Around SBN: Jeff Sullivan's MLB Trade Deadline Primer

Alright - let's see your wish list.

Thanks to Denver educating us all... (THANK YOU DENVER!!!!!  BLOGGER OF THE YEAR!!!I!111)  We can all form educated opinions on who we want to see as KU's next coach.

Star-divide

From what I've seen the coaching options appear to be: (in no particular order)

Jim Harbaugh

Tim Brewster

Skip Holtz

Larry Fedora

Kevin Sumlin

Randy Esall

Brian Billick (srsly...)

Turner Gill

Nolan Cromwell

I think that is basically it.  Now we all have our opinions on who we should have and why.  But to come to a consensus as a community we need a weighted poll.  So... Give me your top 5.  Your top pick will earn 5 points and your 2nd pick will earn 4 point so on and so forth.  This way, we may not all agree on who our #1 is on an individual basis but we'll get a clear picture on the man on which we can all somewhat agree.  I will try to tally up the votes on Friday afternoon.

KGRtC, Rivet, be nice.

My Picks -

1) Larry Fedora

2) Skip Holtz

3) Jim Harbaugh

4) Turner Gill

5) Kevin Sumlin

Ranking is kind of difficult

because to me, the difference isn’t clear cut after #1….just throw a dart for #2 through #4, and Edsall because I think he’s due quite a bit of credit for continuing to build UConn into a solid program. New England ain’t exactly a hothouse of football, so he must be doing something right….or something.

1. Harbaugh
2. Sumlin
3. Gill
4. Holtz
5. Edsall

And echoing the above sentiment, big ups to Denver on the candiate in-depths….WAY more than I could find most anywhere else.

by JayhawkTom on Dec 9, 2009 4:38 PM CST reply actions

Here's mine...

1. Harbaugh (I don’t think it’s happening but it’d be damn fun to see)
2. Holtz (I think this is an undervalued pick up)
3. Gill (somebody is going to take a chance on this guy and it might be a huge reward)
4. Fedora or Sumlin (not sure if either of these guys are interested or not)

I’m still planning on looking at one more in Butch Jones I believe. He is reportedly very interested and looking to make a move. Has been successful where he’s at but he’d probably be a low selection on my list.

Here’s the thing in terms of who we hire. In the 90’s we hired a 1AA guy. After that we were forced to go the coordinator route and took a chance on Mangino, he elevated the program.

This time we are going after other head guys. We’ve stepped up but we aren’t exactly the mecca of college football either. To take this team to the next level, we’ll have to likely take a chance on another guy…not as big a chance as in years past but compared to what some of the rumors have been Gill, Fedora, Sumlin and Holtz have their risks.

I’m ok with anybody on that tier and would be happy to move forward with this program from where it stands with one of those guys at the helm.

of course, if Harbaugh does jump out of no where, I’d be ok with that too : )

Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.

by Owen Kemp on Dec 9, 2009 5:15 PM CST reply actions

Eh. What the hell...

1. Skip Holtz (his resumé just looks that good)
2. Turner Gill (obviously knows how to get players motivated but not as much wow factor)
3. Kevin Sumlin (Really, he’s on par with Gill, but I had to rank somebody lower)
4. Jim Harbaugh (seems like a hot head and I don’t think he’d stay around long)
5. Larry Fedora (as someone else has said, he sounds like a damn mercenary)

I don't know, I like to think that things started out initially with good intentions, but then we just loused it up. Kind of like intelligence. We have this glorious thing that allowed us to survive for millenia and now we use it to write porn film plots involving pterodactyls. Talk about wasting the gift.

by tequilaprophet on Dec 9, 2009 6:32 PM CST reply actions

Since Denver did such a great job on the rundowns,

he’s changed mine up a little:
1. Skip Holtz
2. Harbaugh
3. Gill
4. Sumlin
5. Fedora

by hunter s. royal on Dec 9, 2009 6:40 PM CST reply actions

As of now…realistic options:
1. GILL (my #1 in the beginning before rumors let my dreams run wild)
2. Holtz
3. Fedora

Well now that’s not really a dream list so here:
1. Billick
2. Tuberville
3. Harbaugh
4. Fulmer

by jco8394 on Dec 9, 2009 7:31 PM CST reply actions

I also hope to

have a heart attack before Christmas Break this year which would mean we’d have hired Billick…the only way to out do last year’s appendicitis during finals week!!

by jco8394 on Dec 9, 2009 7:34 PM CST up reply actions

Jim Harbaugh x 1000000 and a half.

Oh, I want him really bad. It isn’t going to happen, but whatever. That’s who I want.

I’d also be really happy with a couple of other candidates. Almost all of them, really. Here would be my list:

1) Harbaugh
2) Edsall
3) Gill
4) Fedora
5) Sumlin
6) Brewster
7) Holtz

Really funny quote from Minnesota's AD about this

Can be found at that link. Sounds like he almost wants the guy to leave. Heh.

Also funny

Many people in the comments say things to the effect of, “there’s no WAY he’ll ever get a job as good as Kansas!”

The comments in general are hilarious.

I didn’t realize the problem with Minnesota’s football program was the Vikings were there.

A little rudeness and disrespect can elevate a meaningless interaction to a battle of wills and add drama to an otherwise dull day.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on Dec 10, 2009 1:42 AM CST up reply actions

here we go

Excluding Billick:

1. Harbaugh
2. Holtz
3. Gill
4. Edsall
5. Fedora
6. Sumlin
100. Gary Pinkel
101. Andrew Clark

by DCJayhawk0208 on Dec 10, 2009 7:30 AM CST reply actions

I don’t know, I think I might give Clark the nod over Pinkel…I guess I’d be curious how they’d both interview : )

BELOW Pinkel?

Whats next, you think I’m worse than Bill Callahan. COME ON MAN

by KU Grad 08 on Dec 10, 2009 3:08 PM CST up reply actions

What the hell....

1. Clint Bowen
2. Just kidding.

Who's next?

by Rivethead on Dec 10, 2009 7:41 AM CST reply actions

Ok:

1. Skip Holtz (yesterday I had him 4th! I don’t like the Holtz name and the attention that will bring with it, but the guy’s resume is impressive – and I like the fact he may have a “prove I’m my own man” chip on his shoulder which fits in here at KU just fine.

2. Larry Fedora – I have no problems hiring a mercenary to kill UT, KSU, MU, NU, OU, etc. Big 12 football is a damn war after all.

3. Turner Gill – Somebody needs to give this guy a chance. But the thing is, it’s a chance. A risk. A gamble. Every coach is a gamble, but this one more than the others. And if the KU fan base resorts to calling him “G” like some are starting to on KUSports, I’ll puke. Yes, I know he’s an African American. Yes, I know in the hip-hop culture, African American males call each other “G”. But Jeezus this ain’t hip-hop. It’s football. Sorry….a little OT rant there…..

4. Edsall

Who's next?

by Rivethead on Dec 10, 2009 7:50 AM CST up reply actions

I’ve really tried to stop reading the comments/boards over at KUSports. You seem to be only voice of reason on some of those story threads.

by DCJayhawk0208 on Dec 10, 2009 8:08 AM CST up reply actions

I like these...

and think they are probably the most realistic…although still nothing about Fedora even being interviewed.

by Owen Kemp on Dec 10, 2009 8:27 AM CST up reply actions

My (Wish) Picks

1. Billick
2. Holtz
3. Gill
4. Sumlin
5. Fedora

by play4'ships on Dec 10, 2009 8:27 AM CST reply actions

Is this going to happen?

What the hell? I’m curious when everyone thinks this has to be done by? I would really love to see it finalized by tomorrow. But if not that, then I believe it HAS to be done Monday. The clock is ticking and we are lucky we haven’t lost any recruits yet. C’mon Lew!

by I need more Esteban on Dec 10, 2009 11:38 AM CST reply actions

I'll say by Monday...

just a gut feeling…although I would have said Friday a couple days ago.

btw

great job with the “get to know a coach” series, I haven’t been able to check the site as much recently but I’ve skimmed through a few of them and it’s great work.

Today, on December 10th, who do you think Lew will go with?

by I need more Esteban on Dec 10, 2009 11:52 AM CST up reply actions

If I'm guessing right now...

I’ll say Skip Holtz

Really quiet around here...

…too quiet.

Anybody hearing anything?

by DCJayhawk0208 on Dec 10, 2009 3:17 PM CST reply actions

I think the too quiet sentiments..

could apply to about anything KU football related all the sudden…this thing has pretty much shut down. I think a Notre Dame decision is coming, I’m hoping things heat up and resolve quickly after that.

by Owen Kemp on Dec 10, 2009 3:23 PM CST up reply actions

Yep - haven't seen a thing

other than the Stanford AD confirming that Harbaugh was not in the Notre Dame sweepstakes.

Me likey Skip Holtz

by labbadabba on Dec 10, 2009 3:50 PM CST up reply actions

somebody...

claiming Harbaugh has been offered, given a timeline…if he turns it down it’s Holtz. Still just rumor at this point. I think we’re just going to have to continue speculating and wait this out. I’d be ok with the scenario though.

With the Heisman on Saturday, ...

Harbaugh could be ready to announce on Sunday or Monday.

Oread commenter

An OBK commenter is claiming that we’re going high dollar on Harbaugh, and if he doesn’t take it, Skip Holtz is #2: Harbaugh 1, Holtz 2

thas

what my link says…guy on the Slant has been $$$ with predictions so far…he’s got connections

by jco8394 on Dec 10, 2009 6:54 PM CST up reply actions

not sure he's been all that money on predictions.

he claimed a 4pm presser on 12/3 to announce Mangino’s firing. It didn’t happen.

well, if all the rumors are in agreement

It must be true!

Seriously, though, that is the most logical course of action. I do feel bad for all of the kusports.com commenters who already had Turner Gill plaques made.

I feel a bit bad for Gill if this is what happens. He seems like a genuinely good person who deserves his shot. Some team will be very happy with him.

by DCJayhawk0208 on Dec 10, 2009 8:29 PM CST up reply actions

Dammit

I’d much rather have Holtz before Harbaugh, but maybe that’s just me.

I don't know, I like to think that things started out initially with good intentions, but then we just loused it up. Kind of like intelligence. We have this glorious thing that allowed us to survive for millenia and now we use it to write porn film plots involving pterodactyls. Talk about wasting the gift.

by tequilaprophet on Dec 10, 2009 10:21 PM CST up reply actions

Not just you

Harbaugh is a bigger asshole than Mangino. I predict his temper will create a lot of embarassing moments for KU (even more than Mangino).

And KU is going to do a great job of training a future NFL coordinator or coach with this pick.

Who's next?

by Rivethead on Dec 11, 2009 8:10 AM CST up reply actions

If we manage to propel

Harbaugh to the NFL or even a Top Tier program (ie Michigan) then that means that we’ve probably done well. I don’t see that as a bad thing.

Me likey Skip Holtz

by labbadabba on Dec 11, 2009 8:20 AM CST up reply actions

Maybe the Chiefs will hire him eventually then...

…and he can help make sure the NFL doesn’t have to black out games.

Does Harbaugh

treat players and assistants like crap? Not trying to be an ass or anything I just don’t really know

by jco8394 on Dec 11, 2009 12:19 PM CST up reply actions

Lew, Work your magic

1. Brian Billick (w/ Nolan Cromwell as OC)
2. Jim Harbaugh (w/ Nolan Cromwell as OC)
3. Skip Holtz
4. Turner Gill
5. Larry Fedora

by dagger108 on Dec 10, 2009 8:22 PM CST reply actions

Do not want.

I used to work with an old man that told me- Son, every workplace has a dumbass. If you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.

by Warden11 on Dec 10, 2009 9:17 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah

I don’t know anything about the guy coaching-wise other than he’s McCay’s high school coach…

by jco8394 on Dec 10, 2009 10:18 PM CST up reply actions

Now with Tubberville in the mix

does anyone want to amend their list?

Me likey Skip Holtz

by labbadabba on Dec 11, 2009 10:38 AM CST reply actions

If I felt he was truly someone Lew was serious about...I'd put him at the top...

I don’t think that’s the case.

I’m sticking with my original

1. Harbaugh
2. Holtz
3. Gill
4. Sumlin/Fedora

my prediction on who it will be comes from #‘s 2-4…I’m just not ready to get on the Harbaugh bandwagon.

I'm still waiting for the curveball.

It would not surprise me in the least if Lew hires someone who’s name has never even graced Rock Chalk Talk.

well then I’ll just keep writing up profiles so I cover all my bases : )
