Open Game Thread :: Missouri vs. Nebraska
Sorry for the delay. It's a pretty frickin' important game for us Jayhawks, as it makes one of our North matchups more important and one less so.
I'm personally cheering for Missouri, partially for selfish reasons. I am hopefully getting to go to the Arrowhead game, so I would love it if that decided the North. So, yeah.

Win.
Hoping both teams just bludgeon each other to death, personally.
I thought you knew that algebra was all razzamatazz. A Globetrotter always saves the good algebra for the final minutes.
I missed it because of Facebook chatting
(lollllll), but Nebraska’s special teams apparently suck and Missouri somehow has a 2-0 lead. Weird. I thought I was done with baseball for the day.

MIssouri
looks all right on defense. It helps that Zac Lee kind of, you know, sucks.
And yes, I’m fine with solo threading this all night. It’s like a journal.

What a game so far
Neither team can get anything done on offense.
I wonder if the conditions have anything to do with it?

Sure
Run a slow-developing play at one of the best DT in the nation. Great offensive gameplan!

4 yard pass on 3rd and 10
What is with this movement in football that says “We don’t need to get first downs when we can just as easily punt it away!”. It reminds me of giving outs away in baseball.

Zac Lee
sucks downfield. Jesse Palmer can’t make up his mind. “THEY NEED TO THROW DEEP” and when they do “I DON’T LIKE THEM GIVING AWAY DOWNS LIKE THAT”. Make up your mind for once, Jesse.

Wow
You have slow developing running plays at Suh and then a QB with a balky ankle running an option. The Missouri Tigers!

Someone on the OGT

Nice

Didn't they learn anything from Varsity Blues?
I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.
I remember Brad Smith
getting hammered in the head when he was a freshman and they were playing OU at Columbia. Two guys had to lead him off the field, and he looked completely lost. One play later he was back in. A friend of mine who was an MU fan was irate about that, because he’d clearly had a concussion, and Pinkel put him back on the field.

Wow
I think Missouri’s most dangerous weapon right now is punting to Nebraska. That kid simply cannot catch a punt.

So have just been watching the game off and on

It's been pouring
and the ball looks slippery obviously, but the field seems fine. Conditions plus blundering by both QB’s.

Is this more terrible offense
or awesome defense?
Or a combination of the two plus some pretty terrible conditions?
Defense hasn't been tested on either team, imo.
Both QBs are playing horribly.

That was a crazy play.
They go for it on fourth down, a gimp QB runs it on the zone read and then it looks like he fumbles in the end zone. He might have been down. It would be awesome if they deny them the TD.

They brought in a bunch of old,

One of the best defensive teams ever and nobody won a Gold Glove? I felt Tulo should have won the ROY and Holliday MVP, but at least SOME case could be for other candidates in those races. Helton was a no-brainer that season, like Greinke is for the Cy Young.
And yes Cy Youngs >>>>> Gold Gloves, but that was the biggest WTF I could think of at the time.

I love defense
so it’s something I care a lot about. I personally care more about GG than Cy Youngs, simply for my tastes, but I realize Cy Youngs are a big deal.
Point being, I love defense and enjoy defenders more in all sports than offensive players. Thus me STILL being upset about it.

Buster Posey
One of the top prospects in baseball. Fred Lewis was actually decent as well. Out of all of your young outfielders, one will hopefully be a good starter, Schierholtz has good D and a cannon, if he can hit well enough.
We’ve got some good kids coming up now, after years of emptiness.
Insanity is just a state of mind.
Poser is a potential beast
but you can’t tell me you’re banking on a breakthrough from Fred Lewis as your hope for offensive improvement.

No, I'm not
But Randy Winn was a black hole on offense this year, easily replaceable in RF. A full year of Glassbones Sanchez vs Burriss(~600 OPS), and there will be an upgrade. Other than that, Lincecum and Cain and pray for rain.
Insanity is just a state of mind.
Hahaha
I really do like Fred Lewis ever since that cycle he hit against the Rockies, but man you guys seem like you’re locked into some bad contracts with mediocre players. Just get better so we can overtake the Dodgers. I hate them.

Agreed
Rowand and Zito will kill us the next few years. At least Renteria’s gone after this year. I really don’t trust Sabean to not make a stupid signing though. He’s due.
Are you guys set for a long time, or what’s up with the Rockies these days?
Insanity is just a state of mind.
We're in pretty good shape.
Next year was supposed to be our big “Tada!” instead of this year, but that should be fun. Marquis will probably walk after this year (sweet deal) and we have some of our best players locked into very reasonable deals over the next couple of years.
Our biggest order of business should be letting Atkins walk away without even asking him to stay, continuing to find the right guys for the bullpen, and finding a taker for Hawpe. An outfield of Seth Smith, Dexter Fowler, and Carlos Gonzalez would be a pretty awesome show. Our biggest prospects coming up are frontline talent starters, so with Cook, U-Ball, and JDLR coming back, the final two spots should be up for grabs with a guy like Francis coming back and the young guys vying for rotation spots, we could be really good. Like, 95 win good.

Lee is awful
Pressure him and he can’t make anything happen. Even Gabbert on a bum ankle can make things happen when pressured.
On this last series, Lee had time to throw and still looked awful.
Every team should do what Mizzou’s doing. Crowd the line and dare NU to make something happen in the passing game.

Lee is really bad. It makes me feel better about Cody Hawkins, who has totally manned up this year and played his ass off.

that I want Mizzou to win but it’s not working.
Hard to see more than 2 losses on NU’s schedule if they win this game.
Then again, Nebraska’s offense is looking like a big liability tonight.
Clarification
I meant 2 Big 12 losses for Nebraska if they win.
Before this game, in terms of winning the North
I thought it’d be best if MU won, I feel like they’d have a higher chance to drop another game or two.
They could win tonight
and still drop 3 games (@OSU, Texas, KU).

This game reminds me of the 2005 KU/OU game at Arrowhead
sans the rain. KU D just dominated Adrian Peterson, had like 15+ tackles for loss, but were such limp dicks on offense.
I was at that game
Painfull. Today’s KU team would have beaten that OU team by 14 at least. Our D shut them down, Gordon had a few picks. We botched a fake fieldgoal, threw a pick 6 on the opening drive, and had like 3 first downs the rest of the game. Ouch.
If only..
KU would have realized sooner that Swanson was the answer at QB (or at least the closest thing KU had to an answer at QB in 2005), KU might have won that game. Then again, I’ve heard that Swanson didn’t show up ready to play that year.
If I recall, it was after the OU game that Nick Reid could no longer hold back his frustration with the KU offense. He basically said a lot of the things that the fans were thinking.
NU 1st down!!!

I still say
we probably want need Mizzou to win this game.
Anybody have a good argument for why one team winning helps us more than the other???

Look at NU's scheudle
I could easily see them going 6-2 (with losses only to KU and OU). That would mean KU would need to go 6-2 to win the North. I’m completely confident in KU going 6-2.
Mizzou, on the other hand, could win tonight and still lose 3 games (OSU, Texas and KU).
Missouri needs to win
simply because I hate Nebraska more. That’s all.

Okay, help me out, guys
I’d like your opinion on this:
You’re up one point. You score a touchdown. Now you’re up 7. Why don’t you go for 2 to get up 9 and make it a two possession game?
It's rather ironic that people will actually have to pay money to see Michael Moore's new Anti-Capitalism film, don't you think?
That's my thinking
I just think the positives outweigh the negatives. You can’t lose, because no team is going to go for two when they’re down 1 anyway. You can only win.
That damn chart, though. Erg.
It's rather ironic that people will actually have to pay money to see Michael Moore's new Anti-Capitalism film, don't you think?
I'd say because this way...
you put your opponent in a position where they still have to score and get the 2pt to tie you….that’s not easy
Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.
Right, but if you don't make it they tie with a touchdown and a PAT
if you kick the extra point, not only do they have to score, they HAVE to make the two, just to tie. They stumble any were and you win.
yep...that's what I'm saying
Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.
But if you make it
They’ve got to do it twice! Maybe there’s a mathematical analysis to be done on this, but it seems to me that the benefits outweigh the potential liabilities.
It's rather ironic that people will actually have to pay money to see Michael Moore's new Anti-Capitalism film, don't you think?

Making it 9.
I don’t care about PAT success rates and all that. You make them score twice. It’s that simple.

Thank you, sir.
And yet, NOBODY does. NOBODY.
It's rather ironic that people will actually have to pay money to see Michael Moore's new Anti-Capitalism film, don't you think?
Sorry
but I disagree, by kicking the extra point you are forcing them to score twice (the 2 pt conversion being the 2nd) but if you don’t get it (a 45% chance) they only have to score once. You are over estimating the success rate of the 2 point conversion.
The debate rages on.
I don’t mind you being wrong. It’s okay with me.
I thought you knew that algebra was all razzamatazz. A Globetrotter always saves the good algebra for the final minutes.

your kicking the PAT
over a 99% success rate, forced them to go for two (success rate between 40% and 55%)
I have no idea.

North matchups
Normally, I’d agree with you on the matchups, but with Bryant becoming inelligible and OSU heading toward irrelevance once again, I’d say NU’s victory rebalances things. KU by far has the toughest schedule, with NU now being second, so it is good that mizzoo gets handicapped with a loss to balance things out a bit more right out of the gate.
KU vs. UT, OU, TT
NU vs. OU, TT, BU
MU vs. UT, OSU, BU
It stinks for BU (& KU) that Griffin so BU is that much less challenging for NU & MU. We could win all our North games, and still finish in second. We still need to sweep the North and take at least one from the South.
