ESPNU just replayed the game again last week – that is why it’s so fresh…

I just saw the replay a month-or-so ago.

I disagree, though, that the ball shouldn’t have been thrown. After the game, Todd said something to the effect of “I don’t regret the decision, I just wish I threw it farther”. I agree with him. Raymond was open, and if we complete the pass, we probably win. It was worth the risk.

It was just a bad throw. And yeah, throwing off of his back foot certainly couldn’t have helped him. But I don’t think it was necessarily a bad decision.

by rockchalk on Sep 3, 2009 11:41 AM CDT up reply actions

but we win even if we don't complete the pass.

We didn’t need a score. We just needed to move the ball down the field. An interception is the last thing we wanted. It would have been better off to throw it away and come back the next down. But that’s me…

Yeah, but we were a LONG way from field goal range.

Weren’t we like at our own 35ish range, so that’s another 35 yards before you can even begin talking field goal, really. And there was like 45 seconds left.

We had to make up a lot of ground in not a lot of time. The one pass to Raymond would have gotten a large chunk of that yardage, if not all of it, and he was open. The pass was just underthrown.

by rockchalk on Sep 3, 2009 12:56 PM CDT up reply actions

We were tied at that point

If I recall we had 2 TO’s and a little over a minute. Even tho we run the spread we’re not a throw-it-deep kind of offense. Our WR are so good in space that our strength lies in quick hitting routes on 1on1 DB’s and breaking big gains.

It could go either way, I just wished it hadn’t. Oh, well. They’ve learned their lesson for UTEP…

There was 30 seconds left

on South Florida’s first play after the interception. So, assuming the pick-and-run-back too like 7ish seconds, which is probably way longer than it actually took, there couldn’t have been more than 40ish seconds on the clock at the snap.

That’s not a whole lot of time to get 35 yards. And even then, we would have had to knock down a 48-yard field goal.

Both sides have legitimate arguments.

It’s nice to be able to argue about football, though.

Especially since real live games are going to be on in 3 hours!

It was like the only #2 picture I could find.

Plus, it’s always good to have a little bit of motivation right before the season.

South Carolina vs. NC State at 7 EST

Oregon vs. Boise State at 10 15 EST.

Those are on ESPN.

There are a couple of other games on regional networks and a whole host on ESPN360.com and other websites like that, but that’s pretty much it for nationally televised broadcasts.

Well, those two and North Texas @ Ball State, which also starts at 7 and will be shown on ESPNU.

What a crazy game

Play I’ll remember most is the “no look pass” that Reesing through to wilson for that TD where he made a really great catch. Reesing pointed way left, I think, and then just floated one deep over the middle. I was shocked.

by I need more Esteban on Sep 3, 2009 1:31 PM CDT reply actions

If we're thinking of the same one

and I’m sure we are, I’m pretty sure he was pointing at Wilson to get to the spot. I don’t know. Maybe I was wrong. That’s what I always thought it was. He seemed to be pointing right where the catch was made, though.

We need to get a ruling. Maybe I’m going crazy.

by rockchalk on Sep 3, 2009 2:21 PM CDT up reply actions

See I've only seen it a handful of times

but to me it looked like was pointing to the other side of the field in order to get some attention going that way. Then he hurled the ball over the middle while almost looking the defenders the other way. It’s a move I constantly did on the basketball court with my eyes so that is probably why I interpreted it that way, you may be correct, though. I’d be curious to see it again.

by I need more Esteban on Sep 3, 2009 4:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, I'm not sure or anything.

It’s tough to tell exactly where he’s pointing from far out. So, probably, however you interpreted it live, that’s what you see when you re-watch it, because you could see both if you look hard enough.

I assumed he was pointing to the spot when I watched it, so when I watch it again that’s what I see.

I do wanna see it again, though, just to see what’s up.
