Selection Sunday: Open Game Thread
Here. We. Go.
The mission for a 3-seed will be determined a success or failure in about an hour. But, more imporantly, we get to see our matchup, our half of the bracket, all of the good stuff.
But that's just the beginning. Then comes the speculation and the arguments and the predictions and the analysis and, most importantly, the fun.
Because once the names drop on CBS, the fun starts. Here comes the most exciting three weeks of the year, no questions asked.
This is the best day of the year.
Oh, and let's see how accurate my bracket projection is, eh?
Come and talk about everything. Talk about Kansas' matchup, talk about Kansas' seed, talk about the bubblers that got screwed, talk about the teams that didn't deserve a bid, talk about whatever.
I'll be here.

I'm still holding out hope for a 2 seed
Miracles do happen, damn it! The dream is not quite dead yet!

Honestly, I'm scared we get a 4-seed.
I think it is entirely possible, and would suck sooo much.
As long as we get a 3-seed, I’m good. Not a huge difference between a 2 and a 3, and as long as we avoid the 4-seed I’m fine.
Us with a 4
in a bracket with Memphis as a #1, setting up last year’s rematch?
I just got back from your mom's basement.
Damnit
I love this time of year so much, but I never get anything done as long as KU is still in it
by I need more Esteban on Mar 15, 2009 4:02 PM CDT reply actions
Not if we can get a good discussion going.
Here’s a thought- how has past seeding effected KU’s performance in the tournament, in your opinion?
I’ll give a good example- The Bradley game. While everyone remembers the embarassment of that game, people tend to forget that a LOT of people felt KU was screwed with its seeding that year. I believe they were a five seed (could be wrong), when a lot of “experts” thought they could be as high as a 3.
Maybe playing an easier team in round 1 lets that team get comfortable, and they make a nice run. Hard to say for sure, but this shit definitely matters.
by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Mar 15, 2009 4:05 PM CDT up reply actions
We were a 4-seed.
But yeah, we probably should have gotten a 3-seed.
Hopefully the same thing doesn’t happen this time around.
no they were a 4 I believe
and I remember that looking back, Bradley was seeded way too low, that’s how I felt we got screwed

In other news, this Big 10 game is going to end soon.
Like, 40 minutes before the Selection Show.
That’ll be interesting, to hear Greg Anthony and Seth Davis talk for hours and hours and hours. Or just 40 minutes.
Not if it goes to OT....

Seems pretty high scoring
for a Big 10/11 game…. What’s the reason for this? I haven’t been able to watch.

Funk around? Or Denver?

Why doesn't Josh McDaniels get more crap for this?
Guy hasn’t done anything yet, but seems to be getting a free pass on all this because Cutler once said he thought his arm was stronger than Elway’s. Honestly, in the history of misdeeds by NFL players, that has to be waaaaaaay down the list.
by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Mar 15, 2009 4:14 PM CDT up reply actions
Hang around MHR

I'd say it's because it was a fairly small

Anybody care where we get sent?
Anybody that really wants us to go to KC? Or is everyone fine with either Minneapolis or Boise?
KC would be great,
but I think that ship has sailed. We’d have to be a 2 seed, right?
I just got back from your mom's basement.
Is Minneapolis in the dome?
I’d prefer not to play first round in a dome, just cause it can mess with your shooting.
by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Mar 15, 2009 4:16 PM CDT up reply actions
Yeah.
It’s in the Metrodome.
I don’t think we get into KC, either, but I suppose there’s about a 5% possibility.
Essentially, it would require us to pick up the final 2-seed instead of Oklahoma, or just be the highest 3-seed ahead of Missouri and Oklahoma.
I doubt it happens .
It will be good practice
for shooting in the dome in Detroit.
I just got back from your mom's basement.
And as far as 2 seeds go,
right now I think Mizzou should be ahead of us.
I just got back from your mom's basement.
Agreed.
I think the Big 12 rankings go Oklahoma-Missouri-Kansas.
So, no way we pick up the final 2-seed. I just hope we get a 3-seed.
No way
I would have all kinds of problems with that.
I am Jack's unbridled optimism.
by SlamDunkTheFunk on Mar 15, 2009 4:18 PM CDT up reply actions
They deserve it.
The Committee LOVES the Conference Tournaments in terms of value, and Kansas and OU both lost in the first round while Missouri won the damn thing.
Honestly, I think they SHOULD be ahead of Oklahoma. They aren’t, I don’t think, but they should.
Split in regular season
and they won the tournament. Also beat a “full strength” OU team.
They should get some kind of reward for winning the tournament.
I just got back from your mom's basement.
As long as we get a 3-seed, I'll be happy.
Well, and no Binghamton, please.
We don’t need the “B” curse. That’d be terrible.
I bet the committee
intentionally puts us up against a “B” team, just to piss us off, and to see if it happens again.

Uh, no.
Like I said, they’re not.
And for two, the two HBCU conferences (SWAC and MEAC) are BY FAR times a million the two absolute worst conferences in college basketball. Isn’t even close.
They can’t play each other in the Play-In game because of a rule so at least one gets into the 64-team bracket, but both conferences are terrible.
Who am I thinking of them?

I googled it.
And, according to the government, there is a Morris Brown College in Georgia.
And just a Morris College in South Carolina.
That’s all I found.
You think they'd print up "Bob Morris" shirts for the game?

If we're in KC, and Missouri is there with us (impossible, I know, but just play along)
I’m sure Missouri would have those made up.
Gay.
Even though I think a few KU fans would root, quietly for MU then, they would still piss and moan for us to lose, just because they can’t get over the fact that we are better than them.

Agreed.
So, that’s a reason not to want KC.
My new goal is for a Friday MORNING pick in either Minneapolis or Boise as a 3-seed.
If we get that, and don’t get Binghamton, I’m solid. Oh, and please no West Virginia as the 6-seed, either. That’d be terrible.
That enough demands?
I don't care.
It doesn’t affect us.
They don’t deserve it, but I won’t cry if they get it.
I’m incredibly selfish.
And I just realized that I just said ‘agree’, then said that’s why we don’t want KC. Doh!
I was wrong. But, it doesn’t much matter, as long as we don’t have to play Friday night.
Time to settle in...
all the games are done and we’ve got a half hour to go…I’m feeling 3 seed in Boise right now, but I hope we can pull Minneapolis…with Purdue as our 6 seed…I think

iUCONN should not even be in the discussion for a top seed can't believe this
they’re 4-3 since losing dyson, i can’t wait til they lose their 2nd round game to texas a&m
Memphis didn't do enough to overtake them.
Their non-con wasn’t strong enough to make up for the weak conference.

Doesn't matter what regional.

Partly good, partly bad.
Good that we stayed away from the west, are in Minneapolis (10 minutes away from Cole’s home) and are a 3-seed.
Bad that we have to play terrible West Virginia in the second round, and that’s assuming that we can beat a tough NDSU team that has an outstanding scorer.

"I log on to RCT after school, and I see the 228 comments on this thread. I actually immediately panicked, because knowing KC, I figured some other fan from another school (most likely Mizzou) came over and said something stupid. Then, KC freaked out at him, and said something stupid (no offense, KC, but this really wouldn’t be that extraordinary for you to pull off) and then there was mass hysteria. Sucks for UCLA!!!!
After all of the crap California crap UCLA has gotten for 3 years, they have to play Villanova in Philly.
NO WAY UCLA advances out of that.
UCLA will be toast...head 3 time zones east and play a home game...

I respectfully disagree...
they needed to beat OU or KU again in the tourney to have a real argument for it…I just don’t see it but I do think they may have deserved the midwest over us
Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.
they beat OU
in the regular season. Then, they won the conference tournament. Was it their fault that OU didn’t hold up their end of the equation?

none taken...just my opinion...
3rd in the Big12 regular season just doesn’t earn a 2 in my mind

Agree with Denver.
3rd place & slopping through the tournament beating teams that all had to play extra games is not particularly impressive. I also don’t see why OU was a 2.

Those last 4 teams in are just too similar
to those last 6 out. At that point they might as well pull names out of hat. Personally I am in favor of the Mid-Majors getting the bids because they are at such a disadvantage scheduling wise.

That Saint Mary's isn't nearly
the same team now, because Patty Mills isn’t nearly the same as he was earlier.
oh,
you mean the obvious answer. I thought you meant he had insight.
I just got back from your mom's basement.
I'm with Digger.
Saint Mary’s just isn’t nearly as good without Mills.
I had them in, until Mississippi State won today.
The one that really got jobbed was San Diego State. They had a MUCH better resume, I thought.
How SDSU didn’t get in, I’ll never know.
And how Maryland did, I’ll never know.
I think both deserved it.
Whole season, right? That’s why OU is a 2, because of the whole season?
I just got back from your mom's basement.
Yes.
And I agree, both deserved it.
But who would you take out for Saint Mary’s? Arizona? See, I don’t think so at all. Arizona > Saint Mary’s.
Saint Mary’s overall resume isn’t NCAA-worthy. It’s just not. If you JUST isolate the Patty Mills portion then yeah, they are, but he isn’t completely healthy. Thus, the whole season, and thus they get left out.
OK.
I didn’t analyze them closely enough, but I still think I’d take the Badgers or the Golden Gophers.
That last paragraph is essentially my argument why.
and I haven't looked at those two schools
either. I should before I argue about it, but anytime a Big 10 school is the 12 seed and there a 2 mid-majors at home, something’s fucked.
I just got back from your mom's basement.
Wisconsin would have been seeded a 11.
According to Slive.
It’s just, to fit it in within the rules and stuff, they had to shuffle Wisconsin down to 12.
Why not isolate?
It seems like that’s exactly what they’ve done for OU, but they aren’t willing to do that for St. Mary’s. Why is that fair?

Okay
but citing the 1 that happened in the 1 in a million shot is totally fact sniping.

Haha.
I know.
I forgot to add a “but you’re really right” at the end.
I’m just in an argumentative mood, right now, after watching ESPN for 10 minutes.
It happens.
Watching their stuff always makes me want to argue, too. Fuckers.

Different era - Statistical Anomaly
With the NBA making kids play at least one year in College, the Talent level in the Majors is just to high. Mason was also ranked to low.
i never understood the weight they put onj "key losses"
to me, the only thing that matters is who you can beat, not who you can lose to
"Key Losses"
to me, defines bad losses, basically.
Like, Maryland’s loss to Morgan State is a “key loss” to me.
But Morgan State
made the field. It’s not like losing to UMass or anything.

see but what makes it a "key loss"
like for instance, maryland’s getting blown out by 40 at duke to me is more telling of how bad they are than any loss to a mid-major
I hear
some creatures do it for….actually, I have no idea for the reason. Just that I’ve heard they do it.
I am Jack's unbridled optimism.

you're right, i'm just sayin the fact that they got destroyed like that in a game that they shoulda had circled on their schedule before the season even began...
says a lot about who they can compete with, and to me that says more than the morgan state loss, is all i’m saying
regardless, we can both agree that they suck no matter how you cut it
WTF
Dickie V is making all sorts of sense and representing the mid-majors well.
I just got back from your mom's basement.
Dickie V is a huge Mid Major supporter...and front runner...
the middle ground though get’s nothing from him
Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.
I'm with Bilas, actually.
All teams should be evaluated simply as “teams”, and the small teams shouldn’t get extra credit just for being in a small conference.
I'm not a big fan

nothing, he just said kansas is a very dangerous team in that quad of the bracket
and then went on to say that michigian state has no identity right now
and that's a valid point,
the only problem is that we are a very dangerous team. Also very vulnerable.

"Listen up

something along those lines?
I just got back from your mom's basement.
Boy Washington gets no respect,
Bilas says if the bracket holds to seed you will get UConn and Purdue.
Except that Washington is the 4 seed, not Purdue.
I just got back from your mom's basement.
"Cornell is really good..."
Rock Chalk have you fallen ill? Cornell is 1 – 5 against the RPI TOP 150…moreover, they’re 1 – 2 against RPI 100 – 150! And what is their RPI? 115. They’re almost awful.
Other than that, though, you're set up very nicely.
Marquette as a 6 without Damion James is a joke.
You shouldn’t have any trouble with them.
Assuming y’all don’t choke, you should have a cakewalk to the Sweet 16.
But what does that mean?
If they have “major talent” why did they lose five our of six to the RPI 150 and lose two games to the RPI 100 to 150…they might well have finished 12th in the Big 12…
It's all for a 14-seed.
And, they started off poorly because two of their top three scorers missed the first couple of months due to injury.
Don’t get me wrong, you guys will crush them…probably.
It’s just, they have the talent to shock some people.
Hey!
Digger’s giving us some love, saying we get to the Elite Eight.
And damn, Missouri to its first ever Final Four.
Big fan of the Big 12 North, right there.

On to ESPNU!
For the NIT Selection Show!
I think I’m the only human being without any vested interest in a potential NIT team who watches this every year.
But I do. Damn, do I.
I love it to death, really.

(4) Kansas State vs. (5) Illinois State
That game is hella interesting. Jankvoich against K-State. Osiris versus Clemente.
Will definitely turn on the tube to watch this one.
(3) South Carolina vs. (6) Davidson
Another fascinating one, I think.
Obviously, you have Stephen Curry, but USC was pretty solid. And Devan Downey is incredible.
(2) St. Mary's vs. (7) Washington State
Another wildly interesting one that I really want to see.
Wazzu has Klay Thompson, everyone’s favorite SM Eagle, and then Saint Mary’s has Patty Mills. Should be interesting.
With how many good teams are left out of the NCAA Tournament
due to the always-increasing parity, these NIT matchups are actually really good.
Lots of really solid teams.
I always watch as many NIT games as possible.
By the way, Warden.
This is what it says on the Yahoo! page:
* Submit your picks before the first game on Thursday, March 19.
You have until Thursday.
Obviously not counting the play-in game.

(1) Auburn vs. (8) UT-Martin
Lester Hudson is awesome for UT-Martin, and Auburn is on fire right now.
(4) Tulsa vs. (5) Northwestern
Another interesting one.
Northwestern is good, folks. They deserve an NIT bid.
(3) Baylor vs. (6) Georgetown
Two incredibly talented teams, both of which were complete failures throughout the regular season.
Definitely will watch this, if it doesn’t conflict with anything else more important.
Rupp Arena is hosting state playoffs this week.
Kentucky has to play in a different gym because of it.
Where the Devil Don't Stay.
(2) Notre Dame vs. (7) UAB
Neither teams ever actually think about defense, but both can score the hell out of the ball.
Might we hit 100?
(1) Florida vs. (8) Jacksonville
Billy Donovan is not nearly as good of a coach as you might think.
He struck gold with one incredible recruiting class, and hasn’t been able to actually get them back to the NCAA’s, since.
They just aren’t that good.
Some very nice match-ups there.
Clearly, the NIT doesn’t give a flip about being impartial, they just stick the most intriguing teams together. Like to see this happen in the NCAA’s one year.
by hunter s. royal on Mar 15, 2009 8:21 PM CDT reply actions
Parity is always increasing in NCAA
making the NIT have a lot of really good matchups.
Very interested to watch some of these games, starting on Tuesday.
Should be very fascinating to watch, honestly.
3 Big 12 teams made the NIT.
Further highlighting the separations in the Big this season:
Top 3 (Contenders) —> 2/3 seeds
Next 3 (Sweet 16 Possibilities) —> 7/8/9 seeds
Next 3 (Fringe Bubble, NIT) —> NIT
Next 3 (Suck) —> Eh.
