Kansas Releases 2010 Football Schedule
It's never to early to start looking ahead to the post Reesing era and I have to say it would appear as if our non-conference schedule is once again being stepped up a notch. I'd be interested in everyone's thoughts on the Georgia Tech matchup specifically, good idea or bad...
LAWRENCE, Kan. - Kansas football will host three non-conference games, including a matchup with Georgia Tech, as part of the 2010 Jayhawk Football schedule announced on Wednesday.
Kansas and Georgia Tech have agreed to a two-year series, opening in Lawrence, Kan. in 2010 and moving to Atlanta, Ga. in 2011.
The Jayhawks will open the 2010 season hosting North Dakota State on Sept. 4. KU will face Georgia Tech on Kivisto Field at Memorial Stadium on Sept. 11 before traveling to Hattiesburg, Miss. to play Southern Mississippi on Sept. 18. The Jayhawks will close out the non-conference season hosting New Mexico State on Sept. 25 before opening league play at Baylor on Oct. 2.
KU's Big 12 home games include Kansas State (Oct. 16), Texas A&M (Oct. 23), Colorado (Nov. 6), and Oklahoma State (Nov. 20). In addition to traveling to Baylor, KU will play at Iowa State (Oct. 30), at Nebraska (Nov. 13) and vs. Missouri at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City (Nov. 27).
More schedule breakdown after the jump....
KU will meet North Dakota State for the first time on the football field. NDSU was 6-5 as a member of the Missouri Valley Conference in 2008. The Bison played one game against a Football Bowl Series opponent last year, narrowly losing at Wyoming 16-13.
NDSU was 1-3 vs. ranked Football Championship Series schools in 2008.
Kansas and Georgia Tech have met just once. The Yellow Jackets edged KU 20-14 in the 1948 Orange Bowl, KU's first-ever bowl appearance.
Kansas most recently played an Atlantic Coast opponent in the 2008 Orange Bowl, when the Jayhawks defeated Virginia Tech 24-21. KU is slated to play ACC opponent Duke in Lawrence this fall.
Georgia Tech posted a 9-4 overall record last season, which included a 5-3 ACC record and a loss to LSU in the Chick-fil-A-Bowl. Kansas will make a trip to Georgia Tech on Sept. 17, 2011.
KU and Southern Mississippi will play in Lawrence in 2009 before meeting in Hattiesburg in 2010. The 2009 matchup, which will be televised nationally on FSN on Sept. 26 at 11 a.m. Central Time, will be the first between the two schools.
KU will close the non-conference portion of the 2010 campaign hosting New Mexico State. The Jayhawks and Aggies - from the Western Athletic Conference - have each won one game in the series.
NMSU posted a 42-29 win in 1988 before Kansas registered a 54-14 victory in 1991. Both previous games were played in Lawrence. KU has not played a WAC team since beating Louisiana Tech 34-14 in 2005.
The Big 12 rotation changes in 2010 as Kansas will face South Division opponents Baylor, Texas A&M and Oklahoma State for the first time since 2007. That year the Jayhawks swept that trio en route to a 12-1 overall record and 7-1 mark in Big 12 play.

Love this
Great to see us pick up a home and home series with another program that is good but not a power. I also love the fact that we are playing another game in the southeast as we are pulling recruits out of Florida every year. This gives us more exposure down there and better chances at players that the Florida schools let go through the cracks.

couldn't agree more
I think this type of non-conference schedule is ideal
I would tend to agree as well...
I think if we want to continuing in taking this thing to the next level we can’t shy away from competition and schedule 4 cupcakes every year. I completely agree with that strategy when you are building but after you’ve made your play for recognition as we have, you have to up the stakes if you want to continue being taken seriously.
I completely agree with the recruiting angle and I also think that not only does it get us exposure down there, I think we will again have a very good shot at 3 of 4 non conference games being televised which is HUGE…not long ago we were lucky to see our teams play 3 times a year on TV and it was almost unthinkable in the non conference slate.
Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.
could pose a tricky matchup though w/GTech and Paul Johnson, glad we’ve got them at home in 2010 and it would be a nice win from a confidence standpoint if we can secure that one in Lawrence…I just hate the thought of losing in the non-con.

Pat Forde had a column the other day...
…about how it’s become increasingly rare for prominent schools to set prominent match-ups in their non-con schedule. I’ll agree we’ve played some softies in the past, but we weren’t anywhere near a powerhouse at that time. Now that we’re becoming a much more regular power, it’s good to know we’re stepping up our own competition a notch.

I read that...
and as long as we win more of these than we lose I’m a big fan. Truthfully I’m a fan either way because last years game against USF was a blast to have been a part of…just imagine how what a win over South Florida on the road last year would have done for the perception of the season last year. 8-4 regular season with a road win against a BCS conference school and then throw in a higher caliber bowl win…it can be a big difference.

Quiz Time
USA Today posted a little blurb on KU’s schedule for 2010. Not much info there but see if you can spot the glaring error made by the AP writer.
is it the claim that...
the schedule he lists is for the “upcoming” season

While you are correct...
that using the word “upcoming” in regards to the 2010 season is wrong, I was going for something else. I’ll give you another chance to see if you can spot what it is I’m referring to.
ah yes...
I neglected to read further but according to this article the post-Reesing era will not actually begin in 2010 but 2011…maybe he knows something about a medical redshirt or something that we don’t :D

Too funny...
Today on USA Today’s website they posted a correction to the AP Report about KU’s 2010 schedule. Here’s the full text of the correction.
In a June 10 story about the 2010 Kansas football schedule, The Associated Press erroneously referred to upcoming season home games with Georgia Tech, Kansas State and Texas A&M. Those teams visit Kansas in 2010.
So they mention the incorrect use of “upcoming season” in the article when referring to the 2010 season (like you pointed out) but make no mention of the erroneous comment in the story that says “Quarterback Todd Reesing and his teammates will face some daunting road games.”
I think it’s funny that the AP realized they were wrong to use “upcoming season” in reference to the 2010 season but didn’t realize that Todd Reesing is a Sr. this year and won’t be our QB in 2010.
Honestly, I’m cautiously pleased with the addition of Georgia Tech. 2010 will be a year where we will need to prove that we can continue the momentum. Much like Missouri is facing this year, we will face doubters and many will be waiting for us to plummet back to “reality”, we can’t let that happen or every recruit we go after will be hearing “I told you so.” If we succesfully negotiate that non-conference schedule we will certainly be better for it, but it does diminish our margin of error in what will be a critical season in my opinion.
That's what we do at Kansas, we WIN.

I like it
We will be young, and win or lose tough non-con competition can only help the younger players for the future, especially a big game, televised, expectations, etc. GTech would actually have been a good matchup for us presently and recently, because our latest trend has seemed to be good against the run and poor against the pass (although I attribute a lot of this to a lack of pass rush) but by then who knows.
I predict KU 34, GTech 30. Yeah I’m making predictions now, so what?!!?!?!
I think our LB's
have been a big part of our strength against the run. The last two LB groups to come through were built for the pre-spread era and big guys that could read, react and hit. It will be interesting going into the G-Tech game as our LB stance seems to have changed and we are moving much more toward smaller more athletic guys.
Regardless one thing I am excited about is that it is at home in 2010 so at least our new QB won’t have to go on the road against that type of opponent so early.
