NCAA Tournament: National Championship
Well, it's been a fun year folks. A fantastic, enjoyable, delightful year.
Hopefully next year, we'll be playing in this game.
But tonight, it isn't about Kansas. It's all about Sparty.
Go Michigan State!

Where is everybody?
Come on, folks.
It’s the National Championship!
Honestly, the Baseball opening day has killed a bunch of the excitement, I’m sure.
I’ve been all-baseball pretty much all day long. Which is quite shocking, really, for me.
But, now it’s basketball time.
The Goranian scores! MSU up.
For about 5 seconds.
Hunter,
if you want your shirt, you need to email me so I know where to send it.
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.
Why don't we make a deal.
Tell me when you’re going to be in Lawrence, you buy me a shirt, I’ll buy the first couple rounds at Free State.

Pretty close to the same here.
I’m kinda rooting against Carolina.
by hunter s. royal on Apr 6, 2009 8:28 PM CDT up reply actions
You can just tackle a guy when a pass is coming to him?
That’s not even legal in football.
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.
Big 10 refs.
May not be enough for MSU though. Great start for Carolina.

Y'all are crazy.
For not rooting intensely for Michigan State.
Seriously, crazy.
If North Carolina wins…
I'm not a fan of either,
can’t just choose to root for somebody.
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.
a team the Hawks had
beat. I just can’t get over that game.
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.
You and me both.
I think we might be the only ones still suffering.
But I suppose I’m over it enough to be able to cheer for Sparty.
That game, though.
What an awful experience.
Seriously,
I can’t even get excited about all of the drama going on the last week.
Just very blah about basketball right now. Ready for the Royals to beat me down for awhile.
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.
I'm in the same boat.
I like basketball approximately 129384 times more than baseball, but I’m on the verge of switching over and watching some baseball, right now, instead of watching this game.
For once, maybe for the first time ever, I’m ready for baseball season. Can’t wait.
Ready to get basketball over and move on to next season.
Although, I’ll still watch the NBA Playoffs.
of course,
UNC laying the smack down already isn’t helping this game.
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.
I'm ready for baseball:
But the NBA just bores me. I don’t understand how college is so good, and the pros are so drab.
by hunter s. royal on Apr 6, 2009 8:43 PM CDT up reply actions
I've always thought that before.
But this season, I’ll watch it if nothing else is on and not poke my eyes out.
It doesn’t compare to CBB, in any way whatsoever, but it’s interesting.
Please explain
how you are such a college basketball fan but also like the NBA.
If it’s just that you like the playoffs, fair enough. Regular season NBA basketball is nearly unwatchable.
I've really only just watched the playoffs my entire life.
Considering expanding it for next season.
I’ve watched more this year than ever before, and it’s better than I thought. Doesn’t compare to CBB in any way, but still fun to watch.
The only games I really watch
are my hometown Bulls and the Heat, because I love watching Chalmers play.
I "picked up" the Thunder this season.
They were the worst, so I figured I would get ino n the ground floor.
Whenever they are on, I’ll watch Brandon or Mario.
This Carolina start:
Is what we should have had against MSU. Instead, we let them hang around too long.
by hunter s. royal on Apr 6, 2009 8:37 PM CDT up reply actions
Eh.
We jumped out to a pretty sizable lead.
9-2, then they got hot and came back.
But after that, we went on another little run and had a double-digit lead, IIRC. Maybe I’m way off, though.
I still want to watch the game again, but haven’t had the stomach to as of yet.
Hansbrough better not pass Manning.
Then, some people might actually (gag) think he’s a better player.
State has to start driving.
They are getting some calls, for once, and they can’t hit a jump shot to save their lives.
Obviously, they will have to hit the jumpers they take, too but they need opportunities closer to the bucket.
CBS wishes we did.
This game is awful.
by hunter s. royal on Apr 6, 2009 8:51 PM CDT up reply actions
UConn-UNC would have been way more fun to watch.
It was a lose-lose situation, though, so I’d rather just have the chance of a “good guy” winning than have a better shot at a good game.
That’s just me, though.
UNC
is just not a good matchup for Michigan State. In a tournament more about matchups than record or pedigree, MSU is in big trouble in this one.
Game. Over.
Boo, boo, boo.
This sucks, sucks, sucks.
Oh, well.
Congrats Roy on winning a NC. Your first ever one with “your” players. I’m happy for you, honestly.
Can’t say the same for Hansbrough.
Love Lawson, Ellington and Green, though.
Maybe they'll get 129.
MSU isn’t cheering anybody up in Detroit so far.
by hunter s. royal on Apr 6, 2009 8:53 PM CDT up reply actions
The best part about this game.
Is the constant references to our absolute beatdown of the Heels last year.
I think, to make myself feel better, I’m going to watch that game later tonight.
I’ve never seen either that game or the NC game in completion since the live viewings.
I’ve watched parts of the NC game countless times, but have never gone beyond the 40-12 start actually.
So, that’s the plan. Watching KU-UNC from the Final Four last year in, oh, about 2 hours.
Definitely watched the 2008 National Championship game this afternoon
something of an anniversary, if you will…
I only started watching about 10 minutes ago, but have already caught 2 or 3 references to the “embarrassing” loss to Kansas last year. Brings a smile to my face every time.
Ty Lawson could bring out a shank
and stab Lucas in the leg, and nothing would get called.
The guy is good, I know, but if he has gotten away with this all year…no wonder.
Why???
Why do so many teams just play so stupid against North Carolina? How hard is it to slow the f*ck down and execute your offense?
KU proved what disciplined, talented teams can do to the secondary break offense.
Ehhhhhhhhhh…..
by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Apr 6, 2009 9:08 PM CDT reply actions
Yeah.
I don’t think that last year’s KU team would have too much trouble with this MSU team, though, either.
This team got hot as hell for its last 85 minutes of game action (last 5 vs. KU, 40 against both L’Ville and UConn), and played awesome. But this team, in its true form, is showing up today.
Ugh, ugh, ugh.
Magic has eligibility left.
Let him play. Off course, he kinda looks like an offensive lineman now.
by hunter s. royal on Apr 6, 2009 9:13 PM CDT up reply actions
Did anybody else
just hear Jim Nance call 911 for Lawson on account of his eye?
Could’ve sworn I heard that.
Izzo should show that to his team at halftime:
Scare them back into the game. Kill the freakin aliens before they reproduce!
by hunter s. royal on Apr 6, 2009 9:20 PM CDT up reply actions
So, just for fun.
If you’re Tom Izzo, what do you say right here?
If I were him, I’d read off some really sad sob stories from the poorest of the poor in Detroit.
Then say that if they don’t come back and win, you’ve let down millions of people like that.
Put some pressure on them, see how they react.
That’s pretty awful, though, isn’t it?
How about:
Magic will sit on you if you don’t play better. Also, CBS talking heads who think this is unprecedented; Remember 40-12!!!! Last freaking year? (Not the final I guess, but close enough)

What bothers me is....
Shay Wildeboor from Rivals tried to call X, Carl, CJ, Barbara…no one answered…and then tried texting X, Carl, CJ and no one replied….Either Shay needs a new phone or something fishy is going on…then again they are probably getting a shit ton of calls as of late so who knows….
Maybe there was a family meeting:
And they all agreed Carl should shut the hell up.
by hunter s. royal on Apr 6, 2009 9:55 PM CDT up reply actions
Maybe I'm alone.
But I don’t care all that much if we get them or not.
Maybe it’s stupid, and it probably is. Obviously, we’d be a better team with one of them.
But as long as Sherron and Cole come back, we’re NC contenders. If Cole and Sherron come back, I’m money for everything else.
I suppose Lawson will get a triple double
and be MOP, eclipsing every MOP since Bill Walton in the process.
At least he deserves the pub more than psycho t.
A down year for college b-ball, and Carolina can’t miss shots in the tournament.
by hunter s. royal on Apr 6, 2009 9:53 PM CDT up reply actions
Disagree on the down year for CBB.
A down year at the tip-top, maybe, yes.
But CBB is stronger than ever. It’s just spread, parity-wise, throughout teams 12-80 more at this point than any other time.
So many teams, now, are ‘kinda-good’, or ‘sorta-good’, or ‘can be good, but can be bad’. So many. WAaaay more “decent” teams than ever before, with not as many “good” teams.
Overall, CBB is awesomely strong and will continue to get stronger. It just won’t manifest itself in the Tournament every year.
I meant at the very top.
I agree, lots of good teams this year, and very entertaining. Just not the powerhouses at the very top.
by hunter s. royal on Apr 6, 2009 9:59 PM CDT up reply actions
I think that will stay the same for awhile, though.
The super-powers will almost always be up there, but even some of them have off-years (UConn a couple of years ago, UCLA kinda-sorta this year).
Beyond that, the teams have gotten so muddled up it will be tough for any teams to really break out.
Doing the Top 25 this year, filling out any teams beyond, really, 5 became incredibly difficult. You’d have the obvious top teams, but after that, it’s just a matter of what you prefer over what. So many teams having so identical resumes, it’s scary.
From what Jim Nantz says,
Ty Lawson is easily going to be the bestest point guard ever.
Oh, and did you hear? I know they haven’t mentioned it in the broadcast at all, but he won the Bob Cousy Award today.
Lawson is good, but Sherron Collins is better.
Graphic.
East Coast bias won’t stop until there isn’t an East Coast. Meaning…such is life. I’ve gotten rather fond of toiling in obscurity and watching as my teams/players on those teams are frequently shafted for honors they deserve in favor of guys the media likes more.
More and more, it’s their world and we’re just stuck in it.
by A.J. Haefele on Apr 6, 2009 10:04 PM CDT up reply actions
Sherron & Lawson seem very similar to me.
Lawson benefits greatly from the players around him. Sherron comes back with the maturation of the players around him and he’ll be incredible.
by hunter s. royal on Apr 6, 2009 10:04 PM CDT up reply actions
Yep.
It’s actually the first non-Kansas Championship Game I’ve watched since, well, um, 2004?
Who played that year?
Oh, yeah. UConn-Georgia Tech. Yeah, I watched that.
That is awfully weird, though.
And, really, this is the first non-Kansas NC game that I’ve watched from start-to-finish ever. That’s sad, yes, but it’s the truth.
Hold that.
I did watch the 2002 final…because I was in the Georgia Dome.
First entire game I’ve watched on TV.
I usually watch them
because it’s like saying goodbye to a dear friend of mine, but this year with UNC in it…I couldn’t stand to watch Roy win one. Last year’s wafflestomping on his face was extremely helpful in allowing me to move on from my pain and anger, but one or two more would probably fix me right up. I still feel the sting of his spear in my back when I turn the wrong way sometimes.

Michigan State just can't buy a three.
You can’t win against really good teams without hitting the three.
Villanova couldn’t hit one on Saturday afternoon. Now Michigan State can’t hit one.
This sucks.
Well clearly:
NC is the greatest NCAA champion ever! Lew Alcindor & Bill Walton are just lucky they never had to face Psycho T.

So just to get this straight.
Ty Lawson tackles Lucious, but Lucious is the one who gets called for the foul?
OK, because that makes sense.
These broadcasters...suck.
Jim Nantz’ sucktitude is well-documented. He just called USC a 7-seed, or I suppose you could say that he said that Boston College beat USC. Either way, ouch. Way to know the freaking path of two teams.
Second off, Clark Kellogg repeatedly said there would be 7 seconds on the shot clock…there was 15 because of the kicekd ball.
It’s hard enough to watch this game with the score. IT’s becoming practically impossible to watch with terrible reffing and even worse officiating.
The mute button.

Yes.
Or, just get broadcasters who don’t talk non-fucking-stop.
Get someone who just tells you what is going on. Every once in awhile, during FT’s and things, tell cute little stories.
The constant chatter is what is so annyojing.
I agree.

Don't bring up the Wears.
I can’t stand them.
They go to my rival HS way out here in So Cal.
This past season, when they came to our gym (and beat us by 45 points, but that’s beside the point), I spent the entire night giving the Wear twins hell. That’s all I did the entire game. Whenever it got quiet, during FT’s or something, I’d yell out something derogatory about UNC.
I got some laughs from their bench, too. And once, one of them (David, I think) glared over straight at me. It was totally worth it, though.
And you gave KC hell about risque pictures!

unfortunately, they literally showed not a single Kansas highlight on one shining moment
the only thing that came even close was showing Kalin Lucas’s and-one against us that won the game.
i’m literally speechless right now, they show highlights of 64 teams during that 3-minute song and not ONCE do they show the team that’s won elevn tourney games in the last 3 years.
un-fuckin-real
They were afraid.
Referencing anything from last year would have shown how awful & boring this years game was. You go from one of the most thrilling games in NCAA history to Roy’s deadly dull coronation.
by hunter s. royal on Apr 6, 2009 11:27 PM CDT up reply actions
no i didn't mean i expected them to show highlights from past tournaments or anything,
but you would think that the team that one year ago gave them their most exciting title game in decades would be shown a little more love. i mean for the love of God, they show about 450 video snippets during that song, and not a single one featured the ’hawks… it just seems strange to me because only 8 teams lasted longer than Kansas this year, so given all that potential video footage of KU tourney highlights at their disposal, it would seem almost as if they for some reason went out of their way to not feature Kansas in the video.
the only thing that i can think of is maybe the One Shining Moment montage is meant to be more for the seniors who have like, “come to the end of their journey” or something, and since Kansas didn’t play any seniors they left ’em out. but still, it obviously really struck a nerve with me.
Bad Barney.
