Kansas Jayhawks vs. Oklahoma Sooners - Open Game Thread

Oklahoma Sooners at Kansas Jayhawks, Oct 24, 2009 2:30 PM CDT

If you can't be at Memorial Stadium why not be here?  The Rock Chalk Talk Open Game Thread for Kansas vs. Oklahoma is open for business.

Haven't seen RC this week so I'll get the OGT up and going.  Apologies RC if I'm jumping the gun on this. Anyway, our Jayhawks are coming off a tough road loss to the Colorado Buffaloes while the Sooners are dealing with the reality of a disappointing season.

Will Kansas come out and regain a little bit of confidence perhaps coming out with one of their biggest wins in the Mangino era?  Or will Oklahoma show that it still has some fight left in them and they are in fact every bit as good as people expected them to be from day one.

Make no mistake the Sooners might be one of the best 3-3 teams out there and this is going to take a great effort by our Jayhawks to come away with a win.  I myself am cautiously optimistic that we can put up a fight, stay in it late and have a chance to pull out this one at home putting us right back into the North race which is a little crazier than ever right now.  Rock Chalk, jump in and let's have at it.

lol'd.

This Ole Miss game is getting exciting.

I thought you knew that algebra was all razzamatazz. A Globetrotter always saves the good algebra for the final minutes.

Well

That’s not fair. It’s been exciting since the end of the second quarter.

Mallett with a big mistake taking the sack instead of throwing it away. Takes a long field goal attempt and turns it into a likely pooch punt.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on Oct 24, 2009 2:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Nope.

They kicked it anyway. 52 yard field goal hit the crossbar and went in and it was called back because of Delay of Game. Now they’re punting. Nice collapse.

I can't help but think if Arnaud and Robinson were in...

Iowa State has to have at least 7 more on the board.

by Owen Kemp on Oct 24, 2009 2:05 PM CDT reply actions

Here's how I look at it.

We were expected to start 6-0 then lose to Oklahoma before the season.

So as long as we win today, we make up for last week’s choke job, and everyone is happy with their life.

If we lose, though, we’ll need to win next week or something crazy. And I don’t see us winning next week in Lubbock. It’s a possibility, but winning this afternoon would be a helluva lot easier.

I think we will win. We might be the better team. We just can’t turn the ball over at a ridiculous pace or anything. Or in ridiculous situations.

Please win. With Nebraska losing in the 4th quarter, and Missouri almost assuredly losing tonight, we are far from out of the North race. Hell, a win today could put us in the driver’s seat for a week.

Except for the soon-to-be 3-1 Kansas State Wildcats. Who knows what that’s about.

by rockchalk on Oct 24, 2009 2:08 PM CDT reply actions

there he is...

sorry, didn’t know if College was keeping you busy so I threw the OGT up….

as far as the North, if NU loses today 4-4 could very well win this thing.

Howdy stranger!

Nice analysis, though I think OU is better than us, but a few breaks can certainly tip it our way.

CU is completely bumbling today, their punter has been averaging about 14 yards a kick, and while KSU has been unimpressive, I don’t think they could lose that game today even if Bill Snyder himself had bet a million bucks against them. What a hangover the Buffs have from last week.

by hunter s. royal on Oct 24, 2009 2:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah.

DiLallo has been a total fucking headcase since the blocked punt against Texas. He wasn’t that special before, but his delivery is so much quicker now that it’s costing him yardage in huge chunks.

How the hell do you turn the ball over 7 times in one game?

Much less do it and still only be down 2?

I mean, yeah, Iowa State probably is slightly underrated. But is it really that good of a win to win by 2 if your opponent turns the ball over 7 fucking times?

Holy shit.

On the plus side, we didn’t allow them to get a great push up the middle, hopefully that bodes well for the rest of the game.

Reesing can’t be staring down receivers all game or that’s not going to be the last INT.

by Owen Kemp on Oct 24, 2009 3:03 PM CDT up reply actions

This.

I have to believe with the spread offense being such a huge deal right now that defenses are getting coached up on how to defend against it all the time. I like this theory.

That first play would probably work now

But not that early, that free safety was lurking back there. Now with how we’ve run, hit some Kerry routes (as I call em), might be easier to hit someone over the top.

by KU Grad 08 on Oct 24, 2009 3:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah

The same thing happened with the West Coast Offense. Teams all started running it and then defenses began adjusting to it. It’s bound to happen.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on Oct 24, 2009 3:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Today is the fourth game in a row

and 5th of 7 that Reesing has thrown an INT. While you can look at the INTs increasing every year, you should also look at some of the positives. His completion % has also continued to rise, as has his Yards Per Attempt. I would also think that as he mastered the offense more and more and the coaches placed his trust in his playmaking ability, some of those INTs are a result of a playmaker trying to make some things happen. It goes with that style of QB, methinks.

I thought you knew that algebra was all razzamatazz. A Globetrotter always saves the good algebra for the final minutes.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on Oct 24, 2009 3:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah I'll buy that

We really ran the ball well his first year too, I think thats gotta help, he felt he didn’t have to take as many chances. Still, take the good and the bad together I spose.

by KU Grad 08 on Oct 24, 2009 3:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Doing some more digging

because I have the time, I see that Reesing had 13 INTs last year and only 4 games in which he did not throw one. However, half that total comes from multi INT games against OU, TTU, and MU. The OU game he was sacked 5 times (!) and looked like he just didn’t play that well (based on numbers alone). The TTU game the team was being blown out and had what might have been the worst game of his career with 3 INTs. The MU game, well, we all know about that game =p

After looking a bit, Reesing does throw his fair share of INTs, but over his career he’s had nearly 10,000 yards passing and over 80 TDs compared to just 27 INTs. Not too bad, actually.

I thought you knew that algebra was all razzamatazz. A Globetrotter always saves the good algebra for the final minutes.

In Detroit, I’m watching PSU @ U of M, I think that one had similar expectations to our game.

Brandon Graham is a hell of a DE. Blocked a punt just now.

That offensive system in the Big 10 is going to be similar to when Stoops brought his to the Big 12; no one was ready for it, and the catchup took time once everyone realized, hey, this is pretty good.

I don’t know if I’m the biggest fan of him yet, but he’s going to turn that program into a monster now that he’s survived the initial rush. Just not the monster it used to be under Bo or Carr.

Allowing Penn State to catch up to them pisses off the alum base

Lions couldn’t solve the ultra-physical offensive lines of Wisconsin, OSU, and Michigan for several years, but two in a row over Michigan and a shot at OSU in Happy Valley could erase the bad vibes of the Iowa game.

Is the Broyles kid really all that

or are the ’Hawks just making him look like Calvin Johnson?

he's a pretty good player...

our defense has done good today so I can’t fault them for him getting a few…he’s by far their best receiver.

I know this one is over...

but I wish our fans didn’t clear out like that…it doesn’t help the cause

anyone else notice on that replay of the pick 6....

everyone on the field pursued the guy returning the interception but Reesing…he unbuckled his helmet and walked toward the sideline….I don’t like that one bit.

Well

There are our two losses most people predicted. Run the table and we’re fine.

Beating Texas isn’t totally unrealistic, right? Right?

Insanity is just a state of mind.

wow

da ship be sinkin’…

this game was over after the first play.

and let me pre-empt the chorus stating that we can win in lubbock next week…near zero chance. this team is not coming together and it’s been evident since the southern miss game. we are on our heels and constantly a step behind the other teams we are playing.

whether it’s a loss of confidence or poor game-planning, this team is in a DEEP funk. this season is quickly turning into a disaster…we better hope that we catch nebraska or mizzou on an off day so we can get a 6th win and get into a bowl.

I absolutely love Mark Mangino but whatever they’re doing right now isn’t working…they’d better start doing some things differently with Todd because other teams seem to be on to whatever he’s doing.
