Open Game Thread :: College Football :: Week 2 (September 12 2009)

So, yeah.

Here is your Open Game Thread for all games preceding Kansas-UTEP. There should be a new, Kansas-game-specific OGT that goes up at 6:30 EST/5:30 CST, so make sure you are there for that. But until then, this is your primary base of operations.

This is probably the worst week of the season, as Week Two often is. The made-for-TV matchups are significantly decreased, while conference play still hasn't picked up. Obviously, there are the big two games, which both really should be aces games, in Notre Dame @ Michigan and Southern California @ Ohio State. The morning games pretty much suck, but hey, what are you going to do? Not watch college football. I mean, come on.

I should be here most of the day, starting right around 12:00. Drop on by.

For an entire schedule of today's games on TV, go here. MattSarzSports is one of my heroes, and I have used his CFB/CBB schedules for like 2 years now. It's the best.

KU 38 UTEP 27

I’m not feeling so great about this one. UTEP has a good offense and shot themselves in the foot so much last week I think they may have run out of bullets. I think they’ll play better, and we’ll have to score a lot and avoid turnovers.

by hunter s. royal on Sep 12, 2009 11:00 AM CDT reply actions

I agree.

Beware of teams that have a reputation for being near giant killers who play like crap the week before.

by tequilaprophet on Sep 12, 2009 11:16 AM CDT up reply actions

true

Watching Toledo pummel Colorado last night brought back bad memories of the ’Hawks whizzing one away in ’06.

You're certainly right

about the early games rockchalk. They’re rotten.

Not really a fan of too much primetime college pig

Yeah, SEC has had a Saturday night game on ESPN forever, but give me more Saturday afternoon matchups.

Maybe it’s just the grumpy old man in me starting to creep in – I want my New Year’s Day lineup back, too…..not this ‘stretch it out for a week with one somewhat meaningless game’ each day. Unless it’s OU choking away another BCS bowl game. Those are too much fun not to watch.

by JayhawkTom on Sep 12, 2009 11:17 AM CDT reply actions

I like spreading it out.

That way you can watch every game, like completely.

You would like it this way.

I certainly wish USC-Ohio State

wasn’t conflicting with the Hawks. That’s the one game I want to see. Maybe we’ll be fortunate and Todd will light up UTEP so much in the first half channel-flipping will be easier.

I'm more looking forward to Michigan-Notre Dame.

I really, really want to see all 2,000 or so of the Notre Dame fans here shut up. I’m already sick of it.

by rockchalk on Sep 12, 2009 11:22 AM CDT up reply actions

With their sked

Notre Dame fans are potentially going to be as bad as ever. Puke.

by JayhawkTom on Sep 12, 2009 11:23 AM CDT up reply actions

I thought you were Catholic? :D

Agree on that. The early canonization of Weis has been pathetic.

by hunter s. royal on Sep 12, 2009 11:24 AM CDT up reply actions

Is it more ridiculous...

…then K-State already giving Snyder a 5-year extension despite a ho-hum performance against UMass?

Some people just can’t let go of the past.

by tequilaprophet on Sep 12, 2009 11:35 AM CDT up reply actions

I just hope they return to the past

and assume their status as doormats of the conference.

by JayhawkTom on Sep 12, 2009 11:37 AM CDT up reply actions

It's actually his original contract.

He’s just gone with the modern tradition of not signing it until his lawyers cherry pick it for a year. The bad part of it for K-State is that it has a perpetual roll-over clause so he will always be working on a 5 year deal. If he sucks, they’ll have to buy out 5 years of contract no matter how long(or short) his time is there.

by hunter s. royal on Sep 12, 2009 11:40 AM CDT up reply actions

I like Notre Dame...

…but I’m weird because I realize they get way too much damn coverage for how irrelevant they’ve been the past decade. Just join a God-damned conference already.

by tequilaprophet on Sep 12, 2009 11:28 AM CDT up reply actions

It pissed me off

that the Big East let them join for basketball. They benefit from the conference affiliation there but get to keep all their swag from football.

by hunter s. royal on Sep 12, 2009 11:30 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, that was some kinda bullshit

But what irritates me more is they get special status when determining the post-season. That is just damn ridiculous. Hell, if Florida, OU, Texas, USC Ohio State and other schools with storied programs don’t get that kind of seat at the table, why should Notre Dame? Ridiculous.

Like I said, I’m an unusual ND fan.

by tequilaprophet on Sep 12, 2009 11:34 AM CDT up reply actions

Mandel had a good column about the Notre Damers this week. Pretty much encapsulates the prime reasons people hate them.

by JayhawkTom on Sep 12, 2009 11:36 AM CDT up reply actions

Yes, you seem quite rational. :D

The BCS rules that enable ND to get in with a pretty mediocre season are bizarre. With the schedule they have this year, it will be hard for them not to make it.

by hunter s. royal on Sep 12, 2009 11:37 AM CDT up reply actions

I just want them to be legitimately good.

I set the same standards for KU. Yeah, it was nice when we actually were able to beat the cupcakes on our schedule when Mangino began turning us around unlike with Terry Allen, but that didn’t mean we were good. We’re not even quite there yet, though winning back-to-back bowl games (including a BCS one) have certainly brought us closer, but our lack of a conference championship and our dismal record against the South Big 3 shows we still have work to do.

ND, though, has fallen into a hole of mediocrity, it’s going to take years more to dig out of it, and yet the rabid fans of the school are proclaiming this THE YEAR. Bullshit. And the media ramp up of the ND-Michigan game? Ridiculous. Beating a team that went 3-9 last year is nearly fruitless, regardless of how good they were two or three years ago.

/rant.

by tequilaprophet on Sep 12, 2009 11:45 AM CDT up reply actions

that's exactly why I hate them

their self-perception that they are a super conference.

by JayhawkTom on Sep 12, 2009 11:31 AM CDT up reply actions

Eh

They pretty much are in football. They really don’t need a conference in football. I think it’s really cool that they are their own conference, basically.

I just wish they didn’t get a guaranteed trip to the BCS with 9 wins. Other than that, though, I’m cool with the University. It’s just the fans that I don’t like.

by rockchalk on Sep 12, 2009 11:54 AM CDT up reply actions

Once again,

I’m not shocked. Why does Notre Dame get special treatment again?

ISU kicks a FG to take the lead

then completely blunder away the lead. Failed onside kick(they were offside even if they had recovered) then a personal foul by a DB gives Iowa an easy TD drive.

Tottenham Hotspur 1 - 1 Manchester United

GREAT match. Tottenham scored 0:49 in. United equalized on a GREAT free-kick by old lad Ryan Giggs.

If you are a fan of futbol or want to be, THIS is the match to watch. There should be 2 or 3 more goals before it’s all over. It’s all attack, attack, attack.

I’ve been to like half the MLS stadiums. The product on the field gets better every year. You really should check it out. There’s just too much parity right now- they’re trying to use the NFL model, but I think they’d be better with some truly elite teams, IMO.

by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Sep 12, 2009 12:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed.

United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool are so far ahead of everyone else in the EPL and that makes it good. They are the elites. But, in futbol, you don’t have to be the better team to win a given match.

More star power wouldn’t hurt the league either.z

Oh god.

My friend and I started a bunch of fantasy teams on ESPN under the name of Rex Grossman. We keep getting people asking us “ARE YOU REALLY REX GROSSMAN?”

In case anyone cares, our team name’s are Just Let It Happen [Baby], Only Men Can Prevent [Rape], and No No Means [Yes]. If anyone’s interested, these team names work very, very well for trolling the average fantasy footballer, especially when using Rex Grossman as a name.

How the hell does a tight end who has gotten into his stance on the LoS and then stand up to look at the sideline for a coach’s audible not get called for a False Start? It just seems crazy to me. I thought once you were lined up, you were lined up.

No

I understand a guy going in motion, but he didn’t. The QB gave a couple huts, the D-line flinched a bit, then the TE stood straight up and looked at the sideline for an audible, and they snapped the ball just fine. I guess I don’t understand how he’s immune to the rules of everyone else in that situation?

Tough to explain.

But like we were talking about earlier, everyone has psuedo favorite teams. West Virginia was WAY up there for me, both basketball and football.

When the ’Eers basketball team made the run from bubble team entering the Big East tournament to Elite Eight, I watched every game. It was incredible.

And when the ’Eers football team beat Georgia in the Sugar Bowl, I was absolutely sold. Casual rooting for them became near-fandom.

I love them both to death. Both for their innovation and their just general aces-like qualities.

That Georgia game

made me a huge fan of Steve Slaton. I’m still a huge fan to this day. I do agree with KC that Rodriguez was much, much more likable at WVU than he has been at Michigan.

the Hill is top notch

the stadium has vastly improved through the three phases of enhancements. Plus, better football always helps.

by JayhawkTom on Sep 12, 2009 3:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Eh

It’s pretty basic I’d say. Not as nice as CU’s, but it has a really nice setting in the middle of a park. There’s a big hill that’s a tailgating hotspot. They added a kind of silly looking elite seats at the end of the horseshoe.

It’s definitely gotten better, but it’s not exactly an architectural marvel or anything.

by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Sep 12, 2009 3:21 PM CDT up reply actions

no, it's not the Guggenhiem, or the Rose Bowl

but the Hill on a game day, in the fall, with the colors around Potter’s Lake, is a sweet sight.

And the Touchdown Club seats are silly looking. Just half-assed attempts at culling more dollars from the big donors. If/when the boxes go up on the east side, that will eliminate the TD Club. Of course, something else will replace it.

by JayhawkTom on Sep 12, 2009 3:24 PM CDT up reply actions

I wouldn't mind

If they just put in like collapseable bleachers there for big games. Let students go nuts there. Just DON’T block off the hill- graduation is too special and important a tradition, even for helping out the football program.

I'd be real surprised if the Hill ever got blocked

too many other options, like lowering the field (which has been explored) and removing the track with the new track only facility in, more seats above the bowl, boxes on the east, etc.

Don't Let ND fans hear that.

They tried to join the Big 10 back in like the 30s, and were rejected. Michigan basically kept them out themselves. Something to do with anti-catholic or anti-Irish sentiment at the time.

Pretty silly to hold onto a grudge about that after all these years, especially when they’ve got this sweet setup now. But it helps make the rivalry more intense, I guess. The Civil War is still a better reason to hate a team, IMO.
