Perkins

If this is all part of some master plan by the AD, then I hope he realizes what kind of risk he’s taking. The success or failure of Mangino’s replacement will be what everyone remembers Lew’s legacy at KU to be. Period. All the facilities upgrades and fundraising increases will be a mere footnote after this.

If he’s fired 5 years from now, journalists will focus almost entirely on this whole situation and how it played out. Any good he has done for the program will be a sidenote towards the end of the story.

Perkins has shown vision and a great ability to fundraise while a leader of KUAD. Now we will find out what kind of eye for coaching talent the man has, and whether this kind of manipulation will pay off, or blow up in his face.

Very well done Hip Hop!

Agree with KGRtC, if this is all part of some master plan then Lew has some serious cojones.

What does KU_Lew have to say about it??

Me no likey Clint Bowen.

As much as it looks like Mangino didn't do much to save himself...

…I have a very bad feeling about how this whole thing ends up as far as the football program is concerned.

Lew may have done some great things to bulk up the athletic department since he arrived, but he’s no Midas with a Golden Touch. We all make mistakes eventually, and this just might be his.

I don't know, I like to think that things started out initially with good intentions, but then we just loused it up. Kind of like intelligence. We have this glorious thing that allowed us to survive for millenia and now we use it to write porn film plots involving pterodactyls. Talk about wasting the gift.

I've heard that his hand was forced a bit...

by top level administration with the university.

once again, Denver with the goods

So once the “injured player being forced to play” story bubbled its way up, the administration got involved? That’s interesting.

So is the speculation that the “player with the knee injury” being forced to play is Sharp?

That has been my suspicion from the start.

I keep harping on this (especially at rumor-mill-central KUSports.com), but seriously: Lew set a BAD precendent the way he handled this. It will affect his ability to attract a new coach.

Who would want to work for guy knowing: 1) you could be publicly blind-sided any minute, and 2) the first time you piss off a player, they can go screaming to mommy or daddy and have an internal investigation started, and 3) don’t ever lose 5 games in a row!

Ok, #3 was a joke. Maybe.

If they’re gonna get their $40 million, they need a good product on the field!

This post really makes the case that Lew used this as his opportunity.

If that’s the case, how is Mangino going to coach on Saturday? If the unthinkable happens and they find a win, how can he be fired the week of the Missouri game after a huge win? Create turmoil for the biggest week of the year AND after a huge win?

Doesn’t make sense that he’s still around right now.

I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.

I still subscribe to the theory that Denver has alluded to...

Lew is not in total control here. Lew’s got a new boss. And this is her chance to use her new-found powers.

by Rivethead on Nov 19, 2009 4:41 PM CST up reply actions

why would she dip her hand into athletics, though, when that isn't her job?

I would be really curious as to why the football coach would be in her interest. The way I see it, is she is the boss to Lew when it comes to the entire athletic department and it’s issues. But I would think she would leave all internal athletic issues and responsibilities up to Lew, like coaching changes and that sort of thing. I guess anything is possible, though.

by I need more Esteban on Nov 19, 2009 4:48 PM CST up reply actions

how's this for a theory

Just playing this out, if the Chancellor got involved…What if, when things got loose about the player safety issues, she took it on as her responsibility for student safety. If this is a matter of student safety, then it is indeed under her purview. At that point, she would be justified in her mind in forcing Perkins to act.

Just a theory, not necessarily one I subscribe to, but it makes some sense.

That't exactly what happened

I think.

a Chancellor....

absolutely has influence on the athletic programs. Hemingway wasn’t supportive of football for years. He came around late but make no mistake a University President, Chancellor or whatever they may be called has a hand in these types of areas.

I do realize they have influence and authority on

athletic programs.

I’m saying that I’m not so sure I feel they should when it comes to personnel matters, but, DCJayhawks point is a good one above and I could see that.

Because the new addition to the football stadium...

will raise up to $40 million for academics at the university? Check my link above.

Could be, I'm just saying that if Lew is running this show

how is Mangino coaching this weekend? I still don’t see how that happens and I can’t imagine it would happen tomorrow on the travel day.

Maybe they’ll wait for the game, likely take a beating and take care of it early next week. If the cause is “player safety”, how can they let him continue coaching practices and games?

Kansas doesn’t travel until late in the day almost evening. Plenty of time to get it done. Also would somewhat limit distraction as the players would be in a more controlled environment. Just a theory.

No Offense, Hiphopopotomus

And your flows that glow like phosphorus, but weren’t you “positive” Mangino was going to be fired today? How do we know your sources on this story are legit?

No offense taken, but...

I never said I was positive on anything, but rather that I expected him gone by the end of the week. And since they’re currently in the process of negotiating a buyout, I’d say things are pretty much on schedule. That said, I still haven’t heard whether or not he’ll be in Austin. Which is stunning – really seems like he can’t make that trip, but who knows.
