A Day Off Work Brings New Jayhawk Confidence Index (JCI)

So, here's the deal: Kansas Basketball season has started and we are all undoubtedly excited about the possibilities of this coming season.  Kansas Basketball is the lifeblood of this site (no offense to Denver and his awesome coverage of the football team all summer and current season long.  So, a special thanks to Denver for all of his hard work, time and effort that he has, and will continue to, put in.  We will unquestionably continue to support the football team, but Kansas Basketball is where it's at.  Hell, you can't write Kansas Basketball without capitalizing the word "basketball.") and this season should only be bigger than last year's here at RCT.

It does seem a bit crazy that the season is here already.  It seems just a couple weeks ago I was in Indy, walking out of Lucas Oil Stadium, head hung, but already thinking ahead to next year and how I'm going to be back there again for this year's Final Four.  (Plan still stands - see you all there!)  We all know the roster and the depth that Coach Self has at his disposal, so I won't go on and on about that like the entire national media has done already.

Instead, I wanted to bring something new to everybody here at RCT.  This is something that I have seen on a few other SBNation sites for their respective teams, and found to be very interesting and fun.  (Explanation here.)  As big as Kansas Basketball is, let's see if we can't make this a semi-regular/ monthly kind of thing here.  I'll go ahead and take the reigns and run with it, so just keep an eye out each time you log in on RCT and always, always, always participate.  Because, everybody is right, here.  (Unless, of course, you are a part of this.)

Star-divide

The Questions (give explanation if you feel inclined to do so.)

Answer accordingly, 1-10.

1.  How do you feel about the 2009-10 Kansas backcourt?

2.  How do you feel about the 2009-10 Kansas frontcourt?

3.  How do you feel about the 2009-10 Kansas offense?

4.  How do you feel about the 2009-10 Kansas defense?

5.  How do you feel about the 2009-10 Kansas coaching staff?

6.  How do you feel about the 2009-10 Kansas recent results?

7.  How do you feel about the 2009-10 Kansas upcoming schedule?

8.  How do you feel about the 2009-10 Kansas expectations?

Go ahead, give your answers, explanations and even any suggestions on how to make the Jayhawk Confidence Index (JCI) better.

And, as always, ROCK CHALK!

A Couple Randoms Up for Discussion

  • RCT t-shirts - KUGrad08, SlowDance - what's the deal on these?  Talks heated up back in August(?), but nothing ever materialized.  giants9107 I'm sure would like his free shirt for the Fantasy Baseball League he won on the last day of the season.  (I'm not still bitter about that, I swear.)  I mean, who wouldn't want a shirt with this on it?!  Utopia, I tell you!
  • I work Tuesday night, the night of KU-Memphis.  I get off at 9:30.  The game starts at 9:00.  I will get home just before 10:00.  Should I start the game on DVR as soon as I get home and fast-forward through commercials, timeouts, etc. and attempt to catch up with all of you in the Open Game Thread by the end, or just start from whatever point the game is at when I get home?  I'm torn.  Please help.

First off...

you should just join the game Tuesday night wherever it is…go back and watch later if you want to see what you missed.

To answer your questions…

1. VERY GOOD

2. VERY GOOD

3. VERY GOOD

4. VERY GOOD…but just a smidgen lower than the others

5. VERY GOOD

6. VERY GOOD

7. VERY GOOD

8. VERY GOOD

at this point, no explanation needed…if you’ve watched a game yet…you know why.

Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.

FYI...

VERY Good = 9-10…I guess I didn’t read closely enough to see there was a numerical scale to abide by. My fault.

That's OK.

I parrot all your grades Denver, except I would still call the defense unproven. Cole will block a lot of shots, but I worry how seriously the younger players will defend. They may get so hyped they join the parachute club and try to imitate Cole and go for the flashy D by trying to block shots but get sloppy fundamentally. The danger for this team may be that we score so many points in most of the games, we get sloppy about playing solid man to man D.

Agree with Denver

on the DVR question. Unless, of course, you don’t care about the OGT. My feeling is that if you can join in prior to the start of the 2nd half, you should watch it live and participate in the OGT. If you are nearing the end of the game, then watch the whole thing recorded and ignore the OGT.

To the JCI…

1. 10
2. 10
3. 10
4. 6 (Waiting for more consistent on-the-ball pressure…I’d love to see frequent full-court pressure, actually, but I don’t expect that to happen any time soon)
5. 10 (Big believer in HCBS, but then again, you all know that)
6. 10 (X’s performance vs. Hofstra bumps this up from an 8)
7. 9 (Memphis scares me just a little, but other than that, there’s not much in it for a while)
8. 10 (I’m already on record as predicting 40-0, so I’m kinda stuck here)

It's rather ironic that people will actually have to pay money to see Michael Moore's new Anti-Capitalism film, don't you think?

It's not my fault my players went off this week

Or that I’m in first place, or that I’m top scorer in an 18-team league, or that my first round pick was a total and complete bust, or, or, or.

I'm not sure

that, not counting injured players, a player has gone from such heights of fantasy relevance to the absolute depths in as little time as McGahee did this season. That was bizarre.

As for your talking points -

Doubt the t-shirt thing is going to happen. Slowdance is officially AWOL. From the looks of his status updates he’s pretty, uh, preoccupied by his new life in the Nati.

Though I would love that t-shirt…

As for the DVR… DVR away. Watch as much as you can. Watching a team like this shouldn’t be wasted. The OGT will be here when you’re caught up.

Well I made the gdarn t-shirt design

I’m actually meeting with a t-shirt place this week to make t-shirts for the paper I’m Marketing Manager for that we are giving away for some promotional thing I have yet to put together.

Let me grab a quote while I’m in there for say 25-40 shirts (what range we talking here) and we can go from there gabeesh

My ratings are at the present time. I'm going a little lower in some areas because I think we will only get better, especially in some areas, with experience.

1. 9. Sherron is… well Sherron, TT will get better with more control, X is legit and Profit Elijah will add some nice new depth with Tyrel who can still hit the shots.
2. 8. Hard to judge this group until they play better big men, but the Morri look improved.
3. 9. Would like a few more touches into the post especially against smaller teams but so far our offense looks terrific.
4. 7. Defense has been solid, could improve. And it will, I have no doubts about it. KU always plays better and better on D as the season continues. Credit Bill and his staff for preaching D.
5. 10. Bill did a great job with timeouts and calming down a jittery team Friday. Young players have obviously developed. 10 for the coaches.
6. 9. Should have won by more (joke).
7. 10. Good mix of winnable games but some much needed tests for this group. Perfect schedule for this season, IMHO. Even if we drop one or two. Need to be tested and battle hardened and have some gimmes too.
8. 8. Expectations are warranted, little nervous about young guns shouldering that kind of pressure. This is Kansas though. They’ll be alright.

by KU Grad 08 on Nov 16, 2009 1:51 PM CST reply actions

1. 10- right now, the deepest, most talented, most versatile group in the country.

2. I’ll go a little lower here, and say 7 right now. Other than Cole, we still are relying on three undersized guys at the PF spot. I noticed a lack of shotblocking against Hofstra whenever Aldrich was on the bench. I need to see what Withey is capable of before I’m ready to notch this number up. Rebounding-wise, they are better from last year. But I need to see a little more with interior defense.

3. Offense is still in development mode, so I can’t be too harsh yet. Definitely need to get Cole more touches, and get the bigs more involved in pick and rolls or pick and pops. Zone offense could get a lot better by attacking the middle more- Cole and the Morrises need to be able to consistently hit those jumpers around the free throw line to force defenses to collapse, creating openings for others. However, I love the increased explosiveness we have this year- we’re back to our above-the-rim game, which I love. So I’ll say a 7 for now. Hey, this is Kansas Basketball- we’ve got high expectations.

4. Defense is another area that’s still in development. Need to get the freshmen up to speed on how to defend different screens, etc. Need to find our “lockdown guy” for when the competition steps up- who can we throw on the other team’s best player to make his life miserable? I’ve seen a little bit of fullcourt pressure so far, which I love- I think it takes great advantage out of our superior depth. So I’ll go with an 8.

5. 10. Self continues to bring in the thunder on the recruiting trail, including showing a great ability to find “below-the-radar” guys like T-Rob that turn into absolute gems at the college level. Furthermore, Danny Manning’s big man teachings are outstanding. Not only are we consistently developing great big man play for our own needs, but it’s become an excellent recruiting tool, as well. We turned Sasha Kaun into an NBA draft pick, for crying out loud!

6. 10. Can’t complain about three straight blowouts. Team chemistry also looks very good- great body language all around, a supportive and happy bench. Keep it up!

7. Really looking forward to Memphis. They’ve got legitimate height and athleticism, which is something we’ve yet to face (other than in practice, of course). Should be a game where we can learn a lot about where the team is at at this point. So, 10 I guess?

8. My expectations haven’t changed- win the Big 12 regular season, sweep Mizzou and KState, and play up to our seed in the tournament. Anything more than that is up to fate, IMO.

Are you really that calm, or were you trying to play adult? Because I tell myself that every single year, and, every single year, I’m sitting on the edge of my seat, yelling at the TV when things don’t go our way?

Are there classes for that kind of calm?

by DCJayhawk0208 on Nov 16, 2009 6:35 PM CST up reply actions

Well

I’m assuming if those things happen we’ll be a #1 seed come March. And yes, I would be satisfied with making the Final Four. Sure, losing would suck at the moment.

But I was at both the Bucknell and Bradley games. I’ve seen the depths of hurt March Madness can bring about, and how all logic can often be thrown out of these games. When dealing with an absurd system, it is best to at least try to keep an even-keel, in my experience.

by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Nov 16, 2009 7:56 PM CST up reply actions

The only part of this team that has me a little nervous is the backcourt.

It’s ridiculous to say that, but I’m still not sold on Sherron and T2 staying composed in a game where their shots aren’t falling. With this team, their shots not falling shouldn’t kill the chances of a win against anyone. IF they feed the ball inside when they are struggling and let the big men work (freeing up great looks on the outside), this team will be damn near unstoppable.

I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.

by Warden11 on Nov 16, 2009 6:45 PM CST reply actions

For now, at least

Sherron seems content playing facilitator. He saw that X was the hot hand against Hofstra, and kept feeding him the rock.

And I don’t think I’ve ever seen T2 take a bad shot- he’s usually overly passive, if anything.

by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Nov 16, 2009 7:58 PM CST up reply actions

Hope it stays that way.

Xavier also scares me a little for the same reasons. Just have to wait and see how it all plays out.

Xavier scares me most

because he’s been a high volume shooter his entire life. What happens when he isn’t hot and doesn’t get the touches he normally has to work through an off-game? I want to see how he responds when things aren’t flowing so easily for him.

I thought you knew that algebra was all razzamatazz. A Globetrotter always saves the good algebra for the final minutes.
