Kansas Football Depth Chart Is Out
One week out and we've got an official word from the athletic department on what things will look like when we take the field on Saturday the 5th. For the better part of three weeks we've been trying to piece together what this thing might look like from the eyes in the sky, but it's always fun to see the official look from the staff.
Let the speculation end because this is the Jayhawks story and for now their sticking to it. We'll see come next Saturday.

Overall...
I’m happy with it…only one freshman or RS freshman starter which is a sign that our recent recruiting years have been successful as has our player development.
On the offensive line it’s nice to see Wolfe, Williams, Marrongelli and Parish on the 2 deep, this is an area where we could have some serious depth in the years to come.
McDougald backing up Meier but it still sounds like in 4 wide sets he’ll be on the field. A little disappointed in not seeing Stewards name but I’m still holding out hope for him to break into some solid minutes this year.
Backup quarterback…Kale Pick!!!
Thornton back at FS is a good thing.
Max and Laptad win the end battle with some solid depth on the defensive line as a whole.
Dudley wins out in the middle, w/Springer and Wright currently listed as the other starters. Again though I think this position is still wide open.
Very happy to see Greg Brown and Lubbock Smith in the secondary on the 2-Deep.
Still think we’ll see more 4-2-5 as the season goes on, maybe not at the start though.
Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.
I bet we use a lot of the 4-2-5
against UTEP. They run a spread, as do Southern Miss. Now that I think about it, Duke might even.
Anyways, the Miners and Golden Eagles, in the least, should provide a legitimate spread offense for our D to work out some kinks.
No real surprises. For me, probably the biggest is that Thornton is for sure ahead of Strozier, although I’d imagine both will see some playing time.
yeah it seems like Mangino
has been smartly scheduling non-con opponents who run the spread…might as well get used to it now

Actually I'm pretty sure Puke runs a proset offense
That is why Greg Paulus had to go to Syracuse to play QB this year (I think he was named the starter too, no? Interesting to see how that plays out), Paulus was a spread QB in high school and Duke uses a proset based offense. Someone correct me if I’m wrong but that was my understanding of the sitch.

Duke is more pro set, but they like to air it out
Paulus went to Syracuse because Cutcliffe didn’t want him as a QB. Offered him a chance to “tryout” as a WR though. You know your prospects are bad when Duke football turns you away.
USM is the team we have to watch out for the most before OU. Very balanced offense. Might be forced into more of the 4-3 against them.
Really good program too
Produced quite a few NFL players in the last decade.

Larry Fedora is the difference
He did pretty well in his first year, bringing in a great recruiting class (by CUSA standards) and making it to a bowl. Now they have what could be the best RB/WR combo in the country after Okie State. Their defense may be weak, but they know how to put up points.
UTEP is a concern because we seem to struggle on the road, but when you compare coaching ability and talent, USM will be the greatest challenge. We may even need Thornton to slide back over to corner for that game (DeAndre Brown is enormous).
craaaap
you just scared the hell out of me for Southern Miss.

No worries.
We’ll win. We have Todd, Dez, Kerry and Jake. If it takes 50+ points to win, sobeit.
So I guess this means that...
“officially” our base defense is a 4-3 with Springer in the starting lineup? Interesting. While I expect to see a lot of 4-2-5 without Springer on the field, it is encouraging to see Springer on the first team.
Maybe I shouldn't be but
Is anyone else surprised that Woods didn’t win the LE job. I thought he was the favorite for that spot. Did I hear wrong?
I think he’s a guy that can make an impact right away in terms of a pass rusher, but he’s not quite a complete player yet so we’ll see him more in certain situations to start. Honestly, it’s not a bad thing that Max O has the spot won, they’ve been talking about his potential for 4 years now and it seemed like he started getting it late last year. He’s impressive from a physical standpoint so if he puts the mental aspect with it, he could be pretty good.

That's my take, as well.
More of a situational pass rusher type, which has its uses, but probably isn’t starter material for teams as good as we hope to be.
If that makes any sense.
Plus this is a 4-3 base
Which would be played when we expect more running, balance, etc. In out 4-2-5 when we are expecting a spread and pass heavy attack, I would expect to see more Woods for his pass-rushing powers.

Random Thoughts
No big surprises on the offensive side other than perhaps seeing Isiah Barfield on the 2-deep. I’m hoping Rod Harris can work his way up to 2nd team. Good to see Ingram crack the 2-deep at WR. Kind of glad not to see Omigie or McGriff on the 2-deep. Would like to see those guys redshirt if possible.
On defense, I was not expecting to see Jamal Greene on the 2-deep. Based on the amount of reps Travis Stephens got the other day I would have expected to see him listed before Greene.
No Quigley on the 2-deep at LB which is no surprise based on what we saw Wednesday. The 2-deep in the secondary looks exactly like how they played it the other day. Obviously, the official defense doesn’t show the nickelback but I’m assuming that will be Chris Harris.
Overall, I like it. There are a lot of 2nd team players that will see plenty of action this year.
your point regarding Greene/Stephens along with what I know of his injury makes me wonder if this 2 deep is necessarily the most accurate or just what the coaches want out there. There are a few things that caught my eye and didn’t seem to mesh with what we’re seeing in practice.

A few names will move around
Each week until conference play. Heck, maybe even later. The defensive chart could change every single week. Look at how many times it changed last year in the secondary.
Blakesley was going to be a starter all along, even though he wasn’t listed as a 1st teamer in the previous depth charts. Springer had the most experience after Wright at LB, so I didn’t see him sitting behind raw underclassmen. For the first time in many years, nothing on the depth chart surprises me.
I'm probably most intrigued by our seconday at this point
It has a chance to be very good depending on how our young corners do.
We all know Daymond Patterson has the potential to be a great player out there as a sophomore. Will his height be an issue?
Anthony Davis is another sophomore opposite him who I’ve never seen play. He must have some talent to beat out older guys back there. At 6’’0 he’ll most likely be covering the tall receivers we go up against.
2 sophomore CB’s would normally scare the hell out of me but backing them up are to Senior Safeties with a lot of experience. Darrell Stuckey leading the whole defense and then now Justin Thornton returns to the other safety spot. With those 2 anchoring the secondary, I’m very confident that teams won’t be able to beat us very much deep and hopefully we’ll be able to really get up and play people.

Davis played
Against NU quite a bit last year if you can stomach re-watching Ganz rip us apart. It wasn’t a great game for the freshman (though it wasn’t for any of our corners). Personally I wanted to see Davis get a shot at nickel because he was an interception-machine in high school. I thought giving him some space out the middle in zone coverage would maximize his strengths. He never really struck me as the lock-down type, but the coaches must see something.
Any other games after that or just that one?

Remember seeing him vs KSU and in the Insight Bowl. Made a few nice plays.
We used a bunch of corners last year, so it was hard to keep up.
SQ = Squad
Means they haven’t lettered, but were with the team for at least a year.
Squad
I was also going to ask what SQ stood for. I always thought it meant something like Special Qualifier or something. Now I know.
I think the depth chart will change as time goes by this year. In my opinion Woods needs to gain some weight before he can be an every down player.
