Well...I've gone from confident to pessimistic on this one now. Maybe it means nothing but I'm going to go ahead and look at 09'-10' without including Stephenson.

After reading that SI article...

…I’m thinking it may not be such a bad thing if we don’t get him.

Remember a fuy named Brandon Rush?

Same things were said about him. He turned out alright, didn’t he? Coach Self wouldn’t be on the cusp of signing him if he thought he would be a problem. And, we are still getting him. So, don’t go counting your chickens already.

hmmmm

Rumor is this is because Xavier is opening up his recruitment – but I don’t think thats the case. I know we invested a lot of time recruiting X, but I doubt Bill Self wants him bad enough to damage his NY recruiting.

Apparently theres an out clause in his LOI

that allows him to get out of it if Calipari is no longer the coach at Memphis

Didn't even occur to me but I think Denver nailed it

Maybe Self is telling Lance to wait until he hears back from the NBA as to where Sherron is going to get drafted…I’m getting the feeling that if sherron stays, Lance will go elsewhere because of our scholarship limit and return of “the man”
I’ll take that anyday. Sherron is proven. Sherron is a leader. Sherron has sacrificed his ass for this team, and he’s my man. I’d rather show people someone who is going to get their jersey retired and play in the NBA than a guy that showed up for a year and scored a bunch of points.
You guys seem to indicate that we can’t get elite recruits. Bullshit. Recruiting services and their rankings are subjective, and each recruit comes down to a unique situation. Its like the NCAA tournament. Coaching or talent can get you to the second weekend, but beyond that its matchups and luck.
All I’m saying is that I’m fine with the fact that people who insist on playing time don’t come here, because it means we’re already stacked. Just remember that.

The questions is

Is Lance > Cole/Sherron returning?

The Snozberries taste like Snozberries

by labbadabba on Mar 31, 2009 8:56 AM CDT reply actions

No for me too...

if both Sherron and Cole come back they’ll play with better consistency in Self’s system than any freshman could.

Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.

by Owen Kemp on Mar 31, 2009 9:06 AM CDT up reply actions

Maybe?

In the near-term, I’d say no. But getting high profile players like Lance, along with keeping the New York pipeline going, are crucial for the long-term success of the program. You can’t win a title without elite talent, and you’ve got to play this game if you want the elite talent- at least until the NBA age minimum goes away.

by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Mar 31, 2009 9:31 AM CDT up reply actions

It's irrelevant.

Those two/three things have no basically nothing to do with each other. Coach Self has a plan. Everybody should stop freaking out, and thinking that one of those two HAS TO leave to take Lance.

by Andy Edwards on Mar 31, 2009 10:59 AM CDT up reply actions

not irrelevant at all...

typically at the end of the season staff will have a sit down with players individually to discuss offseason etc. If Self is sitting there and every guy is absolutely jacked about coming back and competing for a title…then he’s already got to find one scholarship out of thin air…where adding Stephenson means two.

We’ve already had the discussion that we wouldn’t want to think Self would force someone out or ask them to leave and I don’t think he would. Maybe he’s saying to himself, I can push a little and find one but only one.

All this may have nothing to do with one another but it very easily could.

by Owen Kemp on Mar 31, 2009 11:08 AM CDT up reply actions

Sure, it COULD.

But, I seriously doubt that HCBS got this far with Lance, got this close to landing him without having a little knowledge beforehand. Turning away a guy like this after recruiting him so long, and letting him get his heart set on being a Jayhawk would be THE WORST possilbe publicity you could ever have.

by Andy Edwards on Mar 31, 2009 11:12 AM CDT up reply actions

agree...

and like I said above there is no way Bill Self turns Lance away and the only possible reason it could happen is if he didn’t have scholly’s that’s what got the convo going and it was purely a hypothetical. Basically I was speaking to the point that some are wondering if Bill has held of Stephenson to which my point was…no way…this is all Stephenson.

This has Calipari's grease stains all over it.

I hate that guy so much right now. He’s gonna try to get Wall and Stephenson (and maybe even the Henry’s, although I don’t see Memphis letting them go with him without a fight).

by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Mar 31, 2009 9:28 AM CDT reply actions

This just seems as if he's waiting to see

if Sherron & Cole come back. If they do, I imagine he’ll sign eventually. Of course, if Calipari officially goes to UK, it opens up a lot of possibilities. I think John Wall might come into play again, and Xavier Henry also. Henry has already signed with Memphis, so they would have to release him from his scholarship, and I don’t think they would allow him to go to Kentucky, but if he wants out, Kansas would be a real possibility again.

by hunter s. royal on Mar 31, 2009 9:47 AM CDT up reply actions

rivals has reported that Henry...

has some sort of clause in his LOI or something that would release him from Memphis should Calipari leave. Seems like he would be doing that if he intended to follow Cal though moreso than anything.
