Selection Sunday: Open Game Thread

Here. We. Go.

The mission for a 3-seed will be determined a success or failure in about an hour. But, more imporantly, we get to see our matchup, our half of the bracket, all of the good stuff.

But that's just the beginning. Then comes the speculation and the arguments and the predictions and the analysis and, most importantly, the fun.

Because once the names drop on CBS, the fun starts. Here comes the most exciting three weeks of the year, no questions asked.

This is the best day of the year.

Oh, and let's see how accurate my bracket projection is, eh?

Come and talk about everything. Talk about Kansas' matchup, talk about Kansas' seed, talk about the bubblers that got screwed, talk about the teams that didn't deserve a bid, talk about whatever.

I'll be here.

Woohoo!

Just like the bracket pick ’em!

I'm still holding out hope for a 2 seed

Miracles do happen, damn it! The dream is not quite dead yet!

by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Mar 15, 2009 4:02 PM CDT reply actions

Honestly, I'm scared we get a 4-seed.

I think it is entirely possible, and would suck sooo much.

As long as we get a 3-seed, I’m good. Not a huge difference between a 2 and a 3, and as long as we avoid the 4-seed I’m fine.

Us with a 4

Damnit

I love this time of year so much, but I never get anything done as long as KU is still in it

by I need more Esteban on Mar 15, 2009 4:02 PM CDT reply actions

Not if we can get a good discussion going.

Here’s a thought- how has past seeding effected KU’s performance in the tournament, in your opinion?

I’ll give a good example- The Bradley game. While everyone remembers the embarassment of that game, people tend to forget that a LOT of people felt KU was screwed with its seeding that year. I believe they were a five seed (could be wrong), when a lot of “experts” thought they could be as high as a 3.

Maybe playing an easier team in round 1 lets that team get comfortable, and they make a nice run. Hard to say for sure, but this shit definitely matters.

by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Mar 15, 2009 4:05 PM CDT up reply actions

We were a 4-seed.

But yeah, we probably should have gotten a 3-seed.

Hopefully the same thing doesn’t happen this time around.

by rockchalk on Mar 15, 2009 4:06 PM CDT up reply actions

no they were a 4 I believe

and I remember that looking back, Bradley was seeded way too low, that’s how I felt we got screwed

by I need more Esteban on Mar 15, 2009 4:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed.

That was a good team.

In other news, this Big 10 game is going to end soon.

Like, 40 minutes before the Selection Show.

That’ll be interesting, to hear Greg Anthony and Seth Davis talk for hours and hours and hours. Or just 40 minutes.

I actually immediately panicked, because knowing KC, I figured some other fan from another school (most likely Mizzou) came over and said something stupid. Then, KC freaked out at him, and said something stupid (no offense, KC, but this really wouldn’t be that extraordinary for you to pull off) and then there was mass hysteria. Funk around? Or Denver?

Why doesn't Josh McDaniels get more crap for this?

Guy hasn’t done anything yet, but seems to be getting a free pass on all this because Cutler once said he thought his arm was stronger than Elway’s. Honestly, in the history of misdeeds by NFL players, that has to be waaaaaaay down the list.

by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Mar 15, 2009 4:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Anybody that really wants us to go to KC? Or is everyone fine with either Minneapolis or Boise?

by rockchalk on Mar 15, 2009 4:15 PM CDT reply actions

KC would be great,

but I think that ship has sailed. We’d have to be a 2 seed, right?

I just got back from your mom's basement.

by Warden11 on Mar 15, 2009 4:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Is Minneapolis in the dome?

I’d prefer not to play first round in a dome, just cause it can mess with your shooting.

by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Mar 15, 2009 4:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah.

It’s in the Metrodome.

I don’t think we get into KC, either, but I suppose there’s about a 5% possibility.

Essentially, it would require us to pick up the final 2-seed instead of Oklahoma, or just be the highest 3-seed ahead of Missouri and Oklahoma.

I doubt it happens .

by rockchalk on Mar 15, 2009 4:17 PM CDT up reply actions

It will be good practice

for shooting in the dome in Detroit.

by Warden11 on Mar 15, 2009 4:17 PM CDT up reply actions

And as far as 2 seeds go,

right now I think Mizzou should be ahead of us.

I just got back from your mom's basement.

by Warden11 on Mar 15, 2009 4:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed.

I think the Big 12 rankings go Oklahoma-Missouri-Kansas.

So, no way we pick up the final 2-seed. I just hope we get a 3-seed.

by rockchalk on Mar 15, 2009 4:18 PM CDT up reply actions

No way

I would have all kinds of problems with that.

I am Jack's unbridled optimism.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on Mar 15, 2009 4:18 PM CDT up reply actions

They deserve it.

The Committee LOVES the Conference Tournaments in terms of value, and Kansas and OU both lost in the first round while Missouri won the damn thing.

Honestly, I think they SHOULD be ahead of Oklahoma. They aren’t, I don’t think, but they should.

by rockchalk on Mar 15, 2009 4:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Split in regular season

and they won the tournament. Also beat a “full strength” OU team.

They should get some kind of reward for winning the tournament.

I just got back from your mom's basement.

by Warden11 on Mar 15, 2009 4:19 PM CDT up reply actions

As long as we get a 3-seed, I'll be happy.

Well, and no Binghamton, please.

We don’t need the “B” curse. That’d be terrible.

by rockchalk on Mar 15, 2009 4:18 PM CDT reply actions

I bet the committee

intentionally puts us up against a “B” team, just to piss us off, and to see if it happens again.

And for two, the two HBCU conferences (SWAC and MEAC) are BY FAR times a million the two absolute worst conferences in college basketball. Isn’t even close.

They can’t play each other in the Play-In game because of a rule so at least one gets into the 64-team bracket, but both conferences are terrible.

Not really for me.

Missouri beat the teams in front of them (unlike us), but they didn’t look great doing it.

The Hawks, man I don’t know. We knew we could throw up stinkers, but that Baylor game really drove it home.

We are very high-risk-high-reward.

I honestly believe that we really could play awesome for two weeks and make the FInal Four. Definitely, it could happen. Not likely whatsoever, but a possibility for sure.

Of course, we could also pull a Bucknell and lose in the first round.

Neither one would terribly surprise me.

As long as we make the second weekend, I’m good, personally.

I just got back from your mom's basement.

by Warden11 on Mar 15, 2009 6:10 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm with Digger.

Saint Mary’s just isn’t nearly as good without Mills.

I had them in, until Mississippi State won today.

The one that really got jobbed was San Diego State. They had a MUCH better resume, I thought.

How SDSU didn’t get in, I’ll never know.

And how Maryland did, I’ll never know.

by rockchalk on Mar 15, 2009 6:11 PM CDT up reply actions

I think both deserved it.

Whole season, right? That’s why OU is a 2, because of the whole season?

I just got back from your mom's basement.

by Warden11 on Mar 15, 2009 6:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes.

And I agree, both deserved it.

But who would you take out for Saint Mary’s? Arizona? See, I don’t think so at all. Arizona > Saint Mary’s.

Saint Mary’s overall resume isn’t NCAA-worthy. It’s just not. If you JUST isolate the Patty Mills portion then yeah, they are, but he isn’t completely healthy. Thus, the whole season, and thus they get left out.

by rockchalk on Mar 15, 2009 6:17 PM CDT up reply actions

I just got back from your mom's basement.

by Warden11 on Mar 15, 2009 6:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Wisconsin would have been seeded a 11.

According to Slive.

It’s just, to fit it in within the rules and stuff, they had to shuffle Wisconsin down to 12.

by Warden11 on Mar 15, 2009 6:30 PM CDT up reply actions

"Cornell is really good..."

Rock Chalk have you fallen ill? Cornell is 1 – 5 against the RPI TOP 150…moreover, they’re 1 – 2 against RPI 100 – 150! And what is their RPI? 115. They’re almost awful.

by mpfische on Mar 15, 2009 7:51 PM CDT reply actions

hey perchie!

You have to be thrilled with Mizzou’s bracket.

Where the Devil Don't Stay.

by Warden11 on Mar 15, 2009 7:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes and no...

They’re are in the region with two number one seeds….

by mpfische on Mar 15, 2009 7:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Other than that, though, you're set up very nicely.

Marquette as a 6 without Damion James is a joke.

You shouldn’t have any trouble with them.

Assuming y’all don’t choke, you should have a cakewalk to the Sweet 16.

by rockchalk on Mar 15, 2009 8:00 PM CDT up reply actions

All relative, mp.

All relative.

They have major talent.

That’s all I’ll say.

by rockchalk on Mar 15, 2009 7:55 PM CDT up reply actions

But what does that mean?

If they have “major talent” why did they lose five our of six to the RPI 150 and lose two games to the RPI 100 to 150…they might well have finished 12th in the Big 12…

by mpfische on Mar 15, 2009 8:01 PM CDT up reply actions

It's all for a 14-seed.

And, they started off poorly because two of their top three scorers missed the first couple of months due to injury.

Don’t get me wrong, you guys will crush them…probably.

It’s just, they have the talent to shock some people.

by rockchalk on Mar 15, 2009 8:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Hey!

Digger’s giving us some love, saying we get to the Elite Eight.

And damn, Missouri to its first ever Final Four.

Big fan of the Big 12 North, right there.

by rockchalk on Mar 15, 2009 7:57 PM CDT reply actions

On to ESPNU!

For the NIT Selection Show!

I think I’m the only human being without any vested interest in a potential NIT team who watches this every year.

But I do. Damn, do I.

I love it to death, really.

by rockchalk on Mar 15, 2009 8:01 PM CDT reply actions

I'd kill for ESPNU,

almost.

(4) Kansas State vs. (5) Illinois State

That game is hella interesting. Jankvoich against K-State. Osiris versus Clemente.

Will definitely turn on the tube to watch this one.

(3) South Carolina vs. (6) Davidson

Another fascinating one, I think.

Obviously, you have Stephen Curry, but USC was pretty solid. And Devan Downey is incredible.

(2) St. Mary's vs. (7) Washington State

Another wildly interesting one that I really want to see.

Wazzu has Klay Thompson, everyone’s favorite SM Eagle, and then Saint Mary’s has Patty Mills. Should be interesting.

by rockchalk on Mar 15, 2009 8:05 PM CDT reply actions

With how many good teams are left out of the NCAA Tournament

due to the always-increasing parity, these NIT matchups are actually really good.

Lots of really solid teams.

I always watch as many NIT games as possible.

By the way, Warden.

This is what it says on the Yahoo! page:

* Submit your picks before the first game on Thursday, March 19.

You have until Thursday.

thanks,

I didn’t think they had been counted in the past.

(1) Auburn vs. (8) UT-Martin

Lester Hudson is awesome for UT-Martin, and Auburn is on fire right now.

by rockchalk on Mar 15, 2009 8:09 PM CDT reply actions

(4) Tulsa vs. (5) Northwestern

Another interesting one.

Northwestern is good, folks. They deserve an NIT bid.

by rockchalk on Mar 15, 2009 8:10 PM CDT reply actions

N'Western

flirted with the bubble a little bit early on. Right?

Where the Devil Don't Stay.

by Warden11 on Mar 15, 2009 8:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah-huh.

they just lost far too many close ones.

by rockchalk on Mar 15, 2009 8:15 PM CDT up reply actions

(3) Baylor vs. (6) Georgetown

Two incredibly talented teams, both of which were complete failures throughout the regular season.

Definitely will watch this, if it doesn’t conflict with anything else more important.

by rockchalk on Mar 15, 2009 8:11 PM CDT reply actions

Exactly.

Both teams thought they’d be top 6 seeds in the tourney this year.

Where the Devil Don't Stay.

by Warden11 on Mar 15, 2009 8:14 PM CDT up reply actions

(2) Notre Dame vs. (7) UAB

Neither teams ever actually think about defense, but both can score the hell out of the ball.

Might we hit 100?

by rockchalk on Mar 15, 2009 8:16 PM CDT reply actions

(1) Florida vs. (8) Jacksonville

Billy Donovan is not nearly as good of a coach as you might think.

He struck gold with one incredible recruiting class, and hasn’t been able to actually get them back to the NCAA’s, since.

They just aren’t that good.

by rockchalk on Mar 15, 2009 8:20 PM CDT reply actions

Some very nice match-ups there.

Clearly, the NIT doesn’t give a flip about being impartial, they just stick the most intriguing teams together. Like to see this happen in the NCAA’s one year.

by hunter s. royal on Mar 15, 2009 8:21 PM CDT reply actions

Parity is always increasing in NCAA

making the NIT have a lot of really good matchups.

Very interested to watch some of these games, starting on Tuesday.

Should be very fascinating to watch, honestly.
