RCT League Setup

Ok, so I have a few suggestions for the RCT fantasy league moving forward. I’m interested to see what people think.

Star-divide

1) 2 Keepers – As I explained briefly in a response to KU Grad 08s thoughts on not wanting keepers, the 1st and 36th picks should be of roughly equal value as the 18th and 19th. In general, I think keepers are a must. If your team is not playoff bound, it gives you something to work on. You can try to position yourself better for next year. Think of it as the Royals’ Rule. Personally, I have already made a trade of my 3rd best player for a draft pick next year. (By losing last week, I am effectively out of the playoffs.)

2) Keeper Draft Penalty – Keeping one guy eliminates your first round pick, two, your second. Basically, if you have players that you feel are better than your draft slots, you keep them. If not, you draft. At worst, if everybody else keeps, you get the first two picks, then it is just a normal draft.

2) Trade Deadline – I think this is a must, especially for a keeper league. It minimizes the likelihood of someone completing a fire sale of their team at the end. (Basically what I am trying to do, but I’m not going nuts with it, because I think it would be abusing the system.)

3) Different Divisions – I like the idea of wild card spots, to avoid the situation that labba is in. Reward good teams in hard divisions.

4) An even crazier idea. – Limit keepers to 3 years. Every third year, a player MUST go back into the draft. So basically, its like trading for a baseball player with half a year left. Sacrifice the future for immediate returns. Helps break up dynasties. Makes the question of who to keep more interesting.

5) Auction Draft - Although I have only done 2 ever, I prefer auction drafts.  It eliminates the “It’s unfair, I got the 3rd/10th/17th pick.” argument. Really control your team. Then, instead of trading draft picks, you can trade “dollars” in next years budget.

Anyhow, just ideas I had. I feel like they all make it much less on luck, and much more on a sound strategy. More like a GM. It would be slightly more time intensive, but I really don’t think a lot more.

thoughts

Thanks for starting this, ships.

1. Given a couple players basically dropped out, I don’t know if keepers really work.

2. The keepers rule really hurts anyone who didn’t play this season but wants to next season. How many new users will join between now and August ‘10? I’m a relatively new member; I just happened to join and get active just as the fantasy league started. As a matter of fact, I joined the league before I made my first comment.

2. Question for Denver: does the draft order reverse for next season, or is it the same as this season?

3. If we’re going to do keepers, the penalty is necessary for fairness.

4. If we’re going to do keepers, I think we should limit it to two seasons instead of one.

5. There definitely should be a trade deadline.

6. I’m a huge fan of a wildcard spot or two.

7. Mixing up the divisions for next season is a good idea as well.

8. I’ve never done an auction draft, so I don’t really have an opinion of it. However, not demanding a huge amount of time for the draft is a good thing. There are lots of schedules to coordinate, and that can be tough. Last season, I had two drafts at the same time; it was really tough to do both at the same time. Changing to an auction draft would make it even more difficult.

To answer both of you...

I’m not sure what the capabilities are for Fleaflicker. I know I can change the keeper status at any time so whatever we decide to do there is easy.

I also know I can boot guys out, sign new up and realign divisions as well.

Draft order for next year…last year was at random. My thought was if we did a keeper that I would manually set the order based on fishing position just like a real leagues draft. So, last place gets the first pic etc. Just a thought.

Not sure I can do a penalty for keepers though, so maybe we should scrap it all together.

by Owen Kemp on Dec 6, 2009 10:08 AM CST reply actions

If we do keepers...

You have to give up your draft pick first round for one, second round for two. Again it is completely unfair (and totally dumb IMO) that someone who randomly got a top 3 pick last year would get to get that pick AND another first round pick. That is dumber than passing three plays from your own one yard line with the ball and a three point lead with only a couple minutes to go.

Again, keepers should just be avoided all together. New people will likely sign up for the league by the time one whole year passes which completely eliminates keepers. But if you want more proof I shall continue. The fun in these leagues is forcing you to draft well every year and the random order. Again keepers still give someone who lucked out with a high pick last year. If someone got Jones Drew for example with the second pick, they can keep him and give up a say 12th pick? So they get a 12th first round pick and instead say hey I’ll keep my top 5 pick from last year instead, and then get a higher second round pick?

I’m not sure how much more convincing I can be. The fact that we will lose people/add people for next year eliminates keepers right there, and then the overall problems with fairness should be icing on the cake. No keepers please. New draft, new team every year. Only way to keep it even for everyone.

by KU Grad 08 on Dec 6, 2009 11:53 AM CST reply actions

Agreed

Keepers generally hold far more cons than pros. Would rather redraft each year and start anew.

I appreciate the shout out...

but jeez – I can’t even beat a freaking dead beat this week. Maybe I don’t deserve it… : (

Too bad we can’t have a contraction draft for Smoke-a-thons players. I could really use Pierre Thomas or Harrison.

Tell me aboot it

I need depth at running back so bad going into the PLAYOFFS oh denver your tears taste so good one point win get up.

Sorry, in all seriousness though it was probably the closest most epic game in fantasy history. I’m excited for the next fantasy roundup.

by KU Grad 08 on Dec 8, 2009 9:26 PM CST up reply actions

you can bet that one is going to be the game of the week....

I was hoping and praying for an Aaron Rodgers TD on that last drive instead of the Crosby kick but that’s what happens when a team is ahead. I think I needed the Pack to be playing from behind. Great way to wrap the season, definitely an epic game.

by Owen Kemp on Dec 8, 2009 9:34 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah it was even more tense for me

As I was also rooting for a packer win. There are so many what ifs from the game both ways, what if that pick rodgers throws doesn’t hit drivers leg and get caught (fluke) what if Crosby doesn’t miss the earlier 36 yarder, etc etc etc. Very epic indeed.

QUESTION -

Am I in the playoffs since Gingerballs dropped out of the league? Right now Percy Harvin is in the playoffs…

I was hoping when I deleted him it would bump you into the playoffs...

still trying to figure it out…that was my intention but I’m not certain it’s going to work

by Owen Kemp on Dec 9, 2009 11:43 AM CST up reply actions

Don't let him in!

If you can’t beat someone who never logged in or changed their team its your fault! BLOOD!!!

I’m just kidding, I’d rather have someone earn the satisfaction personally in the postseason than someone who didn’t put in the blood sweat and tears we all did

by KU Grad 08 on Dec 9, 2009 11:46 AM CST up reply actions

Granted, I have a skewed opinion

but this deadbeat team is the 2nd ranked team in the league by points. Do we want to take a chance of a deadbeat winning the league?

I’m definately pissed that I didn’t beat Percy Harvin last week. My entire squad just laid an egg. Just one of those weeks. That’s what happens when you rely on WR’s for points. It’s feast or famine…

by labbadabba on Dec 9, 2009 11:59 AM CST up reply actions

I've been relying on tight ends haha

But Winslow/Vernon Davis have been huge for me all year. Jennings was a bust, and Holmes is inconsistent, and my only running back (Frank Gore) is averaging about 9 carries and 30 yards the past three weeks.

I’m excited about making the postseason but I’m pretty skeptical in regards to how I will fare in them.

by KU Grad 08 on Dec 9, 2009 12:31 PM CST up reply actions

Am I thinking really crazy here?

Couldn’t labba take ownership of “Smokeathon” then change the name and completely trade the whole roster with his own? I’m busy studying for finals, so my brain might not be working right, but could that work?

Insanity is just a state of mind.

by giants9107 on Dec 9, 2009 1:18 PM CST up reply actions

he could...

but that would be like the Chiefs suddenly getting to make and go through the playoffs with the Colts roster…doesn’t seem right.

by Owen Kemp on Dec 9, 2009 1:34 PM CST up reply actions

ok so here's what I did Labba...

I moved Percy into Bensa’s division and the Rejects into yours. This way you are tops in your division and the Smoke a Thon is a game back of Bensa and the Power Converters. At the moment this works out in terms of the desired result. If however it looks like Percy is going to overtake Bensa it’s back to the drawing board.

by Owen Kemp on Dec 9, 2009 1:37 PM CST reply actions

it's only one...if it was two he'd have clinched...

I’m looking into taking over Percy’s team and tanking it this week so I can make certain there are not mistakes.

by Owen Kemp on Dec 9, 2009 1:44 PM CST up reply actions

and done...

Percy has no one on his roster this week so everything looks set up to work out….next year win the damn thing on your own Labba. You’ve been involved in a few bailouts this year : )

by giants9107 on Dec 9, 2009 2:00 PM CST up reply actions

yep it is...

the only division that wasn’t clinched at this point though to my knowledge was division 3…so really the only change I need to make is Slow Dance playing the Seal Clubbers because they haven’t played a second time yet and that would settle the division.

glad I figured this out

division four actually was yet to be determined as well. I almost handed that thing to the Farm Boys when Reesing for Heisman was still supposed to play them.

Looks like I missed most of the discussion here, but I do wonder what it says that two dead teams had to moved because they're still winning games.

With the huge league, the waiver wire was crap all year. My team has sucked, but every time I had a player get hurt there was nothing available to replace them. The first quarterback I started with was Trent Edwards (sucks), after he was injured there wasn’t a single starting qb left on the waiver wire. That also happened with rb’s. Is there any way to cut down on the roster size which would leave some guys available in a league this big?

I used to work with an old man that told me- Son, every workplace has a dumbass. If you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.

by Warden11 on Dec 9, 2009 6:46 PM CST reply actions

Maybe we could eliminate the rb/wr/te position

And then just have one qb, two rb, two wr, one tight end and then one random, or just three wr and then no random. I’d prefer the first option.

That or every team gets one less sub. But yeah a league this big, an injury or two can derail you big time.

Of course, was also there for a music festival. Ski during the day and get drunk watching concerts all afternoon and evening? Yeah, it was a good time.

and we’ll be there this month for the 10th anniversary of that occasion. Steamboat will always have a special place in my soul.

I’m not sure if I’ll be skiing (what with the partially severed toe and all), but it’ll be fun regardless, I think.

watched the 2000 KU-Duke tourney game at the Tugboat

I went there for Spring Break in 2000, and a buddy and I watched the KU-Duke 2000 tournament game there. The first half was a riot, we were winning, we convinced our waitress to do shots with us, we bought rounds for the 12 people at the bar.

The second half was not as fun, but BOY were we drunk.

It made dinner with his soon-to-be-ex-fiance’s family far more fun for us (and less fun for them).

I was so hung over the next morning, I couldn’t ski.
