Big 12 North Talk
So, after yesterday, what do we make of the Big 12 North picture? The three teams we all assumed should rule the division all lost in various manners. As of today, the mighty Wildcats of Little Manhattan have a commanding lead based on conference record. Can this hold up?
I don't really have a lot to say about this as of now. I'm more interested in getting a discussion going amongst the community- and supporters of other schools are more than welcome to add their two cents. Who do you think now has the inside shot at taking the North? What have you learned about the six teams? What would your "power rankings" of the North look like right now? How confident are you in your school's chances of winning this thing?
In case you were wondering, here's the current Big 12 North Standings for reference (sorry if the formatting sucks- Denver/RC, feel free to edit):
TEAM CONF RECORD: TOTAL RECORD:
Kansas State 2-1 4-3
Kansas 1-1 5-1
Nebraska 1-1 4-2
Colorado 1-1 2-4
Iowa State 1-2 4-3
Missouri 0-2 4-2

I think it comes down to the Kansas Nebraska game.
If Kansas defense picks it up, I think that game, and every other game, other than Texas, should very well be a win.

I think Nebraska probably has the inside track
NU and Mizzou both lost to one of the top four teams in the South, which was fairly predictable. Kansas lost to CU, a team that most thought they would beat. NU only has one game left against the South’s top four teams, while KU has three. I think that will be the difference.

Well I think KU will just have to beat its remaining North teams
If we do that we do no worse than 4-4. Who knows, that could win it this year if we have head to head wins against NU, MU and KSU, while MU and NU finish 4-4 as well. If that is possible.

The Big 12 North champion this year...
..wins a ticket to Dallas to tour the Cowboys’ new stadium before getting spanked by UT in the title game. Every team in the North is mediocre.

Is Texas really that great this year?
Many Longhorn fans I know aren’t exactly overwhelmingly confident that UT can run the table in the Big 12. I’ve heard them described as a “BCS defense with an average Mountain West offense.”
Colt McCoy isn’t the same force he was last year (a definite theme throughout the Big 12 it seems). They still have no real running game. And once OU took Shipley out of the game, UT was basically left floundering on offense.
I firmly believe that KU has more firepower on its offense than UT does this year. Unfortunately for the Jayhawks, their offense won’t be facing the UT offense- they’ll be facing the UT defense, which looks like the very definition of nasty. And luckily for the Longhorn offense, they’ll be facing a defense that on its best days might be described as “competent.”

Tough Road Ahead
Winning the North was a realistic possibility before last night. Now, it is an extremely tough challenge. It can be done, but we have to play with a sense of urgency on every snap. OU is beatable, but we have to bring it. They will be hungry after a 3-3 start. Tech will be tough, and I just don’t see a win in Austin. Our offense cannot sputter, as we did last night. We can’t wait around till the second half. What really scares me is the defense. We are 6 games into the sense and are subbing in offensive players on defense!!! My heart says we beat everyone except Texas, but my brain says we finish conference 4-4, good for 2nd in the North.

as i've said elsewhere
i’m having real trouble finding two more wins on this schedule. this team looks out of sync and there seems to be a sense of a little panic with the coaching staff as it pertains to the D.
at this point i would be happy to make it to a bowl, period.

I agree that there aren't two...
that you look at and say it’s a win…but other than Texas, there isn’t a game I look at and feel like we don’t have a chance.

So most people are writing off Mizzou?
Personally, I’ve been completely underwhelmed by this Nebraska team. They didn’t just lose to Tech at home- they got pantsed. They have no options at quarterback, and their defense’s reputation (outside of Suh, of course) has been padded by a pretty soft schedule (even VaTech, as good as they are overall, was downright inept on offense at that point in the season), IMO.
I feel like this is one of those crazy years in college football where the more we know, the less we understand.

I wouldn't write off Mizzou...
they play Texas this weekend in Columbia where anything could happen and then after that ever single game on their schedule is winnable. If they run the table that’s 5-3, but they’ll need Kansas to beat Nebraska most likely.
