Kansas eliminates Coastal Carolina 5-1. Jayhawks to meet Tar Heels at 4PM.

Kansas defeated Coastal Carolina 5-1 in the afternoon game.  The win eliminates the Chanticleers (47-16) and allows Kansas (39-23) to advance to the afternoon game vs. North Carolina (44-16).  First pitch of the KU – UNC game will be 4PM.

You can watch the game live here.

The afternoon game was a white knuckle pitching duel through six innings.  KU scored a single run in the bottom of the first inning on a Robby Price walk and a Brian Heere single.  Cameron Selik controlled the powerful CCU offense all afternoon but KU failed to extend their lead multiple times.  CCU tied up the game at one in the top of the seventh on Jose Iglesias’s solo homerun.  Selik was pulled after 6.2 innings of three hit, one run baseball.

Kansas finally broke the game open by scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh.  Tony Thompson hit a leadoff double.  A Nick Faunce walk and Zac Elgie single loaded the bases.  James Stanfield broke the tie with an RBI ground out.  David Narodowski delivered a two out single to bring home two insurance runs and stake the Jayhawks to a 4-1 lead.  KU added another run in the bottom of the 8th on Tony Thompson’s 20th homerun of the year.

Brett Bochy (6-0) pitched the final 2.1 innings of the game for the win.

If Kansas loses this afternoon to North Carolina the Tar Heels will move on the next round.  If KU wins the two teams will meet again Monday afternoon in an elimination game.

North Carolina 12 - Kansas 1 FINAL.

This end KU's season.  The Jayhawks had a great year.  They finish 39-24 and performed well in the tournament, going 2-2.  I'll be posting a few wrap up stories in the next week.  Congratulations to the team and Head Coach Ritch Price on a very solid 2009 campaign.

I will be at Bigg's BBQ in Lawrence to watch the second game.

Anyone in the area is more than welcome to join us.

Let’s go Hawks!

OK. That's nice and sweet.

Realistically, I just wanted to get to Sunday evening. That was the goal. I suppose that’s pretty much like winning your first round game in the NCAA Tournament, which would be a pretty good feat for this team.

Any more wins would be quite awesome, though. So, please. Let’s just win and force a Monday game.

Fantastic performance from Cameron Selik. Not a bad time to have your best game of the year (ever?).

I know it’s not really all that important right now, but I wonder how many juniors will be drafted. Shaffer is probably a guarantee, but anyone besides that? Narodowski has been fantastic lately, so I figure he’ll at least get a look-see. Anyone else, though?

by rockchalk on May 31, 2009 3:40 PM CDT reply actions

Shaeffer Hall and David Narodowski are the only two non-seniors who might be drafted.

Travis Blankenship is draft eligable. It is possible that Brian Heere is as well. He red shirted his true freshman year.

Cameron Selik, Thomas Marcin, Brett Bollman and Robby Price will also be eligable but I do not expect any will be leave.

I think that is all.

I'm not complaining or anything.

Because I am super-glad that I get to actually watch the game.

But this is the type of video quality I was expecting to see all along, but most have been way better than that. This isn’t. It’s very grainy, and the audio was absolutely terrible, then broke out into random radio spots, so we’ll see how that all works out.

And, here comes the play-by-play.

by rockchalk on May 31, 2009 4:01 PM CDT reply actions

Blankenship with the start.

Just his second start of the season.

Let’s hope he can have a career day, just like Selik did.

Douple play to get out of the inning.

Although, Dustin Ackley did give his ball QUITE the ride. Just ten-or-so feet away from a 2-run HR.

Let’s score some runs, whaddyasay?

by rockchalk on May 31, 2009 4:03 PM CDT reply actions

Leadoff single by Narodowski.

Bunted over to second by Robby Price. Groundout from Heere sent Nardo to third.

But Buck Afenir struck out to end the inning.

Leadoff double by the Tar Heels.

But they strand him with a linedrive to center, grounder to first and a K by Blankenship.

He threw quite a few pitches that inning, but I’ll take it. Just get us 5 innings of shutout ball, and you get a huge high-five.

Let’s score some runs.

I don't know.

The link above works, though, for the video.

Like I said, not the best feed, but they actually have audio now (including Kevin Romary of Lawrence’s TV station, if I’m not mistaken), and it’s fun.

Jayhawks go 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 2nd.

Flyout to right from Tony Thompson, flyout to left from unknown player (I think it was Casey Lytle) and then a lineout/pop-up to second.

Lineup, by the way, is:

Narodowski
Price
Heere
Afenir
Thompson
Stanfield
Faunce
Elgie
Brunansky

Based loaded for the Tar Heels.

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy.

Only one out.

A single off of the outfield wall (it was hit so hard, Faunce got it in in time to hold him at first), then a HBP and then a walk of one Dustin Ackley.

by rockchalk on May 31, 2009 4:34 PM CDT reply actions

Dangit x 2.

Two-RBI single from the Tar Heels make it 2-0, with runners on first and third.

Still only one out.

Seger just stole second, so make it 2nd and 3rd.

Gotta get out of this inning without any more runs scored, I think. We don’t have the firepower to get into a slugfest with the Tar Heels.

by rockchalk on May 31, 2009 4:38 PM CDT reply actions

3-0.

The Royals fan in me is telling me that that this game is over. We’ll see, but ouch.

Blankenship is now pitching terribly.

Just plunked a guy, now it’s bases loaded.

We need a new pitcher.

We need a new pitcher.

We need a new pitcher.

by rockchalk on May 31, 2009 4:39 PM CDT reply actions

Called strike three from Blankenship.

Brett Bollman now coming in.

I sincerely hope that he can get out of this jam. And then pitch the rest of the game without giving up any runs.

And we score at least 4.

That would be awesome.

by rockchalk on May 31, 2009 4:44 PM CDT reply actions

Grand slam.

Game is pretty much over, now.

It sucks, too. Brunansky’s glove wasn’t too far off from the ball. He was just a foot-or-so from an absolutely incredible, game-changing catch.

But, it wasn’t to be.

We’re doing our best to mimic Missouri, who fell behind Western Kentucky 7-0 early on. They mounted a semi-comeback, but never seriously threatened and lost 11-6 earlier this morning. I have a bad feeling that is what is going to happen here.

by rockchalk on May 31, 2009 4:47 PM CDT reply actions

But hey, at least we aren't Ohio State:

Florida State, with one out in the top of the 5th (now 2) and runners on first and second, are beating the Buckeyes by a score of 32-0.

Yes, 32-0.

32-0.

As in, thirty-two to nothing.

32-0.

They scored 7 runs before even getting an out. 10 runs in the 5th before a batter was retired (and the out was a sacrifice fly, scoring the 11th run of the inning).

That is just crazy. 9-0 is bad, but it is certainly no 32-0.

32-0.

North Carolina 12 - Kansas 1 FINAL

Tony Thompson hit his 21st homerun of the year in the bottom of the 9th to deny the Tar Heels the shutout.

This ends KU’s season. They did great in 2009.

What recruits is KU baseball bringing in? Two years ago I remember reading about Tony Thompson as a future star. Last year was all about the two guys who were drafted, and they both contributed with bright futures ahead. So who are we signing this year that is worth getting excited for?
