Corn Blight over at Corn Nation takes a look at what could be a key factor when deciding the ultimate winner of the Big 12 North: Offensive line Experience. Definitely some good food for thought and our inexperience here shouldn't be overlooked, thoughts??

Uh...

Yeah. Right.

The fact that we have our starting QB, RB, top 3 WR’s and TE isn’t going to be what makes a difference. Instead, it’s going to be the ONE thing that they might have an advantage in.

Spare my remaining brain cells, please.

WTF

If you were looking for another reason to place Nebraska ahead of Kansas in the race to win the Big 12 North in 2009,

These people are worse than the damn Mizwho fans. ANOTHER reason?!?! Was there a FIRST one in the first place?!

HAHA!

Thanks, Warden. But, seriously, isn’t that just completely delusional and bat-shit?

I think it's a bit delusional to think...

there are a multitude of reasons that we shouldn’t be the favorite but I do think it’s pretty reasonable that if you were going to point to one, it would be the inexperience on the o-line.

Don’t get me wrong I’m with ya on this to an extent and I wouldn’t expect anything less from you than the reaction you had, but I have to admit the o-line will be an area I’ll be watching in those first four weeks with major interest to see what we might be getting.

Offensive Line

As important as I think an offensive line is, I feel that Reesing has the ability to negate that with his experience and his ability to buy time in the pocket. Plus didn’t we have three returning starters last year in the middle and it didn’t do us a lot of good, did it?

Addition by subtraction.

The Corn is off its rocker.

that would tend to be my opinion as well...

I’d much prefer breaking in this o-line with Reesing and the other weapons we have vs. next year w/a new QB…combine that with the fact that the spread offense tends to give up the least sacks of any scheme in football due to quick routes and quick reads and I’m ok with it.

…and as I mentioned in the comments of the article, while this offensive line may have less experience…they are more talented.

Corn Nation is a big Husker baseball fan.

He’s had a rough spring. We need to go easy on him right now. Let him ride this wave of optimism for a while.

I haven't read his post yet...

but we’d be crazy not to take this into account. Todd and the skill players are unquestionably great – though Dez Briscoe’s current situation has my pretty worried. But our line play on both sides was (BY FAR) our biggest flaw last year and part of that was inexperience at the tackle spots.

Sure, I’ve got high hopes for our new guys stepping in but I had high hopes for the guys last year as well and sure enough, they went through some growing pains…and really, never were quite up to par against the betetr competition. The Nebraska game in particular we were absolutely controlled on the LOS no matter who had the ball and it was a true testament to Todd that we were in a position to win that game so deep into the fourth quarter.

I’m not saying we can’t or won’t win the north because of this, but it’s certainly issue #2, right behind schedule differences.

yep...

couldn’t agree more…although I do think that while the growing pains of our tackles last year was a big part of the struggle, it’s often overlooked that the interior which was expected to be a strength ended up struggling just as much. Here’s hoping this unit can come together quickly and ease our concerns.

This has been a naggin worry of mine all off-season

It seemed that towards the end of the season, Hatch and Spikes were settling into a groove at OT and I had some optimism coming out of December at least knowing that our tackle situation was under control.

When Mangenius moved Hatch to the interior from the all-important LT spot it really threw up red flags. We are going into a tough schedule with probably the highest expectations this program has ever seen with a brand new (in every sense of the word) LT.

It has me more than a little worried.

Does anyone remember the USF game last year. We owed them in every spot except the line and it cost us the game.

I've got crazy flipper fingers!

by labbadabba on May 28, 2009 12:09 PM CDT reply actions

I actually looked at that a different way...

although maybe I’m just spinning it optimistically. My feeling was that if Mangino was truly comfortable enough to move our most proven lineman out of the most important spot on the line, he must really have a lot of confidence in Hawkinson. Otherwise, with the talent we have coming back, there’s no way he makes that move this year. And seeing at the spring game how quick Hawkinson was back into his stance and how much arm length he has, I really became a believer. He’s got a long way to go and a mauler he’s not, but he won’t get beat off the edge all game either, as Hatch (and Spikes) were prone to do.

by hiphopopotamus on May 28, 2009 1:25 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah I thought the move to Hawkinson....

was more decisive and confident than they seemed even last year when they moved Spikes to LT. It seemed like even though they were high on Spikes last year, it wasn’t quite the complete confidence that they have in Hawkinson and it was also out of necessity. This year wouldn’t really require them to place a new LT if they didn’t want to, whereas last year they didn’t have a choice. Says to me that Hawkinson must be showing something and Hatch must also look like a beast in the middle.

OT, but still football:

I was on the Miami Hurricanes Rivals page, cuz I’m a ’Canes fan, too, and I found an interesting little tidbit of info. This is a guy that we are hard after and really trying to bring to Lawrence:

Ocala (FL) Trinity Catholic High School WR Kadron Boone boasts strong bloodlines.

His cousins are former Cane Devin Hester and former Gator Earl Everett.
