Jayhawks vs. The Golden Bears Open Game Thread

California Golden Bears at Kansas Jayhawks, Dec 22, 2009 8:00 PM CST

Download_blog_medium

California enters the phog tonight to take on the Kansas Jayhawks in a nationally televised contest.  Basketball continues to gradually nudge itself into the spotlight as the season is quickly approaching the point where it becomes real, the competition becomes better and the games matter most.

Cal is a preseason top 15 team.  They've lost a few games and now sit on the outside looking in, but Cal is a good team.  Senior guards, a solid coach and a fairly experienced group.  This should be a fun one tonight, rock chalk and enjoy.

Go KU!!!

Who thinks we’re gonna catch the tip of our game?

Bueller? Bueller?

Operation 40-0 is a go. Proceed to target.

by Bensa on Dec 22, 2009 7:46 PM CST reply actions

Jay Bilas

just said Rick Barnes and Bill Self is a tossup. He must not have spoken to Bill Self since HCBS was in 3rd grade, cause thats the only way it’s a tossup

by fetch9 on Dec 22, 2009 7:46 PM CST reply actions

I think Barnes is a solid coach

and of course, I’m biased toward HCBS, but I trust Bilas a lot in his analysis. He’s pretty spot on most of the time…

Operation 40-0 is a go. Proceed to target.

by Bensa on Dec 22, 2009 7:49 PM CST up reply actions

I think Bilas is a great coach

but I cant get behind anything that suggests Rick Barnes is an elite coach

by fetch9 on Dec 22, 2009 7:50 PM CST up reply actions

I missed the comment about Self

but he did give an edge to KU in the potential match-up. Bilas picks us to make the final four almost every year, so I can’t be too harsh on him.

by hunter s. royal on Dec 22, 2009 7:51 PM CST up reply actions

What impresses me most about Bilas

is that, while a Duke alum, he is as critical of Duke basketball as any college basketball analyst. I like Hubert Davis, too, for a similar reason (regarding UNC).

Operation 40-0 is a go. Proceed to target.

by Bensa on Dec 22, 2009 7:52 PM CST up reply actions

He was on Coach K's first good teams,

so I don’t think he has the arrogance of the latter day Dukies.(Jay Williams, cough, cough)

by hunter s. royal on Dec 22, 2009 7:58 PM CST up reply actions

agree...

Bill Self > Rick Barnes

I'm not in charge of the route,

but I suspect we’ll take I-25 to Denver, then I-470 to I-70 to Dillon/Silverthorne, then whatever state highway goes from there to Steamboat.

I just hope we can knock them down…I have to say this could be a year where that rivalry jumps to epic proportions. If KU and Texas decides the regular season Big12…then the Big12 tourney and if the stars continue to align in the final four…it’s going to really catapult that thing up the ranks.

Absolutely agree, Denver

We are not the best team in the nation. We may have the most talent, but we’re not playing anywhere close to the top 2 or 3 in the country. Syracuse is playing better, UT is certainly better, maybe even Kentucky (I can’t believe I’m saying this!!!) is better right now.

yes, they’ve had some good wins but they’ve also struggled in a lot of games that they shouldn’t have. Lot’s of talent, but they are raw and play very spurty basketball at this point.

I think it's

a kind of situation where the team is figuring out how we have to play when we play good teams. We haven’t played a lot of quality competition, and we’re getting a great test tonight from a very good team playing very well in a tough environment. It’s all part of the process, and as Labba says, we must trust the process.

yeah definitely

but look at how much difference there is with this team than last year. They are all still learning how to play together. The additions of Xavier and the Morris Twins being studs and the adjustment Cole and Sherron have had to make to having other weapons is a big difference from last season.

I guess all I’m saying is that we have sooooo much talent this year that the only thing that matters about last year is the experience all of our super young players got. By March, we will be right at our full potential and maybe already there.

I’m not sure. Tech is solid this year no doubt but Washington and Cal both strike me as talented teams that will notch some big wins but also lose to several teams they shouldn’t (Cal already has dropped a few this year albeit to decent teams).

A couple of their kids were unconscious for a bit...

Robertson from the start until he got in foul trouble, then Christopher started making way too many step-back or step-aside deep two-pointers. Toss in Randle…they definitely have some guys that can make any shot, at any time. But no post presence. what.so.ever.

What I liked:

More good Tyshawn – 27 mins, 6-8 FG, 7 ast, 2 stls. And 13 points mostly of the “sometimes I look like i can get to the hoop whenever i want” variety. And 2 sick dimes that lead to the roof getting blow off the fieldhouse.

by 2.1 seconds left on Dec 22, 2009 10:34 PM CST up reply actions

Plus his defense has been superb

His size, lanky quick arms are a nightmare for opposing guards. If his defense continues to improve the next two years with added control and a bit more of an outside shot, he along with the Morri, TRob and the other youngsters are going to be a redicously athletic lineup.

by KU Grad 08 on Dec 22, 2009 10:38 PM CST up reply actions

A few thoughts

First, are we ever going to shoot 72% from the field again in the second half? Or whatever the percentage is. With our defense, anything close to that, or even above 50 is just lights out (cue image of Shawn Merriman doing douchy dance).

Morningstar back has been a nice addition off the bench for his shooting, defense, control, etc.

What more can you say about Sherron. Dude is a lion and we always have a shot with him out there leading us. When its all said and done, he will go done as a KU great and has been one of my favorite players ever (I know I’m young).

Anyone else seeing some similarities to 2008?

Not in terms of the team we have, because its a totally different setup than then, but I meant in the fact that there are a couple teams that are obviously going to be there at the end – KU, Texas, and UK. That year, UNC, KU, Memphis and UCLA were obviously the best by this point in the season, and remained that way the whole year.
I just feel like KU vs. UT is going to be for the number one overall seed, and KU vs. UK is going to be for the title.
