Jayhawks vs. The Golden Bears Open Game Thread
California Golden Bears at Kansas Jayhawks, Dec 22, 2009 8:00 PM CST

California enters the phog tonight to take on the Kansas Jayhawks in a nationally televised contest. Basketball continues to gradually nudge itself into the spotlight as the season is quickly approaching the point where it becomes real, the competition becomes better and the games matter most.
Cal is a preseason top 15 team. They've lost a few games and now sit on the outside looking in, but Cal is a good team. Senior guards, a solid coach and a fairly experienced group. This should be a fun one tonight, rock chalk and enjoy.

Go KU!!!
Who thinks we’re gonna catch the tip of our game?
Bueller? Bueller?
Operation 40-0 is a go. Proceed to target.
Jay Bilas
just said Rick Barnes and Bill Self is a tossup. He must not have spoken to Bill Self since HCBS was in 3rd grade, cause thats the only way it’s a tossup
I think Barnes is a solid coach
and of course, I’m biased toward HCBS, but I trust Bilas a lot in his analysis. He’s pretty spot on most of the time…
Operation 40-0 is a go. Proceed to target.
I think Bilas is a great coach
but I cant get behind anything that suggests Rick Barnes is an elite coach
Barnes is certainly an elite recruiter
and if you’re good enough at that, you don’t need to coach much. :)

I missed the comment about Self
but he did give an edge to KU in the potential match-up. Bilas picks us to make the final four almost every year, so I can’t be too harsh on him.
by hunter s. royal on Dec 22, 2009 7:51 PM CST up reply actions
What impresses me most about Bilas
is that, while a Duke alum, he is as critical of Duke basketball as any college basketball analyst. I like Hubert Davis, too, for a similar reason (regarding UNC).
Operation 40-0 is a go. Proceed to target.
He was on Coach K's first good teams,
so I don’t think he has the arrogance of the latter day Dukies.(Jay Williams, cough, cough)

Bensa...
saw you were in Las Crucas(spelling?) what takes you down that way?
Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.
Las Cruces, indeed.
In-laws live down here. We’re here for Christmas, then we all head up to Steamboat for a week.
Operation 40-0 is a go. Proceed to target.
ah yes...
I have an uncle in Las Cruces and enjoy your time in Steamboat…getting some good snow over the next few days potentially.

snow in Steamboat would be nice
not sure yet if I can ski or not (on account of the toe), but I’m hopeful I’ll get out at least a couple times.

what route do you guys take from Las Cruces...
to Steamboat out of curiosity.
Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.
I'm not in charge of the route,
but I suspect we’ll take I-25 to Denver, then I-470 to I-70 to Dillon/Silverthorne, then whatever state highway goes from there to Steamboat.
Operation 40-0 is a go. Proceed to target.
gotcha..
that’s probably the fastest, didn’t know if you were headed any of the back scenic ways through the southern mountains.

I have to admit...
I think Texas is better than us right now

I just hope we can knock them down…I have to say this could be a year where that rivalry jumps to epic proportions. If KU and Texas decides the regular season Big12…then the Big12 tourney and if the stars continue to align in the final four…it’s going to really catapult that thing up the ranks.
Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.
We never play well down in Austin
for some reason. I have a feeling we’ll get the rematch in the Big 12 title game though
Wow.
what a run here by Texas.
Reminiscent of the last couple minutes of the first half against UNC on Saturday.

His response: “I’m not really into the bowl games….not until the one that matters”.
Unfrickin believeable. And sorry.

too right, I’m afraid. Of course, attendance doesn’t always equal the talent of the team playing.
See the Chiefs.

Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.
I think it's
a kind of situation where the team is figuring out how we have to play when we play good teams. We haven’t played a lot of quality competition, and we’re getting a great test tonight from a very good team playing very well in a tough environment. It’s all part of the process, and as Labba says, we must trust the process.

yeah definitely
but look at how much difference there is with this team than last year. They are all still learning how to play together. The additions of Xavier and the Morris Twins being studs and the adjustment Cole and Sherron have had to make to having other weapons is a big difference from last season.
I guess all I’m saying is that we have sooooo much talent this year that the only thing that matters about last year is the experience all of our super young players got. By March, we will be right at our full potential and maybe already there.

good thing in basketball is...
at the end of the year you don’t have to defend the schedule because you get to win it on the court. Bad news is a weak schedule doesn’t prepare you as well to accomplish that.

We have a 10 point lead
If we don’t let them get bs baskets off second/third chance putbacks early and some turnovers.
They haven’t gotten anything at all inside. Gotta focus on stopping the three if we can. Get out on the perimeter more and trust the help defense
It looks like they're shooting lights out on us,

They're talking about who on KU can defend Damion James
and it’s a good question. I don’t think he’ll be the biggest problem, actually. We’ve got enough bodies to throw at him to contain him, even though he does present some problems. I think X would be the best option, personally, followed by Marcus, then Brady.

yeah
he’s probably a little too quick for Markieff, foul trouble would be likely if he was on him

Checking in
This is exactly what Cal did all of last year. Christopher is amazing when he’s on, and it sure looks like he’s on tonight.
It’s gonna be a tough game, especially if Cole can’t get going.
Insanity is just a state of mind.
i can't find the exact minutes logged,
but it feels like they only played 6 guys in the first half, except for the cameo by the wannabe Yao for a minute. combine that with the fact that they didn’t even take a timeout until the :30 mark of the first half, and i’m thinkin they’ll be runnin on fumes by the 8:00 TV timeout
I would think.
It’s been a very uptempo game too.

I know, I was just kidding
But KU better kick some butt this half, because my tolerance for disappointment is gone.
Just waiting on some offense....
oof
That was a rough first half. I felt like, just as we were about to go on a run, we would get hacked like crazy and there would be no call, and things would just go back and forth before they would jack up a crazy shot and make it. I’m not used to OTHER teams jacking crazy sh*t up and making it in the Fieldhouse.
Again Cal misses
We foul, they score next time.
Just time and time again give this team another opportunity on offense
this one's going to be close

Plus his defense has been superb
His size, lanky quick arms are a nightmare for opposing guards. If his defense continues to improve the next two years with added control and a bit more of an outside shot, he along with the Morri, TRob and the other youngsters are going to be a redicously athletic lineup.
A few thoughts
First, are we ever going to shoot 72% from the field again in the second half? Or whatever the percentage is. With our defense, anything close to that, or even above 50 is just lights out (cue image of Shawn Merriman doing douchy dance).
Morningstar back has been a nice addition off the bench for his shooting, defense, control, etc.
What more can you say about Sherron. Dude is a lion and we always have a shot with him out there leading us. When its all said and done, he will go done as a KU great and has been one of my favorite players ever (I know I’m young).

Anyone else seeing some similarities to 2008?
Not in terms of the team we have, because its a totally different setup than then, but I meant in the fact that there are a couple teams that are obviously going to be there at the end – KU, Texas, and UK. That year, UNC, KU, Memphis and UCLA were obviously the best by this point in the season, and remained that way the whole year.
I just feel like KU vs. UT is going to be for the number one overall seed, and KU vs. UK is going to be for the title.

I hope both those games happen
with those circumstances on the line and I hope we win both of them.
A little rudeness and disrespect can elevate a meaningless interaction to a battle of wills and add drama to an otherwise dull day.
