Ask the Enemy
Can't get enough analysis of Matt "Grey Goose" Lawrence? Have painful questions about Missouri's shortcomings in its four losses this year? Want to know what Leo Lyons is thinking (OK, only Leo's Planet can actually tell you that)?
In preparation for the biggest Monday a lot of us in the Mizzou basketball world have seen in quite a long time, I've accepted an invitation from the higher ups at Rock Chalk Talk to swing on by and field any Mizzou-related questions you guys have about the upcoming tilt between Mizzou and Kansas.
Fire away.

I'll get this started...
Tell us why this Missouri team has been so successful by your estimation and also is this a result of a couple very strong upperclassmen in Carrol and Lyons or are the pieces in place for a more longterm upward trend? Also if so who are they and why?

It's a cliche, but Anderson finally has "his guys"
It takes a different breed of athlete to succeed in Anderson’s system, a breed of athlete that guys like Marshall Brown and Vaidotus Volkus simply weren’t. And, yes, I just dropped a Volkus reference. The guys Anderson has brought in have athleticism to spare, which is nice to have when your rotation runs 11 deep.
Furthermore, chemistry and morale can be overplayed and overstated in some circumstances, but the atmosphere in the locker room this year is like night and day compared to 2007-08. It shows on the floor.
Carroll and Lyons are obviously the keys that turn the locks, so to speak, and Missouri will have some serious holes in the paint when their eligibility is up. All of the other pieces appear to be in place for an upswing. But, while Anderson has recruited A LOT of athleticism and length in his big guys (Keith Ramsey and Laurence Bowers), they’re still very much an unknown quantity offensively. I have little reservation about the perimeter shooting – freshmen Kim English and Marcus Denmon have added a major presence from outside (Denmon’s streaky lights out shooting has drawn comparisons to Clarence Gilbert). The cogs to run Missouri’s style of defense appears to be in place for the longterm – replacing the offense of Carroll and Lyons should determine Mizzou’s viability in future years.

awesome...thanks
I’ll be the first to admit I haven’t watched as much basketball as normal this year and so I would probably plea a little ignorance regarding a lot of what Mizzou has to offer. I just know that they’re winning basketball games, they can put up points and give other teams fits on the defensive end at times as well so it helps hearing some of the names and thoughts from those that see them more.
Of course now that you’re in the upper echelon in the league I suppose I’ll have to pay better attention

Quite a bit of consternation in that regard
Anderson’s obviously got a lot of ties to the state of Alabama. He was asked about the position when it came open, and while he played the “we’re focused on Mizzou basketball” card, he never really flat out denied anything.
If I had to wager, I’d lean toward his staying, but you won’t see me putting any money on it.

Now, is Alabama doing the "intermin coach" thing...
and filling it after the season I assume? If so that could be interesting, nothing Mizzou couldn’t recover from but coaching changes always involve a certain amount of growing pains.

It would be increasingly frustrating...
… because he’s finally started to get his system established and get his players on campus. Everything’s been building to this season and next season as the true barometer of what he could offer.

And because he finally has guys that
fit his system, I think it would be crazy to leave and have to go through the growing pains again. But if he loves that area, there isn’t a lot that can be done.
I just got back from your mom's basement.
On that note...
how do you replace Carroll next year? Or Lyons, for that matter?
That’s a lot to lose if you’re counting on Ramsey, Bowers and Safford to step in for those guys…

Your guess is as good as mine
I think Missouri could very well be living and dying by the three ball next season. Ramsey, Bowers and Safford are nowhere near polished offensively.

Steve Moore??
He’s a 6’9" freshman. I went to high school with the guy, and played alot of pickup games against him. I like to think that I did alot to toughen him up. I was a year older than him, and we had a gym class together my sophomore year (his freshman year), and he was just think tall lanky kid that didn’t really have much more than a pretty shot from the outside (alot like myself, but I knew that I had hit my ceiling basketball-wise). So, I always took it upon myself to guard him and play rough with him. He got pissed alot, but obviously it worked. He wasn’t quite good enough to get an offer from KU, but had he, he would have accepted in a heartbeat, as he is a lifelong KU fan.

Who do you think poses the biggest problem...
matchup wise for Kansas?

Honestly...
Mizzou’s best asset is that the scoring can come from anywhere. They’ll funnel the offense through Carroll and Lyons early on to try to get them established, but you never really know who is going to go off.
Slow down those two, then all of the sudden looks open up for English from the corner. Overcommit on him and lanes open up for Tiller and Taylor to drive. Seal the lanes, and then Matt Lawrence and Marcus Denmon find openings for three off the bench, if they’re “on” that day (both are incredibly streaky).

Question..
How have Lyons and Carrol matched up against Bigger Post players, (yes this is a question kinda for aldrich), i mean i kind of saw the Mizzou-tex game but not really, i know texas isn’t as tall as aldrich.. and im not sure who all you guys have played, but if you have played someone 6’11/7’0 how did it go?

Mizzou's faced a pretty small schedule in Big 12 play
Offensively, DeMarre and Leo have gotten their points against whomever if they’re on their game. Both have the ability to pull people away from the basket, as the two of them have become semi-automatic from about 15 feet.
Defensively, the two haven’t been bad, but they also haven’t been seriously tested. The one big physical presence I can remember Mizzou facing – UT’s Dexter Pittman – went OFF on Mizzou. Missouri’s matchup zone really keeps balls out of the lane, and passing inside invites Missouri’s hands to start flying and the “organized chaos” to really kick in.
