This is your Open Game Thread for all things College Football until the Kansas game. A specific Kansas-Colorado thread will pop up an hour prior to kickoff, so be on the lookout for that.

But for now, this is your place to talk football. I will be here for part of the day, so I hope you join me. It'll be fun for sure.

So, normally, I don't get too excited over these big rivalry games...

i.e. tOSU-Mich… but the ones today, OU-UT, USC-ND, have me really fired up and ready to watch them. Should be a GREAT day of CFB today.

Also, I'm stretching my lead

in the Pick ’Em League, too. If Denver would quit putting games on the list that are played 3 hours after he sets the games for the week, I would hardly miss ANY every week. For the record, I would have picked Boise Thursday night. Let that be known. My lead would then be 4 currently.

True. I didn't make any picks until this morning.

Now, I’m 0 for 3 already.

I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.

Also, Late Night was EPIC.

We. Are. LOADED. It’s so ridiculous. The 5-on-5 scrimmage was 10 guys who would start on 99% of schools in the country. (Xavier didn’t even start.)

Quick Late Night THoughts
- Travis Releford has improved ALOT.
- One of the twins (forget which one) looks HUGE.
- Xavier is very well put-together.
- Elijah Johnson has HOPS. He floats in the air and hangs there.
- THomas Robinson out-manned Cole for a board or two. He’s gonna be a STUD, from day one.
- Tyshawn Taylor is a real cocky SOB. It’s good to have some swagger (See: U, The), but IMO, he is just TOO cocky. He is GOOD, though.
- Tyrel Reed can FLY for a white boy. For anybody, for that matter.
- Lew Perkins does NOT look good, AT ALL.
- THe renovated Fieldhouse looks very nice.
- The videos for this year will be, once again, EXTREMELY EPIC. 20 minutes straight of Jayhawks in the NBA, B2B2B2B2B Big XII Champs video and “Dream On”.
- Recruit Row got a HUGE ovation as the entered the arena just before the women started their skits. I can’t imagine that not bringing them to chills.
- Fans leave Late Night halfway through the scrimmage early, too. It’s not just the football “fans.” I don’t understand standing outside AFH for two hours (as I did), sitting through two hours of nothing, the women’s skits and scrimmages, the videos and then leaving after ten minutes of the men’s team. Whatever. I yelled at all the people around me leaving, “Hey, I’ll see all you guys at the first half of the next football game!” as the walked out.

So, all that said, I think we should be fairly respectable this year. I hope we blow a couple easy ones in December and one in conference and Bill uses it to fuel them.

by I need more Esteban on Oct 17, 2009 11:06 AM CDT up reply actions

I think you're totally right.

As bad as CU is, I’ve been having…. uneasy(?) thoughts about this one all week. They always play us tough. The defense HAS TO dominate against that putrid offense, otherwise we are going to get carved, sliced and diced 6 ways to a whorehouse next week.

There should be alot of Jayhawk fans there today, though, if it’s anything like the basketball games in Boulder.

by I need more Esteban on Oct 17, 2009 11:12 AM CDT up reply actions

Or, maybe we could just become so much better than them

that it isn’t really much of a rivalry anymore (see: basketball) so that nobody cares. Would be fine with me :)

But if both teams continue to improve, it could be close in 20 years.

Meh

Football injuries are a question of “when,” not “if.” And unlike Bradford, Cole still has areas of his game to work on (developing a more diverse low post game, for example)- I wouldn’t say it’s a “sure thing” that he should have gone into the draft.

by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Oct 17, 2009 11:30 AM CDT up reply actions

When you can be a lottery pick, you should go.

That said, I couldn’t be happier that he is back. Yes, he has things to work on, but he would have still been drafted extremely high.

lol can't have a CKC without KC - Nicholai Khabibulin (LN21)

by Andy Edwards on Oct 17, 2009 11:31 AM CDT up reply actions

Well...

Jordan Hill did kind of dominate Cole when we played Zona last year. Then the Raptors and the Bucks are both pretty much set at the center position. The Nets probably take him at 11.

Right now, NBAdraft.net has him going #5 next year. That’s a LOT more guaranteed money.

by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Oct 17, 2009 11:38 AM CDT up reply actions

I just have a feeling

He’s going higher than 5. Granted this year’s class is much much different than last year’s, but he’s better than Thabeet

Don't think so.

United are 1) in the lead again 2) got back Van der Sar today and Hargreaves next month, so that’s like two free transfers coming in and adding to a squad that was already 1st/2nd in the league all year already.

Good luck.

by Andy Edwards on Oct 17, 2009 1:45 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm glad you like him

A lot of the brits blame him for everything wrong with their national team for some reason. I’m friends with a lot of brits from when I lived in Europe, they’re always like that damned Hargreaves… I always tell them its not his fault your team has no creativity and offense

by KU Grad 08 on Oct 17, 2009 1:50 PM CDT up reply actions

But, they do.

Jermaine Defoe is a MACHINE at scoring goals. If I were to blame ANYBODY, it would be fucking Lampard and Gerrard in the middle for killing everything. Those two suck. Especially together.

It saddens me to say, but I think Rio has lost it. Too many injuries and he looks tenative out there. For both England and United. He is making mistakes EVERY match and costing goals.

Seriously the US needs to improve its D before the world cup, its leaky. Howard is the man but the defenders are all over the place and suck. And now Oneywu (sp?) is out a while. FML

We have an outside shot at being one of the seeds.

We won our region. And, don’t forget the strong showing in the Confederations Cup, too. I think FIFA will take that into consideration and we snag probably the 8th and final seed… Much as KU was the fourth #1 seed in ’08 in the tourney…..

Talent wise we have a shot

We need to play better and more organized. D has to get better fast. I also think the draw will be huge. I’m almost hoping we get a really effing good team and two teams we can beat. If we could pull a tie with the real good team…who knows. Some of the teams that normally scare the crap out of me, I feel we could knock off next year (i.e. Germany)

Gator offense seems like it should have so much more to it

but it’s Tebow left, Tebow right…and the kid needs to hold the ball higher up while in the pocket. NFL pass-rushers will strip him left and right.

Yeah Gonzalez or whatever his name is

He is a gamer. You’d think though with the effectiveness Florida and Tebow have running the ball, even average WRs would be able to find some openings downfield with the opposing team stacking 8 guys in the box every play.

by burntorangehorn on Oct 17, 2009 5:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, OU lost by a touchdown

In a sloppy, yet fairly competitive 21-14 game or whatever it was.

tOSU on the other hand, there is still a warrant out for the murder job Florida did on them the first time, and LSU smacked em pretty hard the second time. So I’d say tOSU was definitely worse.

What I’m saying is that it almost goes without saying that OU is going to lose every BCS bowl game in which they play. I should probably look it up to be sure, but wasn’t the USC beat-down in the championship game over OU the worst in BCS championship history?

I dunno

Florida’s win over Ohio State a few years back was pretty severe… I’d say the two are close for sure.

Wow

I know none of you saw it, but Jahvid Best just had an insane TD run from the Bears 9 yard line. It’ll be in the highlights somewhere. Reversed sides of the field, and was gone.

Insanity is just a state of mind.

Also a swiss cheese defense though.

Yeah. TBF though,

Nebraska fans clapped for us when we beat them, so I dunno. I’m still a little less harsh on them.

Did you see Pelini turn around and glare back at the crowd when he heard the boo? Priceless.

Seriously

Notre Dame announcers are TERRIBLE. JUST TERRIBLE. They have no idea what’s going on at all.

It just took them 10 minutes

To figure out that if there’s an intentional grounding penalty, it’s not a fumble.

YES!

Suck it, Notre Dame. Suck it, and keep on sucking it.
