Anybody know what this is about?
This sounds serious. Denver? Rivet? Labba? Anybody have any idea what's going on with this?

I thought this post could use a little more explanation to get discussion going
no idea what to think about this.
KU AD Perkins meets with football players over concerns about coach Mark Mangino
Monday night with the school’s football players to discuss concerns about football coach Mark Mangino brought to his attention by one of the current players and others with ties to the football program, the Journal-World has learned.
“I can confirm an internal review is under way,” Perkins said in a quote released by the school. “It involves a personnel matter, and as a result, is confidential. It would be inappropriate for me to provide further information right now.”
This is crazy and will be very interesting to follow. I can’t really imagine what it would be but maybe it can explain the utter collapse the team has had. Should be one to follow pretty closely.

Definitely should have
given the post a more specific title to get more traffic. Hopefully that won’t hinder the discussion too much.

This rumor has been going around...
not sure I like the sound of it to be honest…As I said in our fire Mangino fanpost discussion this would be the only reason Mangino’s job should be looked at.

Any specifics on the "rumor" that's going around?
Is it a player issue? Just overall frustration in the ranks?

KC Star reporting this
Current Kansas football players met with KU athletic director Lew Perkins on Monday night to discuss concerns about KU coach Mark Mangino stemming from a recent incident involving Mangino and a player, a source told The Star
That doesn’t sound too good, this is also kind of weird to me:
The source said players at the meeting, at which Mangino was not present, were invited to bring forward information in front of a formal panel. The source said there is an organized group of former players’ parents ready to air their concerns about Mangino as well.
What in the hell could be going on?
by I need more Esteban on Nov 17, 2009 11:49 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
It almost sounds like
it could be a player abuse issue. I know that sounds harsh, and it may be something rather innocuous, but it could be quite serious, as well.

it seems more serious
because Lew confirmed it. It’s not like him to do that, he’s usually pretty hush hush on stuff like this but he admitted it outright that there was something going on.
What’s with all the drama?
by I need more Esteban on Nov 17, 2009 12:07 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Cue the ominous music!
I wonder if Lew is going to use dissatisfaction by the players as a way to more easily cut ties with Mangino.
I don’t think there’s any rational way to dump Mangino because of one bad year, but if Lew’s convinced they need to make a change he may trump up friction between Mangino & the players to more easily move the phat man out.
Pure speculation of course.

I would also assume...
that some sort of internal investigation related to conduct would take care of any buyout issues.

I've always heard
that while Mangino has a high annual salary(2.5-3 million) on a revolving 5 year deal, the buyout clause is only one year of salary.

From today's press conference (via KUSports.com)
Mangino confirmed he had a 10-15 minute meeting with Perkins after the athletic director met with players.
“If you want to know what was said, I’m not disclosing it. He’s the one who’s disclosing information about it, I’m not,” Mangino said.
Sounds like a significant rift between MM and LP to me.

and it didn’t sound as stinging the second time. Sort of sounds like he’s just telling the reporter that if he wants to know what Lew had to say, then the report should ask Lew.

This may sound terrible, but...
How could Mangino physically hurt an athlete in top physical condition? Couldn’t they just out-jog him?
If they are talking to parents of former players, this clearly means that Lew is looking into the possibility that there’s some kind of pattern going on here.
Could be verbal abuse, could be forcing them to practice too much, could be forcing guys to do drills without pads against guys in pads (see Eric Mangini)… could be anything.
Still think this has something to do with a double standard for TODD/RODD than everybody else, personally.

Breaking down MM's
recent contract extension. Interesting only in the fact that there is no buyout should MM walk from this job, but no specifics around an early termination buyout. I would speculate that if that came to pass, there would simply be a settlement.
Make sure Bob Krause isn’t anywhere near this situation.
by JayhawkTom on Nov 17, 2009 12:38 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Warning: Lawya Talk!
The interesting thing to me about the structure of that deal is that the money is all coming from KUAD, not the state of Kansas itself. This means that contract is private, and no one else can look at it. If it was a contract with the state, anyone could look at it through a Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA) request.
Theoretically, the only two people that know exactly what’s in that contract are Lew and Mark themselves (and their lawyers, but they’re sworn to secrecy or could lose their law licenses). It’s interesting how innocuous that seemed at the time- “oh good! No more money coming out of state coffers!” Now it suddenly has a different twist…

*RUMOR*
I want to EMPHASIZE that the following is just a RUMOR. I have NO IDEA if it is true or not- I’m simply repeating what I heard.
That being said, the RUMOR is that Mangino did “attack” a player, and may be gone by the end of this week.
The following is NOT a rumor:
Mangino’s buyout close is as follows: $300,000 for every year he coaches the Jayhawks after the 2008 season. So, pretty darn cheap at this point. And that’s only if he is fired without cause. If something serious did happen, they would be firing him WITH cause, and could theoretically owe him nothing (although they’d probably give him something just to go away quietly).

The show's pretty decent
when Kietzman’s gone on vacation & Todd Leabo & Clinkscale run it. It becomes a low key, rational discussion of sport without Jack Harry jr. spewing his venom.
Clinkscale does not like Mangino, but he can give fairly rational reasons for it. However, while he will disagree with Kietzman on the air, there’s no question if he goes too far he will lose his job, so he’s considerably handicapped in making his points.
by hunter s. royal on Nov 17, 2009 5:56 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I rarely hear him disagree with Keitzman
Agreed on everything else. I can live with him not liking Mangino, and I agree that his reasons may be valid, but if all he’s going to do is be Keitzman’s Ed McMahon, then what is his purpose?
To me, it’s a trust issue. I don’t trust what KK is telling me, and I don’t trust what Clinkscale says either. I trust Petro, and I trust the Border Patrol guys. KK has no credibility to me, and I don’t understand why people don’t see him for what he is.

Most rational sports fans in town
are openly contemptuous towards Kietzman and share your feelings.
But, Jack Harry, who hasn’t had an original thought in 40 years, is still drawing paychecks, so someone like KK who has de-evolved into a dishonest hack can still get a large audience.(Though his numbers have been shrinking)
We’ll get a more reasonable assessment of the situation tomorrow during Petro’s show thankfully.

Trying...
To piece together a scenario where this can be fixed and everyone stays in place, but I just don’t see it.
We know Mangino is pissed at Perkins from his presser remarks.
We assume that Perkins, as a savvy business man, would have realized what he was doing this morning by confirming the story about the players’ meeting to Keegan- especially only a couple hours or so before Mangino’s weekly press conference.
Maybe if the “independent investigator” finds nothing bad has occurred (and let’s be honest, that will be completely he said/ she said), Perkins could give Mangino a very public “vote of confidence,” basically tell the players to STFU, and Mangino and Perkins make an agreement never to speak about this again…?

if perkins isn't sure he's firing Mangino,
the STFU to the players and public vote of confidence should have happened 2 days ago. I think Lew has made his decision. I don’t like it, but thats what I see happening.

Me too.
Perkins has already played his hand……look at the timing of his public comments in relation to the timing of Coach Mangino’s weekly presser (as stated by KGRTC).
That’s f*cking dirty pool right there, IMHO. And it makes me think: what reasonable coach in their right mind would want to work for an azzhole AD like that?
Then again, what reasonable coach will want to work at a school where if a player gets pissed off for any reason, they can go crying to Mommy and Daddy and the AD will launch and internal investigation?
