Wow. Good thing we won, otherwise that would get messy for them.

I'd be a little nervous...

if I was Kentucky…this had been rumored for a while and I suspect he’ll try to continue doing his thing in Lexington. Look at Kelvin Sampson…he ran from it once but had the arrogance to continue to dick around and Calipari might be one of the most pompous coaches of all time.

F Kentucky,

they knew exactly what they were getting. They didn’t like a coach trying it a different way, they had to feel comfortable.

If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.

Here is the report..

the internet world is blowing up with this story…I don’t think their are many in the world that would mind if Coach Cal went down in flames…well maybe not those in Lexington but almost anywhere else.

Im sorry but..

If you have the opportunity to go to high school for four years, then you should be able to get a decent score on the SAT/ACT. It isn’t an IQ test. I don’t feel bad for any of those kids who can’t pass the test.

Really?!

You mean….
To tell me….
that Slime Cal was doing illegal things at Memphis?! Get the fuck outta here!! He surely wouldn’t have to do something like that to get all the best recruits in the country to a historically CBB powerhouse like Memphis. I mean, think of all the history there. THe kids should just come begging. i'm not buying this for one second

Wow

Been reading some various comments from Kentucky fans and I’ve seen a lot of “You can’t put this on Calipari because there are assistants, compliance staff, and administrators that all failed to do their jobs so blaming Coach Cal is stupid.”

I’d be willing to bet every dollar I’ve ever made in my life that those people would be singing a different tune if it wasn’t their precious coach. Aaaand just like that I appreciate the awesomeness that is Bill Self a little more.

I’ve had several Kentucky fans call me a “f*cking idiot” for suggesting that Calarmari has anything to do with this. At what point do they start to realize that being full-scale delusional doesn’t make you a good fan?

That will happen at the exact moment that Calipari stops winning games.

As long as he wins, UK fans will love him and make excuses. If he does not win, they will find any reason in the world to get rid of him. UK athletics is a classless organization.

File this under "least surprising news of the month"

The University of Kentucky and Calipari are a very well matched pair.

I'm no Calipari fan but...

Assuming there’s no evidence to indicate Memphis was involved in Rose’s fraudulent SAT score, holding Memphis and Coach Cal responsible for it would be a bit unfair in my opinion. It would be like holding KU and Coach Self responsible for the stuff involving Darrell Arthur which I think we all agree would be unfair since it happend while the recruit was in high school and it is the NCAA Clearinghouse that is responsible for reviewing transcripts and test scores and certifying an athlete’s initial collegiate eligibility.

As for the inappropriate travel benefits (~$2,200) attributed to Rose’s brother, that does fall on Memphis for not getting reimbursed for those expenses but I think it could be argued that’s not a huge deal – certainly not worth big penalties in and of itself in my opinion.

To me, the big story here is that UK knew of the allegations involving Memphis and hired Calipari anyway. Even if Calipari is completely absolved of any involvement in the Memphis allegations, the fact is this is the 2nd time (at 2 different institutions) that actual/alleged NCAA violations have occurred involving Calipari’s program. Speaking for myself, those are clearly red flags that would make me leery of hiring Calipari, particularly if I represent a historically elite program. If I was a UK fan, I wouldn’t necessarily be worried about what’s going on at Memphis, but I would probably be at least a bit concerned that trouble seems to follow Calipari regardless of whether he’s directly involved in that trouble or not.

One article I read said it well

Basically said that Calipari can get your school a Final Four banner, but keeping it is getting increasingly difficult.

Nice.

Yea, it’s funny to read A Sea Of Blue(the UK SB blog) and see them try to defend all the Calipari baggage. They do have an excellent moderator and the blog trends a little older, so they’re not all swallowing the kool-aid. They’ve been soft-soaping this news, but they were pretty pissed that Cal just flat-out ran off a bunch of scholarship players for his new recruits.

Think of it this way, Jayhawk fans:

We beat a pro team for the national championship! How cool is that?

by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on May 30, 2009 2:30 PM CDT reply actions

Technically not...

unless I’m mistaken (always a possibility). The complaint doesn’t claim that Rose was paid (and therefore a professional and not an amateur), but rather that he was likely not eligible due to his failure to qualify academically. Just a difference in fact is all.

The bigger question to me is this. Say Mario misses his 3 to tie and Memphis wins. It’s never happened before in NCAA history that a national champion has been stripped of its title, but in a championship game situation, if the winner is later forced to forfeit (for whatever reason), does the runner-up become the champion? Logic would say yes, unless the NCAA were comfortable NOT awarding a champion for that year. If the NCAA went that route, though the runner-up would have a pretty sizable beef, as they were the only team to “legitimately” win a national semi-final game.

As I said, it’s never happened before, and I seriously hope it never does, but it makes you wonder (at least it does me). I’d appreciate other thoughts on this.

by Bensa on May 30, 2009 2:58 PM CDT up reply actions

I saw that, but

I’m not sure that makes Rose a “professional.” Probably splitting hairs, though.

by Bensa on May 30, 2009 9:47 PM CDT up reply actions

The whole thing is shady

What the hell is Rose’s brother getting paid for? How do we know the money paid to his brother didn’t end up with him? Aghaghghagahg I hate controversy. Call me gunshy.

by A.J. Haefele on May 31, 2009 4:54 AM CDT up reply actions

IMO

You would HAVE TO give the championship to the team that the convicted cheating team beat. Like you said, they are the only team to have legitimately won a national semifinal game. Besides, I can’t see the NCAA not crowning a champion…
