T2 in the hospital? Football and Basketball team members fighting? In the Burge Union Parking lot where I park my car to go to school every day?

Sheesh.

Yeah, uh, this isn't good. At all.

Obviously, too early to say anything for sure, but it certainly isn’t good news.

This can be potentially worst than disastrous.

Maybe I’m overreacting, but hospitalization is never good, especially when it involves one of our best basketball players.

Prepare for fallout.

Do we know what football players

Are any of our guys off-campus.

Burge Union has always been a little rough around the edges. Though, I do remember one of the coolest conversations I’ve ever had took place there when Jacque Vaughn sat down next to me my freshman year and we chatted for a good half hour or so…

this initial report is kind of shocking, really hope it isn’t true because it could turn into kind of a big deal

by I need more Esteban on Sep 22, 2009 10:56 PM CDT reply actions

God damn it.

It’s always two steps forward, one step back, isn’t it?

We’ll probably never know what really happened, but these things usually involve women, money, drugs, or stupid regionalism BS. Is anyone on the football team from the Northeast?

McDougald is from Ohio- doubt there’s any natural beef there with Jersey City. I once read an article about Sherron Collins’ upbringing that said there’s a code in Chicago that gangs aren’t to mess with promising athletes from the area. This probably isn’t true in other areas- remember J.R. Giddens?

by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Sep 22, 2009 11:10 PM CDT reply actions

Damn this makes me nervous

I feel like Mangino won’t hesitate to suspend someone for the season or even boot them off the team, the latter being more likely. This is scary.

Just got update from one my friends on team

Guess anthony davis was messing with bball players girl and b ball players said they were gonna jump him. he called some football players and fight broke out… he;s giving me more details when he finds out so ill try and keep yall updated

by rockchalks7 on Sep 22, 2009 11:12 PM CDT reply actions

Interesting

OBVIOUSLY THIS IS ALL SPECULATION BASED UPON A RUMOR

I would imagine that players tend to hang out with their position groups the most, or at least their side of the ball. Davis is a CB, so these guys could be other people in the secondary, or at least defensive players.

I really, really hope Briscoe didn’t just throw his career down the drain.

by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Sep 22, 2009 11:22 PM CDT reply actions

It takes 2 to tango

which is less of a commentary about the fight than it is about the cause. If it was just a dance, then there’s nothing to fight about. If it was more than dancing, then she isn’t worth your time – TT & AD, etc.

The thing that is a bit more disconcerting is an insinuation by Keegan in the LJW that there are lots of skirmishes between the 2 teams that go unreported b/c no one goes to the hosiptal.

Guys fighting over a girl. What a shocker. Adolescent testosterone at it’s best. This kind of stuff happens thousands of times over at any school. It is only national news when it includes athletes from elite programs. Not sure that anything MM or BS or even Lew Perkins could say to them that would stop something like this in the heat of a moment.

by eastcoasthawk on Sep 23, 2009 7:30 AM CDT reply actions

Hey....

You all are looking at this completely the wrong way. If we ever had a signal that our football team mattered it was this!! Reading through the thread it seems folks are saying that a KANSAS FOOTBALL player…was able to steal the girl of a KANSAS BASKETBALL player which led to fisticuffs. 6 years ago, I don’t even know if the basketball team could have identified the football team let alone feel threatened by them. This is PROGRESS!!!!

All kidding aside, boys will be boys…this is stupid but Tyshawn is going to feel the brunt of this if he’s injured for any significant time. All you can do is live and learn.

Also this sounds like it was just a scuffle and Tyshawn dislocated a finger due to poor punch throwing form. Stuff like this happens at every bar on every college campus almost every night of the weekend so I could care less regardless of what the media choose to make of it.

I think there won’t be any expulsions from the football team either – i feel as though Mangino was much more pissed about the previous incident with Crawford because it was an intra-team matter. His guys are sticking up for each other in this case.

good god...

now this is becoming annoying. Seems to me that at the very least the basketball players should have the common sense here to know this isn’t worth carrying on.

As talented as our bball team is, most of those guys have at least an outside shot at a professional career. If I have that opportunity laid out in front of me, I’m sure as hell avoiding any confrontation with a football player who may not see himself as having nearly as much to lose. Last thing I’d want is to get tossed down the stairs, bust up my knee, break a leg, or something stupid and end my career.

Get over it and move on fellas…not that they’ll listen to me.

This is seriously ridiculous

Where are Soda Pop and Pony Boy? I can understand a fight over a girl but this escalation to where we all get “our boyz” and throw down is so juvenile.

Whomever the two guys are that have an issue with one another, have a fight, get it over with, and everybody move on. Turning it into this huge ordeal is just not smart.

And if Briscoe is somehow involved, Mangino may want to consider suspending him for multiple games. One fuckup is OK but he should be on notice. I hope he isn’t really involved other than being present, but we shall see.

Taylor's Facebook Posts, etc.

…Are probably the thing that is getting the most national attention right now. All of them are actually rap lyrics, not things he came up with by himself.

So many things about this story fascinate me:

1. There were over 100 people at the first fight- must have been NUTS.

2. Keegan’s “oh by the way, they fight all the time.” What? What else does this guy know that he isn’t telling us?

3. HCBS recruits a bit “edgier” kids than Roy ever did- as someone as EDSBS posted, “you can recruit midwestern farm boys and hope for Danny and the Miracles, or you can go get guys from Philly and win championships.” How much tradeoff is Jayhawk nation willing to tolerate?

4. In baseball, reporters always talk about how this will “actually be good for the team in the long run” because it will “bring them all together.” But they never bring up that angle in basketball or football… I wonder what the difference is there…

by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Sep 23, 2009 1:41 PM CDT reply actions

Without editorializing...

This quote…

"you can recruit midwestern farm boys and hope for Danny and the Miracles, or you can go get guys from Philly and win championships." How much tradeoff is Jayhawk nation willing to tolerate?

… sounds EXACTLY like the moral dilemma that Big 8/Big 12 North fans raised in the midst of Nebraska football’s run of championships/general thuggery in the 90s.

to get into this discussion, but there is a distinct difference (right or wrong, not passing judgment on it) in our society where this language is and is not acceptable. As a Caucasian, I find the word repulsive, but probably because I was raised to think it was repulsive (Parents, ftw!). But what is repulsive an unacceptable for/to one, isn’t necessarily so for/to another. Context, it seems, is everything.

Another thought on this (sorry for being a downer)...

What kind of effect will this sort of thing have on recruiting (basketball, I mean)? I feel like it could go one of two ways (and maybe it will be a bit of both).

First, obviously, it’s going to give fodder to schools with whom we’re directly competing for players. I think this definitely hurts us in the Harrison Barnes sweepstakes. If the reports I’ve read about this kid’s character are true, this may be enough to send him to Duke or UNC.

On the other hand, if you’ll pardon the cynicism, some of the kids HCBS recruits come from broken families and tough neighborhoods (okay, most of them, probably), and seeing how the team supports (for lack of a better term, I guess) each other against perceived adversaries, may actually benefit the recruitment of a certain type of player in some backward way. I’m not saying these are the kind of guys we want at KU, but I think the high road is basically an empty highway in College Basketball (and most other revenue-producing sports) these days, so it’ll be interesting to see how this all turns out.

I welcome your thoughts on the subject.

This is about a guy doing another guys girlfriend.
It would happen no matter who or what kind of kid is involved. Should it escalate this far? prolly not but now its a unity thing, team vs team, my boy vs your boy, im backin the guy i go to war with every game, type thing.

by bkmhoxx on Sep 23, 2009 2:26 PM CDT up reply actions

I dunno -

Do a 100 dudes get into it over one girl?

I think that’s maybe where it may have started but the disturbing thing here is the escalation. I think certainly that having guys from Newark and NE Philly there comes with them a sense of street brotherhood. That’s not necessarily a bad thing its what they know. But in situations like this it can proved dangerous.

I’d be curious to hear if T2 hears from his ‘Big Brother’ in Florida and how involved the Twins’ mother will be here.

when you instill a “family” and “team” concept into these kids, yes, 100 dudes is exactly what you get. Common sense and the “correct” way to handle it is what was lacking here. And with 18-20 yr olds, id say that is common.

I thought the same thing when I read about the first incident from last night. But this is now more like a gang war. Ongoing behavior in which they seem to be trash talking and raising the stakes. They are not just kids. They are Kansas student athletes that have the university paying their way through school. As such they represent the university good and bad. They are hurting themselves and the university. Not sure where this all started, if this is ongoing as Keegan states, I’m sure it wasn’t the girl issue from last night.

You win the captain obvious award! :)

No disrespect meant, but the race card is Whitlock’s answer to almost everything. I’d guess he’ll defend the players and lampoon Self, Mangino, and Lew Perkins. (I’m sure the woman involved will take a fair share of the blame also)

no charges

the Police already said that no charges will be filed unless someone wants to file a police report. its a non-issue with the Police.

Police Report from last night.

Yes this is stupid and a little embarrassing, but I’m still kind of ho-hum about this. If Taylor doesn’t get injured who knows if this is even a story.

yes

im with you on this Denver. Unless some newfound facts show up, i think this is just dumb kids not using their brains and not thinking about how this will affect their futures or how it puts bad light on the university and students/fans. Im just glad noone got hurt (seriously) and noone got their guns out.

from reading it, basically some guys were talking sh!t back and forth, it escalates…sounds like there were two scuffles and then the crowd scattered when the police were called. No one wants to press charges, seems under control. Police file papers and depart.

I’m pretty sure this same type of thing happens weekly between the Delta Chi’s and the SAE’s doesn’t it?

I don't know, I like to think that things started out initially with good intentions, but then we just loused it up. Kind of like intelligence. at least as far as we will know. I’m sure Basketball’s annual boot camp won’t be very pleasant and don’t be surprised if our guys come out and look a little beat up this Saturday against Southern Miss. We may not have played Texas last week, but the team might feel like it after today.

Wow, heard about the start of this on the way to work.

Not cool at all. The bad thing is it sounds like this all too common between these two groups around Lawrence.

I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.

Only Positives I See...

1. Thank God no one was seriously hurt.

2. Thank God this was over some girl, and not something far more sinister, like drugs or gambling debts.

3. Thank God this blew up now, so that the coaches and athletic department can get on top of it and quash it before it escalated to something far more serious- like guns or knives getting involved.

Yeah, I suppose so

I just feel like it’s kinda in poor taste now. I’m just preemptively sensitive about the constant ribbing we’re gonna get for the next year or two.

Of course, a sweep of NCAA football and basketball national championships would probably shut everybody up, right?

THe best Ribbing from MU fans is this:

MU fan: KU sucks
KU fan: Kiss the rings b*tch, we won the title you haven’t won anything.
MU fan: I don’t want titles if it means MU has to seep to the level of KU athletics to win them.

Mizzou people always say that, like are Florida State or something. Don’t want to confuse us with all the “saints” if the MU athletic department (do they not remember all the BS that went down there like 2-3 years ago?)

by KU Grad 08 on Sep 23, 2009 10:16 PM CDT up reply actions

It's definitely an interesting subject

RockChalk, is there any way you can suggest this issue of the tradeoff between winning and off the court/field bad behavior for the next Big 12 Roundtable?

I mean, every school in this conference has skeletons in their closet- heck, even that nice Texas Baptist school had one of the worst events in college sports history. This tussle certainly doesn’t rise to that level, or the level of Lawrence Phillips, or the Colorado rape accusations, etc.

But it definitely calls into question the relationship between modern athletes and their schools (are they really representatives of the university given how different their day-to-day experience is than that of a “regular” student?), and where do we draw the line and say, “I’m not willing to allow athletes to represent my school if they do X, no matter how good they are at their sport”?
