A Fitting Tribute to the End of an Era
Consider this mandatory reading. Lost in the constant discussion of Mangino's future and the heartbreak of losing a tough one to Misery is this simple fact: the Todd Reesing Era is officially over.
Not only was Todd one of the most exciting college football players I've ever seen, but he was a truly great character and representative of KU off the field, as well.
Tim Tebow is an excellent player and person. But I'd be willing to bet that a lot more people out there can relate to Todd's story than Tim's.
Feel free to use this thread to share your favorite Reesing stories/ memories/ poetry about Sparky.

I'll take a stab at it KG...
I must admit, my first memory of Todd was coming back for the Colorado game in 2006. Who was this guy scrambling down the field that has suddenly made us a team that could move the ball. At the time I didn’t think a whole lot other than he had a nice game, turns out I had witnessed the beginning.
Other than that, I’ll remember his three games at Arrowhead that I witnessed first hand with fond memories despite falling short twice. In three games against the biggest rival of the Jayhawks Todd was…
102/155 for a 66% completion percentage. 1222 Yards passing, 10 TD’s 4 ints and 2 rushing TD’s…hell of a career against one team.
Lastly I’ll remember the Oklahoma State scramble of all scrambles before hitting Dexton Fields for a big first down and the game in Lincoln last year where Todd bounced off a Husker hit like a pinball and squared up to hit Meier for a TD.
Lot’s of great ones for Todd, too bad things couldn’t end on a high not, but it doesn’t change that he’ll go down in history as a Jayhawk great.
Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.
I remember the CU game as well
Since that season had started I had been telling my tail gate crew that we needed to bench Meier (the Kansas kid who racked up a bunch of yards against slow, white Kansas farm boys) and put in Reesing (the Texas kid who racked of a gazillion yards against Texas talent). Seemed like a no-brainer to me.
Then Mangino puts him in.
And his first pass is an int.
I was embarrassed.
But after that, it turned out pretty well (except for fumbling the ball at the 2 giving a CU 300 pounder a 98 yard TD run).
Sawin' wood - damn, blade just broke
A few (I witness all of these in person which makes me cooler than you):
Being at the CU game and bitching about pulling his redshirt before he went Sparky on the Buffs and saved the season (and possibly Mangino’s job at the time.
Seeing him take a knee on VTech’s one yard line in the Orange Bowl FTW
The touchdown to Meier last year.
And last but not least, meeting him two years ago while I was house hunting in the student ghetto. He was playing bags with a bunch of women in front of a house and I was like hey you’re Todd Reesing. I was at least 3 inches taller than the guy and I’m about 6’0 to 6’1.
I will miss Todd, Kerry Slash Meier, Dezmon Deep Man, Jake the Snake, Darrell “Chase Daniel’s is my bitch” Stucky and yes, Mark the Shark Mangino. Miss em all. Hell or a ride from the highs to the lows.
I saw Todd
Atleast I think I did. He was just walking alone on Mass. I was sitting in the Mad Greek a few weeks ago while visiting the school and he passed right by the window. It was really surreal.
I don’t know what Im gonna do without sparky’s fist pump/ pelvic thrusts. He was the face of Kansas football.
Rock Chalk Jayhawk
I remember the first time I heard about him. There was an article in the Daily Kansan about this kid that was coming to KU and had set all kinds of crazy passing records for Texas high schools, but was considered too short for most D-1 programs.
I remember immediately thinking that this kid would either be something special or a big-time flop. From that great run against CU, I had a feeling that it wasn’t going to be the latter.
I feel like I should clarify my comparison to Tim Tebow a bit. I think there’s a whole lot of people out there that have been counted out for whatever reason, and have had to use perseverance, hard work, and a little bit of luck to get where we are. We weren’t recruited by every school or every company out there desperately trying to get our services. We like to think of ourselves as genuinely good people, but most of us don’t spend our free time flying all over the world doing missionary work.
Reesing’s on-field antics are being well-documented by other posters, but I think what I’ll remember most about him is that he was such a regular guy that liked to do regular guy stuff, but who also happened to be blessed with one of the most unique athletic skill sets college football has seen for a long, long time.

Yeah I read that same artical
Thought it was crazy one recruit had such a huge front page story on him, not it seems like it was warranted.
A friend of mine wrote that piece.
Talk about foreshadowing a great college career, even though it ended less than spectacularly.
I don't know, I like to think that things started out initially with good intentions, but then we just loused it up. Kind of like intelligence. We have this glorious thing that allowed us to survive for millenia and now we use it to write porn film plots involving pterodactyls. Talk about wasting the gift.

The scramble against Houston last year
That should have been up for an ESPY…
Me no likey Clint Bowen.
A lot of Reesing memories
The scramble against OK ST. in 2007 with Musberger, “Shades of Doug Flutie!”.
The entire 2007 season honestly.
The play where he got hit by a Nebraska defender and bounced off him and threw a TD to Meier.
Who can ever forget “the play” against Mizzou in the snow.
This year was disappointing for sure, but Todd Reesing truly was something special at KU and I’ll definitely remember his time here and some of the remarkable things he did on the football field. Thanks Todd.

Does he get added to the ring of honor?
Does anybody else from this senior class?

Dez, Todd....
and maybe Kerry Meier
Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.
if thats a criteria that's set...
I’d agree. I’m not aware of it myself though are you? and is it first team only or how does it work?
Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.
So that means such illuminaries such as
Aqib Talib are more qualified for the ring of honor than Todd, Kerry, or Dez?
Me no likey Clint Bowen.
No
I had just always heard that you need to be an All-American to be considered.
No doubt Dez, Todd, and Kerry hold numerous Kansas records.
But to be in the ring, I think you need to be a player that has been recognized on a national level.
Sawin' wood - damn, blade just broke
I'm not sure it's a requirement per se
I know the guys that have been an All-American have a special flag next to their names… but I thought there were some guys on there that didn’t have flags.
According to wiki (FWIW):
The Ring of Honor is located atop the northern bowl at Memorial Stadium and is intended to honor Kansas All-Americans and others who have made a significant on-field contribution to the football program.
Interestingly enough, one of the players in the Ring of Honor that was never an All-American was Mr. John Riggins.
I’d say Sparky fits that second qualification.

screw the All-American
changing the landscape of the KU program in this era and setting every passing record possible at the school is enough for me for him to be added.
