Kansas (8-3) vs. Wichita State (6-5)

Under normal circumstances I would have written a preview article for this match-up, but to be honest, given the arctic conditions I did not expect the game to be played.  Even the football team canceled it's open practices today!

Anyway, here is is 5:15PM and it looks like the 6PM game is going to happen.  I cannot say I agree with this decision.  The temperature at first pitch will be around 25 degrees with wind gusts.  That just is not baseball weather.  In the past as many as 2,100 fans have come to Hoglund to watch these two teams.  I would be surprised if 200 show up tonight.  It is a shame to have an important game like this played under these circumstances.

Wichita State is certainly Kansas' biggest non-conference baseball rival.  Wichita State has won the last five meetings, dating back to 2006.  The Shockers are having an off year so the Jayhawks have a good chance to break that streak tonight.

The game can be heard live on KLWN AM 1320.  I'll try to leave updates during the game for those not able to follow it on the radio.  Lee Ridenhour will get the start for KU.

Wow

25? I remember playing in a game where it snowed last year, up in the CA mountains, but not 25 degrees… Sheesh, I feel sorry for the players.

Insanity is just a state of mind.

Tom Hedrick said earlier the wind chill was 23 degrees.

Wichita State did not score in the first inning.

Kansas 2 - Wicithat 0 (bottom 4)

Robby Price hit a solo homerun to right field to put KU up 1-0. Price’s second homerun of the year.

Tony Thompson RBI single with one out. Thompson is on fire at the plate.

Shockers pulling Kelly Flynn with the bases loaded and one out. KU has a chance to pile on here.

KU 2 - Wichita 0 (top 5)

Marasco hit into an inning ending double play to end the KU threat.

With the cold a two run lead might be bigger than it would seem in a more normal game.

Kansas 3 - Wichita 0 (bottom 5)

Ridenour is dealing. He sets the Shockers down in order in the top of the fifth. He has retired 11 straight.

Brunansky leads off bottom of the fifth with a triple.
Robby Price stand up double. His second RBI of the game. Apparently the cold does Robby’s shoulder good.
Nardowsky infield single. He has a single, a double and a walk. Nardowsky went 3-3 yesterday vs. MVC.
Shockers going to the pen again. One out, runners at the corners. Afenir at the plate.

Kansas 7 - Wichita 0 (bottom 6)

Ridenhour’s streak of outs ends at 13 when he hits a batter. He finishes a scoreless sixth. I think this is as deep as Ridenhour has gone in a game so far. Shockers have two hits, no walks, five strikeouts. Great game for Lee.

Lytle and Land single to open the inning. Wichita RF lost Land’s fly ball in the lights. Thank you Allen Field House.
Bruanansky walks. Bases loaded. One out.
Faunce Sac Fly. KU up 5-0. Faunce 8 RBIs on the year.
Robby Price, single. Two more RBI’s, four on the day. Huge day for Robby. KU up 7-0.
Wichita going to thier bullpen again.

Kansas is going to win. This is good.

Kansas 7 - Wichita 0 (after 7)

Ridenhour gave up a lead-off single in the seventh and then retired the next three batters. He has given up three hits tonight. I think he is around 85 pitches.

KU went down in order in the bottom of the inning.

Hopefully, bonfires are allowed tonight.

That is amazing this game is being played. At least KU is having a great result.

Yeah, I almost wish I was there.

I’ve never seen KU beat Wichita State. It would be a nice thing to see.

Faunce doubles in Jimmy Waters. KU 8-0.

Paul Smyth in to pitch the 9th.

Ridenhour’s day, 8 innings, 3 hits, no runs, 1/5 BB/K. Outstanding.

had a reason for wanting to play.

Nice win.

Even if WSU is rebuilding, still a solid win. Good confidence builder, hopefully.

Insanity is just a state of mind.

Wichita State will always be a good team.

I’ve seen them play here in Lawrence over the last three years. Gene Stephenson punched his ticket for the college baseball hall of fame about a decade ago and is still going strong. He has over 1,500 NCAA D-I wins in 28 years, and his overall winning percentage is around 75%. In 1982 his team went 73-14!

I know he is not a much loved figure, but he certainly knows how to coach. His teams are always fundamentally solid. He does not tolerate sloppy pitching or unfocused defense. I’m sure no one wanted to sit next to him on the bus ride home yesterday.

Someone at Rivals.com wrote that this was Stephenson’s first five game losing streak ever. I don’t know if that is true, but just the fact that I think it MIGHT be true speaks to his career.
