Kansas beaten down 3-0 by A&M. Game two Saturday at 2PM

Texas A&M ace Brooks Raley controlled the KU offense last night, going seven innings while only giving up three hits, two walks and striking out tweleve.  By the end of the game KU had struck out 16 times.  Shaeffer Hall pitched well again but a win was not going to be found last night.  Hall's effort was not supported by the usual good defense KU provides.  The Hawks committed three errors yesterday, Nick Faunce (who suddenly seems to have more than his share of problems in the outfield), Tony Thompson (his second error in as many games after not committing an error in his first 19 games,) and Jason Brunanaky.  Brunansky pulled a real Jeckel and Hyde last night.  In the 4th inning he made a jaw-dropping-full-extension-lay-out catch of a Luke Anders drive to center field.  His glove was golden and shiney for all of two innings.  In the 6th he played a Raley drive like he had salt in his eyes and cement on his feet, allowing the A&M pitcher to score on a hit that, if played well, might have been limited to a single.

I do not want to dwell on this game too long.  Hopefully it was just one of those days when a team with a lot of momentum meets an immovable object and grinds to a temporary halt.  Game two is at 2PM.  A&M provides a free video feed of the contest.  KU is providing a free audio webcast - info for these services can be found in the series preview article.  The pitching match up today is pretty rough for KU again.  T.J. Walz, who is very good, will face Alex Wilson, who is very very good.  Hopefully good things will happen and the Hawks will find a way to win.  President George H.W. Bush and Barbara were at last night's game.  Maybe they brought some bad anti-Jayhawk mojo with them.

Yesterday's box score after the jump.  We can use this article as the living room couch to talk about today's contest.

Thank goodness the game is in Texas today

Game start is about 30 minutes from now. I am thankful that the boys are playing down in Texas. Don’t think I could take another 30 degree affair as we experienced with Wichita. Need to get the bats going today against what is more than likely a 1st or 2nd round draft pick this year. I think Raley (yesterday’s starter for aTm) is draft eligible r as well and probably will go very high. Just need to catch a few breaks and we night take this one.

Here in Lawrence it is even hard to walk outside.

My parking lot is covered in frozen sleet and hail. Nasty. The game in Oklahoma was canceled today.

Kansas 2 - A&M 0 (1st)

Great start for KU. Robby Price singles and Buck Afenir drives him in with a double over Raley’s head in LF. Thompson comes up next and doubles to center RF bringing home Afenir.

Kansas 2 - A&M 0 (after 2)

Walz is dealing. He retired the first six Aggies. 4 strikeouts. T.J. often starts out strong and runs into trouble around the 5th or 6th inning. He looks great right now. Heere ran hard into a padded wall in right field foul territory trying to chace down a fly ball. He was fine but he hit the wall and bounce off it.

Kansas 2 - A&M 0 (bot 4)

Thompson singles to right field.
Waters pops out to deep shortstop. 1 out.
Land walks on a full count. Thompson to second.
Faunce goes down hacking. He has struck out a lot since that grand slam in Arizona. 2 outs.
Brunansky strikes out looking.

Kansas lost an opportunty to score in each of the last two innings. In the third Heere hit a two out double and was stranded. Going to the bottom of the fourth. Walz has retired the first nine he faced. 6 K’s.

Kansas 2 - A&M 3 (after 4)

Colligan walked. First A&M base runner.
Raley flies out to LF. Nice catch by Faunce. 1 out.
Shofner singles to LF. Colligan to third. First A&M hit.
L. Anders doubles. Shofner to third. Colligan scores. KU 2-1.
Paterson (PH) grounds to short. G6-3. Shofner holds at third. 2 outs.
Gonzalez singles to LCF. Shofner and Anders score. 2 RBIs. A&M takes a 3-2 lead.
Greene singles past Land at first. Gonzalez to third. Price gets Selik up in the bullpen.
With N. Anders at the plate Greene caught stealing. 3 outs.

Walz had a rough inning. Hopefully he can get his equilibrium back and give the Hawks another couple of innings.

Lets’s get some runs Hawks!

Kansas 3 - A&M 4 (bot 6)

Kansas got a bit of luck when Jimmy Waters scored on an E6. In that same inning Land was credited with a single on a ball that was easily catchable. A&M right fielder Thorpe dropped a ball when he lost it in the sun.

Walz still out there.

Crap, while I was typing this Luke Anders hit a solo homerun to right field. Big fly ball.

Walz is pulled.

Cameron Selik coming in.

Walz went 5.1 innings, 6 hits, 4 runs (so far), 2/7 BB/K. Another pretty nice outing for Walz. He is close to breaking that line and becoming damn good. It seems he has trouble the third time through the line-up. I don’t know why yet.

Kansas 3 - A&M 4 (7th inning stretch)

Top of 7th. Thebeau pitching for A&M
Narodowski doubles to deep LCR on the fly.
Price SACs Narodowski to third. 1 out.
Heere walks on full count.
Afner, infield playing back, walks on full count. Bases drunk.
Childress pulls Thebeau. Says nothing to him when he takes the ball. Shane Minks in to pitch.
Thompson hits into a 6-4-3 DP on the first pitch. Inning over. Crap.

First pitch swings

It seems to me that we swing at a lot of first pitches. I would have thought we would have made a sinker baller at least throw a strike before swinging. We also seem to swing at first pitch curveballs. that is a low percentage hit . We would be better off not swinging. Make the pitcher throw it for a strike.

by Kansas28 on Mar 28, 2009 4:07 PM CDT reply actions

It was all set up so perfectly. Thompson is exactly who you would want up in that situation.

KU has had a lot of scoring opportunties this game they have not cashed in.

With two outs and a runner at third in the bottom of the seventh

Price pulls Bochy and goes to Blankenship to pitch to Raley.

Price is really using Blankenship as a LOOGY. First time KU has had this type of depth in their bullpen. Kind of exciting I think.

Blankenship has been so much better than I had expected.

Kansas 3 - A&M 6 (after 7)

Thompson lets a ball get under his glove to allow another run to score. That is Thompson’s third error in the last three games. He had none through 19 games. Glove slump?

Hawks are running out of time for that rally.

We really need to win one of these games at aTm ( keeping the 12th man blog happy). i would really like to go into the Baylor series at 4-2 in the Big 12.

Kansas 4 - A&M 6 (top 8)

Top 8 – Minks pitching for A&M (The officail scorer changed the E5 to a hit. Which it was not.)
Waters doubles to the RF wall.
Land shart single to LF. Waters to 3rd.
Faunce K again. 1 out.
Lytle pinch hits. infield single. RBI. A&M 6-4. Land to second.
Narodowski singles. Bases drunk.

Childress pulls Minks with Price at the plate. He is going to Uriegas. A&M announcer seemed less than thrilled with the choice.

Come on Hawks.

Bases loaded again.

Plate Disciplne

It seems like our plate discipline falls off when we really need it to be sharp. I don’t want to have to say we gave them a good game. I want to say we won. I would be a terrible coach.

by Kansas28 on Mar 28, 2009 4:47 PM CDT reply actions

Price has told me a couple of times,

he likes the team to swing the bat. He says he likes good physical batters. Which is odd in a way, considering how many bunts he also calls.

A&M gives more charity.

With runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out Nick Anders misses a sucide squeeze bunt and the Afenir tags the runner out coming from third. Anders K’s next pitch.

Tie game. I would be insanely angry at that call if I were an A&M fan.
