Big-12 Tournament Game #1: Kansas vs. Kansas State

#4 Kansas State (39-15-1) vs. #5 Kansas (37-19)

First pitch 9AM

Free stream video here.

Kansas State has decided to hold back Big-12 Pitcher of the Year A.J. Morris and start Lance Hoge instead.  Hoge (5-4) is a left handed senior.  In 61.2 Innings he has given up 63 hits and has a 4.53 ERA.  He has struck out 40 and walked 19, so he is a solid opponent.  KU roughed him up on Saturday, scoring 5 runs on him in only two innings.  Hoge was pulled after 57 pitches so he should be fresh for Wednesday's game.  KU will send Shaeffer Hall to the mound.  Hall is 4-6 with a 4.60 ERA in 78.1 innnings.  Hall pitched 5.2 innings on Friday (81 pitches) in KU's 4-1 loss in Manhattan.

Full KSU stats found here.

Links to KU pitching and hitting updates.

I'll be watching the game and posting updates here.  Set your alarms, grab your coffee and cheer on the Hawks tomorrow morning!

All games except the championship will be streamed live so plan ahead.

Game #2 vs. Texas - Thursday @ 3PM

Game #3 vs. Baylor - Saturday @ 9AM

Championship - Sunday @ 1PM (broadcast live on FSN)

Game underway.

Narodowski flies out to open the game.

I am listening to the KLWN broadcast with Tom Hedrick and Mike Cummings. They are about 10 seconds ahead of the video.

Kansas 0 - Kansas State 0 (End of 1)

Shaeffer Hall sets down the Wildcats in order.

David Narodowski completely fooled the camera man in the inning. Carter Jurica hit a ground ball to the 6-5 hole. The camera man panned to the outfield having no clue that Nardowski would get to it and throw out Jurica at 1st.

Love that they're hitting Hoge some...

but sooner or later, all of these wasted opportunities are bound to catch up to them.

The Big-12 tournament is using Live Stats instead of Game Tracker. Why? No really, why does any school use this service? It is simply terrible. I can only think it is a financial decision.

Thanks,

Actually I have had press credintials for a few years. I only use them for a few press conferences each year. I was offered them for the tournament but could not make the games. If the Hawks make the chamionship I might be able to make that game at least.

Mike Cummings and Coach Price are good friends to Rock Chalk Talk. They treat us the same as they treat the newpapers and TV reporters.

Now what I’d love is comp tickets! Still waiting on those.

damn lost the lead

JQ – what does KU have to do this weekend in your mind to make a regional?

by I need more Esteban on May 20, 2009 11:51 AM CDT reply actions

Not directed at me...

but I really think even a winless week in OKC will still leave us in a regional. Wouldn’t help our seeding or placement much though.

I agree

I think they’re a 3 or a 4 pretty much no matter what happens.

Fetch and Hip are on target I think.

KU is in already. Even if they go 0-3 in Bricktown they look good for an at-large. If KU actually wins the tournament I am open the the idea they might be considered for a regional host slot.

with an outside shot at a 2...

if they made a run to Sunday. Really though, no difference between a 2 and a 3 in these 4 team regionals

by hiphopopotamus on May 20, 2009 11:55 AM CDT up reply actions

Heck I'd almost rather be a 4

We wouldn’t see a 1 seed’s ace, and if you get the right team (say lefty-heavy UNC) Shaeffer Hall could do a good job against them. Of course UNC is probably a bad example since they’re fairly deep on the mound. But they were the first team to come to mind.

KU 4 - KSU 5 (after 8)

Selik still pitching for KU.
King – F7. 1 out.
Biery – F7. Nice catch by Lytle. 2 outs
Cruz – single up the middle.
Vaughn – single falls in front of Brunansky. Bruno lets the ball get away from him and Cruz scores. Bruno does not play the tweener well again. He’s had a lot of trouble with that all year long. Vaugh to 2nd. Official scorer calls it a double but it probably was a single with the extra base by Vaughn and Cuz both on an E8. KSU up 5-4.
Yelovich – Line drive caught by Thompson. Nice play. Inning over.

Allen still pitching for KSU -

Afenir – K. 1 out.
Thompson – Single. Tony has 4 hits today!.
Lytle – K. 2 outs.
Faunce PH for Land – Pops to short. End of game.

KU got 15 hits but only 4 runs. Late KU defensive mistakes made the difference.

Damn...

that’s a real tough loss. I had a bad feeling all day that we were wasting too many golden opprtunities. And like you said, combine that with some defensive miscues and you’re ripe for giving one away.
