Around SBN: Chan Sung Jung Wins Thriller Over Dustin Poirier

UPDATE #2: Might as well call this what it is...we went from a Mike Anderson story Fanshot to an Open Thread regarding all the bball rumors swirling the internet world today...feel free to hypothesize with KC and company.

UPDATE: Things change quickly so I've had to rename the title

You'd think the Final Four wasn't this coming weekend with the way things are spinning in College Basketball right now. The good news for Mizzou is Anderson is meeting with school officials. That says to me the guy probably wants to stay but he also wants to get paid. Your move Mike Alden.

Wasn't Mike Anderson going to Memphis yesterday?

www.rockchalktalk.com for pretty good KU baseball coverage

by James Quinn on Mar 31, 2009 11:56 AM CDT reply actions

Problem there is Calipari keeps dragging his feet on that one...

there was a plane tracked out of Jefferson City that supposedly had Anderson on it though that flew to Georgia, back through Memphis, before returning late last night. Who knows what rumors are true or false at this point but I guess this is at least a confirmed offer.

At first glance I would say the same...

but there must be something intriguing about this job. Obviously there is a lot of money being thrown around for one, but when this thing first opened up even Bob Knight’s name was floated around. He let it be known that he would be interested in it, but it didn’t appear to be mutual.

I don't know what would be intriguing, going to the football dominated SEC

doesn’t seem intriguing at all, maybe if Calipari went to UK there would be more incentive but as of now, the Big 12 is a much much better basketball conference.

crazy that right now the whole world seems to...

be waiting for the final final final word from Cal…seems like we’ve heard it reported 3-4 times already but it’s still not official.

Don't you just love...

seeing all of this make Mizzou fans squirm. Lord knows they’ve had a chuckle or two the three times (2x with Roy, once with Bill) KU has had to deal with this kind of thing over the last decade.

by KU_Lew on Mar 31, 2009 12:30 PM CDT reply actions

Is that actually Lew Perkins i hear gloating?

Poor Mike Alden…guy can’t get any credit for hiring two of the best coaches Mizzou has ever had, while meanwhile we love the shit out of our moneygrubbing cigar smokin ADominator.

My KU friends actually call me Sweet Lew

but I was at KU a decade or so before Perkins arrived. Thought I’d go with KU_Lew as my handle instead of Sweet Lew to avoid the obvious reference but that didn’t work. I guess I should have put a little more thought into it.

if you really want to play some head games that'd do it...

it’s stupid out there right now…this Cal to Kentucky thing has turned the world upside down. Folks are talking Coaching Changes, contract extensions, recruits moving, letter of intent clauses all this noise…I can’t wait till the dust settles again.

I know this is the Stephenson stuff,

but I’m just gonna put it in here, so we can keep all rumors, stories, etc. in one place so we can have logical conversations without getting confused.

From ZagsBlog:

Stephenson is the No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2009 according to Hoop Scoop and No. 9 by Rivals. This marks the second time he has delayed his announcement. He was originally supposed to do it March 21 at Madison Square Garden, but held off.
"It wasn’t a change," he said. "It’s just been hard for me and my family to make a decision. I’m just going to wait it out."
He added: "This is my life. I want to go somewhere that I’m comfortable and I can play at."

by Owen on Mar 31, 2009 1:22 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm just not sure.

I mean, part of me says that if he was SET on KU, he would just announce it. But, also, I think he really wants the full spotlight on him, and with this Cal to United Kingdom thing going on, it won’t be. The line that scares me though – “It’s just been hard for me and my family to make a decision.” – That kinda sounds like he isn’t totally sold on his choice. But, then again, he could just be trying to hide his cards and speaking in circles, not knowing that he is inadvertently saying the wrong thing.

At this point, sure, it’s fun to speculate, but all it’s gonna do is freak people out. The Slant is going crazy right now.

Here ya go...

His recruitment will open up again if Cal leaves. Guy asks him if Kansas is in it – “Yeah, they were always in my top 2; Kansas and Memphis. So, I would look at them again.”
Guy *- “What is it about Kansas that you think would be a good fit?”
*Xavier -
“Everything. We are all close with Kansas and everything. Me and Coach Self are real close. I like know their style and like their style, and they are close to home. And my family wouldn’t mind moving up there.”
Guy- “Would the Oklahoma schools be an option at all?”
Xavier- (shakes head) “Naaah. I don’t particularly pay attention to OU or OSU.”
Guy- “What about your brother? Would he go to the same place, you think?”
Xavier- “Uh, I hope! I don’t know what he’s been thinking or anything. I guess after this thing is done, if he (Cal) stays or goes, if he stays we will obviously stay. But, if he goes, we will have to see how my family feels. We would have to split up and go to 2 different places or what.”
Guy- “So you WANT to be at Memphis? You are definitely hoping Calipari stays?”
Xavier- (nods head)
Guy- “So, what went through your head when all this hit?”
Xavier- “Man, I didn’t believe it at first. I was just like, people were saying that and more people were saying that, and I was just like ‘He wouldn’t do that to us.’ I’m sure if he does go, he’ll talk to me first.”

nothing official yet

Calipari is just asking questions. Sports guy is speculating that Calipari will draw this out and the decision won’t come today. He has 2 kids in High Schools next year.

He’s saying its not about the money. He’s still getting money from the New Jersey nets and has been making $2MM+ every year at Memphis. But apparently Kentucky is the notre dame of college bball

by labbadabba on Mar 31, 2009 3:58 PM CDT up reply actions

ok new theory...

Calipari never recruited Stephenson so maybe he has a problem with him personally. This is all a ploy to steal his thunder and hence the Stephenson delay. Cal is just going to be certain by dragging it out through the MCD’s game.

Joking of course but after all this is a rumor thread.

Calipari to Kentucky…not really going out on a limb here
Anderson to Memphis…don’t think he should but seems like that’s what MU fans are most nervous about
Stephenson to Kansas…still think this happens
Henry to Kansas…

ok ok so maybe that’s just the rumors I want to believe…that all can’t possibly happen

Just for the record...

I sincerely hope we don’t end up with both Stephenson (I’m not calling him Born Ready, at least not until he earns the damn nickname) and Xavier.

Sorry, but I feel “dirty” enough hoping a kid transfers just to pick up one scholarship for both Cole and Sherron to come back. One of them, fine. But right now, I’m not a big fan of either. Particularly Stephenson.

OK, good.

That would make it more likely for Brady to give up his scholarship.

Lance would have just come in and practically stolen a bunch of PT, too, which would have made it a double whammy.

So, come on Brady. Please?

by rockchalk on Mar 31, 2009 6:34 PM CDT up reply actions

But, either way, with a 3 guard system

Tyshawn would have just gone to the other spot with Lance. I mean, it’s gonna be Sherron, T2 and (X / Lance)…

by Andy Edwards on Mar 31, 2009 6:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Just not a big fan of the way he has handled his recruitment.

Just make a decision, man.

I’m not pressuring a decision, necessarily, but then don’t come out and give like 4 different dates to announce then continue to postpone.

Plus, from everything I’ve read, and the fact that he gave himself the nickname Born Ready, he seems to be quite full of himself. Which is fine, I suppose, but it takes away some of the mystique of rooting for a team, IMO.

I’d much, much rather prefer X, at this point.

by rockchalk on Mar 31, 2009 6:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Not enough.

Recruiting has never been my thing.

by rockchalk on Mar 31, 2009 6:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh, well...

The X recruitment was really nasty, and he ended up really dooping HCBS into thinking he was coming to KU, which caused Michael Snaer (McD AA) to commit to FSU because he thought X was KU-bound, otherwise we had Snaer. So, we lost out on Snaer, then X went Memphis. Also, his family (dad, IIRC) fed bad info. to the media, leading them to believe he was KU-bound.

by Andy Edwards on Mar 31, 2009 6:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Would CJ contribute to our team?

I mean, did he play much for memphis this year?

by play4'ships on Mar 31, 2009 6:35 PM CDT reply actions

he was going to be on scholly when he originally signed so...

I would think he’s at least Brady caliber…he’d also make Brady not the oldest on the team which is funny

CJ had a bad injury.

Shoulder, IIRC, and had to have surgery, so he never played, and I don’t think he ever even practiced this year.

Right.

But, the fact that we have him if somebody goes down, that kinda guy to fill in is a HUGE luxury.

by Andy Edwards on Mar 31, 2009 6:39 PM CDT up reply actions

He was highly rated out of high school.

I remember it being a pretty big deal when he went to baseball. Maybe I’m remembering wrong, but I’d hope he could contribute.

by hunter s. royal on Mar 31, 2009 6:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Would he get 4 years of eligiblity?

If so, I’d bet he would redshirt this first year.

But of course, did he redshirt this year with the injury?

Who knows. In any case, I don’t think he would steal too much playing time.

by rockchalk on Mar 31, 2009 6:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe

if we played a game of baseball at the Final Four to decide the national champ :)

He’s really athletic though so he could probably have a spot as an energy guy at least. And if it gets X to Lawrence I’ll have to not hate the Yankees (damnit). Or Phillies since they had him for awhile too.

PG – Sherron / EJ

C – Cole / Withey

by Owen on Mar 31, 2009 6:38 PM CDT up reply actions

I like it, obviously.

One of the Morrises/Robinson and Tyrel/Brady would likely be left out of the rotation, though, and that isn’t even getting to Travis.

Damn, that’d be amazing.

by rockchalk on Mar 31, 2009 6:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Another thought.

What if we redshirt Travis next year?

That way, he would still get 3 years of PT, and he should be an active producer starting in 2010-11 with Sherron leaving and (potentially) X leaving.

by rockchalk on Mar 31, 2009 6:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Still counts as a scholly,

and doesn’t help fix that situation, though. Otherwise, it would be great.

by Andy Edwards on Mar 31, 2009 6:43 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not talking about it from that perspective.

Just from him and his potential PT situation.

Scholarship-wise, Bill has to have a lead about players willing to give theirs up. Or about transfers.

Otherwise, I’d get super pissed. That’s not the way you do it, IMO. To just hope that the situation works itself out.

by rockchalk on Mar 31, 2009 6:44 PM CDT up reply actions

If Cole comes back,

Doesn’t it seem nearly guaranteed that Quintrell transfers? I just don’t see how he gets to play here. Heck, even if Cole doesn’t come back, he’d still be stuck behind the Morii for the next 3 years.

by play4'ships on Mar 31, 2009 6:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Sad, but probably true.

He’s behind both Morris’s and Thomas Robinson is supposed to be a great player. I don’t see where he’ll ever get much PT.

by hunter s. royal on Mar 31, 2009 6:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Depends.

A lot of people said the same about Darnell, and he waited it out and as a senior, after Julian’s departure, really exploded onto the scene.

You are right, though, that I doubt Quintrell would see any PT until his senior season. Maybe even requiring a redshirt along the lines.

If he’s willing to wait and put in the work, I would think he could stay and eventually see ~20 minutes a game. BUt if he wants to play more, then he’ll likely transfer.

Honestly, though, I’d much rather it be him than Releford. Both will be good players, I think, but Releford could be an absolute start, IMO. Quintrell’s absolute ceiling is Darnell.

by rockchalk on Mar 31, 2009 6:51 PM CDT up reply actions

I like that idea.

I really think he could add something to our team if found the playing time. I wanted to see him a couple of times in the tourney.

OK, Denver did it earlier, so I will do it now...

My predictions (in order of the domino effect)

John Calipari to Kentucky (done, already)
Anderson to Memphis (can’t turn down the reported money they are gonna be ready to throw at him after Cal breaks their hearts)
??? to Missouri (Melvin Watkins from within maybe, but NO WAY Gillespie goes there like some people are saying. He refused to play HCBS at UK, they DEFINITELY doesn’t want any part of each other in that rivalray)
Xavier Henry to Kansas (Johnny Lawrence says so)
CJ Henry to Kansas (JL says so)
Lance Stephenson to St. John’s (no other choice, really)
John Wall to Duke (Kentucky is already 2 schollies over, so he can’t go with Cal, and KU isn’t an option after X commits)

by Andy Edwards on Mar 31, 2009 7:03 PM CDT reply actions

Stephenson will go to Maryland.

Google up William Wesley.

There’s a great GQ article about him. He’s kind of a basketball insider who has a huge impact on college recruiting.

From the Xavier video though

I really got a since that the only reason he chose Memphis was because his brother was there and that he wanted to keep his family together. That is no longer the case. C.J. chose Kansas once no reason he won’t choose us again. Where are you getting this Andy Katz information is it on ESPN.com or TV?

by Jayhawks1209 on Mar 31, 2009 9:34 PM CDT reply actions

on TV...

Cal has said CJ is welcome to come to though…really hope we can pull this off because if not it’s going to look more and more like Xavier screwed us twice out of another top wing…first with Snaer and now likely w/Stephenson.

Who would you rather have Lance or Xavier?

by Jayhawks1209 on Mar 31, 2009 9:38 PM CDT reply actions

I'd be flipping a coin if I were to pick one for sake of talent.

They both have huge positives but I guess I’d probably say Xavier because Lance would then likely end up at St. Johns or Maryland and have little impact on things. If we got Lance, Xavier probably ends up at Kentucky with the rest of those guys and they’re not only a contender immediately but it sets a message around the country that Kentucky is the Elite school for recruits.

Again, if we get no one, I might not be all that pissed off.

Call me a sucker, but I think we would be a NC contender next year, anyways and it’d be more fun, to me, without a one-and-done type player.

I would accept either one, but it might be better off in the long run.

by jco8394 on Mar 31, 2009 9:50 PM CDT up reply actions

No, I agree.

Look above to my clarification.

I would prefer one, obviously, and would prefer X over Lance.

But in the end, as long as the two most important recruits (Cole and Sherron) are on the team next year, we are definitely a NC contender next year. Add in X/Lance, and we’re likely preseason #1.

by rockchalk on Mar 31, 2009 9:48 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree as well

We would be fine without either of them as long as Cole and Sherron come back, however, it would be a HUGE addition if we could get a strong wing scorer who could take away double teams from Cole

by Jayhawks1209 on Mar 31, 2009 9:47 PM CDT reply actions

exactly...HUGE as a 3rd scoring option from day one...

and frees up the middle for Cole…no way people can just sag in the middle if we’ve got Sherron and one of these guys on the perimeter. Plus both are considered excellent at getting to the basket, imagine adding another solid penetrating guard to go along with Sherron, tough for any defense to prepare for.

But, I will also say that, obviously, you have to have the talent in the first place to be good. You can get guys to work together and feed off of each other. But, it’s harder to make a guy an uber-talented player.

by Owen on Mar 31, 2009 10:19 PM CDT up reply actions

That said...

It only works if you can get EVERYBODY to buy into the team concept. Look at KU last year. 5 players drafted, another will be whenever he comes out (SC). Top scorer had 13 pts. per game. Why? Because Bill convinced them they’d be better off if they sacrificed for the team. I don’t see Cal preaching that to the degree Bill does. It probably helps him in recruiting, but it doesn’t help him win NCs.

by Bensa on Mar 31, 2009 10:16 PM CDT up reply actions

FWIW

I think Bill Self is one of the best coaches currently that keeps players around longer than 1 year. Has he ever lost one to the NBA? Certainly not here at KU.

Rush stayed, Arthur stayed. It’s possible that X or Lance would leave after 1, and that’s all well and good, but he usually convinces kids (rightly, I believe) that they will improve more under him for another year than they would on the end of the bench in the NBA.

The only cautionary note for Cal:

I heard several people today note that Memphis was a big city, ethnically diverse, with an NBA team. I guess NBA players would hang around the Memphis players and take them out on the town. Lexington may be much smaller, but a bigger fishbowl. Cal is gonna be under such scrutiny, he may not be able to get out of line in recruiting like many believe he did.

“This whole Cal to Kentucky thing just opened up a whole can of worms we will be wishing never happened. Trust me on this. We were better off with Cal doing his thing in Memphis, getting whomever he got and staying in Conf-USA. Now he is at Kentucky, has unlimited money, an unlimited mouth and a fan base that is certifiably insane…..And best of all, they won’t shut the hell up for possibly 10 yrs straight. It’s bad enough that we have to deal with Carolina fans, but now we have to deal with another bunch of crazy rednecks who really have been nothing but quiet for the last 5 years. This could actually backfire on UK. People may see this as the final stripping of amateur athletics. If Cal turns UK, a storied and hallowed college basketball cathedral, into a one stop NBA shop, I think people will notice (players, especially), and it may end up hurting UK.

Okay, I give that about a 3% chance of happening, but it’s a chance.

says Brady is willing to give up his scholarship if the team need one.

Link, please?

From now on, if you’re bringing heat like that, link me up, please :D

I got linked to it from somewhere.

And my brain’s slipping so I forgot exactly where. It’ll be on the KC Star’s sports section about all the Calipari crap.

well well well....where were you with this information earlier...

I think that was the widely speculated resolution but never saw it in writing

Boom, baby.

They’ve rumored it for years, so I figured he’d at least be open to it.

by rockchalk on Mar 31, 2009 10:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Just read something about the whole Xavier thing that I forgot about....

remember that he and Orton were on the same AAU team and really don’t like eachother….well guess who just so happens to be committed to Kentucky. One Daniel Orton. If that remains the case it might be tough for Cal to convince Xavier. Question becomes does Orton stick around.

We were in on Orton,

so I would take him as a consolation, as well…:D

by Andy Edwards on Mar 31, 2009 10:34 PM CDT up reply actions

not what we need though

Well guys...got to catch some zzz's

I don’t imagine this rumor mill will be resolved for a little while so I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot in the coming week…I look forward to it and to hearing what everyone has to say!!

just seems to be all the buzz...

and there is a fairly inside source claiming it as well, although now he’s backing off so that’s why all the concern now.

do we know if Memphis will

release him from his LOI?

The Snozberries taste like Snozberries

by labbadabba on Mar 31, 2009 10:46 PM CDT up reply actions

clause in the LOI that get's him out of it...

Memphis has already conceded that he won’t be around, still not officially released but it’s a forgone conclusion

by Owen on Mar 31, 2009 10:48 PM CDT up reply actions

No doubt.

He has a special clause in his LOI that says if Cal leaves, they will let him out. Besides that, there’s a source at JS that has a Memphis source that said earlier X to KU was very likely, but like Denver said, he is backing off that a bit now, but still says he thinks X to KU will happen.

this poster has been dead on too...

BTW

I got screwed on the auto-drafting in the RCT fantasy baseball league….the damn computer drafted me like 8 RP….Nathan, Rivera, Lidge, Velverde, Capps, B.J Ryan, someone else…it’s rediculous….I’m going to be the waiver wire king.

If anyone needs a closer I will definitely trade

by I need more Esteban on Mar 31, 2009 10:48 PM CDT reply actions

HAHAHAHAHA

We laughed the WHOL time at that. You have 7 closers, hahaha.

by Andy Edwards on Mar 31, 2009 10:49 PM CDT up reply actions

damn you!!!

why did it happen, though? Was I the only one who had auto-draft?

by I need more Esteban on Mar 31, 2009 10:50 PM CDT up reply actions

and honestly

for the most part, my team is pretty crappy, the auto-draft was not kind to me….guess it’s my own fault

by I need more Esteban on Mar 31, 2009 10:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes, and everytime

your pick came around, a closer was the top guy on the default rankings list, so it took them for you, hahaha.

by Andy Edwards on Mar 31, 2009 10:52 PM CDT up reply actions

hahaha

yahoo would never do such things, most of the time it knows what positions you need….that is pretty funny, though

by I need more Esteban on Mar 31, 2009 10:52 PM CDT up reply actions

I've never played with waiver rules

I’ve always played with just first come, first get when it comes to picking guys up….not trying to be too much of a complainer but early on I’m not liking it….how does it work exactly?

by I need more Esteban on Mar 31, 2009 10:54 PM CDT up reply actions

I think everyone's

a free agent at the moment there should be an waiver restrictions at the moment

by I need more Esteban on Mar 31, 2009 10:57 PM CDT up reply actions

ah the waiver period has kicked in

here’s how it works

The Snozberries taste like Snozberries

by labbadabba on Mar 31, 2009 11:00 PM CDT up reply actions

you can lay claim to a player however

every person in the waiver line ahead of you gets first crack at the players. If they don’t nab them then you may put the player on your roster.

The waiver order is determined by league standings. that’s how it works in football at least…

Wah wah wah.

Haha, jk. Waiver rules are standard.

Ahhh, there’s a page on the internet somewhere where you can find out how it works. My fingers are burnt out so much from all the posting to day to explain or even link you.

by Andy Edwards on Mar 31, 2009 10:55 PM CDT up reply actions

well your reign as commissioner is already under review by the board

just so you know…..is anyone else’s computer going really slow with this thread?

by I need more Esteban on Mar 31, 2009 10:56 PM CDT up reply actions

yes - that's what happens when there 600 posts on a thread

that’s why God invented overflow threads. But something tells me, the mods aren’t making an overflow thread for this one…

by Andy Edwards on Mar 31, 2009 10:59 PM CDT up reply actions

on that note, I’m out….I’m sure tomorrow will bring much more news…..holla!

it's pretty sweet...

I guess you probably haven’t noticed if you haven’t commented in a while…it makes open threads really nice.
