NCAA Tournament: Day One - Afternoon Session

Finally!

It's here!

The NCAA Tournament is kicking off, at long last, this morning. In only a little over an hour, actually. I'm so pumped. Really, it's probably a good thing that Kansas doesn't play today. That way we can coax ourselves into March Madness, getting all excited and pumped up and stuff, before going all nervous and praying that we can just get by North Dakota State.

So, that's where we are. I'll be here all day long (thanks mom and dad!), so come on in and join me.This is your open game thread for the morning session. Post any-and-all comments here. You know the drill by now.

There will be another thread for the night session. Everyone knows where the break is, yes?

Time Slot One

All times are Eastern Standard Time...

(8) LSU vs. (9) Butler (12:20) -- South

(2) Memphis vs. (15) Cal State Northridge (12:25) -- West

Time Slot Two

All times are Eastern Standard Time...

(1) North Carolina vs. (16) Radford (2:50) -- South

(7) California vs. (10) Maryland (2:55) -- West

(1) Connecticut vs. (16) Chattanooga (3:00) -- West

Whistle go woooo

Just to let you guys know, my bracket pool picks are the ones I made without any thought given to it and immediately after the brackets were put up. I just wanted to throw that disclaimer out there so when I finish in last, I can point to this comment.

Oh my GOD I’m pumped for basketball. Ain’t nothin’ like a little March Madness to put some pep in yo step.

I am Jack's unbridled optimism.

by A.J. Haefele on Mar 19, 2009 9:49 AM CDT reply actions

My picks always end up like that...

even if I wait a few days…I fill that thing out in about 2 minutes and go with my gut…and what I want to happen a little bit.

Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.

Yeah

I think everyone is trying so hard to find the sleepers that they over-analyze shit to death. Like KU losing to NDSU. I seriously hope SFA stuns Syracuse, just to shut people up.

I am Jack's unbridled optimism.

by A.J. Haefele on Mar 19, 2009 9:54 AM CDT up reply actions

Agreed.

With three and-a-half days between when the brackets come out and when the actual games start, and nothing else to do, people just stare-and-stare-and-stare at them and say random things.

Over-analyzation always kills me, and I did it again this year. Ah, well.

It finally got to me,

treating you?

by Warden11 on Mar 19, 2009 9:59 AM CDT up reply actions

Ah man.

It’s awesome, awesome stuff. I’m exhausted, though, so I’m probably just going to cut half the trip and finish it in April. Lack of worry about when I’m driving where next means I can just cut loose the next few days.

I am Jack's unbridled optimism.

by A.J. Haefele on Mar 19, 2009 10:01 AM CDT up reply actions

Don't want to ruin a good trip

by worrying.

Did you ever make it through Kansas?

If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.

by Warden11 on Mar 19, 2009 10:03 AM CDT up reply actions

Naaah.

I wanted to wait to go through Kansas. I did hit up Memphis for some parties, but I was surprised at how weak they were. A good time, but I guess I was expecting something better, so I came back to Knoxville. The friends place I’m staying at happens to be right next door to UT’s new RBs coach Eddie Gran. Pretty interesting guy. He just moved in yesterday and felt the need to tell us his life story.

This is why you always watch the 1/16s, 2/15s at first...

until it becomes a blowout.

Because when you’re watching it, even a game like this where Northridge is losing, you feel like something special could happen.

8/9 games bore me beyond belief, usually. No underdog to root your ass off for.

Big West

Doesn’t seem like a 15 seed level conference. They’ve got legitimate size, athleticism, and skill on the perimeter. Seem to do a good job recruiting internationally. I remember seeing Pacific in person a couple times at the tournament, and they always were really competitive.

by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Mar 19, 2009 12:50 PM CDT reply actions

This year was a down year, top-end wise.

The Big West had like 5 legitimate NCAA contenders, and they all beat each other up. So, all of their resumes look much worse.

But you’re right, there are some really solid teams out here. Long Beach State, Pacific, CS-Northridge and UC-Riverside (led by Jimmy Woolridge, BTW, K-State’s old coach) are all solid.

by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Mar 19, 2009 12:57 PM CDT reply actions

Yes.

Without a doubt.

Those two threes pretty much clinched the BELIEVE stage.

by rockchalk on Mar 19, 2009 12:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Wow.

Northridge is getting wide open layups every time down because Memphis isn’t hustling.

Yeah, Memphis is definitely getting destroyed sometime soon, even if it isn’t today.

They can’t do anything against a zone, because they can’t hit shots, and they don’t hustle back on D.

Keep it close

until the 5 minute mark, and then the nerves should kick in.

by A.J. Haefele on Mar 19, 2009 1:00 PM CDT reply actions

I'm baffled.

All of a sudden, Northridge can’t miss from three.

If it wasn’t for Sallie’s 26 points (previous career high was 13), this game might just be over right now.

Dayumm.

by rockchalk on Mar 19, 2009 1:01 PM CDT reply actions

i don't understand this lack of D by the Tigers

i thought defense was supposed to be their calling card

by Danny Satan on Mar 19, 2009 1:02 PM CDT up reply actions

It is.

Both statistically (best D by far this year) and by the eye-test (best D by far, IMO, this year).

And yet, today, they are giving up open shot after open shot to Northridge.

It has to be a motivation-type thing, where they just weren’t “up” for CSN, the 15-seed.

I’d imagine they’ll start to play harder now that they legitimately might lose, but man.

Agreed entirely.

I have them winning it all, but it would been WAY more awesome if Northridge could have won.

Still, they kept it close long enough to get mentioned plenty on ESPN later tonight. Which has to be good for recruiting purposes and things.

Yep.

Meaning I was basically 0-3 here in the early-going.

by A.J. Haefele on Mar 19, 2009 1:32 PM CDT up reply actions

He can hit.

Baseballs and parked cars.

He can’t go on being a catcher at the next level. And I doubt he can play outfield. So he will have to be a first basemen.

As far as college goes, he might be all-conference this year. So yes, he is the real deal at the plate.

www.rockchalktalk.com for pretty good KU baseball coverage

by James Quinn on Mar 19, 2009 1:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Do you see him

making the transition to first base successfully? I don’t really follow baseball prospects until after they’re drafted. When is he eligible?

I am Jack's unbridled optimism.

by A.J. Haefele on Mar 19, 2009 1:36 PM CDT up reply actions

I've never seen him play anywhere but catcher,

so I really don’t know if he can play first or outfield.

He was draft eligable last year and was passed over. Although that could be for a lot of reasons so I shouldn’t speculate.

His OPS over the last thee years
Freshman .738
Sophomore .858
Junior .817

Those number would make him a good prospect if he could stick at catcher. I kinda doubt he can do that. We’ll see. He has worked hard the last two years improving his throwing and defense. Maybe he can pull it off.

I'm opposite on the Big 10.

Sure, their games suck, and are boring to watch. But, that slow, methodical, milk-it style of play, I think lends well to the tournament. You go up against a team that isn’t used to that, and you can really pick ‘em apart. Purdue is looking great already. I have them in the Sweet 16. I’m high on Big 10 teams in the tourney, but totally anti Big 10 vs. Big 10 in conference play.

I love how predictable Roy Williams teams are

Come into the tournament as a favorite. Blow the crap out of an overmatched 16 seed. Immediately become the Greatest Team Ever. Suddenly face actual competition in round 2, and squeak out a win. Sometime in the next couple of rounds, face a team that plays defense and doesn’t beat itself on offense, and presto! Roy ends up in tears in the locker room.

Rinse, wash, repeat.

[Comment From KCsince88]
If Trey Hillman actually gives Mike Jacobs a chance against LHP this year, he can actually do something, right? I mean, he only has 300-some AB’s against LHP in his career. They should stop assuming just because he is a lefty bopper.

I agree that it does take some time to establish whether a guy can hit lefties or not. Not sure how he did in the minors offhand. But really they gotta get that guy away from 1B, he is a butcher. Or at least was last year.

Yeah, I thought that was pretty funny.

I tend to agree about Jacobs playing 1B. I’d rather see 22 year old Billy Butler play 1B, and work on it in game situations all year, than the older Jacobs, who is really the PERFECT AL DH guy.

not as sad as it would be to see memphis potentially playing utah state to get to the elite 8

i personally have marquette losing to missouri, but if missouri gets upset… and a LOT of people are picking ’quette to get upset… then that would basically mean memphis would end up having the easiest 3-game stretch in the history of the tournament

I agree.

I just hate all of that talk by saying “easy paths”.

Bottom line is that everyone has to win 6 games in a row. Sure, some regions are easier than others. Sometimes a helluva lot easier.

But the best team nearly always wins.

If Memphis wins it all, they will have deserved it. Even if they narrowly edge Utah State in the Sweet 16 and Mississippi State in the Elite Eight and USC in the Final Four.

i think the path the team took to get it done is important for the historical perspective aspect of it

i mean as the years go on people always seem to compare teams from different era’s… and even though is Memphis wins it all with an easy road, and yea they will have deserved it, but people will inevitably look back on them as “weak” champions

Not bad against

a radford team that had lost 8 out of 9 games at one point in the season. Its one thing to have small conference teams in the touney, its quite another to have BAD conference teams. I think all these podunk schools should have to battle it out for the right to the 14-16 seeds.
