2009 Football: Get Excited

The 2008 football season is over and most of us ended up being pretty happy with the results, following 2 wins against our rival Mizzouri, and a second straight bowl win against Minnesota in Tempe.  A final 8-5 record might be a shade under what some had hoped, I'll admit I had some higher expectations that may have been a little unrealistic.  But after seeing what the Big 12 South accomplished this year, I think the Hawks can be pretty happy with the 2008 season.  Ku exploded on offense once again this season with virtually no senior skill position players.  It's time to start thinking 2009 and it really cannot come soon enough.

Hopefully this isn't too long, but I got pumped about 09 football.

Star-divide

Offense

It all starts up front right?  A good offensive line is where it all begins and is the key to a good football team.  Look at Oklahoma; they have an offensive line that is said to have 5 NFL players on it and they are in the National Championship game.  Here's how the O-Line looks for '09

Incumbent's - Tackles: Jeff Spikes (RS SO) Jeremiah Hatch (RS SO)

These guys really improved this season.  Remember how we couldn't run the ball at all in the non-con, and how Reesing was always under diress?  Well these guys really improved to solidify the outside, one of the most important for protecting the QB.

Leaving - Everyone else: G's Mayes and Hartley, C Ryan Cantrell

No doubt these seniors had a hand in the development in the 2 freshman starters this season.  They will be missed but it's time to move on.  So who will replace them?  That remains to be seen, but here are candidates.

OL - Mix any one of these guys in, the one thing you will notice, we are young at OL.  Best Candidates to start: Sal Capra (RS JR), Ian Wolfe (RS JR), Carl Wilson (RS JR)

Other Candidates: Nathan D'Cunha (SR, anyone know if he redshirted this season?), Brad Thorson (JR), and a load of freshman this season that I don't know too much about: J.D Hill (Tampa), Ben Lueken (St. Louis), Trevor Marrongelli (Austin), John Williams (Tulsa), and Joe Semple (Illinois).  It's a youthful group and let's hope that they are working very hard this season to crack this competitive bunch.  I'm not sure who is going to emerge from these players, but, if any of you have opinions or inside knowledge on who has the inside track to replace anyone at any position, throw in your 2 cents.

QB - Todd Reesing.  This is going to be short.  We all know how amazing Todd Reesing is.  3888 yds passing 32 TDs 13 Ints, including every passing record in Kansas history.  Most importantly is this stat, 20-6.  That is KU's record in the last 2 seasons with Reesing at QB.  He will have major expectations next year and the question will be if he can handle them.  I think so, let's just hope that he stays healthy and QB is not something we will have to worry about.

Mystery for '09.  Who emerges as #2 QB?  Tyler Lawrence will be a Junior, Kale Pick a RS Freshman, and then there are two, 3 star QB's coming in the new class.  One would expect those 2 to be redshirted, but you never know.  Let's not have Kerry Meier be our # 2 anymore, he is an NFL type receiver.

RBs - Jake Sharp (SR), Jocques Crawford (SR)

Jake Sharp ended up having a very good season after a very slow start to non-con.  A lot of that can be attributed to 2 RS freshman tackles not being ready for action.  Sharp finished the season with 860 yds rushing, a 4.6/carry avg, and 12 TDs.  He will be the featured back going into next season, as Crawford has not impressed in his short time here.  Sharp is the type of back that could really use some help, so who will join him?

Everyone around here knows about the big 4 star pickup the staff got last week in, Toben Opurum, a 6-2, 229 lbs back from Plano Texas.  This kid is already drawing Brandon McAnderson comparisons and will have plenty of opportunity to play next season.  The other is a smaller back, Deshaun Sands, son of former KU RB Tony Sands.  Deshaun is 5-9, 175 and runs a 4.5 forty.  The guess for me is that he will be redshirted but you never know.  If he impresses in the summer, he could be in the mix.

WRs - Dezmon Briscoe (JR), Kerry Meier (SR), Jonathon Wilson (JR)

These are the constants.  Dezmon Briscoe is a serious NFL talent and will probably be a Pre-Season All-American selection.  Kerry Meier has the best hands of any WR I've seen at KU and should really start practicing with the receivers.  Wilson is one of my favorites and has some really big play capabilities (See South Florida game).  Briscoe and Meier are the game changers, though, they combined for over 2000 yrds receiving, 23 Td's and almost 200 catches.  The rest of the group is where things get interesting, because as KU fans know, we will need 5 receivers to run our offense.

Wildcards: I know hardly anything about these guys, so here is where I need some help on who you all think jumps in next year to contribute: Raimond Pendleton (RS SR)  I hope not but he has the most experience.  Tertevanian Ingram (RS JR) A name I've heard for the last few years, but we've yet to see much from him.  Reece Petty (RS JR), Willie O'Quinn (SO), Jack Dowdell (SO), and Rod Harris Jr. (JR) are all crapshoots for me and then there is whether or not Daymond Patterson is going to return to WR.  He is an explosive playmaker but is pretty small.  He really saved our secondary by converting to CB for conference play.  KU currently has some very highly rated DBs coming in according to Rivals, will Daymond move back?

Finally we have the recent committments Erick McGriff and Chris Omigie.  I think one of these guys will see the field next season.  They are big guys who could really provide another nice Briscoe-like target.

The Offense is of no one's worry at the moment.  Every KU fan should and will be confident that our offense can be even better than 2008.  The one question mark, that interior offensive line.  Being Big 12 North Champions will really be decided by how well KU's defense can perform.

Defense:

Kansas's defense will largely hang on whether a new group of linebackers can play against Big 12 spread offenses and if a defensive line that showed some late season promise can get better with experience and a few new added pieces.

Defensive line:  Incumbents: Jamal Greene (JR), Caleb Blakesly (RS SR), Darius Parish (SO), Jake Laptad (JR), Maxwell Onyegbule (SR).

This group showed some promise and there were a few real young guys there, especially at the DT spots.  If they can get bigger and stronger in the offseason, they could really solidify the middle.  Max Onyegbule showed flashes at times of being a force in pass rush.  The same can be said for the still young, Jake Laptad.

Wildcard: Quentin Woods (Juco Transfer)  6-6, 245 lbs, and a 4.65 forty.  Juco guys are always a crap shoot but this guy will have some expectations to come in and provide immediate help in the pass rush game.

Tyrone Sellers (True Freshman) 6-4, 215 lbs, 33 inch vertical, and a 3.55 GPA in high school.  This kid just seems like an athlete and he is a definite Rock Chalk Talk favorite after his interview with DenverJHawk last month.  http://www.rockchalktalk.com/2008/10/17/636800/rock-chalk-talk-with-2009

Randall Dent (True Freshman) 6-4, 256, he is listed as a DE in high school but with that weight he might end up being a DT.  Who knows, but he is definitely someone to watch for.

Defensive line is huge for next years team and I think it looks like a good group we're going to have.

Linebackers:  It's well documented that this will be Kansas's biggest question mark next season.  Who will replace Mortensen, Rivera, and Holt?  My thoughts are that we need to get faster at linebacker.  The Big 12 spread offenses tore apart our 3 linebackers at times and it's no wonder that there best games came in a bowl game where they played a run heavy Minnesota offense.  I love the move by Coach Mangino to put Angus Quigley at linebacker.  He is my wildcard next year to be an impact guy.  We all so his ability to hit against Texas when he took out there safety on a run play.  He's got speed and size and I think he'd be perfect against the spread.

Guys competing for spots: Arist Wright (RS SR, one of the few guys that got action besides the big 3 this season, expect him to start.) Justin Springer (JR, let's hope he can recover from his injury and he will likely be a starter), Drew Dudley (JR), Jake Schermer (RS SR).  The rest of the guys are a bunch of either sophomores or juniors that I've never heard of.  If anyone has any information on other guys getting a chance, please say so.  Huldon Tharp from Mulvane, KS is the only impact LB coming in this class.

Secondary: This is going to be the most competitive and interesting group to watch next season in my opinion.  We've got a lot of guys coming back, and we've got a lot of guys coming in.

Returners: Darrell Stuckey at Safety (SR)  We all know him and we all love him.  The Kansas City native will undoubtedly be a Preseason All Big 12 selection and will probably have pre-season All-American consideration.  Philip Strozier likely starts pre-season as the other safety.

Justin Thornton (SR) As long as he takes care of whatever disciplinary actions that kept him out of the Insight Bowl, he'll likely be the only known starter at CB.  He made a nice transition from safety to the position and his experience will be important.

After this, it is a total crapshoot.  Will Daymond Patterson stay at Corner or move back to WR?  Who will play out of the guys that saw playing time this season? Chris Harris (JR) had a very dissipointing season, Corrigan Powell (SO) and Isiah Barfield (RS SO) are young guys expected to contribute.

Then there are the incoming freshman.  According to Rivals.com, KU has the 8th ranked class of DBs coming in next season.  Number 8!  One 4 star guy and four 3 stars.  Prinze Kande, Darian Kelly, Dexter Linton, Tyler Patmon, and Calvin Rubles make up the class.  Summer ball should be very fun to keep track of!

Finally I want to mention recruiting.  With some time left, and Ronnie Wingo yet to decide (wow it would be amazing if we got him), Ku has the #33 ranked class in Rivals, the best Mangino has had at his time at KU.  We all know that these rankings don't mean a whole lot, but they are a measuring stick.  And look what Mangino and staff have done with lesser ranked players.  The program is turning the corner, and I believe Reesing and company's final season at KU will be a very special one.

Who have I left off? Anyone that you guys think will really make an impact next season?  Any record predictions?

Hey, I know we are about to get into basketball pretty thick around here and that is all welcomed.  But anyone got one last football discussion before Spring Ball?

I'm glad you did this one I had the same thought...I'll give you my quick rundown of the positions, with more details later on down the line.

Starting w/the offense…

Offensive line…Here is my hope, Jeff Spikes develops enough to move back to the Left Tackle. Ben Leuken who played spot minutes as a true freshman grabs the o-line spot…he’s been widely reported a workout warrior so I look forward to seeing the development. This allows Hatch to move to a more natural position at Guard w/either a the surprising Sal Capra or a RS FR John Williams at the other guard spot. In the middle Brad Thorson will take over. This guy was backup at Wisconsin as a freshman and is more than capable to fill the role. As a recap…Spikes, Capra/Williams, Thorson, Hatch, Leuken…now there is a chance the tackles stay put obviously but this would be ideal in many minds.

QB-set

RB-Sharp will obviously be a factor and I don’t want to count out Crawford yet. He seemed to look a lot more comfortable late in the year and with a full offseason I just have a good feeling about him next year. If not…Opurum, Rell Lewis or if we pull a surprise in Wingo all could be factors.

WR-You’ve mentioned the obvious…here’s my thoughts on the others. Rod Harris has been highly spoken of by his teammates and could be a nice addition to the unit. I could see Patterson making the move back over but that’s very much up in the air after the improvement he has shown. Biere will be a bigger factor next year at TE…solid true freshman campaign and he could be very good next year. Also look for AJ Steward to be a factor at that spot, he’s a determined kid with a lot of athleticism. Anyone else would be pure speculation at this point we’ll have to see after spring ball.

Moving onto defense…

D-Line could become a much stronger asset next year…Jamal Greene, Darius Parish, Caleb Blakesly, Richard Johnson and JUCO Travis Stephens will be a strong DT rotation. Duane Zlatnik has also gotten good reviews as a redshirt and up to 300 pounds now could see minutes. At the end spots Laptad, Onyegbule seem to be coming into their own. Add into the mix Quinten Woods and one of the other names out there and the unit could be pretty solid. These are the guys I think contribute meaningful time. Sellers and Dent will likely need a redshirt to put on some weight. Two other possibilities are DJ Marshall and Tanner Hawkinson both redshirting this year and we’ll have to see what they turn in this spring.

LB’s – Running 2nd team at the Insight Bowl was Arist Wright, Steven Johnson and Jake Shermer. If Springer fully recovers we’ll likely see him in the middle. Young guys that could also make an impact…Josh Richardson, tall athletic redshirting this year, also Julian Jones…will be a true freshman but is apparently a specimen physically.

DB’s – The only position for debate here is whether or not Patterson moves back to O. Powell, Brown, Barfield, Murphy, Harris and Rubles will all have a shot at this . I’d leave Patterson but I’m hopeful one of these other guys steps up we can move Patterson back. Additional players here…Lubbock Smith reportedly had a strong redshirt year. In terms of true freshman I would be interested in what Prinz Kande can do and possibly Dexter Linton. Others might need a shirt.

Record prediction…super early and with no explanation here are my thoughts…

Norther Co – W
UTEP – W
Duke – W
Southern Miss. – W
ISU – W
@Colorado 50/50
OU 50/50
@Texas Tech 50/50
@K-State – W
Nebraska – W
@Texas – L
Missouri 50/50

First glance that’s 7 wins 1 loss and 4 50/50 games…win half the 50/50’s and that puts us at 9-3 overall 5-3 in the Big 12…win the right ones and that should get us the North and a shot at the South Champion.

Again…thanks for the post and I look forward to hearing from others.

good stuff

There are so many young players that I don’t know much about that I’d like to hear more about. Obviously that won’t happen until Spring Ball, though.

Spring ball will be a good time to learn about the young guys...

and I’m also trying to setup some interviews w/players potentially so we can get to know some of the young guys and get their thoughts.

I don't know

considering the Defense dominated that spring game last year…

GREAT breakdown of the '09 team

I think between Esteban and Denver, you guys just about covered it. Only a couple (which now while proofing my post, I felt necessary to interject here and say, "MANY") little tidbits of my own that I’d like to throw in there:

Stating the obvious, Todd-God Reesing is INCREDIBLE. I have nothing but the utmost faith in him to deliver a solid senior year. Not to be a Debbie-Downer, but Misery fans had the exact same feeling about DanielS going into this past season. But I don’t see Todd self-destructing as DanielS did. (He doesn’t eat boogers, anyway.) It would be very nice if Pick could come in and win the #2 job. That way during the early part of the season he can come in and get some PT and game experience, building for the future, as he will likely be the starter in ’10, although I absolutely drool over the though of Christian Matthews running our wide open high octane attack. Imagine what he could do with his athletic ability!!

RB: Obviously Sharp will go into the season #1, but after going back and watching some of Joc’s HS and JUCO film, I almost can’t envision a way that he doesn’t end the season getting more carries a game than Sharp. Jake is versatile enough that OCEW can use him in a variety of ways to get him the ball. He can be lined up in the slot, used as an HBack, etc. But he IS a guy that we NEED to get the ball to 15-18 times a game, somehow. But Crawford’s upside, in my eyes, is just tremendous. You don’t win Nat’l JUCO POY by being a slouch.

WR: Briscoe, Meier, Wilson are all locks, obviously. As I just mentioned, I think once Joc comes along Sharp could be used to fill the slot at times. I look for Daymond Patterson to stay at CB. He had WAY too much of an impact when he switched to take that away from the D, especially in the pass-happy Big 12. Pendleton will likely be the #4 option (although I’m with Esteban in saying, “I hope not.”) The 5th guy that will fill out the spread?? I’ll give the nod to Xavier Rambo, based solely on the fact that 1) he has a COOL AS HELL name 2) he went to the same HS as Darrell Arthur. (I know nothing about him or most of the other guys on the roster.)

Candidate for Big 12 Newcomer of the Year: Chris Omigie (BEAST)

http://www.martinfootball.com/Football/Gallery/Game20Photo20Gallery/Varsity20vs20Bowie/images/Martin%20DSC_5080.jpg

He LITERALLY looks like a man among boys, and that is in Texas HS football. I know Rivals rates Erick McGriff (Crime Pup) higher, but comparing films and going with gut instinct, I think Omigie contributes as soon as given the chance and McGriff redshirts.

TE: Just looked up A.J. Steward’s profile coming out of HS on Rivals and compared it to what he is listed at now: 6’4" 210 in ‘07, 6’4" 240 now. I like him to get a good shot to play, seeing as he is more athletic and more of a receiver than Biere. Biere, while very good, was HCMM’s preferential choice probably because he is a better blocker and we needed help there this year.

OL: Spikes, Williams, Thorson, Hatch, Leuken. Just seems to make sense that way.

DL: Will be much improved, based on Addition-by-Subtraction in my eyes. Minus Brorseon & Larson= More pass rush by default. This was one of the biggest things that bugged me this past year was why they continually ran those two out there game after game. I understand being Seniors and having been hard working, dedicated members of the team, but Onyegbule and Laptad would have (and did) provide(d) a better pass rush, while also building towards the future. DE rotation should be MO, JL, Quintin Woods who looks to be a freak, and hopefully Hawkinson (would be HUGE to get a RS FR some time in ’09 as he will be a key contributor in ’11 after the JUCO guys of this year are gone.)

Randall Dent will be a DT for sure. JUCO recruit Travis Stephens, 6’3" 265, was told to come in “as big as possible” by the coaching staff, so he will be a DT as well. Blakesley and Greene would start for me at DT, with Parish and Zlatnik getting their fair share of reps.

LB: Gets a little hairy for me here. Schermer, Springer, Wright are the obvious choices. But, really, after lurking on a few threads over on The Slant, I think I am in favor of the “Rover LB” position. Sort of a LB/S hybrid. Now I’m not totally sure who this should be, but in the Big 12, I find it almost necessary to keep up with the strong offenses. Thinking back now about the Misery games that I watched this year, I realized that really the only thing they did to get the ball to Maclin (other than reverses) at WR was a quick crossing slant in front of the LB’s and let him wiggle and dash his way past. With more of a S playing the wide side of the field at LB, I think this would be much harder to accomplish. This doesn’t only pertain to Maclin, but Broyles (OU), Detron Lewis (TTU), Bryant (OSU), Collins and Kirkendoll (UT) too. Possible candidates, anybody?? Does Oguntodu have the athleticism to fill such a spot? He has the measurables at 6’0" 220. I think Stuckey would look GREAT in that spot, but he is set in stone at S.

DB: Stuckey and Strozier at the two S spots. I’d like to see Lubbock Smith on the fiels as much as possible though. Guy has great upside. Thornton (assuming he get out of MM’s doghouse) and Patterson at CB. Also would like to see Corrigan Powell in there too. I don’t think the freshmen should see too much of the field this year. I realize they are the #8 DB corp of recruits, but don’t get too caught up in that and expect immediate results. This IS the Big 12 and it takes a while to get to the level where they are not a liability. These offensive schemes are complex and i hope MM procedes with caution using the young guys.

ST: You guys forgot to include this. K: Branstetter was solid and I hope he gets stronger this offseason and adds another 5-7 yards of range to go along with his above average accuracy. P: Alonso Rojas was absolutely brilliant down the stretch this year. I remember him shanking one in the USF game that really hurt us, and from then on, they went to that rugby style kick and he killed opposing teams. PR: I liked DP this year, but he ran backwards a bit too much for my liking (but I’m just knit-picking at this point). KR: I have no idea, to be honest. I would LOVE to see Dez return kicks, as I think he could be a huge asset back there and force teams to pooch it to the 35 everytime as Minnesota did, but in any event that they ACTUALLY kick it to him, I think returning kickoffs puts our greatest offensive weapon at too great of a risk. IDEA: Clone him. That way we have one to play WR and one at KR.

OK, I know that was long, so sorry if you guys actually read all of it ;)

That is sick, man

He’s like a freaking alien or something. Look how long his arms are. His hands are at the same height as #10 but he’s 8 inches taller. Just sick, man.

I'm working on an interview w/him for next week...

first question I had after seeing this pic…what is his wingspan?? If I were a quarterback I would be pretty pumped about a target like that…reminds me of TO’s freakish length.

the Rover S/LB position does seem to be a popular trend...

or at least the thought of it is. Josh Richardson would probably fit the bill for that with his athleticism. Both Steven Johnson and Springer are likely quicker at the MLB spot than Mortensen. Also we all forgot Quigley who appears to be making the move to LB next year. Another name that has floated around for a few years is Olaiten Oguntodo. Now I’m not holding my breath but he has the size and speed to play this spot.

No way that was not too long

great stuff. I think your point about the rover is right on. I know he would be raw, but I still think Quigley would be a great candidate for this spot. He would have to be a quick learner and work real hard, but he seems like the perfect combination of size and speed.

Also, those pics are crazy, Omigie is huge.

Great bunch of posts!

Love the enthusiasm and effort shown here. It will take me quite a while to digest all this but it looks like great reference points for next year. From my amateurish eye next year looks fantastic despite the rough south schedule. Reesing will go down in KU history with Sayers, Hadl, Riggins and a favorite from my school days, Nolan Cromwell. The main concern for me is the interior offensive line. If we can patch that up the tackles should be fine. I think the d-line may be good enough to mitigate the loss of the linebackers and we have lots of options in the secondary fortunately. I’ll go with an early prediction of 9-3 and the first big 12 north title for the phat man.

by hunter s. royal on Jan 7, 2009 10:44 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Two points you mention...

one the offensive line…we will have more raw talent on the interior than we have in many years, but it will be very inexperienced. Once they Gel the unit for 09’ and 10’ could be very stout.

Defensive line…your exactly right with an improved push from a front four everyone behind get’s better. Secondary looks better, and our inexperienced linebackers will look better.

Yes -

I am definately excited about our D-Line. With our secondary if we can get a push with our front four we will have a VERY tough defense. Even if our LB’s arn’t as good. This game is won in the trenches. Its weird. I’m a KU fan so by default I’m a college basketball fan but I just can’t wait for college football to start again…

it seems that the LB spot is one you can hide a bit.

not just from a talent perspective but also in terms of addressing our needs.

Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.

I also like that even though

our pool of recruits may be more shallow than some other schools, Mangino still recruits kids with some character. There’s always a bad apple or two but by and large our kids have been good kids.

by labbadabba on Jan 7, 2009 11:14 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I also think Mangino

is taking a very similar approach to Randy Shannon at Miami. All year they talked about how he was bringing in kids from WINNING HS programs and kids that KNEW HOW to win. I think MM is doing much of the same. But we will have to see if he continues that way as the program elevates its national level and those high end recruits become available to us, whether or not he sticks with guys that fit, or guys that he thinks he can make fit…

by KCsince88 on Jan 7, 2009 11:21 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I for one hope Mangenius...

regardless of our level continues to recruit guys that fit the program…obviously you take risks on guys with superb talent, but KU will never be a program that picks and chooses like a Texas or Oklahoma. That being the case, as long as our core is built on quality individuals the rest will take care of itself.

God, I only pray

that man does not keel over anytime soon. He’s also very short – I remember shaking his hands at a rally in Orlando before the Tangerine Bowl. But seriously, no heart attacks for that man, he’s our best shot at really creating a program that will be relevant long after he moves on.

I'll do you one better

Kansas beats Oklahoma at home, who is struggling a bit to find a replacement for Sam Bradford. Despite winning the Big 12 championship and having a record of 12-1, KU is passed over for the national championship by a 12-0 Ohio State team.

Thousands of furious Kansans storm Columbus, demanding the Big Ten be dismantled forever, or the city will be burned to the ground. College football fans from around the nation are inspired by their courage, and ACC Commissioner John Swofford is forced to tear up the BCS Charter at gun point.

A commission appointed by President Barack Obama is formed to create a new college football playoff system. In an ironic twist, Kansas faces Ohio State in Round One of the new playoff, and destroys them 45-17. Kansas then loses in the semis in a hard-fought battle with Florida, 27-24.

Todd Reesing is named Governor immediately following the game, and KU Football will always be synonymous with ending the BCS’ death grip.

Now that's

A lot of next year depend on Meier and Brisoce

I don’t mean to put the load on them but look at the stats. The closest receiver in terms of yards after them is Johnathon Wilson with 573. Sharp and Briscoe have double that.

Yes and no...

they’ll certainly be game planned toward by opposing defenses and I anticipate someone like Wilson, who is very capable, having a bigger year. Also others will step up, we’ve got almost everybody back and if the line can gel quickly helping to establish the running game I think we’ll be ok.

If we have to rely on Meier and Briscoe though, I can’t think of two guys I’d rather have. Both Big, Strong possession receivers.

Texas in the South will likely be the favorite I am assuming…

As far as the North, I know CU, NU, MU fans all think they’ve got a pretty good shot at the North just like Kansas fans do. Level of play might be down in some places but the competition should be just as good.

next year

Looking at our schedule I think the big 12 north we should have 1 loss, most likely Nebraska. The south should be OU and Texas since I think Bradford may come back. Personally I don’t think he is ready, and since their stud DT McCoy is coming back they will still be tough.

Offense should be great and we have depth on the Oline to be okay. I am glad we got bigger on the Dline because they were being pushed around at the beginning of the season. As long as our new LB’s blend in and find their way early we could go 9-3 which is realistic. I think we should expect to go to the Cotton Bowl next year and I would be okay with that.

I don't see how

we lose to Nebraska, to be completely honest with you. Ganz, Lucky, Swift, Peterso(e)n: All gone. That is their whole offense. I think our defense will only be better than last year. Addition-by-subtraction tells me that. No more Brorsen/Larson up front, letting Max O, Laptad, Wheeler and the JUCO guy(s) coming in. We are better there already. As far as LB goes, take out Rivera and Mort, we are better already. Losing Holt hurts, but a very improved front 4, and they will be very improved, will make the transition easier. The secondary is all gravy IMO. I see the Corn scoring no more than 17 on us, with us putting up upwards of 35.

Would love to hear your reasoning though, maybe I could find some middle ground on this, but, as of now, I don’t see a loss to the Corn.

While I'm not Baldjedi I will say...

Nothing is a sure thing and Nebraska will be in the mix next year. Yes they lose a lot but with a team we have only beaten 3 times in the last 30 some years I never count my chickens before they’ve hatched. Helu and Castille return and will be a formidable backfield that might afford Pelini the opportunity to play a little more ball control power style easing the transition to a new QB. Suh has announced he is staying and they return a fair amount of other contributors on defense.

Also the cupboard is not bear in Lincoln…sure Bill Callahan was clearly a horrible coach, but he recruited well while he was there. If you go with the assumption that the primary contributors to the team next year will come from the 05’, 06’, and 07’ classes Nebraska had the #5 class, the #20 class and the #13 class from a recruiting standpoint. Now I know rankings don’t necessarily mean anything without good coaching, but if Bo Pelini turns out to be a good one than they could replace their losses with some strong additions.

As far as Kansas, I wouldn’t assume that by removing Rivera and Mort we are already improved. Yes they don’t defend the spread as well due to being built more for power but they were both all conference backers in 07 and both played injured or recovering from injury this year. In my mind linebacker will be a question mark next year. Up front, I think you’re right we will be better but again we need to be a lot better if we want to claim our defensive front a strength.

Offense with only the interior to replace and probably a more talented group coming in I do think we’ll be better but there will be growing pains much like we experienced with the tackles this year. The good news is the Husker game is in mid Nov. if I’m not mistaken so I hope we have gelled by then.

I guess in closing I would just say I’m not in the Baldjedi camp saying we most likely lose, but I’m also not in the KC88 camp of not seeing it as a possibility. We’ve got some clear advantages and the game looks good on paper right now, but I’ll ask you this…Did anyone see our 2007 coming? OSU, KSU, NU or even CU? I would bet all those fan bases were feeling pretty good about their chances going into that year against us.

I have my own camp? Sweet

Anyone want to join my camp? I know I can get some Crimson Girls to help out! Anyways, I am not sure about losing to Nebraska yet, but I would believe we may have a North loss somewhere if we are not careful. The defense still has lots to prove and our special teams is inconsistent. 2 out of 3 problem areas makes for an upset loss even with our offense.

We should go undefeated in the non-conference and will be upset otherwise.

The North side will provide one loss somewhere if not Nebraska, and we can’t count out Mizzou just because of who they are. I honestly think CU will be improved so we need to be careful there too. KSU, and ISU are wins with our eyes closed, okay a bit cocky but funny.

Texas and Oklahoma are most likely losses, but should be much more competitive. OU loses most of their Oline and experience on their suspect dfense which makes them beatable. Texas Tech should be a win with their offense gone.

9-3 seems acceptable to me and 10-2 is possible.

by BaldJedi on Jan 14, 2009 2:38 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I would agree on CU...

it’s very easy to overlook them but as you know living in Denver like me, there are a hell of a lot of reasons for their struggles this year and most will be resolved by next year. Tons of talent up in Boulder just need it to stay healthy and then make the pieces fit.

as far as your camp…I would join based on the 9-3 prediction, crimson girls and your affinity to choppers but alas I think I’ll stay in my own for now.

Wingo

Arkansas has been after Wingo hard, but guess we have time to see what Mangino’s crew has up their sleeve if they want him bad enough. Wingo does have a friend committed to Arkansas so that doesn’t help either. We can explain to him that the job is his come sophomore year because Crawford and Sharp are gone. We don’t have anyone that is better as of now to take the job from him. He would have a year to develop and maybe get carries here and there to mix it up since he is bigger than Sharp. Since Crawford is a bust so far Wingo could be #2 RB

Well -

we do have Opurum in the wings as well. Boy, if we had Webb, Opurum and Wingo in the backfield with Omigie and McGriff on the wings what kind of running team would we be??? That is some scary talent there.

Toben Opurum

I almost created a new fanpost for this but figured I’d throw it in this thread, as it’s still been getting posts throughout the week.

I just recently got a chance to check out some of the exclusive Rivals info and videos that paid subscribers get and I checked out Toben Opurum’s videos. Let’s just say I’m very impressed and I think he has a great chance to play along with Sharp next season. What I was most impressed with was his ability to come out of the backfield and make catches and then make plays after those catches.

In his Junior year he had 27 catches for 574 yards (21.3 yds/catch) and 6 TDs…on a lot of these he would come out of the backfield and be wide open and that seemed like the reason for the TD’s and yards. His senior year he had more catches but fewer yards and TDs. 31 catches for 228 yards (7.4 yds/catch) and 0 TDs. It seems obvious that opposing teams started keying in on Opurum coming out of the backfield and adjusted nicely. There is no doubt that he has great hands and he came out of the backfield in a shotgun formation.

On the rushing side of things, Opurum rushed only 8 more times his senior year than junior, but managed to get 873 yards rushing with an 8.2 yrds/carry average and 8 TDs. It was a nearly 2 yard/carry better than his Junior year with 4 more TDs.

I could really see this guy splitting carries with Sharp the way B-Mac and he did in ‘07. He could also be really key for the passing game as a screen option and check down if Reesing can’t find any receivers. Even though he has some size (6’’2, 229) he really has some great speed and quickness.

I’m excited for this guy and had to share it. Can’t wait for Spring Ball.

Anyone else have a particular recruit they’re pumped about?

A little more

Jordan Webb can really run a lot better than I expected. His first highlight on his tape is of a very Todd-like scramble.

Also, Christian Matthews can REALLY run. He is fast, shifty, and has size. He definitely can throw a deep ball but I think other passes are still up in the air. (no pun intended)

QB should be a reallly interesting spot next season.

I got 2

I like the Qb’s mentioned but defense wins championships so I am going with DE Young, he tracks down runners and smashes them and he is enrolled at KU NOW!!!! He will be practicing and working out with the team this whole spring and summer so he could be a freshman starter. Kande will be sweet for us also. He has great cover skills and he was debated as one with upside to be considered a 5 star player down the road. DE and CB are huge things to have on a defense and they will contribute next year I bet.

by BaldJedi on Jan 15, 2009 4:42 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Most excited about...

If I have to pick one, it’s Omigie. I realize TO’s physical gifts (rare combination of size/speed), but as I believe I stated in my initial response to this thread, I think think Joc is gonna have a good, solid year. He will get first dibs on the #2 job, and, also as stated above, I believe will supplant Jake Sharp as the majority carrier, allowing OCEW to use Jake in a variety of different roles. But, back to Omigie. Ever since I first watched the tape on this guy, he has been my favorite recruit in this class. He may not be a burner, but the mid-4.4’s is a good range to be in, especially if you’re 6’4" and have the wingspan of a Gargoyle. Having an option like him for the QB of the future will be a HUGE asset. And, once he gets the ball, he is very tough to bring down. I think he’ll get some reps as a true freshmen as probably the #5 or #6 WR, and then put on 15-20 lbs. of solid muscle in the offseason, and come back with a vengeance, much like Dez did this year. (Not predicting Dez numbers, but the same kind of impact perhaps.)

That said, I am also very excited about Christian Matthews. I would really like to see if he can run our offense effectively. Because, if he can, he has to be the QBOTF. Think of all the scrambling Reesing does, but being done at sub-4.5 speed. The third on my list would have to be Darian Kelly. Not much talk on him, but I think a move to OLB might be in his future. Moves well, projectable size, heavy hitter… Would be a great Rover LB/S type :)

nice

good points.

We’ll see about Crawford, I just didn’t see it this year. I’ll give him credit for finally working hard and getting some good special teams reps but he just didn’t show me anything running the ball. I hope you’re right, though.

he hasn't shown anything but small flashes yet...

but I still hold some hope for him next year myself. I think if you look at JUCO runningbacks in general, especially those not coming in at semester, there does tend to be an almost 1 season adjustment period.

Not sure where I saw the breakdown and maybe I’ll do a little research myself but the last few classes of top JUCO RB’s all struggled in year 1 (their Junior years) but went on to be fairly productive in their senior campaigns. I’ll try to see if I can’t find that and if not I might look into it while watching the playoffs this weekend. Would make an interesting analysis.

Kevin Young, Tyrone Sellers, Jordan Webb, Tyler Patmon…really enjoyed the interviews with these three and think that while they may not be immediate stars they’ve got some tremendous longterm upside and potential to be leaders.

Deshaun Sand…Tony Sands son…enough said.

Randall Dent…great upside in the middle

Toben Opurum…been playing in a spread all his list

Kande, Linton…I think these two will be VERY good when it’s all said and done.

THE class

I think we all can come up with a few guys that we like in this class. That excites me since we all find a few guys we like because we know this is a strong class that should be able to keep the momentum we have going. Since we have a strong team next year this class has the chance to grow and isn’t needed yet.

You have to like the fact that we do not need them yes as opposed to years passed when we were begging for talent to make us better. We can get better with this class, but they can do it as sophomores instead of hoping they are ready immediately. It is a great day to be a Jayhawk.
