Kansas vs Alcorn State Open Game Thread

Alcorn St. Braves at Kansas Jayhawks, Dec 2, 2009 7:00 PM CST

Another leisure evening of beating down a overmatched opponent in the Phog.  I'm really looking forward to this team being tested more beginning with Sunday's trip to LaLa Land.  Nonetheless, if anyone is around and interested in a little OGT action...here you are.

I'm in Chicago on business so I doubt I'll be catching this one but enjoy.  Here's a link to an online feed for those outside the area and once again the password is: phog

Also, if it hasn't already happened as I set this up this morning...rumors are swirling that this football ordeal will be coming to a close very soon.  As in maybe tonight, maybe tomorrow morning.

Lets go Hawks!

Don’t sleepwalk on us tonight. Come out and powerbomb these guys.

I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.

No line on the game

and Alcorn State doesn’t have a win yet. I think we’ll be OK. :)

by hunter s. royal on Dec 2, 2009 6:53 PM CST up reply actions

Was there a line on K-State's game last night?

They struggled mightily with Ft Hays. Coach Martin was not pleased with his guys. Made the comment “we have some guys that either need to buy in or go home.”

K-State’s a scary team because athletically they can play with most teams, but as dysfunctional as it gets offensively.

I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.

by Warden11 on Dec 2, 2009 7:01 PM CST up reply actions

If they hit shots from the perimiter they are tough to beat

But if they get cold from the 3 they struggle mightily, where as more balanced teams like us can change up, feed the post, etc

by KU Grad 08 on Dec 2, 2009 7:03 PM CST up reply actions

Just checked yesterday's paper

and don’t see one. I think Martin has been getting pissed at some of his new recruits and sat them most of the game.(Kelly, Judge, and Enrique-Martin-SP?) Trying to teach a lesson.

by hunter s. royal on Dec 2, 2009 7:05 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, he wasn't happy at all last night.

I don’t mind K-State in basketball, like the way Frank Martin does some things and he’s bringing (hopefully) somewhat of a program there. I’m also pretty confident that he can’t outcoach or outrecruit Bill Self, so it’s a lot easier rooting for them than in football.

I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.

Should be our biggest win thus far

Scoreboard wise. Should run train on these boys. Hopefully we bring it.

I'm in my happy place

Just gotta share….got great news on a BIG contract today, which will allow me to hire another employee for the next year, enjoying a terrific bottle of Spanish red (Mencia) and my local butcher provided me with ground beef that made the best burger I’ve ever had. There was enough juice (grease) left in the pan, I fried up onions for the burgers afterward.

And my Jayhawks are playing tonight.

All I need now is for it to get out that Major Applewhite is our next OC or HC.

I need some logo work and maybe some basic web advice. It’d be a small contract, and maybe not until the 1st of the year, but I’d pay a fair price if you’re interested.

I’ve done plenty of that stuff. And I did an internship at the KS Attorney General’s office in Topeka right after graduating so I know a bit about government stuff.

stories...

I have some hilarious stories about past campaigns, especially the ’04 presidential.

Now I’m too old and too married to go jumping from campaign to campaign.

by DCJayhawk0208 on Dec 2, 2009 7:09 PM CST up reply actions

hey!

And my wife’s soon-to-be alma mater (post-bac), George Mason, is on TV! They’re losing to GW, but at least I can cheer on the Patriots.

by DCJayhawk0208 on Dec 2, 2009 6:56 PM CST up reply actions

True story

The year Mason crashed the final 4 I picked them to go to the elite 8. I had no reasoning behind it, I always pick ridiculously in the tourny and a childhood friend was going there. That pick alone won me my pool. Now I’m a large Mason supporter.

by KU Grad 08 on Dec 2, 2009 6:58 PM CST up reply actions

my wife's pool

That year, one numb-nuts female (an alum of GMU) who picked the winners based on mascots and colors picked Mason to lose to UNC in the championship game.

Obviously, she cleaned house.

by DCJayhawk0208 on Dec 2, 2009 7:00 PM CST up reply actions

My girlfriend was going to win the pool the year we won the title

She was destroying me and 22 of my friends, but she picked UCLA to win the title game over KU just to piss me off. KU won the title, and she got edged out by two people by one point. If it was possible, more satisfaction to the title.

Probably a good game to miss Slam.

I’m guessing Teahan makes an appearance in the first 10 minutes since Self should be emptying the bench early.

I can't watch hockey in the states

I used to live in Europe and got into euro hockey since that and soccer was all that was on EuroSport. I enjoy european hockey so much more for some reason. I could go into the reasons some other time when we got some time.

It's always jarring to watch the Miracle On Ice game

and see the size of the ice and lack of padding on both the players & goalies. Players flying up and down, actually skating and making skillful moves. The NHL has turned into on ice rugby.

by hunter s. royal on Dec 2, 2009 7:08 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah it has

Did you see that defender hit the goalie (of his own team) on the head last night? Jesus what was he doing

by KU Grad 08 on Dec 2, 2009 7:12 PM CST up reply actions

Frickin' idiot.

The more I watch that clip, the more strange it becomes. It almost (even though I assume not) looks like he was trying to whack him.

Yeah its just like

How did he not see him? And then he goes and whacks the goal again.

He is lucky that goalie is fine. I know they make hockey helmuts indestructable but still that had to hurt like a bitch.

Imagine the days where goalies went helmutless. That had to take some basketball sized cajones.

The crazy thing was...

if you go look at it, he looks back before the second swing and sees the goalie going down.

by averagegatsby on Dec 2, 2009 7:16 PM CST up reply actions

The best part is

He isn’t even part of the play that results in the goal he is on the otherside. He watches it go in from behind the net then casually destroys the goalie and then his stick

by KU Grad 08 on Dec 2, 2009 7:17 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah like you and Melrose said...

Gets more bizarre the more you watch it.

The goalie was speaking to reporters today, said now he thinks its kind of funny. Freaking hockey players haha

by KU Grad 08 on Dec 2, 2009 7:22 PM CST up reply actions

Im the same way with Soccer...

the European Championship last year was Bananas… And the fact that i was in Germany and Germany made it to the finals made it all that more amazing… Of course losing to Spain really brought down the entire nation for a week.

This space for rent.

by averagegatsby on Dec 2, 2009 7:09 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah I was pulling for Germany

I don’t like Spain’s team and the way they play. I used to live in Geneva, Switzerland so I still love european soccer (er football) especially the Premier league, EuropCup and of course world cup.

by KU Grad 08 on Dec 2, 2009 7:13 PM CST up reply actions

I nearly hated it before I went to Germany...

and the Euro cup started shortly after I got there I was actually in Prague during the opening match which was the Czech Rebublic c Autria. Awesome experience

Now Im really excited for the World Cup, and I’ve decided that if I am going to watch MLS its going to be Seattle because of how they run their team with fans having partial control of the Front Office… And its owned by Drew Carey.

by averagegatsby on Dec 2, 2009 7:15 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah I'll go to a few Wizard games

But MLS is tough after all the european soccer. Its like when I would watch the Euro Football League over there after years of NFL. Just like… yeah its cool but not the same.

by KU Grad 08 on Dec 2, 2009 7:19 PM CST up reply actions

I didn't even bother.

Though It really has given me perspective on American sports, when I was in Dresden it was just like Green Street Hooligans, Riot police were waiting at the train station, and helicopters were circling over head… Obviously a match was going on that day. Plus nearly every other public advertisement was an advertisement for anti-Hooliganism.

by averagegatsby on Dec 2, 2009 7:22 PM CST up reply actions

Soccer hooliganism is so terrific though to put thing in perspective

Anytime people over here bitch about fans being too into it I’m like “go to a european soccer match like a England vs. France. People get killed”

Teams these days aren’t use to that triple option offense. I’m scared of how we will do against GTech next year.

by KU Grad 08 on Dec 2, 2009 7:35 PM CST up reply actions

We as in ND... or KU?

But yeah there is that, but its more of Weis’ ability to only bring in one elite defender in 5 years at ND. Receivers and QBs Galore, but real lack of depth at all other positions.

KU

We as in KU

Play them next year in the non-con. I’m not a big Notre Dame fan, nothing against them and I’m catholic, I just really disliked Weiss for some reason.

And one of my best friends is a ND fan (brother and family went there, he went to KU with me) so I love jabbing him.

by KU Grad 08 on Dec 2, 2009 7:39 PM CST up reply actions

Fair enough...

the first football game I ever watched was the Irish opening game in 89’ they were defending champion… Ive been subject to a life of pain ever since.

I also went to a Catholic school that rammed them down our throats (had to be a better way to phrase that). So from a very young age I was groomed that ND wasn’t just a college.

They remind me off the Chiefs when Dick completely blew off the D and just played with the O.

by hunter s. royal on Dec 2, 2009 7:39 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah...

Well… In my not so humble opinion… Weis is a good offensive game planner, but terrible coach, his recruit classes should have progressed better than they did.

by averagegatsby on Dec 2, 2009 7:42 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah although their main problem has been D

Which isn’t really his bag coming from an offensive background. Their O has not been too bad during his tenure

by KU Grad 08 on Dec 2, 2009 7:44 PM CST up reply actions

It actually been pretty up and down...

Tate and Clausen have dominated this year, but last year it was good, not great and the year before it was dreadful. Some of that is just the natural progression of Clausen and Tate, but I dunno, having seen every Irish game for the last 10 year, they just don’t seem well “coached”

Who do you think is going to take the job

My guess is Ferrentz at Iowa, not sure why. Feel like he has done all he can do at Iowa and has that midwestern flavor that could help the Irish. Plus it seems like he has always been good at developing talent and a good in-game coach

by KU Grad 08 on Dec 2, 2009 7:48 PM CST up reply actions

I'm saying Kelly

by fetch9 on Dec 2, 2009 7:49 PM CST up reply actions

You think his saying he is staying at cincy

is just coach speak at this time? Wouldn’t surprise me, although he has a lot of young talent and an easy league

by KU Grad 08 on Dec 2, 2009 7:50 PM CST up reply actions

I mentioned Butch Davis a couple weeks ago...

and it actually seems to be gaining some steam. What he did at Miami was just short of miraculous, and he is doing pretty good at NC so far too.

AD there wants a defensive guy, so I doubt it would be Kelly, he may be the fall back.

And it seems to me that Ferentz is not interested at all in ND, he had a back handed comment about pep rallies a few weeks ago.

by averagegatsby on Dec 2, 2009 7:51 PM CST up reply actions

Davis would be a good choice IMO

Sustained success, can recruit, can obviously build up. Be a good hire

by KU Grad 08 on Dec 2, 2009 7:52 PM CST up reply actions

He brought Miami back from the brink...

Erickson left them with serious sanctions, they had lost like 39 scholorship over 5 years and still won a title.

Now this deserves a rec,

a real one, too.

I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.

by Warden11 on Dec 2, 2009 7:27 PM CST up reply actions

Ha! I wish.

I have a root cellar below my kitchen. The entrance is a trap door that weighs about 60 pounds or so. I was retrieving some Christmas decorations and the cellar was kinda muddy, so I took off my shoes before exiting onto the linoleum floor. Somehow (this part is a little fuzzy still) the door handle slipped out of my hand and it slammed shut on my toe. Then, to make it worse, I lost my balance and fell ONTO the trap door, thus adding another 190 pounds on the door. Once I finally was able to get off the ground and lift the door off the toe, the damage had been done.

We went right away to the ER, and they removed the nail, re-stitched the nail back on, and stitched the toe back together. It got cut about 75% through, and was hanging basically by some skin on the under-side of my toe. The bone was absolutely shattered. The doctor said it was basically turned into dust. It was pretty awesome.

I go back to the doctor tomorrow morning. Hopefully the toe will heal by itself. If it doesn’t I may lose the end and they’ll have to “revise the amputation,” as the doctor put it last night.

Not the way I prefer to spend a Tuesday night, but what’re you gonna do, right?

And I lost some toe from an attack by a crab on the beach. Its amazing how with some rest and leaving it alone how quickly stuff grows back. Just drink a ton of milk and vitamins and all that to help speed it along. What kind of meds did you get?

You'd think it would dehydrate the shit out of you

In an NBA game. Its Artest though so who knows if its true.

Maybe now he can say that he went into the stands during the Palace Brawl because he was drunk :)

by KU Grad 08 on Dec 2, 2009 8:44 PM CST up reply actions

I know I get extremely lethargic any time I start drinking.

I can barely drink a couple of beers while playing softball. I’d just much rather sit and drink.

I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.

Haha, it's true though.

I can only play softball after a couple beers :)

Pitched well my senior year at KU, we got to the semis of the KU intramural tournament before getting torched. Wasn’t my pitching though, poor infield play.

Good to see that Xavier is shooting well in the Phog.

Xavier is deadly from outside

An athletic swingman who can shoot the lights out and attack the rum is exactly what this team needed. Perfect fit with the quick guards and train running big men

What do you guys think about Tiger?

I know that if I had a wife who was a swedish model I’d be inclined to cheat on her too, especially with a girl that was on “Tool Academy” ::eye roll::

by KU Grad 08 on Dec 2, 2009 8:45 PM CST reply actions

he's an idiot for getting married

he can get it when he wants it, and obviously it’s not like he really loved her so that’s not much of an explanation

Interesting.

good or bad interesting?

I probably shouldn’t have been so short with my explanation, but the blog I most frequent (the big lead) has had roughly 5000 Tiger posts in the last 3 days so I’m a little sick of the story

by fetch9 on Dec 2, 2009 8:48 PM CST up reply actions

Just interesting.

The story bores me, personally. Major athlete that’s always been a little image obsessed is hiding something from the media and is blown open by complete incompetence behind the wheel? Omaigawsh let’s talk about it for 6 days! Lame.

I thought you knew that algebra was all razzamatazz. A Globetrotter always saves the good algebra for the final minutes.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on Dec 2, 2009 8:52 PM CST up reply actions

It's interesting

because it’s so out of character. Tiger is a total control freak. Odd it got away from him in such tabloid fashion.

by hunter s. royal on Dec 2, 2009 8:55 PM CST up reply actions

Dude did it to himself.

Baaaaaaaaawwwww. I hate juicy celebrity stories.

No pity from me.

I always thought Tiger was quite the arrogant ass, I just was surprised he was so blundering.

by hunter s. royal on Dec 2, 2009 8:59 PM CST up reply actions

Hooking up with a Vegas party-planner seems fairly half-assed.

Although he also probably figured she’d be better than anyone at keeping this stuff quiet.

I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.

by Warden11 on Dec 2, 2009 9:00 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah. You'd think he'd have learned from MJ

and stayed with the prostitutes. Pay em enough, they’ll be quiet. Plus, they can go to jail if they talk too much.

6 days?

That assumes this circus is somewhere near over, it’s got at least another week of shit.

by Warden11 on Dec 2, 2009 8:55 PM CST up reply actions

I'm sorry I brought it up

I just think its funny because Tiger seems like such a dork in a lot of ways. You guys should watch the Chappelle show where he makes fun of Tiger, priceless.

by KU Grad 08 on Dec 2, 2009 8:55 PM CST up reply actions

It's cool lol.

Like I said above, I just hate these types of things. I miss the days where athletes and celebrities could be total asshats and I wouldn’t constantly have to hear about it.

We live in the new Tim Tebow world of reporting

Remember after his concussion? “This just in Tebow peed without help!”

by KU Grad 08 on Dec 2, 2009 8:59 PM CST up reply actions

On the SBNation golf site

someone made an interesting comment on it. Along the lines of, “Normal men dream of cheating on their wives with a Swedish supermodel, what does Tiger dream off?” He’s already got the supermodel wife. Must like the skanks.

Perhaps Michael Jordan & Charles Barkley are not good wingmen.

by hunter s. royal on Dec 2, 2009 8:50 PM CST up reply actions

Haha ya think?

MJ was a gamblin swingerman, and Barkley… yeah. It is pretty sad, kind of untiger like.

He should have just stayed single till he was 40 and then married a 21 year old swedish model. Roamed the earth for the tang for a while get it out of his system.

by KU Grad 08 on Dec 2, 2009 8:52 PM CST up reply actions

Perhaps a career move?

Get married have a family, especially in a sport like golf… I dunno. But it is fishy considering the alleged affair has gone on for 2.5 years. Thats a damn long time

by KU Grad 08 on Dec 2, 2009 8:48 PM CST up reply actions

Supposedly only screwed her 20 times though.

Sounds like when he was in Vegas he looked her up. If she thought it was serious, I think she would have kept quiet and not settled for 150 grand.(The number she reportedly got from the magazine she talked to)

by hunter s. royal on Dec 2, 2009 8:53 PM CST up reply actions

Get old, play golf, get married, and have kids.

The American Dream!

Now we American’s just need to find a way to not look for strange.

Also read/heard a good comment about Elin-

No matter how much money you give a woman, she’s still gonna be crazy.

I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.

by Warden11 on Dec 2, 2009 8:54 PM CST up reply actions

Jesper Parnavik got Elin & Tiger together

and he said some wild stuff today. He’s incredibly pissed at Tiger about the whole deal. Golfers don’t usually make such honest statements. I’m sure it’ll be easy to google up his comments if you want to hear them.

Re: ND gig
This makes no sense. After all, how can so many people not understand that Notre Dame is just a Bob Stoops, Urban Meyer or Brian Kelly away from waking up its considerable echoes sooner than later?

This is a lead paragraph and I didn’t read anything else, but when are we going to learn that most BCS conference schools are an Urban Meyer/Bob Stoops away from being a powerhouse?

I'm conflicted on the whole Big T(elev)en ACC challenge thing

I really would like the Big T(elev)en to win one, just so they can get off the schneid, but I also loathe the Big T(elev)en and want everyone to realize/acknowledge that the Big XII is the better conference.

Operation 40-0 is a go. Proceed to target.
