Hola, hombres!

Rough night last night. But, my Big 10 theory proved to be true… On the ONE Big 10 team that I DIDN’T pick! Hahaha, of course! Damn Wiscy… But, I did call the Cleveland State upset, in both my bracket and Warden’s Challenge.

"I log on to RCT after school, and I see the 228 comments on this thread. I actually immediately panicked, because knowing KC, I figured some other fan from another school (most likely Mizzou) came over and said something stupid. Then, KC freaked out at him, and said something stupid (no offense, KC, but this really wouldn’t be that extraordinary for you to pull off) and then there was mass hysteria. I would have to ban people, and warn people, and it’d be mass chaos." - SlowDance

See

I picked my brackets and left them alone, but was TOTALLY pissed when the tourney started because I knew certain games were going to go a certain way. UCLA over VCU, Wisconsin winning, and Dayton over WVU were the three games I KNEW were going to go the way they did, and I picked them all wrong in my brackets. Damnit.

Great slate of games for today.

Outside of last night, the first two rounds were kind of blah. Looking forward to a great weekend of hoops.

If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.

by Warden11 on Mar 21, 2009 12:18 PM CDT reply actions

See

I disagree that they were blah. I thought there were some excellent games, but because the upsets weren’t happening left and right, there was a void or something. Not every game is going to be like that Siena-OSU game, but it was still a damn fun weekend.

I am Jack's unbridled optimism.

by A.J. Haefele on Mar 21, 2009 12:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Kinda-sorta.

I thought it was a lot of fun, with some really good games on Thursday and Friday.

It wasn’t one of the best, but there were plenty of close calls that were fun to watch. Even when it peters out in the end, it is still fun to watch CS-Northridge give Memphis a run for their money. Or ETSU make Jamie Dixon look as if he had just seen a ghost.

But yes, hopefully this weekend is better.

SlowDance-

Any way to temporarily change the name of the site to “Hoops Central” or something like that? Seems nonw of us are capable of watching a damn game without being here, talking about it. You’ve got the best blog on the Triple Dub.

Seriously, you do. This place is amazing.

I agree.

This place is one of the only team/college specific sites on SBNation that morphs into a general “let’s hang out and shoot the shit” blog when our team isn’t playing. It’s definitely turned into my favorite place to be during hoops.

Correct.

Speaking of which…. I still need to get email addresses from Slam and 4 ships, otherwise the league isn’t gonna be full, and we are gonna have to postpone. There is no way to change the number of teams after it’s been created. Plus, 8 team leagues are too easy to get a stacked team.

Rollie Massimino sighting.

He had a strange mid-life crisis. He was your absolute, dyed in the wool, supposed lifer coach at Nova after winning the national title against Georgetown: Then took off and coached at UNLV.

Yea, I checked his wiki page real quick.

He was famous for his “family style” of coaching; Then got run from UNLV for concealing how much money from taxpayers contributed to his salary. He had some great teams at Nova though.

This is for Denver and Funk, from Deadspin's "Waxing Off"
Elway’s Bitch has a message for Josh McDaniels: “Next time you want to perpetrate some sort of sneaky, wormy trade that makes absolutely no sense to anybody except maybe some naked, shivering Bellevue patient picking imaginary jelly beans off his scrotum during shower time, why don’t you make sure the trade actually happens? You’re an asshole.”

you really think he would have....

I think Shannahan was maybe arrogant enough to think that he had the next “Terrel Davis” in either Hillis or Torain. I don’t mean arrogant in a horrible way but the guy did seem to believe he could plug anyone back there and I can’t imagine he wouldn’t have used that first round on defense…at that point I think even the fans around here would have started to wonder what he was thinking.

But they needed to be 2's to play there:

That’s what everybody says. Of course #3 Villanova just got to play in Philly.
Seem’s to be NCAA arrogance & obliviousness to wasting money in a recession. Story in the KC Star today about the NCAA spending 100 grand to put a new floor in the Sprint center so they control all the logos on the court. They plan to do it at 13 sites next year. The Star story also notes they have a whole team of people that roam downtown KC checking for copyright violations. It’s supposed to be an economic boost to have the sub-regional in the Sprint Center, but the NCAA doesn’t seem to help out much.
Memphis has apparently brought a pretty good crowd, but Oklahoma is terrible about supporting their b-ball team.
As a KU fan, I would have had to grit my teeth, but putting MU in KC would have really energized the event. Throw them a bone for having a great year. No guarantees they’ll be back soon.

I've seen them plenty (seriously, I watched the Pac 10 all of the time)

and they are really good. Isaiah Thomas isn’t quite as good (yet) as Nate Robinson, but they play the same up-and-down style as the 05 and 06 teams, the latter of which was a 1-seed. I like them, but I love Purdue. Both are Top 16 teams in the country, though, IMO.

They lose a lot, and should struggle next year, but the year after that, when they reload and their young players develop, they should be really awesome again.

by rockchalk on Mar 21, 2009 8:11 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not joking.

Several of my money picks(Purdue,USC) have been from your recs. Plus, the site itself has really made me concentrate more on teams out of the Big 12. Also, the RCT challenge was the first one I entered, and led to me making out a half dozen other brackets.

best of luck in the draft,

I’m sure nobody will still be bitching about draft order.

If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.

by Warden11 on Mar 21, 2009 8:06 PM CDT up reply actions

are you one of the new guys?

Or were you in it last year?

If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.

by Warden11 on Mar 21, 2009 8:34 PM CDT up reply actions

One of the new guys.

My team sucks, so far.

I haven’t spent a moment thinking about baseball since September, really.

Well, that’s not true. I’ll visit RR about once a week, just to see who we signed, and stuff. That’s about it, though.

by rockchalk on Mar 21, 2009 8:39 PM CDT up reply actions

In other news.

Western Kentucky whipping up on Gonzaga. I’m super pissed I didn’t take them in Warden’s challenge. Of course, I have Gonzaga making the Final Four, so that would pretty much destroy my bracket.

by rockchalk on Mar 21, 2009 7:51 PM CDT reply actions

whipping up?

I see 25-25.

If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.

by Warden11 on Mar 21, 2009 7:55 PM CDT up reply actions

It was 23-18 at time of posting.

Not exactly “whipping up”, but very surprising for me to see, at least.

by rockchalk on Mar 21, 2009 8:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Texas

is going to heat up and take this game over.

If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.

by Warden11 on Mar 21, 2009 8:34 PM CDT reply actions

I sure hope so.

Geez, that would just be absolutely fantastic.

I agree, too.

by rockchalk on Mar 21, 2009 8:39 PM CDT up reply actions

I hope:

But they’re incredibly half-assed in their fundamentals. They make a nice play, then lollygag it down the court and hack somebody, or just fling a one-armed pass in the general direction of a teammate. Maddening team to cheer for.

by hunter s. royal on Mar 21, 2009 8:40 PM CDT up reply actions

I kinda like it.

It adds to the excitement.

And I’m only half joking, too.

by rockchalk on Mar 21, 2009 8:41 PM CDT up reply actions

They're exciting alright.

Lot’s of big time talent, but big time egos to match. Barnes probably need plenty of xanax to get through the year.

by hunter s. royal on Mar 21, 2009 8:43 PM CDT up reply actions

maybe

that’s why he only watches games instead of coaching during them.

If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.

Texas is a damn good team, folks.

I almost took them all the way to the Elite Eight, but couldn’t quite bump them past Villanova.

Almost, though.

by rockchalk on Mar 21, 2009 8:40 PM CDT reply actions

I so want to cheer my heart out for Western Kentucky.

I just can’t quite do it.

My bracket entirely hinges on Gonzaga making the Final Four.

If they do win, though, go Hilltoppers all of the way.

by rockchalk on Mar 21, 2009 8:52 PM CDT reply actions

Ya never know.

We got Siena over the top last night, and they looked buried a dozen times.

by hunter s. royal on Mar 21, 2009 8:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Boom.

That was huge.

A patented Duke charge right there, and Duke gets all of the momentum back.

But now, with the and-one, it’s down to 3 and entirely manageable.

by rockchalk on Mar 21, 2009 9:16 PM CDT reply actions

Wow?

Where are you two?

Duke-Texas is all tied up.

Western Kentucky has scored 7 straight to get it to 79-81, and WKU has the ball with 24 seconds left.

by rockchalk on Mar 21, 2009 9:25 PM CDT reply actions

Ohmygoodness.

Easily the game of the day.

We’ve got the two best games of the day, by far.

Hopefully, the trend continues tomorrow, with the favorites blowing out in the morning.

by rockchalk on Mar 21, 2009 9:28 PM CDT reply actions

Nice ref.

Charge into the face of a Texas guy and taunt him with the foul call.

by hunter s. royal on Mar 21, 2009 9:29 PM CDT reply actions

How did that not go in?

I’m super-duper-uber pissed, so I can only imagine what Texas fans are feeling like.

by rockchalk on Mar 21, 2009 9:29 PM CDT reply actions

I needed Texas to win.

Come on.

I am Jack's unbridled optimism.

by A.J. Haefele on Mar 21, 2009 9:30 PM CDT reply actions

So did I.

This is complete bullshit.

All of the refs are teaming up to screw Texas.

by rockchalk on Mar 21, 2009 9:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Is Bob Stoops around somewhere?

Passing out hundred dollar bills to the refs?

by hunter s. royal on Mar 21, 2009 9:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Texas, you are just too dumb to win.

Unnecessary foul, then you can’t block out on a missed free throw.

by hunter s. royal on Mar 21, 2009 9:35 PM CDT reply actions

Story of their season.

Rick Barnes!

I am Jack's unbridled optimism.

by A.J. Haefele on Mar 21, 2009 9:36 PM CDT up reply actions

He is the worst in-game coach

I have ever seen. The man is a debacle. If he wasn’t at Texas with the draw of UT and the Longhorns and all that money in the athletic department, he would not be making it as a head coach. He would be an assistant sitting on someone’s bench wondering why the head coach is doing all this “talking” to his players during the game.

I am Jack's unbridled optimism.

by A.J. Haefele on Mar 21, 2009 9:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Shut up.

It’s way more fun if you can just mindlessly blame the refs.

WAAAY more fun.

BON's Game Thread

Got 928 comments, not including postgame.

We’ve gotta beat that tomorrow. Even if it is way early in the morning.

by rockchalk on Mar 21, 2009 9:45 PM CDT reply actions

We probably won't lol.

We only had 600 some odd comments for the NDSU game.

I am Jack's unbridled optimism.

by A.J. Haefele on Mar 21, 2009 9:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe if rockchalk puts the thread up now:

And we can spend the next 15 hours discussing Mr. Barnes coaching acumen……… That would give us a nice start.

by hunter s. royal on Mar 21, 2009 9:51 PM CDT up reply actions

This is a great point.

I would immediately inundate that thread with hilarious motivational pictures.

I am Jack's unbridled optimism.

by A.J. Haefele on Mar 21, 2009 9:55 PM CDT up reply actions

We got 600, it seemed like less.

And yikes, I still need to do those Roll Calls.

I’ll have to do those at some point…sigh.

by rockchalk on Mar 21, 2009 9:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe during the week

when we’re busy basking in the glow of a successful trip to the Sweet 16 and there aren’t any games going on.

I am Jack's unbridled optimism.

by A.J. Haefele on Mar 21, 2009 10:03 PM CDT up reply actions

900?

That’s do-able. I’ll be extra chatty to keep it up.

If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.
