Sunflower Showdown 2009 Open Game Thread
Kansas Jayhawks at Kansas St. Wildcats, Nov 7, 2009 11:30 AM CST
Kickoff is right about a half an hour away in Manhattan and I'm a little bit jittery right now. Good news is despite the Versus v Directv dispute I have found a place around the corner from my house that will be carrying the game. Bad news is I won't be here for the OGT, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't be!!!
First up a couple quick links for potential online game feeds:
- As Always JustinTV with a Kansas v KState Feed.
- If that doesn't work for you I'd also check ChannelSurfing as they typically have a feed as well

Rock Chalk...enjoy the game...
and let’s put the North back on notice that Kansas isn’t done quite yet.
Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.
FUCK DIRECTV.
I assumed all ween FSN would have this one, but no, of course fucking not.
Whatever. Bob Davis FTW!

It's official.

Seems pretty pointless.
We dump Teahen for cheaper and slightly younger guys, then send some money to the Sox to make up for that. Neither of these guys fill holes really, so I think it sets up the next move, which I hope will actually make us better or get some legitimate prospects.

Well, so far so good. And I’ll take the penalty, too.
Bottom line, here, I think, is that Todd needs to get outside of the pocket. If he can get protection, eventually the receivers will get open.

Good luck, fellas.

That's for sure
Reesing’s belief in his ability to get out of jams in the pocket kills yards when he should throw it away on occasion. Losing a down is far better than losing 10 yards.

the option
I grew up in Nebraska, watching Frazier, Frost and Crouch running the option. These pitches are so ugly, and really, really early. Running them to the narrow side every time is rather fruitless.
Yep.
It’s basically like running a slow developing toss that puts the RB on the corner with no choice to cut back.
There’ve been many questions wondering why they even try to run the option this year.
I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.
exactly
You win that play by forcing the linebacker or d-back decide who to cover. You can’t do that when you take three steps and pitch every single time.

It's been awful this year.

Disturbing stuff again.
We’re moving the ball great on offense, but effing up when we get close to scoring. No clue why Reesing threw that. It was first down, and he had no pressure on him.

Little choice.
I don’t think Pick is ready. KSU would gang up on the line of scrimmage and we couldn’t move the ball. Though KSU just scores because of another Todd turnover. Crap.
by hunter s. royal on Nov 7, 2009 12:54 PM CST up reply actions
Not sure.
Todd’s not just any quarterback. He’s probably most responsible for bringing the program out of mediocrity, which has led to improved recruiting that will allow us to hopefully maintain a high level of play.
by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Nov 7, 2009 12:56 PM CST up reply actions
True, but winning games will do more for recruiting than keeping in a player that is killing your chance at winning.
I don’t know enough about Pick, I’m guessing he’s not ready and from I’ve seen- he isn’t. Shitty situation right now for the Hawks.
I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.
OK, granted
truth be told, Todd probably give us the best chance to win…but they’ve got to go to some different plays that are safer. Play field position and try to squeak out 10 points, and hope we can hold them.
If Todd would have just slid on those plays…

Really at this point
I think you’ve got to consider it. He is killing us. The D is balling.
I think you go to Kerry actually and play the zone read. Todd is absolutely throwing this game away. It doesn’t say Reesing on the front of the jersey, it says Kansas.
And the dagger.

Halftime commentator:
Supports Reesing and then says all they have to is keep getting the ball to the playmakers.
That’s a whole hell of a lot easier when your qb is giving the ball to the other team.
I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.
The pimp on the right is a complete moron.
KSU is not stopping Reesing, he’s stopping himself. KSU has had a poor first half, and Todd has given them a lead.
by hunter s. royal on Nov 7, 2009 1:02 PM CST up reply actions
On the bright side
Areas of the team that have been problems, Mangino has been able to fix. The defense has gotten steadily better this year. The line is showing some more promise.
This season has boiled down to Reesing’s stunning decline…Mangino has gone to bowl games with three different QB. This season may be lost (who knows what happens in the 2nd half) but I trust that Mangino will get things righted overall. Really, if we get average QB play from week 5 on we are 6-2 and maybe 7-1, and leading in this game. I love Todd and will forever be indebted for what he’s given us thus far, but it’s not working right now. He’s hurting the team with his play.
I agree that Todd has a lot of equity built up, but there are 84 other guys who have busted their ass all year and deserve some reward, too.
I say start Todd in the 2nd half and if he turns it over again, you’ve got to yank him and bring in Meier or Pick. At the very minimum, you eliminate the turnovers and give us a chance to win with field position.

KSU bumble on the kick gives them mediocre field position.

I think Todd is a bit more to blame.
It’s so maddening when the O runs up and down the field with the ball and Reesing turns it over at the most critical times. Alien abduction of Todd’s brain with the substitution of Josh Freeman’s seem to be the only rational explanation.

It's just so frustrating
We have no idea how good this team could be if they’d just stop beating themselves. We used to be an excellent execution team- whatever happened to that?
When you refuse to beat yourself, you give yourself a great chance to win at the college level. 2007 was a perfect example of that.

amen
im going to throw out a radical thought…bench reesing for the rest of the year, or at least start gradually giving pick more reps… I know that Mangino will never think this way, but this season is for all intents and purposes a lost cause…we may win one more and squeak into a bowl, but putting in pick for some real experience doesn’t have to change that necessarily.
todd is really dragging us down, and I think this week should have been his last shot at seeing if he can turn it around. start thinking for this year and next…maybe pick takes better care of the ball, gives the team a spark, and gives todd a chance to clear his head a bit.
