Around SBN: Phil Mickelson Outshines Tiger Woods

Best in the country?

In the preseason, there was much talk about the combination of Dezmon Briscoe and Kerry Meier being one of the best wide receiver combos in the nation. In the two lists I saw, they were listed at second, which is pretty respectable.

In another list, I saw Reesing to Meier listed as the second best QB-Receiver connection, with only Colt McCoy to Jordan Shipley above them.

Now seven weeks into the season, I feel these ratings are insulting. There is no doubt in my mind that they deserve better. Michael Floyd is injured, so there goes the Golden Tate/Michael Floyd combination. As for Shipley and Mccoy, OU did a fine job of shutting them down last game.

Star-divide

Todd Reesing not only has the best receiver in the country, but he has the best two receivers in the country. Dezmon Briscoe leads the nation in yards per game, and Meier is second in catches per game. However, that statistic doesn't do Meier justice. He might be the most dangerous player in college football. He has over 1500 yards receiving, 1500 yards passing, and 500 yards rushing in his eventful career. If the Jayhawks ever implemented the Wildcat formation, he would be the prime candidate to receive the snap.  As for his receiving, his apparent lack of athleticism only makes him better. He is faster than he looks, and has excellent game speed. He always manages to find separation on big downs,  and his clutch playmaking can't be measured in stats. He plays smart, and as evidenced in the Mizzou game last year, he knows when to get to the endzone. He is elusive like a shadow, and defenses can never seem to find him until its too late.

If Meier is a shadow, Briscoe is a bolt of lightning. Everyone on the field knows where this guy is, but they cant stop him. He can jump a mile into the air, has incredibly soft hands, and has speed and acceleration like a stock car. His lateral quickness is unbelievable, and instead of cutting to the sideline, he loves the inside of the field. The most dangerous aspect of his game is his jump ball ability. If Reesing throws the ball in his direction, he will get it, or nobody gets it. The majority of the time, he gets it. He doesn't tolerate interceptions.

If only it would translate...

to more dominance on the scoreboard.

Yes there is little doubt now that these two are potent and probably the best duo in the country.

Dude.

Expecting more from those three at this point is just downright greedy. I know we’ve got some problems, but it’s not because of a lack of production out of Meier and Briscoe.

With Dez and Floyd going down, I don’t think there’s any grouping that can even compare to our corps.

I know...

all I’m saying is I wish we hadn’t lost last week.

I think Meier has replaced a lot of the loss of TE production after Fine graduated

If you look at our 2007 offense, we usually used 3 WR (Henry, Fields, Briscoe) and Fine at TE. I think with Kerry’s emergence as a WR in the middle of the field who grabs a lot of the 8 yard routes is similar to how we used Fine.

Next year without Kerry it’ll be nice if Biere/Seward etc and co step up and give us some productivity out of the TE position. Its nice to have someone who can give you that passing option and is also a really solid blocker.

No doubt

Couldn’t believe in pre-season that rivals had us listed as like the 4th best receiving core. Rediculous.
