DEZMON BRISCOE
jayhawks fans tell me what you think about this player? am working on my 2010 mock draft. 7 rounds! lol.....i have him as a 4th rounder why? well yes he has been very productive but he does not play in a pro-style offense and he runs a slow 40 and those 2 things are gonna hurt him in the draft this year. do you think thats a fair round for him because of all of his negatives and positives?

I’m guessing the 40 time you are going off of is his 4.7 from high school which is probably not accurate anymore. Speed can be developed and I’ve got to believe that Briscoe is going to turn out better at the combine than what he did 3.5 years ago.
4th round is too low in my opinion, not sure I know where and that depends on how well he does this year but I think he’ll be higher than that. I could be wrong and I may be biased, but the guy his made some pretty good defenses look silly trying to cover and tackle him.
Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.
nope i cant post url's here but there is a site that said his 40 was slow and not his high school....but his college 40

I've...
seen anywhere from a 4.5 to a 4.62 in college and that’s not too bad for a 6’3" 200 pounder. No he’s not a burner but I guess you just have to ask yourself what you want in a receiver. A guy that can make a catch in traffic, run after the catch and make plays or are you simply looking for a guy that you can throw the ball deep to.
If your answer is the first, I’d call you a team that wants to win, if your answer was the second…I might start to wonder if you are Al Davis.
Like I said he might not be a 1st rounder but I don’t think he drops to the 4th unless he struggles this year. I’ll guess late 2nd rounder as his high and late 3rd as his low. That assumes a good year.

mostly joking on the Al Davis comment but living in Denver I’m all to familiar with that man’s affinity for the deep threat. Unfortunately for him it doesn’t translate to a whole lot of winning seasons lately.

still looking for 40 times and...
continue to see a low of 4.5 with most saying 4.6.
Interestingly comparable receivers sizewise in Dez Bryant and Brandon Lafell both were listed with 4.55’s so not a huge difference.

I agree with everything Denver said
And I think some will have to do with how KU does a bit as well. If Briscoe has another Monster year and KU does well and has some national attention I would think that helps a bit. I think Talib’s status helped with KU in the Orange Bowl, his pick six with the nation watching, etc. I know draft people and scouts say little things like that don’t matter, but I gotta think stuff like that has to make some difference, however small it is. Maybe that explains why a lot of small-school draft gems can be found later. Who knows.
As far as speed, Briscoe makes up for a lack of breakaway speed IMO with run after the catch ability, shiftyness, and route running. If he really brings it this year and goes all out every game, and the things I mentioned above, I would see him maybe going mid to later second round. But I’m no Mel Kiper. Or Todd McShay :)
His YAC
numbers are always high despite his 40 time.

Spectacular catches
He has the ability to go up and get the ball, and layout and get the ball. He catches it with his hands, and with his long reach and height he can snag balls from a decent area around his body. He’s fast in pads – 40 times are nice but no one plays football just in shorts and a jersey.

That's right.
Think a young unarmed Plaxico Burress.

against National runner up Oklahoma last season:
12 catches 269 yards and 2 TDs…I don’t care what offense you play in, that is impressive

Briscoe reminds me of....
…a guy at K-State named Darnell McDonald circa the Michael Bishop years. Dude checked in at 6’3", 205, pretty good set of hands on him, somehow managed to corral a K-Swiss endorsement despite his lofty 7th-round selection status. Point isn’t that Briscoe >= McDonald or Briscoe is <= McDonald, I just think that projecting WRs is an extremely iffy science.
Receivers are pretty fungible assets. Denverjhawk cut a wide swath with his high 2nd/low 3rd scope, but maybe that’s how wide the band has to be to project WR draft slotting. If you miss too high drafting WRs, it really stings (see Warrick, Peter or Rogers, Charles for reference). Even 3rd rounders have short life cycles. Snoop Minnis, please pick up the nearest white courtesy phone….
If I were matching Dezmon with a current NFL WR, I’d liken him to a younger Muhsin Muhammad or maybe Bobby Engram. Solid, steady, reliable.
I like the Mushin comparison
and a Snoop Minnis reference, wow, haven’t heard that name for a few years.

I've heard he's definitely got a shot at the first round.
I bet he goes in the second, but really, at this point, who the hell knows. A couple of years ago, the January before the Draft (like, just 4 months away from Draft Day) Andre Woodson was essentially a unanimous first rounder. On actual Draft Day, he went in the 7th round and was cut in training camp (IIRC — I might be wrong on that last part).
Anyways…the point is that lots of stuff can change. So, yeah. Duh. But, if I had to guess, like I said, I’ll guess the second round. The speed will drop him down from “elite” status, although neither Fitzgerald or Crabtree had great 40 times (of course, they were better prospects than Briscoe, so I’m not comparing, just saying that speed isn’t a necessity). He’ll be a great value pick, whenever he’s picked.
