I'm impressed
I have to say I am amazed. The Kansas Jayhawks, number 1 preseason basketball team, potenial candidate for the national championship, the list goes on... and yet, day after day football seems to be the thing.
Now i know football season starts long before basketball season (unfortunetly) but I stand amazed that basketball seems to not be discussed that much. Granted this is just what i've observed since I've joined and it waswn't that long ago, but I was hoping for some basketball conversation!
Some friendly bickering, stat swapping, Kentucky's 8th nat'l banner, anything....
I guess because I'm from Kentucky and I live for basketball is why I don't get it, but with your basketball team entering the season like it is, I'm astounded there isn't more basketball ball talk.
So let's hear it!
P.S. I've added an unbiased poll for you jayhawk fans

Hmm...
I’ll pass on the poll. Sorry.
The sad fact is that, even though there are multiple newspapers’ sports departments dedicated to KU Basketball news, there’s just not much going on basketball-wise right now. With KU’s recent football success (at least compared to the previous 40 or so years), there’s a ground swell of interest as we get closer to football season, as you noted above.
Also, we haven’t gone through nearly the chaotic situation that Kentucky has this off-season. It’ll pick up, though, don’t worry.
chaotic?
Perhaps you’re referring to the firing of a crappy coach, hiring of a another, signing recruits like crazy, being accused of cheating everytime we so much as go on a jog in the same city as a recruit, hyping of the fans, an ongoing lawsuit between the university and the former coach, Calipari’s hot daughter, beign accused of cheating by numerous media outlets and other fanbases, the fans finally being excited to be talked about again, Louisville losing top recruits to Europe or otherwise, Pat Forde ripping on us, having to learn about this new offense, finally haveing a coach who can handle the media, reports of minor recruiting violations, the U-19 Olympics, players going all over america to train, the players and coaches twittering their every move, and Calipari’s hot daughter?
That’s just a day in the life! haha

Far be it for me...
…to stand up for KU, but maybe Kentucky should become a little more well-rounded so that life doesn’t begin in November and end in March.

Well we enjoy being good at multiple sports
I love basketball, I love football, I love baseball. And when your school is good in college football it’s hard not to get real excited for it. College football season is one of the best times of year and KU is relevant in that, sorry that UK isn’t at all.
Get used to it, because while we will be getting into basketball once the season starts, this board will be dominated by football until January when football is over, and basketball gets into conference season.
I understand that you may have to start getting pumped a few months early because your team hasn’t exactly been a March main-stay in recent years, but we tend to not get too high or low till March, the elite teams never do.
Good luck, and I’m glad you finally have someone to talk to again, we’ve been around the whole time….and we’ll continue to be around after you all run another coach out….orrr he gets himself and your school in trouble for NCAA violations.

I can live with Roy. It was BS the way it was handled and I put that more on Bohl than anyone. I’ve learned to live with my luke-warm feelings for Coach Roy while still feeding my burning hatred of UNC.

One more thing
Not that I care too much about your state of mind, but I would be cautious to have such high expectations for such a young team. I know you’ve been away from college basketball for a few years now but underclassman dominated teams can be fabulous to watch but there are growing pains. If you’re serious that you expect a National title in July, well then I hope you handle disappointment well because it’s no easy road. Since we’re pretty recent in getting one, take it from me.

One can read some of the UNC boards
and see the same thing. There’s a lot of talk about the ‘Heels football program coming into this year. There’s a good shot at them winning the ACC and they know it. So that’s the topic dominating their boards at the moment.
I suppose if I had to gauge it, I’m a bigger football fan than a basketball fan. I was in Atlanta when KU was in the Final Four. It was fun and memorable but not nearly as special as the Orange Bowl. I was at the Orange Bowl with my older brother (sick as a dog btw) and all we could do was look at eachother and shake our heads and say ‘I can’t believe this is happening.’ It was surreal and so much more intense a feeling than even winning the National Championship in BBall 2 years ago.
Now, that’s just this fan’s impression. But I have a feeling, if KU managed to win it all in Football this year, there would be no Massachusetts street left. The ’88 post championship riots would be tame in comparison. It would be such chaos that Quantrill and his raiders themselves would be run off after seeing such a sight.
Come December, once we’ve clinched our bowl berth, we’ll start breaking down the BBall team in earnest. We’ll probably talk about how impatient Collins is with the ball and comparing X’s first month to Brandon Rush’s and wondering if Travis Releford will end up seeing the floor. I think we’ll be happy with Robinson and his early contributions. But the basketball program and the KU basketball fans know that this is football time. And for the first time in decades that means something around here. And we wouldn’t have it any other way.
I've got crazy flipper fingers!

You won't catch me dead
on a UNC messageboard.
I respect the hell out of Kansas (and michigan state if that’s relevant) but when it comes to Louisville and UNC, I’d rather—well i can’t think of what i’d rather do but it’d be bad—than give their sites some numbers boosts :)
I would throw Puke in there but, as many of you have so kindly pointed out, UK has been irrelevent the past few years and we haven’t played Puke in that time
Truthfully,
I can’t stand UNC either. Most North Carolinians I find to be pretty awful fans to deal with. I happen to have some Tarheels in the family so I get a to hear all the scuttle, so as a result I begrudgenly follow the ’Heels to keep up in the conversation. (I have to be able to disucss UNC with them on equal footing so I can then explain to them how KU is better)
Don’t mind Esty, he’s usually not that excitable…you must have hit a nerve. : )
I've got crazy flipper fingers!
well that is where we can agree
hating UNC…..Hey I used to hate Kentucky back in the 90’s but that is probably a compliment to how good you guys were. I usually hate the teams that are good year after year when KU isn’t getting the job done. That has worn off in recent years, but I’ve got a pretty good feeling that when Cal is there it will rise up again, after all I don’t think I disliked a team more than Memphis in the last 3 years (other than UNC of course).

Thanks for building up our numbers UKBlue.
We’re in a very fortunate time at KU with both the B-Ball & football programs at peak periods. As KCSince88 will no doubt chime in with we’re still predominantly a basketball school(IMVHO) but Mangino has built a solid program and we’re fortunate to have perhaps the most influential football player ever at KU in Todd Reesing. (And I certainly am old enough to realize the influence Gale Sayers, John Hadl, Riggo, and Nolan Cromwell had.)
We get to have our cake and eat it too, with a highly anticipated chance to take the Big 12 North title, then move on to Bill Self’s run at his second national title. We’ll still go insane when something like the X saga fires up, but there’s not much b-ball news now and we’re happy to let the fighting Manginos get their well-deserved pub.
I think Cal and UK were made for each other(take that as you wish) and I hope we get a chance to meet in the final 4.

I was there too Labbadabba
And had that same feeling. When BMac got that last first down and sealed it, I was in shock. I was also in shock when I learned VTech fans actually do the hokie pokie at half time…wow. And I was in shock with how cold and rainy Miami was, and how I didn’t bring warm clothes, and how despite getting in early, Hoodies were NOT being sold at any stands in the stadium.
As for KU foosball, I’ve always followed and cheered hard for the Hawks since I came to KU, but that was mostly because I was a huge college football fan (parents went to Wisconsin, grew up with Rose Bowl victories and the like). and I’m willing to bet most people on this board followed us hard back in the early Mangino days too. From what I gathered as a student, more casual fans and girls have been filling the stadium more since we’ve broken out, plus the media loves the underdogs on our team (Reesing, etc).
Kentucky doesn’t have it easy in the SEC, and granted we have feasted on the Big12 North recently, and enjoyed wins over South teams in down years (pokes and aggies). However, Kentucky could do what KU did, grab under-the-radar talent eager to prove themselves on a big stage and show the big schools they missed out. Our recruiting and general chip on our shoulder a lot of players had really paid off early on, and our success started from that attitude (IMHO).
Yes, it WAS chilly
I saw my folks who live in Ft. Lauderdale over Christmas and I decided to stay a few extra days for the OB. I sat in the Alumni section in the upper deck behind KU’s endzone. I had some VT jackass sitting next to me. He had some connection to KU that I can’t remember but mostly he was cheering for VT. He kept trying to explain Beamer Ball to me. Shortly after explaining the ins and outs of VT defensive and special teams prowess we saw Talib high-stepping his way towards us.
The coldest part was the pregame festivities on Miami Beach the day before. The wind came right off Biscayne Bay and it cut. One of the best parts of the show other than Big Jay challenge Hokie to a dance-off and smoking that turkey was they had players who played in the ‘69 Orange Bowl. One of whom played in the ’48 Orange Bowl and was a coach on the ’69 Orange Bowl team. That 82 year old man got up on stage in front of everyone, Jayhawk and Hokie alike and talked about how we were inches from winning in ’48 and lost on a technicallity in ’69 but was pretty sure that we were going to “kick the shit out of them” the next day. I don’t think I’ve laughed and cheered so hard in my life. It was a great moment even though we were all freezing while drinking our promotional Coke Zero’s.
I've got crazy flipper fingers!
I just wanted to see
more interconnectivity between some of the perinnial powers. and not UNC or puke.
And I doubt UK will ever have a football team that will turn heads because well..if you’re a player and you want to go into the SEC, Bama…florida…USC…LSU…list goes on lol.
Not detracting from the Big 12, because I firmly believe that the big 12 is the only other real football conference..so in truth, all we have is basketball to look to. Baseball and track is alright, but those dont deliver the same thrill as basketball or football…and seeings how we get creamed come football season, what do we have but bball??
Every couple of years it
seem that Kentucky puts a team on the field. It happens. We’ll see with KU too after this year. If we can win without Reesing in the coming years then I’ll officially label KU football as being ‘turned around.’ Until then, I’ll just enjoy the ride and pray for it not to end.
I've got crazy flipper fingers!
Yeah I was surrounded by Tech people
Was on about the 30 yard line, pretty close actually. My dad scored the tickets with some old guy in Florida he knew, so that worked out (he and my mom were also in Florida for Wisconsin’s bowl so he was able to grab them for me). I think we were in the Tech section technically. It was funny because the guy ahead of us was a senior when KU won the Hoops title in 1988, and I was like “man I wish that would happen my Senior year” AND IT DID. BOO YA.
It took my girlfriend and I like two hours to get a cab afterwards haha. We had one, but let an elderly group have it. Then couldn’t flag another one for forever…ouch

All I want is for the players to smile and enjoy the game again. We haven’t seen that for a while. National championship be damned.

by BleedinUKBlue on Jul 25, 2009 12:53 AM CDT up reply actions
Your fanbase (maybe, MAYBE not you) will NOT
be happy if the players are just smiling and enjoying the game again and not winning.
Honestly, this is how I look at it:
Kentucky fans are whiny crybabies.
They lose: we have to hear them complain about how bad they got it and how bad (insert flavor of the month coach name here) is and how he HAS TO GO, because “WE ARE KENTUCKY AND THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE, because we have the most wins of all-time” (even though 75% of them came before the people up in arms were even born, so get off that high horse), and that shit is just annoying.
They win: we have to hear about how incredibly great Kentucky is and no one else is even close. This is comparable to Misery fans thinking they have room to talk shit because they beat us by 2 points on a lucky bounce, last second shot AT HOME, then got run by 25 at the Fieldhouse, or because they went to the Elite Eight and we only made it to the Sweet 16 one year after winning THE NATIONAL TITLE and losing that entire team pretty much, and after they hadn’t even sniffed the tourney for 6 or 7 years or whatever it was. But, I digress – we’re not talking about the, – thank God. And, I just don’t wanna hear Kentucky fans say how great they are all the time.
They are either too high or too low. Unreal expectations, which when not met, the world is coming to an end. So, really, if Kentucky could just be removed from this country, I believe that it would be a happier place.
Try this out – still gives us the recruiting advantage for football of having a beach close by and bringing in new HS’s with top players in the area, and also removes Kentucky.

Funny thing is
I’ve met much of the same with Kansas fans. When I go on a hunting trip to Kansas, yes Kansas, and it is leanred I’m from Kentucky and a UK fan, the heckling starts, so don’t assume UK fans are..how did you say it… “whiny crybabys?” I can tell you right now alot of people can get very annoying. I bothers me a little, but not to the stretch you went in your generalization.
I’m also smart enough to realize that the heckling of a few does not represent Kansas as a whole by any stretch. The same needs to be applied to your reasoning.
Pat Forde wrote an article a short while back called “Its see no evil, hear no evil in Kentucky”. Give me a break. When we are constantly protrayed as "we’re above the rules, win at all costs and win win win, I don’t blame you for your opinion.
However, I live here. I’m around UK 24/7. I know for a fact that, ESPECIALLY on campus, people are finally excited for basketball season to start. No, not excited for a national championship, but exited to see the running and gunning of the old days, how UK bball USED to be.
Win or lose, if the game is competeitive and we are playing a fastb tempo, which is what fans want to see, then we dont nesscarily need a nat’l championship (it would be nice :)). I doubt we will get that far, but I implore you understand that UK doesn’t want eternal glory or whatever is going through your mind…what we want is a team we can be proud of again, with a coach that enjoys being the coach here. That is something that you have, that UNC has, even more obscure programs have.
