Kansas Wins Ugly, 41-36

That was ugly. As Bill Simmons calls it, that was a Moral Defeat to be sure. Yikes.

That's all the commentary necessary for right now. Use this as your Open Game Thread for the rest of the day's action.

UCLA is self-destructing.

They were up 3-0 at half and should have been up A LOT more.

Oregon returned the opening kickoff for a TD, then had a apick six. Two scores in 26 seconds.

Now, UCLA just fumbled the ball.

Just got back from the game.....

what I don’t get is Huldon stuffed a run or two on ISU’s opening drive and then he makes one mistake and gets pulled from the game….for the rest of the game…..What in the hell??? Are the other guys we put out there much better? I just don’t get it…I see a TON of mistakes and yet the other guys don’t get pulled for the rest of the game…Huldon was stopping the run and he has I guess an assignment mix-up and he’s pulled…..Someone explain it to me….I just don’t get it

by jco8394 on Oct 10, 2009 4:30 PM CDT reply actions

Looked at the D's stats

Stucky and Thornton each had 14 tackles, Harris 7, Murphy about the same, etc. All our D-Lineman had about a tackle a piece, with the LB’s around the 7 mark. With the amount of running ISU did, would have like to have seen our Secondary guys had to have made fewer tackles with our lineman and linebackers gobbling up Arnaud and the RB more.

by KU Grad 08 on Oct 10, 2009 4:41 PM CDT reply actions

I just don't get it...

nearly every run play I saw the secondary was making the stop….Where are our linebackers? I mean are you kidding me?! That’s their job….good grief

by jco8394 on Oct 10, 2009 4:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah definitely

I know a lot of times there are only two of them out there, but still. We also had a LOT of missed tackles today. Waaaay too many missed tackles. We’d have Robinson, then he’d shake off and get another 10 yards.

Will need better tackling against some talented Colorado RBs next week

I think Tharp needs more PT

Arist is solid and has earned his minutes, but the other position: Dudley (?) Springer (?). Hell put Angus Burger Quigly in, something

by KU Grad 08 on Oct 10, 2009 5:39 PM CDT up reply actions

For those of us chillin' at Memorial today....

did you sense any intensity out of the ’Hawks? I was there and thought they looked flat, sort of went through the motions and put up 500 yards while yielding about the same. Made Arnaud look like Charlie Ward.

by JayhawkTom on Oct 10, 2009 5:07 PM CDT reply actions

There never is intensity....

when we have games that start at 11/11:30…I mean you don’t know what some of these guys could have been doing the night before….It’s college…..or I mean maybe I’m just saying this because I don’t like actually getting up before 11 on a Saturday :D

by jco8394 on Oct 10, 2009 5:23 PM CDT up reply actions

6 o clock in Boulder next week

I have a feeling we’ll learn a lot about this team next Saturday

by I need more Esteban on Oct 10, 2009 5:26 PM CDT up reply actions

No I agree

I’d say over the past few years, I’ve noticed we play worse during early start times than we do with later games. Last year we played really well against KState, but other than that it seemed we played worse during morning games.

by KU Grad 08 on Oct 10, 2009 5:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Interesting

I believe we were pretty intense when we beat a ranked MU team in 2003(?) at home. That was an 11am game.

by Rivethead on Oct 12, 2009 2:18 PM CDT up reply actions

That made me feel dirty

I was up there and the Louise’s West bloody marys wore off quickly. We just got pwned on defense. I agree with what Tom just wrote, there was really not much intensity from them.

I think this is what people were lamenting about during the non-con, and it almost came back to bite us today. After today, is there a single gimme on our schedule from here on out?

Wow.

I like to think that Mangino prepares his teams well

but I thought they looked neither enthusiastic nor prepared. Just sorta….there. I’ll take the W, but would hate to see that kind of demonstration repeated.

Worst case scenario,

we should just be able to outscore them, but the D today was disturbing.

by hunter s. royal on Oct 10, 2009 6:43 PM CDT up reply actions

I continue

To blame bowen here. Our ends palyed teriible contain we kept getting sealed off, yet bowen keeps trotting out the same defensive looks every series. We have 5 dbs on every play, its okay to play press coverage and jam the line, its okay to use that third safety as a roaming run stopper. Obviously Bowen feels it best to continue to back all our dbs aff the line. WAY off the line. Notice on ISUs final series the 3rd down play was an inside slant. The same play that burned us on a number of occasions, he played apress and jammed the WR. Not only was the timing thrown off causing an incompletion, but we nearly intercepted it. Bowen, please grow a pair and let your precious secondary play a little fucking football.

Wait. Sarah Palin's in Hong Kong? But who's watching Russia?

by labbadabba on Oct 10, 2009 6:56 PM CDT reply actions

I hope your kitty survived.

I also noticed we had a linebacker lined up right in front of the center at times, and nothing behind him. If a back got through the line, he was free for 20 yards before the DB’s could haul him down.

by hunter s. royal on Oct 10, 2009 7:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Clementina is okay.

I’ve taken to sticking needles in my Clint Bowen voodoo doll. I agree though, the second level was non-existant today.

by labbadabba on Oct 10, 2009 7:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Personell

I just wonder if we have the talent to play press coverage. Our “best” cb, Patterson, still hasn’t even figured out how to turn and find the ball when it’s being thrown to his guy. So even if for some reason the guy doesn’t make the catch, he’s just begging for Pass Interference calls for playing the man, not the ball.

Um, guys? Colorado is still wining…

Texas is in a little bit of trouble

I personally think Texas is overrated. Their O hasn’t looked that great all year. CU 14 Tex 3.

I’m petrified for next week the way CU is playing and the way we played today. Where did Colorado from earlier go?

by KU Grad 08 on Oct 10, 2009 7:27 PM CDT up reply actions

It's still the first half.

UT still has 2 and a half minutes to halt all momentum and score again before the half. I’d even put money that it happens.

I thought you knew that algebra was all razzamatazz. A Globetrotter always saves the good algebra for the final minutes.

Dunno

Texas sometimes has games like this- wasn’t Prince undefeated against Texas while he was coach of KState?

by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Oct 10, 2009 7:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Dan Hawkins is no Ron Prince.

I think I’m going to drop a coffee table on myself now. Or light myself on fire.

I wish KU had gone for it on their first driven instead of punting on 4th and 3. I think that first possession set a tone for the rest of the game. The crowd was really begging Mangino to keep the punt team on the sideline but instead we punt and wind up with a 20 yard net gain. I think that was the wrong call.

Also I agree with others on here, the linebackers were MIA all day. What was that all about?

The coaching staff really disappointed me today, coming off a bye week I thought the team would be better prepared. They were definitely out-coached by ISU today.

by ThirtyOne on Oct 10, 2009 8:02 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah, some bad playcalling too

Game is over at the end if on second and two we run Toben up the middle. I guarantee he gets it, or gets the third and less. Our offense gets way too cute sometimes. We better keep our O going all year, and the D needs to improve fast, force a few turnovers in the future, and get back to shutting down the run. Against CU it’ll be the same. If we stuff the run and get a few picks like last year, we’ll take care of business.

Go Colorado and Go LSU.

Please, please, please, please.

well...

looks like we may not see him…Dan Hawkins just pulled the redshirt on the backup Sophomore Tyler Hansen…played a bit against us last year in Lawrence. He’s seen as a better running than Hawkins but not sure if he improves their passing game.

Gotta suck when your dad benches you

Family interactions gotta be interesting for a while. I wouldn’t ever want to play for my dad, just be too awkward if I sucked (which I would because, well its me)

If anybody's around,

Check out CU- UT on ESPN gamecast right now. This drive is really something of a beauty-

6 straight accepted penalties
Incomplete pass
Sack (loss of 11)
34 yard net punt.

by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Oct 10, 2009 9:10 PM CDT reply actions

watched it...

ugly…Hawkins pulled a redshirt on his unprepared backup quarterback in a situation where he couldn’t really do anything as the game was getting away from CU…another on a list of poor decisions by the CU staff this year.

I will say though, expect Hansen as the starting QB next week when we head to Boulder

I'm pretty sure I could be put in as a Tech qb

And probably fare better than, oh, say Cody Hawkins :)

by KU Grad 08 on Oct 10, 2009 9:49 PM CDT up reply actions

On that same note

I’m pretty sure my flag football team would have put some points up today against the KU D…

Fuck

I wish the CU meltdown wasn’t so predictable.

The O was good the D was Bad

but no one has commented on Jake being missing again. Toben needs a break, and really disappointing to think that we don’t have another RB capable of playing at least a few downs here and there.

Toben needs a break?

We just came off a bye week. That WAS our break!
