Sunflower Showdown 2009 Open Game Thread

Kansas Jayhawks at Kansas St. Wildcats, Nov 7, 2009 11:30 AM CST

Photo

Kickoff is right about a half an hour away in Manhattan and I'm a little bit jittery right now.  Good news is despite the Versus v Directv dispute I have found a place around the corner from my house that will be carrying the game.  Bad news is I won't be here for the OGT, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't be!!!

First up a couple quick links for potential online game feeds:

As far as this game, Bill Snyder returns to the Sunflower Showdown after an absence that saw his once proud program turned league joke.  Word is he's been preparing for this one as far back as last year while sitting in a club suite in Lawrence watching the Wildcats get torn apart by the Jayhawks in 2008.  Snyder has improved the team and Kansas is at a point of no return.  Mangino v Snyder, one team is going comes out of this one with a potentially huge boost to the season, while the other might find itself fading to the back of the Big12 North title hunt in 2009.

Big game in the state of Kansas.  Big implications, let's get things started shall we.  Rock Chalk and enjoy!!

Seems pretty pointless.

We dump Teahen for cheaper and slightly younger guys, then send some money to the Sox to make up for that. Neither of these guys fill holes really, so I think it sets up the next move, which I hope will actually make us better or get some legitimate prospects.

Well, so far so good. And I’ll take the penalty, too.

Bottom line, here, I think, is that Todd needs to get outside of the pocket. If he can get protection, eventually the receivers will get open.

That's for sure

Reesing’s belief in his ability to get out of jams in the pocket kills yards when he should throw it away on occasion. Losing a down is far better than losing 10 yards.

by Warden11 on Nov 7, 2009 11:51 AM CST up reply actions

Agreed, but love the play.

The run-fake led to one on one coverage deep against Dez and forced the penalty.

by hunter s. royal on Nov 7, 2009 11:52 AM CST up reply actions

the option

I grew up in Nebraska, watching Frazier, Frost and Crouch running the option. These pitches are so ugly, and really, really early. Running them to the narrow side every time is rather fruitless.

by PDXJayhawk on Nov 7, 2009 11:51 AM CST reply actions

Yep.

It’s basically like running a slow developing toss that puts the RB on the corner with no choice to cut back.

There’ve been many questions wondering why they even try to run the option this year.

I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.

by Warden11 on Nov 7, 2009 11:52 AM CST up reply actions

exactly

You win that play by forcing the linebacker or d-back decide who to cover. You can’t do that when you take three steps and pitch every single time.

by PDXJayhawk on Nov 7, 2009 11:54 AM CST up reply actions

It's been awful this year.

Particularly with Reesing hurt, they’ve got to stop running them.

by Warden11 on Nov 7, 2009 11:54 AM CST reply actions

Disturbing stuff again.

We’re moving the ball great on offense, but effing up when we get close to scoring. No clue why Reesing threw that. It was first down, and he had no pressure on him.

by hunter s. royal on Nov 7, 2009 11:56 AM CST up reply actions

You're certainly correct on the corner getting the pick

if the safety didn’t. That pass by Todd looks even worse when they replay it.

Question for Debate:

If Todd keeps sucking, do you bench him? What does Mangino “owe” Todd Reesing?

by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Nov 7, 2009 12:51 PM CST reply actions

I'm in the camp of Mangino doesn't owe him anything.

The question is always- which guy gives the team the best chance to win.

by Warden11 on Nov 7, 2009 12:52 PM CST up reply actions

agreed

The coaching staff is obligated to do whatever is necessary to get the win. The question, though, is can Pick perform at a level to get us the win? Will the coaching staff limit the playbook? Will they give Pick a chance to throw?

by PDXJayhawk on Nov 7, 2009 12:54 PM CST up reply actions

Little choice.

I don’t think Pick is ready. KSU would gang up on the line of scrimmage and we couldn’t move the ball. Though KSU just scores because of another Todd turnover. Crap.

by hunter s. royal on Nov 7, 2009 12:54 PM CST up reply actions

Not sure.

Todd’s not just any quarterback. He’s probably most responsible for bringing the program out of mediocrity, which has led to improved recruiting that will allow us to hopefully maintain a high level of play.

by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Nov 7, 2009 12:56 PM CST up reply actions

True, but winning games will do more for recruiting than keeping in a player that is killing your chance at winning.

I don’t know enough about Pick, I’m guessing he’s not ready and from I’ve seen- he isn’t. Shitty situation right now for the Hawks.

I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.

by Warden11 on Nov 7, 2009 12:57 PM CST up reply actions

OK, granted

truth be told, Todd probably give us the best chance to win…but they’ve got to go to some different plays that are safer. Play field position and try to squeak out 10 points, and hope we can hold them.

If Todd would have just slid on those plays…

Really at this point

I think you’ve got to consider it. He is killing us. The D is balling.

I think you go to Kerry actually and play the zone read. Todd is absolutely throwing this game away. It doesn’t say Reesing on the front of the jersey, it says Kansas.

Halftime commentator:

Supports Reesing and then says all they have to is keep getting the ball to the playmakers.

That’s a whole hell of a lot easier when your qb is giving the ball to the other team.

I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.

by Warden11 on Nov 7, 2009 12:59 PM CST reply actions

The pimp on the right is a complete moron.

KSU is not stopping Reesing, he’s stopping himself. KSU has had a poor first half, and Todd has given them a lead.

by hunter s. royal on Nov 7, 2009 1:02 PM CST up reply actions

On the bright side

Areas of the team that have been problems, Mangino has been able to fix. The defense has gotten steadily better this year. The line is showing some more promise.

This season has boiled down to Reesing’s stunning decline…Mangino has gone to bowl games with three different QB. This season may be lost (who knows what happens in the 2nd half) but I trust that Mangino will get things righted overall. Really, if we get average QB play from week 5 on we are 6-2 and maybe 7-1, and leading in this game. I love Todd and will forever be indebted for what he’s given us thus far, but it’s not working right now. He’s hurting the team with his play.

I agree that Todd has a lot of equity built up, but there are 84 other guys who have busted their ass all year and deserve some reward, too.

I say start Todd in the 2nd half and if he turns it over again, you’ve got to yank him and bring in Meier or Pick. At the very minimum, you eliminate the turnovers and give us a chance to win with field position.

It’s so maddening when the O runs up and down the field with the ball and Reesing turns it over at the most critical times. Alien abduction of Todd’s brain with the substitution of Josh Freeman’s seem to be the only rational explanation.

I think Pick needs to replace Reesing. We need a spark on offense, something has to change. And Pick gets experience for next year.

Insanity is just a state of mind.

Well

Reesing at least deserves the chance to start his only game in his native Austin, IMO. And Senior Day.

Maybe

But something needs to happen on O if we’re getting to a bowl. And I just don’t know if Todd is it. I don’t know if Pick is either, but it’s looking more and more likely every game.

Give Todd Senior Day. Same results, then let Pick have a go at it.

Insanity is just a state of mind.

Good god.

What happened to our football team?

do we even get to be bowl eligible?

Where’s the win on the remaining schedule?

It's rather ironic that people will actually have to pay money to see Michael Moore's new Anti-Capitalism film, don't you think?

maybe

our football team should practice a little more rather than trying to beat the shit out of the basketball team. Just sayin.

Snyder

Is looking pretty sickly, isn’t he? Very thin and pale.

He sure kicked our ass

what a clusterfuck…reesing has killed us for four games in a row.

Yes. Yes he is.

My point was that he looks different than he used to. And Mangino doesn’t. So your comparison fails.

by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Nov 7, 2009 2:33 PM CST up reply actions

It's just so frustrating

We have no idea how good this team could be if they’d just stop beating themselves. We used to be an excellent execution team- whatever happened to that?

When you refuse to beat yourself, you give yourself a great chance to win at the college level. 2007 was a perfect example of that.

amen

im going to throw out a radical thought…bench reesing for the rest of the year, or at least start gradually giving pick more reps… I know that Mangino will never think this way, but this season is for all intents and purposes a lost cause…we may win one more and squeak into a bowl, but putting in pick for some real experience doesn’t have to change that necessarily.

todd is really dragging us down, and I think this week should have been his last shot at seeing if he can turn it around. start thinking for this year and next…maybe pick takes better care of the ball, gives the team a spark, and gives todd a chance to clear his head a bit.

AFGHGHGHGH1!!

DVR failed with 1 min left in the 1st quarter. But it looks like I saved some frustration. Sick just sick.

Lucky bastard.

I watched this one to the painful end. Reesing has simply forgotten how to play football, which clusterf**ks everything else up.
