HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
Tonight, the college basketball season kicks off for real, with a bizarre Roy Williams/ Isiah Thomas matchup that neither team seems to want to play. I know our boys still have a couple of days until they get going for real, but now seems as good a time as any to get back into "basketball mode" and start discussing what we think will happen this year in college hoops.
Let's make this thread open to anything you would like to talk about for the college basketball scene- either about the Jayhawks in particular, or more of the national picture. Only rule: leave talking about football at the door. Yes, we all still support the football team, and are hoping for a bowl, and are worried about our coaching staff, yadda yadda yadda. There's plenty of other places on RCT to discuss that stuff over and over again.
Possible Topics of discussion:
1. What team out there scares you the most?
2. Who is the best freshman in the country this year?
3. What mid-major do you like to make a run? What one is overrated?
4. Who is one team that nobody is talking about right now that will become a major storyline as the season progresses? Who is being talked about way too much right now, and is destined to fail?
5. Who is your second favorite college basketball team? Why?
6. With Hansborough no longer around, who becomes the most hated player in the game?
We all know that it hasn't been the greatest of times for KU this fall. But as the great poet Bono once wrote, "everything changes on New Year's Day." Also, when he said, "I will be with you again," I like to believe he was talking about the Final Four.
ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK!!!

Your unbridled enthusiasm makes me all giddy inside.
Only thing is that I’m going to miss both the exhibition games, and 4 of the first 5 regular season games due to work. FML. But, after that, I think only the Tennessee and misery games are scheduled on work days, so I will be sure and get those off.
This is going to be a great, fun year. Hopefully we can get that SlowDance fucker back for it…..

It just occured to me
that I have re-begun my habit of logging onto RCT and commenting on every thread on the front page and sidebar.
May the juggernaut known as RCT be revved back up and get ready to set new highs for OGT’s.
SO. PUMPED.
FUCK. YES.

Oh yeah.
I’m stoked for basketball season. Loaded with pictures and excited to see us win a championship.
I thought you knew that algebra was all razzamatazz. A Globetrotter always saves the good algebra for the final minutes.

Haven't done a whole lot of reading or research on the teams for the upcoming season.
So the discussion questions will have to wait a week or two before I can say anything about them. The only thing I am sure of is the Jayhawks will be the most talented and best team in the Big 12. Texas and maybe another school or two could give them fits on one night, but over the course of the season it won’t happen.
Bring on Michigan State.
I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.
Michigan St and NC
as well as Kentucky are the ones that worry me….however our team’s not bad either.
I still like Carolina, even after Roy-gate. For some reason I’ve always also liked Xavier…I think they had a crazy run in the tournament one year and always seem to have a solid team.
Can’t stand Louisville (the Pitino version, what a scumbag, even before the affair stuff), Duke obviously, Michigan St (a bunch of football players playing basketball), and Illinois-Bruce Weber seems slimy to me.

I can't stand the entire big10 in general in hoops
Except Wisconsin who I root for since my parents went there and grew up a badger fan. I honestly am not scared by any games. I don’t think our team is going undefeated so a few loses here and there are going to happen. Its not football we can drop a few and still get a one seed in the tourny and a sixth strait title. So I’d say instead of scared I’m excited to see our team grow and come together and turn into assassins come tourny time.
I just hope we don’t lose to KSU so we don’t have to see the cats have another we beat KU orgy and storm the court (which could lead to an injury to one of our players), or Mizzou because well… its mizzou.
Player I hate the Most: Kyle Singler. Supreme douche that has been under-the-radar due to the constant knob-slobbing of Tyler.
Under the Radar/ Midmajor I like: San Diego State. Jeff Fischer can still coach, and he’s building something out there. Just landed California Mr. Basketball for this season- he has to be pretty decent, right?
Best Freshman: Derrick Favors. Big men tend to come in and make more of an immediate impact, IMO. This kid has 9 foot wingspan, which is just absurd. He’s a natural shotblocker and good rebounder, both skills that translate well to the college game. Plus he has a nice touch from the outside, and he’ll be on a team at Ga Tech that’s going to let him play all the minutes he wants. Bold Prediction: He’ll be the #1 pick in the draft next year.
UNC doesn’t bother me, because we can play at their tempo without making lots of stupid mistakes, unlike 99% of the rest of the teams in college basketball. Michigan State could give us trouble, since a grind it out style can always keep things close. However, we probably should have beat them last year, and we’re waaaaaay more talented this year.
Getting the chance to play Kentucky excites me, but the possibility of losing scares me. I really feel like that game this year could tip the scales for recruiting wars for the next several years.

I really should've posted before KGRTC above
because most of mine mirrors his. Weird.
1. The team that scares me most is probably Kentucky or Michigan St. Of course, neither of those teams is on our schedule, so I’ll go with two that are: Tennessee and Texas. Texas is pretty obvious, I suppose, and probably the only game on the schedule I give us as low as a 50/50 shot at winning. Tennessee because it’s on the road and I expect that to be a difficult place to play, especially if Pat Summit is wearing her Tennessee cheerleader’s uniform. Yow.
2. Best freshman will be, in my opinion, Derrick Favors. Damn you, KGRTC! Yeah, I think he’s a freak athlete with the body of a 5-yr pro, as opposed to a college freshman. Of course, all the hype will go to Wall, and probably not without some merit. I just can’t stand the thought of conceding something to Kentucky right now.
3. Mid-major run? Probably go with Butler, but I don’t feel strongly about it. They’ve got a strong nucleus, to be sure, but they’re ranked in the top-10 already, so it’s not likely they’ll over-achieve (unless they make it to the Final Four, which I highly doubt will happen).
4. Team no one is talking about that will be very good? I’ll stay in the Big XII and say Iowa State. With Brackins and Co., they’re going to be a tough beat for anybody, including KU. I like Greg McDermott a lot, too, and think he’s an excellent coach. Team that’s ranked too high…I’ll go with UNC, though I think they’ll be very good. They’ve got a pretty murderous schedule and they’ll likely lose a few games in the non-conference, which will drop their ranking. That’s a really young team with a lot of talent, but they don’t shoot the 3 particularly well, and they just don’t have a lot of experience. I could see them making it to the Sweet 16, but I’m not sure they win the ACC or finish in the top 10 in the polls.
5. 2nd favorite team…well, 6 years ago, I would have said UNC easily. For obvious reasons, they took a big hit in my book there for a while, but I think I’m ready to move on. I grew up in Minnesota, so I have cheered for the Golden Gophers for a long time, and it seems like Tubby Smith has that team on a steep upward trajectory, which pleases me. I’ll say Minnesota, I guess.
6. Again, I hate to steal from KGRTC, but Kyle Singler would have to be this years’ most hated player. If he had jumped to the NBA, it would’ve been his teammate Jon Scheyer. I don’t know what it is, but prominent white players on Tobacco Road just get the ire of the rest of college basketball fans. I can’t explain it. Darkhorse candidate…Cole Aldrich. Just sayin’. Really darkhorse…John Wall. Lots of UK haters out there right now, not that their insufferable fan base makes it particularly difficult…
I know you didn’t ask, but I’ll give you my final four predictions too:
KU, Villanova, Texas, Michigan St.
Championship game: KU v. Michigan St.
Champion: KU (I’ll be the first to admit it…I’m a homer, and proudly so. It sure helps when you’ve actually got the best team.)
Cinderella team (wait for it…): Isaiah Thomas & FIU
It's rather ironic that people will actually have to pay money to see Michael Moore's new Anti-Capitalism film, don't you think?
Haha FIU
They put up a fight against UNC last night for a bit. I’d say thats not a bad darkhorse pick…
shoot first
The only thing that really scares me about this season (after watching one preseason game and reading the KUSports.com story about Cole) is that our guards are going to be so intent on shooting that they’re going to ignore our All-American center. It seems stupid that anyone would forget about Cole, but with three guards who love to score and a 4 (pick-a-Morris) who prefers to shoot threes, I worry that Cole isn’t going to see the ball enough.
If we play smart ball, Michigan State scares me. That’s it. Texas plays fairly selfish basketball. And Kentucky will be the definition of selfish basketball. And if we’re playing team ball, we’ll own any team that has five scorers.
Coaches on the Hot Seat?
Don’t see anybody in too much danger in the Big 12, other than Pat Knight at Tech. Not sure what kind of expectations aTm has for their program long-term- would it be completely crazy if they talked about bringing Gillespie back if they struggle this year?
Also, Oregon’s coach has to be feeling the pressure. How do you go from Elite 8 to 8 wins in two seasons? If Georgetown continues to backslide, how long will alumni put up with it, given his pedigree?
by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Nov 11, 2009 3:15 PM CST reply actions
Yes it would. re:Gillespie
After his last run-in with the law, I’ll be shocked if he’s ever a head coach at the D1 level again. Assistant NBA or D-League is probably his future in basketball.
Pat Knight is an interesting case, definitely not trending upwards but he’s also in a horrible spot. Hell, Leach has to act like an idiot to get people to notice their top 25 football program. Can you imagine trying to bring kids to Lubbock for basketball?
I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.
Knight
He’s gotta find a way to break free from his Dad’s shadow. Take the good from Bobby (excellent teacher, the motion offense, runs a clean program), but ditch the bad (obvious). Ideally, he becomes a version of his father more suited to modern times- one kids can relate to more (the old screaming ways don’t work anymore), and therefore a better recruiter.
If he can’t find his own voice, he’ll be nothing more than a pale imitation of his father.

Georgetown isn't too far removed from an elite 8 appearance
So I think it would take at least two more poor seasons for JTIII to be on the hotseat. Oregon has had to deal with two programs in the North vastly improving (Washington, Wazzu), Gonzaga continuing to land NW top talent, and a resurgence at Oregon State under Michelle Obama’s brother (can’t remember his name sorry). Seems like they are taking a backseat in that area of schools in terms of talent and success.
Gillespe has Tyrone WIllingham syndrome written all over him. Coach finds success at mid-level program, takes a shot at a big league program, fired due to an insane fan bases expectations but can’t recover going back to the mid-upper mid level ball with a “rebuilding” team (yes I have dubbed this Tyrone Willingham syndrome). I think Gillespe’s strongest trait was that Mangino esque ability to find hidden talent. He quickly upgraded AandM by finding good players, and I don’t have numbers but I don’t remember Acie Law and co all being terribly high recruits but feel free to correct me if I am wrong.
Pat Knight and Tech have to deal with the same problem Oregon is facing. The teams it recruits with locally are enjoying more success and talent. Tech isn’t going to get kids nationally, they need to start digging all over Texas and get some talent.
In hoops coaching, especially when comparing to football, its easier to get it turned around. One to two good recruiting classes can infuse you quickly with talent and wins. Look at what adding Macnamara and Carmelo “Candybar” Anthony did for Memphis (shudders) or Mike Conley and Greg “Grandpapa” Oden as frosh for Ohio State. There is always hope if you can grab a few good young players, especially if they show promise and you are given the “young talented team will do next year” get out of jail free card.
Oops in that last post I meant Carmelo and Macnamara did for Syracuse not Memphis
Not sure why I put memphis… confused our last two NC game opponents I suppose
True about grabbing a good class and hanging on, but it also shows that
it is really hard for those fringe schools to stay at the top. Hell, look at Florida. Billy D won two in a row and they’ve been treading water since.
Also think Syracuse is wrong for your discussion, they were never National Champs elite but they have been damn good for a long, long time.
I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.
True Cuse was a powerhouse for a long time
But my point stands, if you look at their team before those two freshman. They didn’t even make the tournament the year before (NIT final 4). Adding those two frosh to an NIT team turned them into national champions.
Agreed, but they weren't comparable to Texas Tech.
Off the top of my head, Ohio State maybe. But they’re still a much better recruiting area than Lubbock. Basketball crazy Kentucky and Indiana not far away. Knight has his hands full at Tech and I’m not sure they’d even get anyone that has a better chance than him at sneaking in a few appearances here and there. Nebraska is a similar situation, as was K-State. Maybe they do have to can him when the next Huggins becomes available.
How long until Pitino wears out his welcome in Louisville, one more screw-up?
I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.
Yeah its not comparable in terms of national prestige
I just meant that you can take a non-tourny team and make them very dangerous adding one or two stud players.
It’ll be hard to axe Pitino when he is winning like he is. I don’t think Louisville’s AD has the balls to can him like Indiana’s AD (May he RIP) canned Knight. Personally I can’t stand Pitino, he is a slime ball and the allegations this past summer didn’t surprise me one bit. He is also such a douche bag in his interviews, did you see the one he did with Andy Katz? What a sleaze.
Pitino's probably got a lot of rope left, but I'd imagine it did get a little shorter this off-season.
But I do think it will take a coach like Huggins to ever get close to bringing Tech to an upper level. Someone that has shown success in the past but does just enough things to scare away legitimately good programs.
I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.
Haha so like Knight again
That seemed to be where he was at after Indiana. I’m trying to think of those second chance type guys.
What about Gillespe? He turned around A&M, can he do it again in Lubbock with his success in Texas. That’d be a really interesting story if that ever happened?
It would, but don't forget about his last run-in with the law.
He might actually be a decent candidate. Give Pat Knight a few more years of suck and then maybe they’ll be able to say “Billy G has learned from his mistakes and we’re proud to give him a chance”.
I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.
Florida
That’s been a really under-the-radar story, in my book. You’ve got a big-time athletic department, great weather/location, you’ve just won back-to-back national championships… and you can’t even get back to the tournament? What the heck happened there?
Was some assistant on those teams really running the show for Billy D? Or was it just the right blend of players at the end of the “jump straight from high school to the pros” era? Seems like their recruits have been vastly overrated ever since their championships, except for Speights.
Of course, as long as Urban and Tim are rolling through opponents, I doubt anyone in Gainesville will notice or care.

Its pretty shocking
KU showed how its done, have a few talented players with experience from the title run carry the team next year while young guys get invaluable PT, make the tourny and try to make some noise, then gear up for another run the next year.
Florida’s latest struggles are ridiculous. Donovan’s program is falling apart, they flat out don’t have talent. Not only is it a great location, big budget program fresh off two titles, but their players all got drafted and a few have gotten big NBA minutes (Horford, Noah). That alone should help a recruit say “hey I might be a 3-4 year guy, but this coach can help me get a shot at making the league.”
Looks like Billy should have jumped to the NBA when he had the chance. Was that (leaving, then coming back) one of the issues that got the ball rolling? Who knows. But you’d think in the SEC where 8 out of the 12 teams are aweful and you have two strait titles, it’d be easier to keep the talent rolling in.
Kentucky Growing Pains Already Showing....
Needed a buzzer beater from Wall tonight to beat Miami (OH)… who lost by 11 to TOWSON in their first game. Ouch.
