Championship Week + Big 12 Tournament -- Day 12 + Day 4 -- Open Game Thread

How do you like that title?

This is your all-everything thread for Saturday. The day before Selection Sunday, there should be plenty of action.

It all gets started up at 11 in the morning, EST, with the America East Championship game. It all ends around 2 in the morning of Sunday, EST, with the Big West Championship.

In between, there are nine other Championship Games, including the Big East, Big 12 and Pac 10 Championship Games. Plus, ACC, SEC and Big 10/11 Semifinal action.

I can't wait, I can't wait, I can't wait, I can't wait.

I'll try and be here as early as possible, but just remember that this is all kicking off at 8 in the morning. That's early as hell. But, college basketball is calling, and I'll try my best.

Let's see if, in what will surely be multiple threads, we can't hit 2000.

Too much?

Well...

another day another OGT…I’ll be in and out…headed to the Denver St. Patricks Day parade to get my celebration started. Hold it down for me while I’m gone and only one more day until selection Sunday

Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.

Sounds like a good time.

wait….it’s St. Patty’s day?

I just got back from your mom's basement.

actually Tuesday is....

but the Parade is today and the "Irish’ Pubs opened at 7:30am

hahah i hear ya denV,

i got my parade started a little too early last night so i missed the chi-town parade this afternoon, but luckily by the time i get out to the bars in about an hour, nobody will know the difference

First game is at half.

Memphis already whacking Tulsa, 16-7.

That may get ugly. On another note, why are the Big 12 & Pac 10 having their finals at the same time? That seems incredibly dumb.

TV.

It’s the only slot that fits in for ESPN, and CBS wants to have it in the afternoon so they can still show their primetime shows.

It just works out like that. On Sundays, the ACC and SEC Championships are at the same time. And we were always the same as Big 10/11.

by rockchalk on Mar 14, 2009 11:30 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm alive!

Only one game on, though, to greet my sleepy eyes.

UMBC is the 6-seed, by the way, in the America East. Would be a monstrous upset.

Is anybody actually watching games?

Tulsa has held Memphis down offensively, but they just can’t score. 28 points in 27 minutes will not win outside the Big 10.

by hunter s. royal on Mar 14, 2009 11:58 AM CDT reply actions

What was the point of waking up early, again?

Binghamton just won, so there’s that.

And Memphis is absolutely demolishing Tulsa. So, boo.

The SEC/ACC/Big 10/11 semis need to be the shit, or this morning was a complete waste.

Hey rockchalk.

What happened to our Vegas ad? Too sexy for the site? :D

by hunter s. royal on Mar 14, 2009 12:04 PM CDT reply actions

What Vegas ad?

Honestly, maybe it makes me a terrible site moderator, but I never really look at ads. I always seem to glance over them.

Note to advertisers: I am the only one. Everyone else constantly stares at them, and you should definitely buy spots from me.

by rockchalk on Mar 14, 2009 12:06 PM CDT up reply actions

by rockchalk on Mar 14, 2009 12:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Tulsa still getting wrecked.

If you care about reading on Binghamton, at all, there was an interesting piece in the NY Times about that. Lots of scandal has surrounded the program since moving up from D-3 to their current place in D-1.

I thought it was interesting, at least — Link.

by rockchalk on Mar 14, 2009 12:07 PM CDT reply actions

Sad article.

When your coach is using Allen Iverson as a role model, it’s not a good sign.

by hunter s. royal on Mar 14, 2009 12:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed.

It kind of taints all of this happiness surrounding the program.

by rockchalk on Mar 14, 2009 12:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Halfway through it, but I think this prof needs to wake the F up.
Dear said she stopped teaching numerous times because of their disruptive behavior. When she caught one player text-messaging during class, she recalled, he said he was receiving a message from his coach.

I just got back from your mom's basement.

by Warden11 on Mar 14, 2009 12:45 PM CDT up reply actions

I also question her right to drop the grades. If you make class meaningful, an arbitrary number of 3 wouldn't be needed.
Under Dear’s policy, students are dropped a full grade after three absences. After the players missed three of her classes, Ed Scott, the associate athletic director for student services, questioned her right to drop their grades.

I just got back from your mom's basement.

by Warden11 on Mar 14, 2009 12:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed.

I thought that it was excessive.

Still, the overall point is bigger. The one professor is quite extreme, but that’s what Binghamton has always been proud of. They consider themselves an academic school. So, when players who aren’t eligible at St. Joseph’s are playing for them, it freaks some people out.

by rockchalk on Mar 14, 2009 1:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Also agree with that.

But I wanted to point out the extreme that was used to make their point.

If you go into journalism, don’t go down that route.

I just got back from your mom's basement.

by Warden11 on Mar 14, 2009 1:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Haha.

The guy is usually pretty solid as a writer, though, and the rest of it was pretty good. So I’ll give him a break. But yeah, that professor needs to take a chill pill.

I've now moved on to the SEC Semifinals.

And considering how crappy of a game it is, that is saying something.

by rockchalk on Mar 14, 2009 12:13 PM CDT reply actions

I was watching that too.

Bilas’ “no one had walked on the moon in 1968” line was awesome.

And no, I don’t think anyone likes Digger Phelps.

by rockchalk on Mar 14, 2009 12:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Mississippi State could steal a bid, too.

Just no one is talking about them because they play in the sucky SEC, which is only in line for 2 bids, currently.

Auburn could as well.

So could USC in the Pac 10, and obviously Baylor in the Big 12. Bid-stealing is abound!

by rockchalk on Mar 14, 2009 12:16 PM CDT reply actions

I think only 7.

I don’t think Penn State is in, honestly. Minnesota might not be, either, according to some, but I think they are.

The Nittany Lions really killed their chances with that loss to Iowa. All they had to do was win that and become a lock, but they just couldn’t do it. Ouch.

by rockchalk on Mar 14, 2009 12:19 PM CDT up reply actions

I guess I just haven't been paying attention to them

but 7 teams seems like way too much, I did hear someone say 8 at a bar last night, though and I flipped out so I guess it’s better than that

by I need more Esteban on Mar 14, 2009 12:20 PM CDT up reply actions

7 out of 11 teams?

That seems a lot.(Not disagreeing with you because I haven’t followed the league that much) If they get that many I can hear the crying from K-State already.

by hunter s. royal on Mar 14, 2009 12:22 PM CDT reply actions

but seriously

And aside from Mich. St., it’s hard to name one real contender for me

by I need more Esteban on Mar 14, 2009 12:25 PM CDT up reply actions

They all deserve it, though.

You have the Top 3 that should all be top 5-seeds: Michigan State, Purdue, Illinois.

Then you have a couple of locks that will make it, and deserve to: Wisconsin, Ohio State.

Then it gets interesting. There are three teams left, all with legitimate arguments. Minnesota, Penn State and Michigan. With the general weakness of the bubble, I bet at least two get in. The Nittany Lions look to be the odd man out, and they are one of those potential “Last Team In” candidates that could get really screwed by Baylor winning today, for example.

by rockchalk on Mar 14, 2009 12:27 PM CDT up reply actions

well I'll trust you then

I guess more crappy style basketball for us to beat up on in the tourney

by I need more Esteban on Mar 14, 2009 12:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Depends on what you define as 'real games'.

The Championship Games get kicked off at 5 CDT, with the Big 12 and Pac 10 and A-10.

It’s only Big 10, SEC and ACC semifinals until then.

Random Question for Discussion

What team would you most like to face in the first round (likely 13-16 seed), for any reason?

I’ll go with Cornell. I know a douchebag that went there, and I’d love to absolutely destroy them just to shove it in his pretentious Ivy League a-hole face. Jerk.

by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Mar 14, 2009 12:50 PM CDT reply actions

Andy from The Office?

I’d probably go with Cornell too, you know the Ivey league is probably crap….Besides that, though, CS Northridge is 15-13 on the season so I’ll take them (ironically, Lunardi has us currently slated to play them)

by I need more Esteban on Mar 14, 2009 1:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Cornell is actually really good.

Want no part of them. They return everyone from a team that should have made noise. I’m officially scared.

Looking at the 13-seeds and 14-seeds, I’ll vote American. Not really all that impressed with them. Or Stephen F. Austin (sorry, Slam).

yeah I've heard it

not one I commonly use but definitely heard it….California always has some crazy ass slang, though, I’ve got a friend there that says….“Oh yeah that’s chill”, referring to it being good I believe? That a common one out there rockchalk?

by I need more Esteban on Mar 14, 2009 1:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, I fo rgot about that one.

Yeah, I use that one a lot.

“That’s chill”. Yep. Definitely frequent out here. Dank is stupid, I think, but it’s used so whatever.

The other one is boss. Like, that 6 OT game was so boss, man. Not all that oftenly used, but it gets out there at times.

And of course, ‘beast’. Like, ’he’s a beast’. Simple stuff like that. ‘Cole Aldrich is a beast’. I think that one is nationwide, though, right?

by rockchalk on Mar 14, 2009 1:31 PM CDT up reply actions

oh yeah beast is everywhere

They are only a 5-seed right now, so I think they would have to beat UNC and Duke on consecutive nights to really bump up to a 3-seed.

Tennessee, all of a sudden, is awesome again.

They have to be the weirdest team in the country.

They are a lot like Baylor, actually, just play in a much easier conference, making it easier to stack up enough W’s to become an NCAA team. WEll, that and they are more talented.

by Owen Kemp on Mar 14, 2009 4:33 PM CDT up reply actions

I think they have to beat Duke tomorrow, at least, to jump up on us.

Even then, we might be OK. Maybe not, maybe so.

But that’s part of the reason I’m cheering for Maryland. If FSU just beats the Terps tomorrow, yeah, they probably have a higher probability of winning, but it won’t have nearly the impact. And I bet even an ACC Tournament Championship for the Noles won’t be enough.

It’s all conjecture, though.

by Owen Kemp on Mar 14, 2009 4:38 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't buy it.

Duke losing tonight could help, and I suppose Oklahoma could always drop down to a 2-seed.

I don’t see it happening, though. Maybe if they beat Oklahoma yesterday and/or beat us today, then they’d have an argument. Or even, really, Texas A&M in the quarters. But they played Texas Tech, which added nothing, and a team that was squarely on the bubble a week ago in Oklahoma State. Now, they play an NIT team in Baylor. None of that adds a whole lot to their profile.

by rockchalk on Mar 14, 2009 4:43 PM CDT up reply actions

kind of my thought too...

the fact that everyone is losing I think makes for less possibility of movement. I think Memphis has a shot at a 1 now but other than that I’m just not sure that much can be changed based on the tourney’s as they’ve played out.

a) they would shrink the bubble, probably knocking Arizona out, giving us the longest active streak of tournament appearances.
b) I would root for Nazis if they were playing Missouri.

That is just stupid. Wake has done nothing to deserve that. If they get it, I’ll be super pissed.

Also, Florida State was a 4-seed. If they beat Duke tomorrow, I bet they do sneak ahead of us.

Florida St.‘s RPI is too low to warrant a 3 seed. They committee awards a team’s body of work. A 4th place finish in the ACC just doesn’t get it done.

Right now, I'm just watching games away from my computer.

Flipping as much as I am, I don’t have time to come over here and charm all of you.

USC is cutting it close, Duquesne is making a late run, which are both positive. On the negative side, Missouri is running away.

Perhaps you can train one of your little brothers:

To sit at the computer & relay your messages. I’m sure they all slavishly follow your commands.

Baylor just had two really good

Missed a three, that went in-and-out, then Lace Dunn just missed a layup. He did get his own rebound and got fouled, so it’s all the same in the end, though.

If Baylor can get one more stop, then come back and hit a big shot it’s an entirely different ball game.

And, by the sound of it, I hear A LOT of Baylor fans. A lot of ’em.

They just won't die.

"I log on to RCT after school, and I see the 228 comments on this thread. I actually immediately panicked, because knowing KC, I figured some other fan from another school (most likely Mizzou) came over and said something stupid. Then, KC freaked out at him, and said something stupid (no offense, KC, but this really wouldn’t be that extraordinary for you to pull off) and then there was mass hysteria. I would have to ban people, and warn people, and it’d be mass chaos." - SlowDance

They're trying...

down to 5 w/a chance to cut it to 4….

Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.

Temple-Duqeusne is the current game of choice for me.

It’s the closest to the end, and only a 6-point game.

So it wins.

Then, I’ll go back to constantly flipping between CBS and ESPN.

By the way.

This is Pittsburgh v. Philadelphia.

Just to add an extra little flavor.

Missouri may get sloppy enough to give them one more run.

If they don’t get it quick though, I think their legs are going to die.

by hunter s. royal on Mar 14, 2009 6:41 PM CDT reply actions

I their legs will be fine.

Tomorrow, though, they won’t want to do anything but lie down.

Slipping, and gone.

SWITCH

Temple looks to be pulling away, up 6 with a minute+ left and shooting FT’s.

On to the Big 12, just to see Demarre Carroll hit a back-breaking three.

That will probably do it, folks.

yep...I'm leaning toward pac 10

USc-Arizona State incredibly intense, folks.

If you’re not watching, you should be.

USC down 1, with the ball after a charge, under a minute to go.

I've been watching it for a little while now...

like I said not a big pac 10 fan but this is a good one

Same here.

Why aren’t you a big Pac 10 fan, though?

What’s not to like?

by rockchalk on Mar 14, 2009 7:06 PM CDT up reply actions

What a great play by USC.

It was a 50/50 call as to it was out on, so before the ball landed he jumped to touch it and hit it off of James Harden.

USC ball.

Outstanding call.

by rockchalk on Mar 14, 2009 7:10 PM CDT reply actions

Missouri wins, so one bid won't be stolen.

But if USC can hold on, up 2 with 2.4 seconds left, that bid IS stolen.

Bye bye Creighton? Penn State? Minnesota? St. Mary’s?

by rockchalk on Mar 14, 2009 7:11 PM CDT reply actions

USC wins.

And now, we move into the less exciting Conference Championships.

Mountain West and MEAC are currently at half, MAC started 10 minutes ago on ESPN2.

Big East upcoming at 8 PM, CDT, on ESPN.

by rockchalk on Mar 14, 2009 7:14 PM CDT reply actions

Damn,

Big East final and Syracuse is down 9 with 4 minutes left. I could L’ville winning this by 20 in the end. Cuse just gives up once they realize, it is over.

And damn, where the hell is everybody?

I just got back from your mom's basement.
