Baseball Recruits?
I posted this at the end of an old thread, so I'll pose the question again. I guess this is mainly for James, but anyone is encouraged to answer. Who are the baseball recruits we should be tracking. Two years ago I remember reading a lot of good stuff about Tony Thompson, and that turned out well. Last year I remember the big deal was following our 2 guys who were drafted out of HS. One of them became a weekend starter and the other became our starting 1B. This is the type of talent we need to compete in our league. With the MLB Amateur draft coming up soon, which guys should we be following? Who's committed? Does our incoming talent give us enough to compete? We've seen from our team and teams around the nation that freshman can have a big impact, so who is it going to be for us?

Tanner Poppe
Big time recruit!
My Jayhawks draft preview story should be up today!
Heard an interesting rumor today out of a few SEK people,
apparently Poppe is getting quite a bit of interest (not that surprising).
If what I heard is correct, I’ll be surprised if he is a Jayhawk next year.
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.
JQ currently has my draft preview
hopefully he can get it posted tonight or in the morning.
and the biggest recruit is Tanner Poppe. He is a pitcher, he is a huge kid and he throws some serious gas. He was offered a football scholarship to Oklahoma but chose baseball at KU instead. His mom is a KU grad and Tanner is a valedictorian. i would be very surprised if he doesnt go to college.
not sure he was offered a football scholarship to Oklahoma. He was only rated a 2 star and listed offers from only KU and KSU prior to deciding on baseball instead. Where did you hear the OU football deal??
Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.
I will be surprised if he ends up in Lawrence.
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.
parents
unless you are getting your info from his parents or him, i feel pretty confident in my source.
but i guess a lot of money and an 18 year old brain are rarely a sure thing
:)
Hearing round 9/10
Family is pretty excited today.
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.
well
rounds 9/10 will be tomorrow
so they will have to wait a bit.
but i would bet he goes before round 9
Yes, correction.
Your projection is what I heard, expecting word around 9-10 tonight.
Guess we’ll find out.
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.
i dont think
he was drafted tonight because he is a tough sign.
2 star
yes he is a 2 star
i guess
maybe he wasnt offered a scholarship
but he was actively being recruited by Oklahoma.
i used the wrong language on that one.
fair enough...
it’s possible his rating could have gone up too had the season gone on but if I’m not mistaken he kind of gave up on football, deciding instead for baseball very early in his senior year which probably led to rivals not really evaluating him any further.

Hi Sweed,
I’m sorry about taking so long to get to this note. I’ve been on the busy side lately.
In this Q&A with Coach Price he gives some information about incoming players. I expect you already saw this but I’ll copy his reply below for other readers:
Tanner Poppe, RHP from Girad, Kansas 6’5" 250 is a big time prospect. 90-94 and is valadictorian of his class. Turned down Arizona, Arkansas, Nebraska, and Wichita Sate.
Shawn Blackwell, 6’5 ’190 RHP Clear Creek, Texas 88-92 with tremendous upside. Rated in Top 100 high school players in America
Alex De Leon, C/3B from El Camino High School, Woodlands California 6’2" 215 Physical Righthanded hitter with pop. Has plus arm and ability to play multiple positions. Highly recruited out of Southern California, bat will play and contribute as freshman
Brandon Macias, SS South Mountain College, Phoenix, Arizona Rated by many as one of the top defensive infielders in the country. Plays in a wood bat conference and hit 350 with 7 homeruns as a freshman. Was at Arizona State on scholarhship in the fall of his freshman year.
Blackwell was drafted yesterday so we will just have to sweat out if he is coming or not until August. I expect Poppe will be drafted as well but, from what I gather, he is inclined to come to KU. We’ll see. There are too many variables involved in situations like this for me to make a strong prediction.
I will be sending another Q&A to Price soon and will ask for more information regarding how the 2010 roster is shaping up. Until we know if Narodowski and Hall are coming back it will be hard to firm up a roster needs list.
Also, keep in mind Andy Marks, Wally Marciel, Jordan Jakubov, Jake Marasco and Thomas Taylor. These guys missed part or all of 2009 due to injury and all of them are potentially great NCAA players. Andy Marks was the team ace coming into 2008 before his first surgery. If he comes back he could be huge. Wally Marciel was on the Freshman Ping All-American team back in 2007. Apparently Wally’s recovery went fine and we can count on him for next year. Jakubov and Taylor have never pitched for KU but both came in very highly regarded. Marasco lost half his freshman year but he was also a very highly recruited postion player and Price thinks he will be a power source in the line-up over the next couple years. I also look for a couple of players from this year’s team to step up quite a bit next year. Jimmy Waters had an off-year but he was recovering from two sholder surgeries so was never 100%. I expect a lot from Zac Elgie next year when he becomes an everyday player.
No one likes to think about these things, but we have to expect that some players who still have eligibility remaining might not be back next year due to academics, injuries, personal decisions, etc. Each year a few players leave unexpectedly. We probably will have to wait until September before we have a good idea of what next year’s roster will look like.
