RCT Readers Choice Awards; Defensive MVP

 Pee-wee-football-trophies_medium

"RCT Readers Choice Awards"

The second postseason honor awarded by the RCT readers will be that of the defensive MVP.  I'll be honest coming up with the offensive candidates was fairly easy, defensively I can't necessarily say the same.  I tried to make sure each unit was represented and I think with that in mind we should have the best 3 nominees.

It was an up and down year for the Jayhawk defense.  There were great performances and gutsy games but as a whole who had the best season?

The nominees for the 2008 RCT Readers Choice Defensive MVP are...

Poll
Kansas Defensive MVP of 2008?
James Holt - 105 Tackles, 58 Solo, 19 TFL, 10 Sacks, 6 FF, 2 FR, 1 INT
16 votes
Darrell Stuckey - 98 Tackles, 60 Solo, 5 TFL, 5 INT's, 2FF, 7 Pass Breakups
18 votes
Jake Laptad - 38 Tackels, 9 TFL, 8 Sacks, 1 Forced Fumble, 2 Safeties

My vote went to James Holt...

Great year statistically and as a senior leader to boot. Coming into the season he was probably the most unheralded of the three linebackers but in the end had the best year.

Now a great argument could be made for Darrell Stuckey as well. He was critical to some big games, namely Missouri and I would put all I have on this guy being the clear cut Captain and defensive leader in 2009.

Holt was great but Stuckey was key in the biggest game of the year.

The Missouri win turned our year around. Lose that, and it would be widely seen as a disappointing season. Stuckey was everywhere in that game, and his picks really stopped Missouri’s momentum at crucial times. The momentum carried over to the bowl win, and it seems to have given recruiting a nice boost.

All excellent points...and I can't argue with anything you said...

Did Holt pick one in that game…seems to me he did, but my memory is fuzzy this morning.

This was a tough one for me...

I knew Stuckey would be a choice and I knew as soon as the poll came up I would pull the lever for Stuckey. But then I looked at Holt’s numbers (granted his amazing Insight Bowl numbers may have skewed things). Still, Stuckey was big in the early going and was a solid safety for most of the season. He came up huge in the Mizzou game and Hunter, he WAS pivotal in turning our season around.

There’s two ways to look at this. Who had the most impactful season on D? Stuckey. Who had the greater body of work? Holt. Using this line of thought, I ended up voting for Holt.

2 votes now

And I voted Stuckey. I mean, Holt was great. But Stuckey held the D together. Without him, there’s a massive hole. Holt’s versatility almost convinced me, but not quite.

Insanity is just a state of mind.

someone might want to call James and tell him he get’s 1 vote, so he better vote for himself.

Darrell Stuckey by a Nose...

Darrell if you ever read this congrats for winning the RCT Readers Choice…your 5 inch pee wee football trophy stating as much is in the mail…if you don’t get it, I’d check with Jake Laptad…he might have stolen it.
