Turner Gill to Kansas
It appears Lew has found his man. After a little over a week sifting through several candidates and hundreds of rumors, this rollercoaster ride is over. Turner Gill will be the next head coach at the University of Kansas.
Is Turner Gill the "homerun" hire that many wanted? Maybe not, but he does provide a coach who has shown some signs of success at one of the more difficult programs to win at in the country. With Buffalo, Gill led the Bulls to their first ever MAC Conference Championship and the schools first 1A bowl appearance since joining the division in 1999.
Gill will take over the reigns of a Kansas program in better shape from a support and talent standpoint than possibly any coach in it's history. He has a chance to develop the program further into a consistent winner and leave his name and stamp on a program looking for sustained success.
Whether you agree or disagree with the hire right now, the reality is Gill will be judged ultimately by the results on the field. What Gill brings to the table in terms of W's and L's will far outweigh who else was rumored to be in the mix for this job early on. Wherever you stand, it's time to throw your support behind Coach Gill, his staff and as always the players in the Crimson and Blue.
Time for the next chapter in Kansas football. I have to admit, I'm excited to see this one play out. Turner Gill, Head Football Coach at the University of Kansas, Rock Chalk Jayhawk!!

Alright!
Welcome to KU, HFCTG!!! I’m excited to see how this plays out. We definitely need someone out there nailing down recruits and what not before they all leave.
Most of all, I’m just thrilled to have this settled. It was getting a bit ridiculous.
Operation 40-0 is a go. Proceed to target.
very happy...
to have this resolved…hit the ground running this week, get the staff in place, meet the current players and hit the recruiting trail. Happy Holidays Coach.
Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.
Congratulations on the hire.
I think hiring Gill is a homerun for you guys. He can drive his players like very few coaches can. He did a masterful job of winning at a university who really didn’t expect much out of him. If he could win with the lack of talent he had at Buffalo, he will surely be great at a school with the resources of Kansas.
Once again, congratulations. I’ll see you in the fall.

I'm anxious to see how he does...
I think Gill provides Kansas with a completely fresh start from the Mangino era and you can be sure it was needed in a big way by the players. If Gill is able to motivate as well as you say, Kansas will be in good hands. Thanks for the kind words.

Me too...
I was really rooting for Gill to get the NU job when Pelini was hired. I understand why the university went the other way, but I was pulling for him. It’s going to suck rooting against him, even if it is just one week a year.

It's easy for Bugeaters to congratulate us...
After all, they passed on Turner Gill not once, but twice.
They’re definitely not shaking in their boots today in Lincoln.
Who's next?
you've said that before
And I provided good reasons why both times were not because Gill was an inferior coach.
by DCJayhawk0208 on Dec 13, 2009 11:03 AM CST up reply actions
Yup
But that doesn’t change the fact: one of our conference rivals passed on their home boy not once but twice. It’s a red flag (no pun intended).
Who's next?
interesting thought
Grant Wistrom as defensive line coach?
Not a lot of coaching experience (three seasons as assistant coach at Parkview High in Springfield, MO), but a solid pro career and obviously an amazing college career at Nebraska.
Is that a random thought or something you've read?
Personally with Gill being pretty young as a head man and his only experience being Buffalo, I’d like to see him surround himself with some experienced guys as assistants. As the saying goes…surround yourself with great people and you will be successful.

I’d like to see experienced guys around him, but I’d LOVE to see Wistrom on the staff.

and
I am very, very happy for Coach Gill. As a native Nebraskan, most of my football memories involved either Gill as a player (I was very, VERY young) or as a coach. KU hired a good man and a good coach. Hopefully, with the opportunity, he’ll be a great coach.
another good point..."a good man"
we need this right now. It wasn’t exactly a great year from a PR standpoint for Kansas football. Fights with the bball team, players coming out of the woodwork to bash the coach. It really made it look like things weren’t really on the up and up. I was very hopeful that whoever came in would be able to remain below the radar in that respect.
Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.
Gill is the epitome of class. He’s quiet, serious, and a little dry. If you want a good x’s and o’s guy who truly cares about his players and isn’t necessarily a comedian, Gill’s your guy.

After reading up on him..
I’m all in. Who the hell wants to go play football at Buffalo? Nevermind it being cold and with terrible facilities, they had no positive history.
His team set a record for points scored in school history in his first year. They had their first ever winning conference season in his second year. They went to their 1st bowl in his 3rd year.
Not to mention he was the position coach for two guys named Tommie Frazier and Eric Crouch.

There is a quote from a player parent on the slant...
rather long but one part REALLY stands out to me…
basically says, Gill will give players a chance to play and coaches a chance to coach.
Implying that with the last coach, that wasn’t always the case. I’ve heard more than once that Mangino sometimes probably stood in the way of success. There are guys on the team you will see next year and say…“where the hell was he all these years.” Some may have improved in the offseason, but many are going to be guys that just weren’t given the right opportunity or held back for whatever reason.

I'd say this...
might put Quigley and Max O back in the mix for one more season. Both had planned to leave if Mangino was around but both have been quoted saying they might pursue the extra year with the right coach.

he can petition for a medical redshirt...injuries early in his career.
he may or may not get it, but there had always been talk of him doing it. Things going the way they did this year he had clearly chosen to move on as he participated in senior day, but now things are a little different.

So glad everyone here is sane about this.
There’s already a lot of sniping and whining about the hire elsewhere. I think a lot of our fans got a little ahead of themselves with all this Harbaugh/Tuberville/Belechick stuff.
I’m excited about this.

Unnecessary pessimism might be one of the most misguided uses of anyone’s time. Right now there is nothing that promises he’ll be successful, but there also is nothing promising he won’t be. Let it play out and enjoy the ride.

Maybe he’s a mean man and will tell some player something he didn’t want to hear.
It seems Bill Belichick is a Romer disciple as well.
You're correct.
NO ONE out there knows how things will end up.
What we DO know is that our AD has rolled the dice. Any head coaching hire is a gamble. But compared to other candidates this one appears to be the biggest risk of all.
And THATs why most people are upset about this hire. Many people had expected less of a gamble and more of a sure-thing.
We’ve gambled before on a 1AA head coach (Allen).
We’ve gambled before on a BCS conference assistant coach (Mangino).
We’ve even gambled before on a MAC conference head coach (Mason).
I think a lot of people are tired of gambling. I know I am.
But some of the venom is ridiculous too. Coach Gill was not my first choice. I have doubts about his ability to succeed in the Big 12. But I’ll support him.
Who's next?
I think that's a fair assesment...
You have to admit though that Gill has the potential to be here for a good amount of years should things work out well for him. Then maybe we won’t have to gamble with the next go around.
If it doesn’t happen though, we might be looking at moving toward even bigger gambles once again.
Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.
Gambling
South Carolina made perhaps the “safest” hiring choice this decade- bringing in a National Championship winning, megastar coach in Steve Spurrier. How has that worked out for them? They’re still a middling SEC team that hardly even cracks the Top 25.
There’s no such thing as a sure-thing, no matter what the coach’s track record is, and every coach is a roll of the dice.

Hey I'm liking this
there are a lot of question marks but I think there would’ve been no matter who we hired.
I like his youth and the fact that we’ve hired a minority coach. There is no doubt in my mind that that can help with recruiting at some points. It’s obviously not a winning factor but it could be important to some kids.
Welcome to the Jayhawk family Gil, may you wish you’d always been one.
by I need more Esteban on Dec 12, 2009 5:54 PM CST reply actions
It's definitely not an unimportant point.
Obviously the fact that he’s an African-American doesn’t guarantee anything (see Ron Prince), but you’re right that if it is a factor for some kids, it couldn’t hurt having the only minority coach in the Big 12.
You will have the only minority "Head Coach" in the Big 12

Ruffin...
that guy cracks me up…but he does get it done, just looks a little funny seeing an older, larger guy jump around on the sidelines like Will Muschamp.
Also I don’t think Gill is that type of coach, he is one that players really get behind…but it isn’t based on jumping around and slapping hands on the sideline. It’s a calmer approach but he’s effective nonetheless. Big change from our last guy who stomped players into the ground and destroyed their will.

I think we should take a page from "THE U" playbook...

but I’d have to think he is. It kinda just dawned on me that he’s a minority, even though I of course knew he was African-American. Weird.

You say…“there are a lot of question marks but I think there would’ve been no matter who we hired.”
That is 100% true, As our Missouri friend BestoftheWest discussed in comparing recruiting to a coaching search, you try and get the best you can but in the end nothing is a guarantee.

Anybody know
what his salary was at Buffalo? Any guess as to what the salary will be here? I have a hunch it might be significantly less than what Mangino was making (maybe in the $1.5 million range), at least to begin with, but with any modicum of success, he’ll get an extension and a pay raise, I suspect.
Operation 40-0 is a go. Proceed to target.
I’m not certain it’d be that high even. The good news is, we know that if he succeeds Lew will back up the Brinks truck to pay.

Coaches Salaries In 2009
Turner Gill made $265,000…Good for #110 out of all college coaches.
Man-gee-I-can’t-eat-just-one-o made 2.3 million…Good for #16.
Gary Pinkel makes 2.5 million
Bo Pelini at Nebraska only made 1.8 million
Candidates on the radar with KU:
Houston Nutt – 2.5 million
Randy Edsall – 1.5
Skip Holtz – 1.1
Jim Harbaugh – 1.0 (but their AD claims they inked an extension a few weeks ago)
Tim Brewster – 1.0
Larry Fedora – 800K
Kevin Sumlin – 700K
Butch Jones – 275K

but now im extremely excited for football next year… what do you think is goin through kale pick’s head? turner gil mentoring him… cant wait!!
I'm sure Pick is probably pleased...
not just because Gill has coached some great running quarterbacks, but also because his offense right now is pretty balanced. A balanced offense can be a QB’s best friend.
Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.
Not even just Pick
But it seems all our qbs are dual threat types. Its too bad Jacoby Walker split, Gill would be perfect for him as well
I'm sure after recruits see what Pick does
there will be plenty more to take his spot

However, he’s not that young is he? I thought I heard 47 on the radio.

age is a matter of perspective...

Haha
Not just here, but almost everywhere refers to him as a young head coach. I don’t know the ages of various coaches around the country and I’m sure he’s younger than the vast majority. Young coach to me though is someone around 30-35, think Pastner at Memphis.
I used to work with an old man that told me- Son, every workplace has a dumbass. If you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.
Walter Camp Coach of the Year...to this?
Gill was 5-7 this year in the MAC this year. Mark Mangino was 5-7 in the Big 12.
Not saying he can’t be a good coach, but I am still skeptical and not pleased how the Mangino situation ended.
Gill sounds like a players coach. I remember when the Kansas City Chiefs hired a players coach…his name was Herm Edwards and he ran the franchise into the ground and his players ran rampant.
Technically,
Mangino was 1-7 in the Big XII. Just sayin’…
Operation 40-0 is a go. Proceed to target.
there are different extremes in "Players coaches"
there are those that let players do as they please and are complete baffoons…see Terry Allen.
and there are those that are disciplined, but show respect and earn respect from their players accordingly.
I’m hoping Gill is the second kind. From what Buffalo and Husker fans have added it seems that is likely the case. I don’t think he’s an undisciplined, players running the show type. He just finds a way to motivate players, gain respect and they play hard for him because of it. Just my perception.
Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.
don't know why he's getting compared to Mark Mangino
Was there one single pro on Buffalo’s team? I don’t know but I highly doubt it.
There are so many people comparing their records, I just don’t get it, The Mac does not get the level of players the Big 12 does so how is this even comparable?
by I need more Esteban on Dec 12, 2009 6:52 PM CST up reply actions
I agree with this.
Can’t be compared. Completely different situations, compare them after five years.
I used to work with an old man that told me- Son, every workplace has a dumbass. If you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.
I just feel like there were more qualified applicants out there...
…but I knew Lew would never hire the big name guy. Lew wanted to go against the grain. The most logical choice would have been Tuberville but that wouldn’t make Lew look like a genius if it worked out. This hire will.
A head coach is only as good as his assistants — this is one of Gill’s weaknesses in my opinion. I really thought Tuberville was the right man for the job, but then again I liked Mangino as a coach and my opinion seems to be in the minority in that regard.
hard to say
because we really don’t know who is going to stay or go. Would like to see a few current assistants stay on board.
by I need more Esteban on Dec 12, 2009 7:07 PM CST up reply actions
You have to remember that you’re a basketball school. Tubberville, Nutt and Fulmer were not going to be satisfied playing second fiddle anywhere. Plus I don’t know that KU could afford the $2.5million+ price tags attached to each of them after buying out Mangino.
He went 5-7 at BUFFALO a year after he lost an NFL quarterback and half of his defense. Mangino got figured out. He was great for 3 years and then fell flat on his face. Which isn’t ok when you have essentially the same starters in years 3 and 4. Gill could have just as easily gone 9-3 this year had his team had 21 more points of offensive talent.
Hang 'em!!!
by Screwface on Dec 12, 2009 9:02 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
Is that why Tuberville was openly campaigning for the job?
I’m excited for the Turner Gill Era as anyone. But you seem to be disparaging our football program, when I have no real idea why. We’re not a Tier 1 football school (oh God not this again!), but it’s not like we’re Nebraska basketball or anything- that Orange Bowl season didn’t come out of thin air- it came from a newfound financial committment towards creating a competitive football program.
Head coaches didn’t “figure out” Mangino- his players quit on him because he was a major league a-hole. When the players actually stood up at the end of the year and played inspired football because they were facing their hated rival, they played a damn good game- good enough to have won most of the other games on their schedule.
If your school had a basketball program with KU’s history, potential, and national relevance, you’d be a “basketball school,” too. But that doesn’t create some kind of magical karmic block that prevents your football team from also being successful. And a lot of coaches, including Tommy Tuberville, realized this, and hoped to be interviewed for the head coach position.

Herm
This is such a terrible comparison, IMO. First of all, college and pros are COMPLETELY different animals. Pete Carroll was known as a “players coach” and didn’t do great in the NFL (although he did make the playoffs three straight years), but when he went to college he was able to build a national powerhouse.
Second of all, have Haley and Pioli really done any better than Herm did? I don’t care if the Chiefs had Bill Belichek the last couple years, there simply isn’t enough talent on that team to have a winning record. At least Herm was able to determine that and start a youth movement that has produced some nice pieces. Yes, tearing down the Chiefs was, and continues to be, a very painful process. But the only way they’ll be able to build anything great was by starting from the ground up.

Really excited to see how Gill recruits
I think with his success as a player, youthfulness and reputation, maybe even play the race card (I hate to do it sorry) he can bring in some very exciting athletes.
This is what I hoped for at the start
but then so many names started being thrown into the pot that I got caught up on some of the “bigger names.” I honestly don’t think there was a single candidate that wasn’t worthy of the job, not one that we wouldn’t be excited about.
I think in the end this is the best for the program.
Let’s go, Turner Gill! Rock Chalk!
Defending the Cassel since 2009
I was telling people a week ago...
Jim Harbaugh and Tommy Tuberville were the short term sexy picks; I think Turner Gill is the long term solution with the biggest upside. In this era of instant gratification, it is interesting that KU actually chose the long term vision rather than the quick fix.
Good hire for the Jayhawks
everybody has to remember he is a Big 12 guy he was an assistant at Nebraska in the 90’s, he knows where to recruit. The Big 12 North should be exciting in the near future
According to an ESPN bio on him...
Gill was known as “one of the best recruiters in the country” while he was an assistant at Nebraska. Let’s hope that shows up for us!

i think we have to temper expectations there a little bit
(yet hope for the very best, of course)….It’s much easier to be “one of the best recruiters in the country” when your at a perennial powerhouse. of course he’ll be a good recruiter, but it takes time to build your program, even for the best.

DC...
Carl Torbush/per Whitlock for whatever that’s worth…looks like we may not end up retaining anyone.
Whitlock also says we will see two other experienced staff members added with head coaching experience. Claims Lew hired Gill because he showed an ability to gain commitments from some very impressive assistant coaches and coordinators to be members of his staff.

I don't want any of these frickin bugeaters!!!!
Those assholes repeatedly ran the score up on us. And the first chance they get they will go running back to Lincoln. We hire a staff full of bugeaters and we’ll end up being the coaching farm club for NU.
I’m not ok with that.
Who's next?
I think the jump to Lincoln thing is unlikely.
I used to work with an old man that told me- Son, every workplace has a dumbass. If you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.
What's with the "bugeaters" thing?
I never saw the explanation for that…

That was the nickname for NU football
back in the late 1800’s. It wasn’t an insulting name other schools called them, they called themselves that. Bizarre.

it was the...
original name of the Nebraska mascott back in the day. They were known as the bugeaters before the cornhuskers. Not the best at choosing names as a whole if you ask me.,

in all seriousness...
Oregon gets in a lot of doors in terms of recruiting, you’d think Scott would have some connections as a result of his time there.

very true
He also spent some time at Northern Iowa. Don’t know if that was a good thing or not.
I’d forgotten he was a transfer nonplayer on the 1995 National Championship team.
Which means that if the OC is who the rumors are, between him, Gill and Frost, there are five national championships as players or coaches on our staff. That’s pretty impressive.

He only made $265,000
I sure hope this wasn’t a case of Lew going cheap b/c he fucked up the Mangino situation (he did), paid him a shitload of money (who knows but possible) then went cheap with the coaching hire b/c there’s no money in the budget.

I'm convinced there is no money in the budget.
I’m not saying that’s why Gill was hired, but all these people that expected us to pay huge salaries……we just renovated our stadium, built football facilities, renovated Allen, committed to building the Olympic complex……the bank accounts a little thin these days.
Who's next?
well, then
he shouldn’t have signed Mangino to a contract with such a large buyout, then compounded it by boxing himself in where he had to fire Mangino. now we’re going Wal-Mart with our coaching hire.
I mean, I’m sorry but we hired a guy that was 20-30 at a lower level of football, so what indication is there that he is going to have ANY success here? The point I’m making is that there were, on the surface, much more qualified candidates. The man desperately wanted the job. So why do you not go after some of the more attractive candidates (Tuberville, Holtz, Fedora) and then come back to Gill if those guys turn it down?
I am not saying I’m not rooting for the guy, but THIS is the best we could do? Lew needed to hit a home run and he took a base on balls with the pitcher coming up.

maybe everyone else did turn it down?

true,
and we really don’t know. but wasn’t the scuttlebutt that Tuberville was really interested? i mean, he did go after harbaugh first, which I think was the correct move. but Gill? I just don’t understand what he has done to deserve the job. he’s had one good year. I can’t imagine that tuberville, holtz, sumlin, fedora, and fulmer ALL turned the job down.
God damn it!!! the more I think about it the more I just hate this move.

Look…Gill is bringing in two experience coordinators who have been successful with some big time talent. I’ve also heard he is going to look at keeping some of the current staff, hopefully some combination of the interim guys. If Gill can surround himself with great people I think he’ll put Kansas in a great position to turn the page from our recent fiasco with Mangino.
As far as Tuberville, Holtz, Sumlin Fedora and Fulmer I don’t think Lew wanted to go with a older coach who was out of the game in Tuberville or Fulmer. Tuberville reportedly didn’t even interview…just lobbying in the media to get his name out there for jobs. No one else seems interested in him either.
As far as Sumlin, Fedora and Holtz…I think Sumlin and Holtz interviewed but not Fedora. I’m guessing Lew didn’t see a whole lot of difference between Gill and Sumlin as there really isn’t in terms of head coaching experience. Holtz is the one I was expecting and the one I am a little surprised as…but does he really excite the fanbase either?

IDK
Holtz has had them in several bowl games in a row. He was the better alternative from my perspective.
But, you are right…I like the coordinators he’s supposedly bringing in. I think that’s going to be a huge key to his success, to surround himself with great assistants.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m behind it and I want him to succeed obviously. And really, what do I know-I was a huge fan of Jelani Janisse when we brought him in.

Really?
I thought that job was already Bud Fox’s the day Beamer decides to call it a career.
Who's next?
Bud Foster...?
but yes I believe he is technically the coach in waiting for that one.

I liked the idea of Holtz too

Turner Gill will make a handsome salary
This has nothing to do with Mangino’s buyout. The only reason Mangino was making what he did was to clearly indicate to the nation that KU was serious about its football program. You send out the message with new facilities, better amenities, and the fact you are more than competitive when it comes to compensation. Hell, that has been the overall commitment to KU Athletics, Inc. over the last 8 years. Go back and look what Roy was making before heading to NC. You might actually see one of the biggest underlying reasons why he bolted.
College sports has become an even bigger business. They will pay Gill and then reward him as a result of successes, just like they did with Mangino. The difference here – Gill will probably help raise all the money he will be paid through alumni and football backer functions.
Turner and assistants
I for one am happy to see resolution. Remeber Turner Gil had nothing to work with in Buffalo and probably was never going to help his resume. I am ecstatic about a Chuck Long hire. This man will create great QBs and provide good offnesive direction. Lets hit the recruiting trail and see what these guys can do. I am anxious for next season and everybody should blog Whitlocks column for his continuing negativity towards Gil.
Jason Whitlock being negative?
Surely you jest.

the apparent Carl Torbush hire...
looks to be a great one as well. That guy put some great players into the NFL off of his defenses. Julius Peppers, Greg Ellis and Dre Bly all played or were recruited by Torbush.

so was
Ryan Sims.

Denver
I’m in no position to ask for anything, but a blog on our assistant coaches, once confirmed, would be awesome. Just like the blogs on all the coaching candidates….. I learned a ton.
Thanks as always.
Who's next?
Gill Hiring
I sure hope that Gill wasn’t Perkin’s knee jerk reaction after being turned down by Harbaugh. I was impressed with the new OC and DC he will bring with him. It will be interesting to see wha type of offense Chuck Long will brng with him. Big question still remains if his staff can recruit. There is a huge job in just trying to keep the Mangino recruits. I’m also not sure if Perkin’s pick will energize the big $$$$$ alumni. I’m just not sure if Perkin’s bet to bring down Mangino will bring any positive change with the Hawks in the next 4 years.
FOMO...welcome...
I’m sure we’ll start hearing things about committed recruits this week. Dave Clark the 4* JUCO corner has been reported as reaffirming since the Gill hire according to the Slant. That’s good news.

1-7 probably didn't help recruiting either
Finishing last in the Big XII North when you were supposed to contend for the title, perhaps the frontrunner (I say perhaps but know they should have clearly been the favorite)? College football signing day isn’t until February. How many recruits were going to stay after watching all the bowls and realizing the team they had orally committed to was no where to be seen? I am sure any opposing program that would be interested in our recruits would have pointed that out between now and then.
