On its surface, this isn't that big of a deal- player that can't play this semester anyways it out until around December 1.

However, doesn't it seem like KU has had an awful lot of stress fractures the last couple of years? Obviously these guys push themselves to the limit day in and day out to become elite players, but is it possible that the training staff is letting the team down with poor stretching or treatment procedures?

Even scarier- are Adidas shoes causing this? Obviously the contract they gave us was great, since it supported the entire athletic department instead of just the men's basketball team. But if the gear isn't up to snuff, isn't that a big time problem?

Why have we had so many stress fractures?

seems like we’ve had this problem even going back to the Roy Williams era. Not sure what is to blame but I suppose it must be the nature of basketball because it doesn’t seem to happen in other sports.

I think it's obviously related

to playing on hardwood floors, plus someone of Withey’s size may be even more injury prone.

Stress fracture in the knee seems a bit odd. Usually you hear about them in the foot or lower leg.

It's not uncommon

in the NBA, they sometimes have to do something called micro-fracture surgery to fix it. Hopefully this is not the case for Withey, because it is usually a very serious operation with a long recovery period.(I believe Greg Oden had it and it kept him out for an entire year)

Quick Research

Players that have had a stress fracture the last couple of years:

Jeff Withey
Darrell Arthur
J. R. Giddens
Mario Little
David Padgett
Brady Morningstar
Sherron Collins
Xavier Henry (while in high school)

Well lets just hope

That he gets it fully healed now, because next year is when we’ll really need him after Cole leaves. The good thing is is since he can’t play till December 1st anyways and likely will be burried a little on the depth chart, he can really take his time and let this heal without being rushed back in.

Book this

Jeff Withey will never be a major contributor at KU. He may be a role player that helps out but not a guy who is making any all Big 12 lists. His career will be marred by injury and he’ll never really be able to develop past what he is right now, a little bit of an uncoordinated big man without natural scoring ability.

Chenowithesque???

Wow, you guys are cold-blooded today.

It’s not normal to be Withey’s size, and injuries could certainly hamper his career at KU, but I think I’ll hold off on the Chenowith comparisons for awhile, at least until I see the guy get into an official game! :)

mine was more a question...

his description reminded me of chenowith…but I wouldn’t dare draw that comparison until someone had earned it.

Understood.

That’s just a bad tag to hang on someone. Chenowith was pretty good his first couple years, but he really had a disastrous end to his KU career concluding with he and the fans taking multiple shots at each other and I hate to see someone stuck with such a negative association so early in his KU career.

I think a lot the Chenowith

stuff, he brought down on himself because he was a wee bit of a douche.

So, Esty, are you saying Withey is going to more like Eric Chenowith or Luke Axtell/Lester Earl?

Wait. Sarah Palin's in Hong Kong? But who's watching Russia?

by labbadabba on Oct 23, 2009 3:15 PM CDT up reply actions

ah yes...

much better comparison…Luke and Lester just really struggled with injuries whereas Chenowith struggled more with motivation.

I personally am planning on Withey being a solid player for us. Stress fracture probably just happened since the guy has put on some good weight and he’s hammering day in and day out underneath with some pretty serious big men.

In today's LJW

it was reported that Withey hurt himself in practice chasing a loose ball, so looks like it was a collision/accident sort of thing rather than a long-term stress injury, so that seems to be a good sign at least.

by hunter s. royal on Oct 23, 2009 3:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah you might say that

although I would agree that I can’t compare to him quite yet before I’ve seen a game, I will say that I just don’t have confidence that he’ll be a solid player for us, might be a bit harsh but I trust my instincts when it comes to basketball.
