Still a little early for me to get to excited when looking at this but there are certainly some areas where the Jayhawks look very strong versus last season.  7th in the nation in terms of rushing yards per game has led to a 6th overall offensive rating for the Jayhawks.  Balance and the ability to control the clock are two huge advantages in football and at first glance it appears the Jayhawks may be developing that.

On the defensive side of the ball the Jayhawks front 4 has stepped up through 2 games averaging 4.5 sacks per game.  Obviously I think that takes a drop off as we play more spread teams in the Big 12 but nonetheless when you combine that with a total defensive effort that is borderline top 25 at this point, you have to be a little happy.

As far as this game goes, Duke has been inept in running the ball so Kansas can really tee off and focus on the pass which I think only helps the claim that Kansas is an improved defensive team.  Combine that with Duke's poor rushing defense and the recipe doesn't add up to anything but a win for Kansas.  Duke has two choices here, first overload on the run and try to plug that weakness in which case Todd Reesing will pick them apart.  The second is to do what everyone else has done so far and decide you are going to stop Todd Reesing, in which case the Kansas backs and offensive line could be in for a fun day.  Look for Trevor Marrongelli to be flying over some piles in this one laying some haymakers as Jake Sharp and Toben Opurum rack up the yards on our way to a route.

I'm excited for Saturday, only problem is Comcast pulling versus off of DirecTV.  That mean's I'll likely be headed to Choppers in Denver on Saturday morning for some beers and breakfast burritos and an early kickoff against Duke.  I think I'll have a good laugh as I look up at the Mark Randall poster over the door as you walk in and think of this as just another payback opportunity for that 1991 basketball team that didn't quite make it.  Anyway, if anyone's in the vicinity and thinking about going...say hey and let's grab a beer.  Rock Chalk.

Scoring Defense

The actual is 6. How?

We’ve allowed 10 points over two games. Shouldn’t it be 5?

I put the national ranking in for both you are correct it is 5…miss print…I’ve been getting sloppy due to the lack of sleep : )

You have a toddler or newborn (or both) right?

You get a pass for sure. My four year old still keeps me up some nights – they say you get used to the lack of sleep, but I never have.

One thing I noticed while watching the replay of the UTEP game last night........

Steven Foster (#31) has played both sides of the ball for two consecutive games now.

Against UNoCo he played some DE and came in on the goal line offense as a fullback.

Against UTEP he played some DE and lined up right next to Briscoe (I guess the TE spot?) in that power formation that converted the short yardage 3rd down in the 2Q.

That’s pretty cool if you ask me.

for sure...

he was a guy that I think a lot of people were excited about when he was recruited because he was a local kid that was said to have a lot of talent. Problem was he always seemed lost in the system, out of position and sitting because there wasn’t a good way to use him. It’s good to see they’ve found a place for a guy like him on both sides of the ball no less.

OL 2 deep

The KCStar has a nice article about Spikes. One of the more interesting comments is about them practicing rather evenly distributed across the 2-deep. The 2-deep for both lines was one of the more interesting things coming out of camp this year IMO, and that was even before Foster’s play at DE.

That leads me to 2 questions someone on here might be able to answer:
1. The team doesn’t release info on how many plays each member plays, but have any of you guys rewatching the games ever broken it down?
2. Has Quinton Woods played at all this year? Is it possible that they are asking him to take a redshirt and live in the weightroom/training table. With a couple sr’s performing well this year, it would certainly be nice to have him at full speed and dominant for the next 2.

Thanks for the informative site.

He could still redshirt, yes?

I seemed to recall reading a year ago (?) about the amount that an individual could play and when, but still redshirt. Is there good knowledge out there on this?

by dagger108 on Sep 17, 2009 10:25 AM CDT up reply actions

not sure he can redshirt, think he may have used that at JUCO

Ooops

The Spikes, OL, article was in the LJW. The KCStar has the article about Onyegbule with one of the greatest DL quotes/FB analysis ever:

"What it is," Sims said, "it’s one-on-one basketball. But these are the differences: The hoop moves, and both guys are allowed to foul. You’re trying to get to the quarterback and dunk. That’s pretty much it."

i like what i see in kansas this year

i believe kansas with the talent and experience they have can punch a ticket to the big 12 championship game. i don’t know if you care to know this but kansas had one of the best against the spread years in ncaa history. keep it going. i love watching todd reesing. he looks really small on the field but is very quick and can throw accurately with some zip on the ball. keep up the good work. peace out. ramble on!

Trevor Marrongelli

He’s in this week? For whom?

If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it's probably propaganda.

by labbadabba on Sep 17, 2009 8:21 AM CDT reply actions

No...

he’s not in for sure. It’s just that after rewatching that game a couple times he was an animal when he was in there. At the same time Brad Thorson and Sal Capra are so solid at the guards right now it’s hard to justify moving him into the lineup. He’ll play and when he’s in I encourage you to check him out because it’s fun watching such a big guy fly around and throw his body around like he does, but he’s not in for anybody. Just wishful thinking I guess.

Good news in all this is it appears we have 3 very solid options at the guard spots right now. From what I hear once John Williams becomes more consistent we’ll have 4.

DUKE/KANSAS ON VERSUS 9/19

I work at VERSUS and just came across your blog. I wanted to make sure you knew that DirecTV chose to remove VERSUS, one of the fastest growing cable sports network in the country, from its programming lineup and is depriving millions of fans, including you and your readers, from seeing this weekend’s match-up between Kansas and Duke.

DirecTV has been clouding the real issue and has neglected to mention that they demanded a deal that would place VERSUS on a tier, removing the channel from more than six million subscribers who were getting it at no additional cost. DirecTV would then force those subscribers to pay an additional fee to get access to VERSUS.

For more info and the real story, check this out:

http://www.versus.com/nw/article/view/82380/?tf=Generic_Article_2column.tpl

Through that link you can also find out how to contact DirecTV to get VERSUS back or how to switch video providers so you don’t have to miss the game. But here’s the number to call too: 800-642-1923

Versus is on Dish Network

And on their basic tier no less.

I think DirecTV is shooting themselves in the foot with how they’re handling this.

But still.

DirecTV > life.

I’m banking on being able to find it through other ways. If not, I’ll cry, then depend on labba to provide play-by-play again.

You’re up for it labba, right?

So far my Time Warner Cable

has been up to the task. Now if TWC can only get NFL network I’ll be thrilled.

yes this is a problem Katie...

I’m hoping something changes in time for the game otherwise I will be out looking for a bar with Dish Network which is also challenging

Internet

Friends out here in CA were telling me about an internet site that hosts “TV” from anyplace in the world. Sorry that I don’t recall the details. They were able to watch every game at home last year, which with a couple toddlers was very important to them. It is nice to be able to watch, and record, the games at home, but I also don’t mind spending a few $ at one of the local bars to watch. It beats paying a lot for annual subscriptions that are rarely necessary. Still hoping (naively) for ala carte cable.

by dagger108 on Sep 17, 2009 10:32 AM CDT up reply actions

Okay - here's a proposition.

What if one of us gets a sling box? Here’s what I’m thinking:

My brother just moved to Turkey and is unable to get any KU/KC sports. It’s pretty much killing him. I proposed that one of us in my family should get an additional satellite/cable box and hook it up to a Sling Box. That way that box can be access anywhere in the world by up to 6 people.

That same scenario could work here. We could have a couple of us who get all the games pick up a Sling box and others can tune in via the internet and maybe chip in a few $$. Maybe only one of us get the uber sports package and then 6 of his closest friends just chip in $30 a month… just a thought…

If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it's probably propaganda.

channelsurfing.net

That site saved me last Saturday for UTEP. I don’t get CBS College Sports and was prepared to head downtown to watch it at a bar with the KU watch party. Well, we had some big rains and when it rains in Austin, it floods and it flooded my route downtown. So I did the safe thing and stayed home. I was able to pick up the game live on channelsurfing.net.

Pumped to see if we can keep this great play up

The media seems to be taking notice how well we’re playing besides just the local people. Route Duke, beat Southern Miss and it will be a very successful non-con.
