Coach Poll

Editors Note...I'm bumping this to the front page because it looks like this thing is coming to a close soon.  Obviously not today at this point, but you'd have to think tomorrow is going to be the day so this thing can get wrapped up prior to the weekend.

Thanks for putting this poll together rockchalks7, I am adding one name to the mix though for the sake of argument and that's one Mark Mangino.  I know we all believe he's gone, but obviously nothing is official yet.

With all the speculation going on and Mangino likely gone this week who do we turn to next. An up and comer or someone who has proved before they can succeed and are waiting for another chance?Just threw up some names that have been tossed around recently. Put Harbaugh on there because read today that he's in KC and has been asked about KU job. Not sure if he's interested though. Can only hope. Cast your vote and discuss reasons for or for not wanting certain coach.

Larry Fedora, USM

I like the fire, youth, energy this guy brings. His teams always play hard and his talent overachieves. I believe he would give us the best opportunity to continue building what Mangino had started.

Gill – I’d be worried that all we would be doing is training the next bugeater coach. Plus, he’s a bugeater. And did I mention that that at Nebraska, the “N” stands for nowlege?

Phillip Fulmer – Eh, I don’t know. The dude won some game in the SEC, but can he recruit in Big 12 country? Also, his Tennessee programs weren’t know for being the cleanest. Plus, the dude is fat and for perception reasons I think we need a skinny coach.

Edsell – No thanks. Stay on the east coast.

Sumlin – I think it’s too soon to take a gamble on him. His defenses have been HORRIBLE.

Tuberville – I don’t know. My gut says no way.

Randy Strong – do you mean Charlie Strong, the UF DC? I’d be curious about him, but wish he had more ties to KU and Big 12 country in general (that can be said about just about all of these guys).

Harbaugh – just waiting for the UofM opportunity. Do we want to be his stepping stone?

Major Applewhite – A gamble. Young, intelligent an with a ton of ties in Texas and Louisiana. Just don’t know if it is too soon to give the kid a shot.

Y’all already know that I want a hard-nose, blue-collar type of football program at KU. I don’t want a flashy, high-profile big name coach just waiting to move to Georgia or Michigan or another BCS school.

The guy has to be a hard ass. A good eye for developing assistant coaches, a great eye for putting the talent we do get in the right spots, and the ability to make his players overachieve.

I don’t believe KU will EVER be a football powerhouse. As such, we’re never going to win the recruiting battles with the big guys on a consistent basis. That’s why it’s important to get a coach who specializes in player and coach development. Let’s out work the other teams – consistently. That will lead to Ws.

I'd be happy witt this one...

by Owen Kemp on Dec 3, 2009 1:09 PM CST up reply actions

I'd love to get Harbaugh

Don’t see it happening. Fulmer I dunno, I like that he has had success and could bring in some recruits especially on D, but I’d like someone a little younger with more up and coming flair. Who knows, I don’t know what to think.

Still think it’d be awesome if we got Tuberville. I know its not likely and no one on here seems to want him for some dumb reason but the dude consistently won in the SEC, could bring in very high level recruits, and knows how to win. Furthermore, I’m sure he’d love to take shots at Texas and OU when they come around again with his program built up a bit.

by KU Grad 08 on Dec 3, 2009 2:27 PM CST reply actions

Charlie Strong, please

This guy has the most impressive resume out there for any guy that hasn’t been a head coach, IMO. He’s coordinated some of the most dominant defenses we’ve seen in the past decade. People claim he doesn’t “interview well,” but that seems like pretty easy PC-speak for “we don’t want to hire the black guy with the white wife,” especially when you factor in that he’s mostly interviewed for jobs in the South.

I would assume that no matter who we hire, their assistants are going to have Texas ties for recruiting. I don’t think any coach out there would be dumb enough not to make major efforts in that talent-rich of an environment. (BTW, there’s a great article in this week’s SI about Texas High School QBs and why they’re so successful at the D-1 level).

But by hiring Charlie, we could add on to our Texas recruits with some real in-roads into Florida. My ideal scenario would look something like this:

HC- Strong

OC- Warriner (people may say he’s lost it, but KU was still one of the better offenses in the country this year, and I love the Mad Scientist).

DC- Strong, or someone hand-picked by Strong

STC- Bowen, since special teams were better under his guidance, and we could maintain his great recruiting network.

QBC- Todd Reesing. Why not? He’s a bright guy that’s an excellent representative of the university. He has ties to one of the most dominant programs in Texas, plus still has some “star power” for the next couple of years for recruiting wherever we send him. Plus, it worked out really well on Friday Night Lights.

by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Dec 3, 2009 5:01 PM CST reply actions

Can't argue with that choice

And I’ve been advocating all along that we at least retain Bowen as special teams coach due to his recruiting talent and long term tie to the program.

I do however disagree with the Todd choice. I think he is a little too fresh out, plus I don’t think he would be interested, he plans on going to europe for a semesters worth of time and going to graduate school. Maybe down the line though, just seems like its not too much in his interest. I think Meier would be great in a coaching role of some kind down the line. As for recent guys, what about Bill Whittemore for a KU guy, or there are plenty of guys fresh out of some time in the pros that might take it and help us recruit more talent at QB.

Which again (I posted this in another thread) with Reesing’s huge numbers, the way our offense plays, etc how have we not landed bigger recruits at QB? Its starting to irk me. Its paid off at WR (all our current frosh, Terry, etc), RB (Toben), but doesn’t seem like are able to grab 4 star talent and up at QB.

by KU Grad 08 on Dec 3, 2009 7:48 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, that was kind of a joke.

As for QB recruits, maybe they’re just looking to see if Reesing was just a fluke? Dunno. It’s not like we’ve had only one successful WR, RB, etc. recently- we’ve been able to duplicate the success.

Lake Travis is not one of the most "dominant programs in Texas"

Their winning ways have come about only recently.

And do you really think Bowen would stick around with a MAJOR demotion to STC?

Sawin' wood - damn, blade just broke

by Rivethead on Dec 3, 2009 9:02 PM CST up reply actions

Yes

Because the way his defenses perform, no other major program is going to hire him as a D Coordinator. He could be STC at KU or secondary coach at Alabama State.

by KU Grad 08 on Dec 3, 2009 10:23 PM CST up reply actions

But after working his way up for 10 years....

I can’t see him willingly taking a step back. The dude busts his ass and is a fantastic recruiter. I could see him jumping at a smaller school opportunity

Sawin' wood - damn, blade just broke

by Rivethead on Dec 3, 2009 10:35 PM CST up reply actions

I'll grant he has worked hard, paid his dues and recruits well

But the fact remains our defenses have sucked under him. Then again he is young and I felt our defenses made progress under him. I’m on the fence about Bowen, I like his energy, KU commitment and recruiting but still can’t shake our poor play on D.

by KU Grad 08 on Dec 3, 2009 10:49 PM CST up reply actions

I'd love a guy like Strong, Fedora or Harbaugh.

However, I feel like we’d be looking for a new coach in 2 years again. I’ll take Fulmer because he’s older and this might be a final stop for him. A nice 5-7 year guy maybe. Right about the time that Peyton Manning retires from the NFL. Then he becomes our coach for life : )

That's what we do at Kansas, we WIN.

by Ghost of Mark Randall on Dec 3, 2009 5:45 PM CST reply actions

Stepping Stone

Just curious- what big-time jobs do you see opening up in the next couple of years?

I could see Michigan, but they would definitely want to bring in a “Michigan Man” this time (aka, Harbaugh or Les Miles). Maybe Ole Miss? Sure there’s a lot of passion there, but is it really that much better of a job than Kansas? You’re still about middle of the pack in the SEC recruiting pecking order, and you probably wouldn’t make any more money there, or have any better facilities. Richt at Georgia could be under some heat, but he’s had so much success there you figure he’ll get it going again. Do the hippies at Cal eventually get tired of Tedford?

Maybe if Miles goes to Michigan, LSU would come calling for Strong or Fedora. But there’s no guarantee of that.

If I’m a head coach, I only make a move to somewhere I feel like I have a better chance at winning a national championship. And other than places like Florida, Miami, Oklahoma, Texas, USC, LSU, Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame (maybe) and Alabama, where else qualifies?

by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Dec 3, 2009 8:09 PM CST up reply actions

superb points

Sure, the legacy teams come open every once in a while. But if Fisher doesn’t succeed at FSU, is that still a name job? And when Notre Dame fires its coach every 3-5 years, doesn’t the job security win out over coaching at Notre Dame?

Granted, things change every single year. But I find it interesting that guys like Patterson and Kelly seem to be staying pat in what would be considered 2nd tier jobs (compared to NDU, for example).

I doubt Gill could turn down Osborne if they did actually fire Pelini. And I could see Harbaugh going to Michigan.

But I could also see somebody like Fedora or Applewhite making a career at Kansas.

Yes.

And yes, Mack Brown has already recruited them. They faced each other several weeks ago in the playoffs. I believe Shipley’s team won.

But because of their brother’s relationship, they have become close friends and intend to follow their brothers footsteps to Texas.

The Austin American Statesman had a big article on this two weeks ago (maybe more). You can try googling it to see if they posted it online.

and don’t really buy into the extension thing. Coaches break those all the time. But as far as the coaches above go, I’ll go Fulmer.

I understand wanting Patterson, and you may admit he's a pipe dream.

But I have to ask, if he turned down K-State what makes you think he would come to Lawrence?

(or do you admit that it’s not happening?)

Seven years.

Man that’s a HUGE commitment to a coach. The buyout would be…..well we’d have to drop the basketball program and Lew would have to work for free.

by DCJayhawk0208 on Dec 3, 2009 8:22 PM CST reply actions

I'd like somebody with a defensive pedigree

6 out of the top 10 defenses in the country in ppg and ypg this year are on their way to BCS bowls. That’s not a coincidence.

In the modern era of spread offenses and 85 scholarships, most schools out there can cobble together enough offense. But good defenses are truly what separate the Good from the Great.

Agree with this

Or if we get an offensive coach, he has the prestige/connections to bring in a top flight coordinator

Definitely agree!

Defenses win championships. It’s really always been that way in many sports.

Vast majority of Vol Fans very pleased with Lane

and would love to see Fulmer go to another program where he would be out of the Knoxville media and the national media so Lane can do his job without putting up with Fulmer’s whining about his dismissal. He could put Kansas on par with KSU and Missouri behind Nebraska and above Colorado and Iowa State. I doubt he can compete with OK or TX but it would be interesting to see him try. His recruiters got Meachem out of Oklahoma and he will claim an assist on Bryce Brown I imagine. He spent time at Wichita State.
Probably would be an improvement for Kansas football and his bruised ego would not rest until he gives it his best shot. His family approach to coaching would be a nice antidote to Mangino’s abusive behavior. The players would probably love him.

by Owen Kemp on Dec 4, 2009 11:54 AM CST up reply actions

Yes I'm a Vol Fan

Hope you don’t mind my 2 cents
I was a big Fulmer fan thru 2001 and know a good deal about his strengths and faults.
I was glad to see him go and to see new blood in Knoxville. I think 15 years is the outer limit for a coach who is loyal to a fault to his staff. Fulmer refused to fire assistants who got complacent and lazy and he felt his “equity” from winning the National Championship had him set for life in Knoxville. That’s not a good thing in something as competitive as SEC football.
That doesn’t mean he doesn’t know how to build a winning program and take it to the top. Catching him with a bruised ego and something to prove could be very good for Kansas since he will work like heck to prove that being let go was a mistake.
Best of luck in your coaching search no matter who is chosen but even a Vol fan who was glad to see Fulmer out admits that he could be a very good hire at Kansas.

A little off topic,

but has anyone else noticed the ad that is in the middle of the home page?

“Hiring Now, Anyone Can Apply”

I have this irrational fear that KU_Lew may get on here and get swayed by that, and we end up with Edsall. Just wondering if it was bothering anyone else.
