Ask a Mizzou guy

Hey all, this is RPT from Rock M Nation. I'm on Thanksgiving Break and am not sure I'll have time to trade more formal questions with the brass at RCT, but I wanted to make sure I had the chance to answer any Mizzou-related questions you guys might have as they pertain to next Saturday's showdown at Arrowhead.

Now, given the nature of this rivalry and given the strength of the community here at RCT, I presume you all are pretty well versed with how Missouri looks and what Missouri has done this year. However, if you have any loose ends you want tied up or have any questions about this team or this matchup, feel free to drop them in this thread and I'll do my best to answer them.

You guys aren't on TV very much, so I haven't really followed you at all, actually

Here’s a question: Is Pinkel still good for one or two absolutely baffling coaching decisions per game? I felt like he was one of our best players last year.

Another: Bigger reason for your drop in offensive production this year- Losing Chase “Booger Sugar” Daniel, or Dave Christensen?

You'll find a sharp schism in the Mizzou fan base about Pinkel

There’s a group you’ll find that remains fairly faithful in Pinkel, but there’s also a very vocal “FIRE PINKLE!!! WE NEED A FULLBACK!!! HE CAN’T BEAT UT/OU!!! GOLD PANTS!!!” crowd. For the most part, I haven’t had much of a bone to pick with him for playcalling this year. It seems like most of the vitriol (and I don’t mean to imply that there’s any more vitriol than any other team at any other time) has been against new OC Dave Yost.

I think the drop in production is primarily attributable to youth. It’s a freakin’ young team that’s been prone to making all kinds of young mistakes, especially drops. That is compounded with the fact that Missouri played its toughest stretch of the season — Nebraska, Oklahoma State, and Texas — with a quarterback who couldn’t walk around campus for three weeks without a walking boot. Gabbert was rolled up by Suh early in the NU game, and he really wasn’t himself for three weeks.

This was compounded with the fact that the Missouri running game was a shell of itself for the first half of the season. For whatever reason, the MU running game never got off the ground early on. In 2006-2008 (the Daniel years), MU wasn’t a great running team, but it was good enough that if you sold out to stop the pass, MU had no issues handing the ball off and exploiting the matchup in the box (see: Cotton Bowl). It’s taken awhile for that running game to get back on track.

by RPT on Nov 23, 2009 12:33 PM CST up reply actions

Neither

I’ve been pretty happy with both our offensive coordinator and Blaine Gabbert’s every bit as good as Chase Daniel.

What we’re really missing are playmakers in the recieving corps beyond Alexander. He’s been phenomenal this year, don’t get me wrong, but if you ask me whether I’d rather have Daniel or Maclin back, I have to choose Maclin. Hell, I’d probably take Coffman back over Daniel at this point. Gabbert’s that good, at least when he’s healthy.

I dont,Its a pretty touchy subject and i will take back the Fred Phelps statement

But i also believe most people under 30-35 yrs old have bought the whole military bad idea.

you may be right, I took it as a more personal jab I suppose. I just would not include myself in that category even though I’m under 30.

Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.

by Owen Kemp on Nov 24, 2009 7:40 PM CST up reply actions

uhhhhh...what?

First off, I don’t think anybody hates Fred Phelps as much as Kansans do.

Secondly, care to share an example of people under 30 not “believing we need a military” or not respecting military members? Remember, the so-called “hippie generation” openly despised and disrespected members of the military. Today people might not support the wars, but actual disrespect of military members is extremely rare in my experience.

Anyways, the flag is just a symbol. Soldiers don’t fight for a piece of cloth- they fight for the freedoms that cloth stands for. I really hope you aren’t letting your feelings about a college sports rivalry make you believe that Todd Reesing somehow disrespects the military because he wore a jacket.

Are Missourians proud of this fella?

kinda funny in an in-bred sorta way.
No im not letting my feelings get in the way,you would have to understand though, being raised by a military father you have a deeper understanding of what these “symbols” mean, and should never be desecrated or taken for granted.

And i did take back the Phelps thing nobody should be saddled with his kind a hate monger, and whats even sadder is his daughter has taken up where he left off.

by Bestofthewest on Nov 25, 2009 12:09 PM CST up reply actions

I don't think it's appropriate to assume things like that

Don’t know where you get the military thing at all and don’t get me started on Fred Phelps, he is probably the American I despise most in this world. He does not represent Kansas and he especially does not represent KU in that he protests our graduations. I walked right by him and his group of brain-washed bumpkins and yelled plenty of obscene things their way.

Finally, sorry for your losses and I appreciate everything that any of your military family members have done for our country.

Now let’s get back to the only fun war there is, the one played on the gridiron this saturday!

In all seriousness...

there was some video up over at Rock M Nation from MU’s senior day. Witherspoon and Alexander have been class acts and are guys that very clearly LOVED their time at Mizzou.

With all that’s come to light at Kansas this week, I kind of feel like we’re missing a bit of that right now. Even the guys that are our captains and senior leaders have really had a tough go this year and whoever is to blame, it’s really a shame.

Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.

by Owen Kemp on Nov 23, 2009 11:51 AM CST up reply actions

Passing Defense...

Kansas’ offense has struggled to reach the rhythm it has in years past. Mizzou’s passing defense has also had it’s struggles.

Can Kansas get back on track? Just looking for a quick synopsis of why you think Mizzou has struggled and if that plays into what Kansas used to do well.

Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.

by Owen Kemp on Nov 23, 2009 11:49 AM CST reply actions

Here's what's scary...

Overall, Mizzou’s pass defense hasn’t been as horrible as the numbers would suggest. A lot of that can be credited to new DC Dave Steckel.

But Kansas is the type of team that can do exactly what Baylor did. Missouri plays mostly a bend but don’t break system, in which our DBs very frequently line up at least 7 yards off the line of scrimmage. If I’m an opponent, I’m throwing the ball out to the receivers quickly, almost like an extended handoff, and letting them take their free 4-5 yards every time. Chip away at Mizzou underneath, and then at some point, there will be that one breakdown over top that will open up. Kendall Wright was that guy for Baylor, and Briscoe could well be that guy for Kansas. It’s really a matter of patience.

On top of that, Mizzou isn’t great on broken plays when QBs can scramble around. We don’t have to rehash 2008 to know that this could clearly be an advantage for one Mr. Reesing. Mizzou’s DEs are incredibly quick, which means they’re also incredibly prone to getting caught too far upfield. If Reesing steps up and flushes out, the Kerry Meier Improv Showâ„¢ can start once again.

I should also add, though, that you better protect your quarterback. Missouri’s D-Line has played extremely well over the last few games, and Aldon Smith is a freshman All-American at DE and should be up for All-Big 12 consideration. In addition, MU hasn’t blitzed much, but has been pretty effective when doing so.

Time for the Important Stuff.

Missouree or Missouruh? And is it true the school has to go by “Mizzou” to avoid wide-scale rioting over this issue on campus and in the stands?

Also, be honest- if the Paige Laurie thing had happened at Kansas, how long would you guys still be making jokes about it? Or is there no statute of limitations on something like that? And what is Paige up to these days?

Granted, I'm an out of stater...

But I say Missouree, damn it. The Missouruh is a river, Missouree is a state.

Honestly, I probably would have let the Paige thing go after a few years, but you could easily call me a progressive as far as trash talk goes. I’d much rather talk about Jocques Crawford’s 2000-yard promise.

Fair enough.

Is the “Athena Five” still fair ground? I feel like fighting football players is a lot more badass than fighting frat boys in da club, personally.

by RPT on Nov 24, 2009 7:25 AM CST up reply actions

One more...

Is MU a “football school” or a “basketball school”? It seems to go back and forth, and I can’t keep track. Shouldn’t a “football school” have had significantly more success historically over a “basketball school” like KU? Especially given that MU is the only major university in a state with a much larger population than Kansas, which splits into two major universities?

If Norm had gotten you guys over the hump and into a Final Four, would this be a debate? Or is this a silly and pointless label, since any alumnus of any school wants all of their sports teams to be successful on some level?

RODD TEESING, my arch-nemesis! Give us back our TODD, you rapscallion!

by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Nov 23, 2009 6:05 PM CST reply actions

Oh, Jesus. That's a loaded question.

It’s funny, because I really think Missouri is a football school that happens to have fans that are more knowledgeable in basketball than in football. I think it’s a football school by desire and a basketball school by knowledge, if that makes any sense whatsoever.

by RPT on Nov 23, 2009 11:07 PM CST up reply actions

Makes sense

I feel like a lot more people have played basketball on some level than football. Especially when you factor in girls into the equation (luckily none of them are around on the internet, making stuff all girly and shit). Plus, there’s so many more games to watch and learn from- especially when every football play has 11 different things going on at once.

Another question- what are your NFL prospects for next year looking like? I know about Alexander, but where is Witherspoon projected? Anybody else likely to be drafted?

Would it be fair to say that KU has produced more great NFL players than MU? Winslow was a badass, but we’ve got Riggo, Sayers, and Hadl.

Fortunately, we seen more from our crew than just those 6 games. Even better, we got to see the first 3 quarters of the Tech game and the last half of the CU game to know that they are capable of so much more. If we hang together, and stop sharing with the other team quite so much, we’ll be fine – and happy.
