1. Remember how Mangino wouldn’t let anyone give him a Gatorade bath? What a d*ck.

2. Love the part about how well he gets to know all of his players. It’s human nature to work harder for someone you believe cares about you and wants you to be successful.

that was my biggest take away...

the fact that he sat down with every single one of them to get to know “their story”…sign of a good manager of people is knowing what makes people tick, how to motivate and earn their respect.

Absolutely

knowing what motivates people individually and then collectively is a fabulous trait. Being able to treat every person differently, because each person IS different, while maintaining a consistent group approach can sometimes be a tricky line to walk, but if done effectively, will gain you legions of followers.

I'm hearing that Gill...

will be sitting down with the coaches on staff and making decisions on if and who of the current guys will stay. Obviously we know of Torbush and Long…just hopeful he finds a spot for some key assistants on staff today and they accept. It does sound like we are likely to see Gill offer at least a couple based on an initial player meeting.

I read Jason Whitlock's column...

And I just don’t get it.

I’ve read 3 articles by him and have yet to agree with one assertion he’s made in any of them.

He doesn’t think it’s impressive that Turner Gill won just as many games at Buffalo in his first 2 years as the school had in his first 7. He led them to a MAC championship in his third, and they lost their best 5 players from last year.

I still don’t understand the hang up on Harbaugh. Harbaugh is at a school with more tradition, with lower expectations that’s in a recruiting hotbed. From an outsider’s perspective it’s a lateral move, at best.

I’ll say it again, I think Gill is a homerun hire for you guys and I can’t wait to see you in the fall…

Hang 'em!!!

Whitlock is upset because

Buffalo beat his undefeated Ball State Cardinals in the MAC Championship game last year

Funny, ain't it?

He says something like, “this wasn’t about just one game.” And then proceeds to spend most of the article talking about how his “Cardinals lost that game, the Bulls didn’t win it.”

I know he enjoys playing the contrarian, and sometimes you need that to get a different viewpoint on something. But his argument here was incredibly weak, IMO.

Can we all agree that no one will be able to really make any kind of verdict on Turner Gill for at least two years? If we can, then why should Whitlock (or anyone, for that matter) be trying to do that now?

So far, all we really know is that he’s brought in two coordinators with good resumes, sealed up a commitment from a JUCO quarterback, hasn’t lost any recruits in response to his hiring, and has a hot daughter that’s about to get a lot of TV exposure.

It will take longer than two years to develop a verdict on Coach Gill

In two years he’ll still be using Mangino players.

We won’t be able to start thinking about a verdict on Gill until he’s completely cleansed the Mangino out of the KU system. Four years at least.

Who's next?

I'd agree...

but at the same time I think as soon as next year we might get a glimpse into how much of a player motivator he is since that has been labeled a strongsuit of his and a weak point for Mangino.

Also this will probably begin to sound like a broken record by next September, but I truly believe we will see guys in the mix for playing time next year that we will all be wondering where they came from. There is talent on this roster that was never going to see the light of day with Mangino and if they did it was probably going to be at the wrong position.

Gill is going to open things up. He did so at Buffalo and he’ll get to know his players here and do the same. I can already think of a couple that could be big beneficiaries of the fresh start.

From a Buffalo Fan...

You guys are getting one heck of a coach and while we Buffalo fans are sad to see him go we are glad he is going somewhere where his strengths as a human being (quiet leadership and as much concern for the players and for the plays) are needed.

The only knock I have on Gill as a coach is time management and I have none on him as a person.

http://bull-run.blogspot.com/2009/12/end-of-gill-era.html

“Guys didn’t really understand what it was like to be on a well-regimented team and coach Gill came in and playing under coach Osborne, he really brought in those values and the importance of school and education. He told us that we shouldn’t be used by the program, and we should get our degree. He made us focus on the big picture and not just football which was nice because then we didn’t have any problems with eligibility and stuff like that.” — Former UB Player Chris Callahan

“Coach Gill is very inspirational. If you ever needed to talk with him, he would always be there for you. He would call you out, not in a bad way but in a good way. Like he would say, ‘All right Ray, I am watching you this play, what are you going to do for me.’ He always had positive things to say and we always got better. He never lost his temper and never went crazy and a lot of guys like that because a lot of players get down when coaches get in your face.” — Former UB Player Ray Norell
