Back to Kansas!!!

The Kansas recruiting momentum continues and this time it's someone we thought we lost.  The JayhawkSlant has broken another big story this afternoon with the news that Kevin Young out of Olathe North has recommitted to the Kansas Jayhawks.

Those that followed his recruitment know that this one had a lot of emotions involved and after originally committing to the Jayhawks, Young change his verbal to Nebraska shortly after a visit over Thanksgiving.

I'm not sure anyone thought there was a chance this one would reverse itself, but it has and Kevin will be staying closer to home.  Great news for the Jayhawks, great news for Kevin and check out the full story on the Slant if you have the opportunity.  Kevin is a mid-year graduate so he and Jordan Webb will both be on campus very soon to get things going in what we all hope will be a couple of very successful KU football careers.

Nice, but...

I thought Mangino didn’t let people recommit. I mean, I’m glad he was able to, but I heard there was some sort of unofficial policy or something.

Insanity is just a state of mind.

I'm going with the theory ...

that he just got caught up in the emotion of the NU/CU game and made a snap decision. So, maybe Mangino was willing to make an exception.

Young should have been at Arrowhead that weekend anyway, but it’s a nice get and I think a way better fit for Kevin if he does actually end up with KU.

Here is my theory on the unwritten no looking around rule...

at Kansas we have never been in a position to get into a recruiting battle with the big boys and win. So if a guy started with Kansas then took a visit to OU, NU something and committed there we were likely out of it anyway so as fans we never saw a change.

Now we can battle with these guys. I still think the staff takes a pretty tough stance with commitments and what that means, but let’s be honest if you’ve got a division 1 level player in your backyard that is lost to a division foe…you continue to pursue that and take it if you can.

We are beginning to battle a different caliber of school for recruits and battle for a different level of player. Teams will be taking shots at our guys all year long. Now we will never get jerked around like Miami is getting by Bryce Brown, but things like with Young would not be out of the realm of acceptability if a player is on the staff really believes in.

Also with regards to Young...

this is much bigger than the player. On paper with limited scholarships if you had said hey we’re going to take a 3-Star HS defensive end, I probably would have rather held out for some of the others.

This however is about beating out some big name offers to keep an In-State kid at home. A lot of schools see a ton of potential with Young and if you take one quick look at his offer sheet, this is a kid we lose 10 times out of 10 in the past. This sends a message locally and is big in my mind for future recruiting in the KC area and the state of Kansas recruiting.

We went toe to toe w/the big boys…won the early rounds, got our ass handed to us in the middle but won it late and that’s what matters

Great news

I was kinda mad when we lost him but good to see he made the right decision.

obviously the..."right decision" is...

a bit arbitrary, but I spoke with Kevin briefly last night and he seems relieved, excited about his decision, and in general very excited about the direction of Kansas football including the hiring of Miller…all that said, you’re right, this was the right decision.
