Everybody Rejoice! Kansas Jayhawks Hold On to Beat Southern Miss 35-28

Ku_fbc_usm_1st_20half_rg_20017_t640_medium

Oh yes! We won!

That's about all I can muster right now, but hey, that's all that really matters. We won. 35-28. I was freaking out. I'm sure all of you were too.

But, it'll be a good learning experience. And we all saw how awesome Toben Opuurm can be.

Oh, and one more thing. I love Kerry Meier.

Here is your Open Game Thread for the rest of the day. Use it however you want. Have fun. I'll be watching football for the vast majority of the day, so come and join me. Come on come on come on. You know you want to.

In related news, I miss college. Memorial and its surroundings just seemed to be even more peppered with young hotties than usual.

I noticed that last weekend

maybe it’s because I was hardly single during college, the warm weather makes for great gazing

Roll tide!

Yes it is

Then we don’t have to listen to the praising of Football Jesus in the NC.

I took Oregon to win

flat out there. Good odds, and it seems Cal always looks great early, then has a clunker somewhere.

by hunter s. royal on Sep 26, 2009 3:54 PM CDT up reply actions

I didn't think we were as awful as everyone is trying to make it

and I don’t understand the Cassel hate already, I thought he looked pretty good save a couple mistakes

by I need more Esteban on Sep 26, 2009 4:44 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't know what youa re talking about.

I haven’t touched anything Chiefs-related since the game. That should continue.

I’ll go to the OGT tomorrow at AP. Fight off some crazies. Moveon with my life.

Are people freaking out in KC? 0-8 talk? 0-16 talk?

Geez, I hate overreactions.

I don't get too much into it

but talk radio has been all over the “qb controversy” bs…it’s annoying but kind of their job to do it

Checking in

Indiana got a terrible call against Michigan. How do they call that an interception? Stupid.

Wow, glad we survived this game. I’m a little scared for Big 12 play, though.

Insanity is just a state of mind.

by KTJ on Sep 26, 2009 4:23 PM CDT reply actions

Refs were pretty shaky today, marred some good rhythym on offense

but I thought that the ’Hawks looked crisper on offense than they had at any point this year. Third and 12? No problem, 14 yards to Meier. Third and 7? Paging Jonny Wilson. First down. And on and on.

I like the way things are shaping up on O. They are still verrrryyyyy iffy in the secondary, and although SoMiss has some very nice players, most o-coordinators could have had a field day against the KU pass defense.

by JayhawkTom on Sep 26, 2009 5:50 PM CDT up reply actions

80 yards of offense in the 2nd half

I don’t know what to make of this game…we never trailed but could never put them away.

even with a HUGE edge in offense and +2 on turnovers at the half we’re only up 7…not to mention that we absolutely owned the clock for most of the game (for some reason I can’t find TOP).

our defense sucked ass for most of the game but came up huge when it was necessary, why couldn’t we do that the whole game? there was hardly any pressure on their QB AND we couldn’t cover that fat-ass TE of theirs.

I thought our gameplan was very curious, it seemed to be to hold onto the ball as much as possible, almost like Mangino acknowledged a talent differential in their favor and wanted to take the air out of the ball.

It was a masterfully managed game by Mangino, I thought, if it wasn’t for Toben’s fumble we probably win by 14 or at least 7 with no worry about a tie.

Florida 31-Kentucky 0 after the first quarter.

Perhaps Rich Brooks(UK coach) should worry less about tweeting Calipari’s smack talk and more about preparing his team. Perhaps the only game I’ll root for Florida in.

by hunter s. royal on Sep 26, 2009 6:15 PM CDT reply actions

I was at the game

Heart-attack central. Really the game should have been iced early on. We got to the So. Miss 30 twice with no resulting points, then when we got up 28-14 I thought we’d be ok. Then we get the ball in great field position in their territory due to Patterson’s return and go backwards 25 yards, then we score, then we blow icing the game due to Toben’s fumble (I was livid then. We could have taken three knees and kicked a FG and that would have been it).

All in all though, a good test for the team. So. Miss was well coached, disciplined, aggressive and had talent on both ends of the ball (mostly on O). It was last year all over again with no pass rush (till that last sack thank god) but our secondary played really well. Their plays came from screens, the TE sneaking out, stuff like that. Stuff that can be corrected more than strait up DB vs. WR play. Pass rush needs to improve a bit, maybe we need a few creative blitzs to throw in. It looks like we can because the secondary is covering well.

Lets take this win, never speak of it again, use the experience and spend a week off to get everyone firing on all cylinders. IMO, we still aren’t playing like we could, and we will keep winning on superior talent for only so long.

by rockchalk on Sep 26, 2009 8:52 PM CDT up reply actions

God I'm starting to despise

the Weis era at Notre Dame. They play a bumbling game when they have superior talent, blow the lead late, are bailed out by some horrific defensive clock management by Purdue(ND is stopped at the Purdue 4 on 2nd down & 36 seconds left with no TO’s,and are trying to spike the ball to stop the clock when Purdue calls a timeout) and then Jimmy Clausen races around the field mugging for the camera and bobbing his head like he’s a gangster rapper when they slop a TD out on 4th down. They sucked against a bad team and almost blow the game, are saved by the other team’s even greater incompetence, yet celebrate as if they just finished an undefeated season. A brilliant history bestows no class or competence upon the present.

by hunter s. royal on Sep 26, 2009 10:38 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah Weis just keeps that team hanging by a thread

I’m a catholic (at least raised, college hit and I haven’t been as active church wise, its Lawrence’s fault for being too much fun) and I used to pull for ND just because of that, if it was a game I didn’t really care about and if they played a big10 team because my parents are Wisconsin alums and fans so I rooted against their rivals.

But these days…I’m all with ya Royal. Front Butt really irks me, Clausen irks me, the team…yeah. I’m starting to really root for them to lose.

by KU Grad 08 on Sep 26, 2009 10:42 PM CDT up reply actions

They did give me a good laugh.

My daughter saw the ND abbreviation and wondered why North Dakota was playing on national TV.

by hunter s. royal on Sep 26, 2009 10:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Ughhh Jimmy Clausen

I used to talk to him…Cocky douchebag…Although I did tell him to do something for me at their bowl game if he threw a TD and he did it…I guess that was cool…still…douchebag

by jco8394 on Sep 26, 2009 10:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Yea, I can certainly see them being happy

they pulled out a win late, but the head-bobbing imitation rapper look of Clausen was pathetic. Oh well, if you want the publicity without having to actually perform competently, ND’s the place to go.

So...

Houston and T Tech is a hell of a game.

Question:

When did Yosemite Sam become Tech’s QB?

by jco8394 on Sep 26, 2009 11:28 PM CDT reply actions

I'd say when Mike Leach was hired-

wouldn’t Yosemite Sam be Leach’s dream QB?

Cross between that and a pirate.

Leach loves the pirates. It’s odd though, for a guy who seems to want lots of publicity for being oddball, he gets incredibly pissy with the press. Strange guy.

by hunter s. royal on Sep 26, 2009 11:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Haha didn't he get asked

about the run game or something at halftime and he said something like “We’re just running the ball” Idk I butchered the quotes but yeah

Leach is funny.

This game is awesome. I wanted to go to bed but I def gotta watch the end. That goal-line stand was huge. Holy crap he fumbled the end around. Holy crap he picked it up, holy crap.

I can’t remember whether it was the LJW or KC Star, but they just ran a big story on Highland Park being coached by a half dozen former KU football players. Guess the recent rumbles are maybe not a coincidence.

Its KState though.

I mean if were them, had a school down the road who beat you in every meaningful sport (they will cite women’s hoops or something but I’m not going there we’ll stick to football and hoops) and constantly finished higher, you may act the same way too.

You guys are jerks.

But yeah, I’m kind of with you.

I just hate the whole notion of writing stuff on other schools. Like, you know what I mean? I focus on Kansas. Now, when some other school does something stupid, throw up a fanshot. But I don’t see the need to write multiple articles about it. I don’t think anybody really cares.

I love the guys at BOTC. Love ‘em to death. They are my SBN writing heroes, with RMN my SBN stats/content heroes, and I try to fuse the two here at RCT. I’m being honest here. I look to both for my shit.

But it pisses me off. However, let’s not be jerks back. The comments at BOTC were fine, but easy on the ones here.

They aren’t going to ban you. This isn’t Phog.Net or something. It isn’t a freaking message board. Respectful discussion is encouraged, no matter how opposite it is. As long as you aren’t a total dick in presentation, you’re cool.

So, basically, just don’t be a dick. Please.

by rockchalk on Sep 27, 2009 2:06 AM CDT reply actions

I don't feel like I was being a dick

I suggested they stick to covering KState stuff (as boring and trying as that may be), and with the Ron Prince buyout and general seediness of the Snyder era, well people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.

I just love how the only articles with comments are ones taking shots at KU. So I suppose we can’t be too offended, they just need some comments.

by KU Grad 08 on Sep 27, 2009 10:15 AM CDT up reply actions
