Kansas v Central Arkansas OGT

Central Arkansas at Kansas Jayhawks, Nov 19, 2009 7:00 PM CST

Allen-fieldhouse-450w_medium

Hard to believe a basketball game slipped under the radar.  Kansas takes the court tonight in about 20 minutes and I just remembered.  Join us for tonights OGT, we'll talk basketball and I'm guessing a little football might get in the mix as well.

Here's your online link for those out of the area.  Password is: phog

Lastly if you haven't joined up with Rock Chalk Talk, what are you waiting for...register here.

Top-ranked Kansas returns home to face Central Arkansas in its second game of the Basketball Hall of Fame Showcase.

The Jayhawks defeated Memphis 57-55 in a defensive battle Tuesday evening in the opening round of the Basketball Hall of Fame Showcase at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. Central Arkansas is 1-1 on the season after its 71-67 loss to Tennessee Tech on Nov. 16.

Marcus

was also a pretty damn good rebounder last year

I’m sure the media will somehow credit Danny Manning with that all year. I always think it’s funny that everytime one of our big men make a play the announcers are like…“that’s what Danny Manning has been teaching him”

by Owen Kemp on Nov 19, 2009 8:23 PM CST up reply actions

That is kinda funny

but very, very true. I mean, Manning’s great and all, but he didn’t give these guys their natural ability.

Operation 40-0 is a go. Proceed to target.

by Bensa on Nov 19, 2009 8:24 PM CST up reply actions

for sure...

don’t get me wrong I’m sure he’s huge in teaching these kids but there are a lot of areas as you say that have a lot to do with natural ability.

Shit, it just won't stop will it?
“We are sending kids out into the world prepared,” Mangino told the radio station. "But I can’t do the work of some parents, what they should have done before [the players] got to me. Some of these guys are bitter, they are bitter and [the allegations] are about that.

“There are some things that happen for 18 years of their lives that I can’t change in four years of college. Can’t do it. Can’t change their behaviors, can’t change their attitudes.”

Maybe.

Could read that as him trying to make himself into a martyr.

If most of the allegations are true, he’s not the type that’s going to have a filter when everything goes down, though. Wouldn’t be shocked to see him make a scene.

players in the program are being pretty hush hush right now. Also seems a lot of those guys out of the program that were going to go on record are wanting to wait now. I think this thing got so ugly and guys just want to stay out of it right now.

all that talent, and only one ball on the floor at a time. Color me skeptical as to their long-term team success in 09-10, but UK will fawn over Cal – Gillespie couldn’t get out of town fast enough.

I hope so,

but I remember the original Fab 5 at Michigan, who looked awful numerous times early in the year, but almost got the national title.

You know what's sad?

All these walk-ons could make the average ball player look like an idiot on the court.

I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.

by Warden11 on Nov 19, 2009 8:59 PM CST reply actions

that's not entirely true.

I mean, our team’s good, but I played against the walk ons up until I graduated last year at the student rec. Nothing spectacular, trust me. (Not including CJ, of course.) Now Moody, that was another story…

by play4'ships on Nov 19, 2009 9:09 PM CST up reply actions

I used to play against em too

Although I got the impression they didn’t try 100% in the games. I played with Stevie Vincent a few times and he’d just kinda drift around, pass and try and get guys points. Then two days later go out and drop 12 for us in a game (back when Super Mario, Brandon “B-Rush” Rush, Julian “Ju Ju aka Chi Flava aka the gazelle” Wright were young and he still got PT)

by KU Grad 08 on Nov 19, 2009 10:08 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, Vincent was good, no doubt there.

But you could also tell a lot of how he was good was because he learned how to survive against such great competition in practice. Moody’s athleticism was pretty amazing for a walkon. I’m talking more about buford, Junemann, Witherspoon, etc. I’m not trying to take anything from those guys, Brad is a really guy, I’m just saying that the difference between our walkons and an average player isnt much. the different between the other 10 guys and our walkons is HUGE.

CJ's gonna get more PT

CJ will be a factor.

This year.

We could seriously be looking at TT moving to 3rd string at the 2 guard.

Doesn't have the shot Boozer had/has

Boozer has a nasty jumper and more polished post moves. TRob is only a frosh maybe he can develop those. His jumpers so far are off, but he can improve.

Question

Why the hell did we schedule this game? I didn’t want to ask during the game and put on some horrifying jinx, but seriously…what was the point of that? Other than seeing what CJ can do (which is a LOT!), this was worse than a scrimmage, because a scrimmage has better talent.

I mean, a team that just joined D-1? Really? I’m sure they needed the money, and they’re kind of in our region… but why can’t we play someone like Witchita State or Creighton or any of those teams instead?

I have no problem playing teams like Oakland, since they’re one of the best teams in the MidCon (or whatever the hell they call it these days), and ORU from that conference beat us at home not that long ago. Any team that has a legitimate shot at making the tournament is fine in my book.

But those guys tonight aren’t even dreaming about the NIT this year. This was just a big program paying out some broke athletic department so that we could beat up on them and sell some Jayhawk-shaped popcorn holders. Not a fan of that. We don’t need to pad our win total to get in the tournament- we need to push ourselves to be as good as we possibly can come March.

Having said that, I am a huge hypocrite, since I will be going to the Tennessee Tech game next Friday, and am looking forward to it. Rock Chalk Jayhawk.
