Kansas vs. Siena Open Game Thread

Siena Saints @ Kansas Jayhawks

Haven't seen one posted yet so I thought I better get a thread up.  I'll probably miss a bit of this one myself, but here's to a comfortable Jayhawk win.

Those of you who have the opportunity to watch this one local, help out those of us out of the area with some updates if you can.  Have fun and enjoy.

My prediction...KU sluggish at the start, pulls away a little right before the half and wins comfortably by the end.  Here's to lots of dunks by the Morris twins and threes abound for Tyrel Reed (a couple special requests for some readers out there, you know who you are).

anyone out there...

like I said I’ll probably miss the first half, but if anyone who can watch wants to give updates at the TV timeouts or whenever it would be much appreciated by us non-locals…

Also if one of you has a link to a site streaming the game feel free to share…

I'm here.

Sorry, I just remembered about this game.

But I should be here for the rest of the game, so I’m free to chat.

Agreed.

Like Denver predicted, a very sluggish start.

I’m not worried or anything, but it hasn’t been good so far.

I'll check back 2nd half...

I love Marcus Morris.

Those two shots have been pretty ridiculous.

And a great block by Kieff. This might be the Morris twins breakout game.

by rockchalk on Jan 6, 2009 7:16 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Gotta love Releford getting in early.

And playing really well. He is a guy who seems to get a lot better with PT, and he always seems to have a presence while in there.

by rockchalk on Jan 6, 2009 7:23 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Wow.

Yeah, we started out sluggish, but talk about turning on the gas.

An 18-1 run, and this game is way, way over.

So far, Releford has played fantastic, and the Morris twins have both played really well too. Sherron, after dominating against Tennessee, has played a very minor role thus far.

Good, Little is in. Hopefully he can get plenty of PT today, so he can maybe play plenty of minutes against Michigan State.

by rockchalk on Jan 6, 2009 7:29 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It's not that bad

If Sherron and Cole don’t perform. It’ll teach everyone else that they can’t always depend on those two.

Grab up some momentum before the Michigan State game.

Nice offensively, bad defensively.

Lot of standing and watching Siena shoot except for a couple of Cole blocks.

How are we giving up 50% shooting so far?

I can’t watch the game cause I’m in florida and I just now tuned in to the espn gamecast, so can someone enlighten me as to how our defense is so lackadaisical?

by 2.1 seconds left on Jan 6, 2009 7:50 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Lackadasical is a really good word to describe it.

We’re not really moving our feet. They are knocking down plenty of shots that we are playing fine defense on, and they shouldn’t consistently make, but we still are playing poor defense.

by rockchalk on Jan 6, 2009 7:51 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Wow.

We have not played well on defense. At all.

On offense, we have looked quite excellent, especially Tyrel and Travis and the Morris twins, but our defense has been terrible.

by rockchalk on Jan 6, 2009 7:51 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yep.

And doing lots of good with them.

Good for him, too, I think he could be a solid rotation player for us this year and in the future.

Tyrel has looked awesome, too, although he still isn’t the best defensive player. Still gets beat.

by rockchalk on Jan 6, 2009 7:52 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If releford could contribute to the half court offense

Then I think he could be a really good rotation player for us, with his athleticism and hustle.
He seems like he could be a turnover machine though.

by 2.1 seconds left on Jan 6, 2009 7:54 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yeah.

And again, they are making some shots they shouldn’t make in the second half. But even if they shoot a more normal percentage, we still aren’t playing very good D.

by rockchalk on Jan 6, 2009 7:53 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Is it just me

Or should Tyrel take a lot more shots?

by wrigleyrocker12 on Jan 6, 2009 7:53 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not that bad I guess

Sounds like from the way our defense was/their hot shooting a 13 point lead isn’t the worst thing that could happen at the half. Hopefully we wear these guys out in the second half, but the worst is probably over as most upsets are sprung by a hot start and decent lead from the underdogs.

by 2.1 seconds left on Jan 6, 2009 7:56 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

D's a little scary.

Hawks went on a 20-1 run and now it seems like they don’t take Siena seriously. If we miss a few shots it could get too interesting.

Releford and Reed looked fantastic.

The Morris twins looked really good, too, although they both had plenty of defensive lapses.

As a whole, our defense played pretty poorly, although their 38 first-half points had plenty to do with them making plenty of shots you wouldn’t expect them to make.

Cole and Sherron have played alright.

OK, I'm back.

West Virginia couldn’t quite catch up to Connecticut, and Georgia-Ga. Tech is closing in on the finish.

Ohio State got creamed against Michigan State in the Breslin Center. Interesting, mostly because we play them on Saturday. They looked good, tonight.

by Denverjhawk on Jan 6, 2009 8:15 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yep.

Really, besides that one 20-1 run, we have not played that well.

Although, this game does have trap game written all over it. Coming off a very emotional, high-intensity win against Tennessee, and looking ahead to a big challenge in East Lansing against the Spartans.

Our offense is playing pretty well, I guess, even excluding the fantastic run.

by Denverjhawk on Jan 6, 2009 8:22 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah.

This year, with the Jayhawk TV Network and our National Championship last year, every single game was on the Full Court package that wasn’t otherwise on ESPN/ESPNU/etc., so it was a good investment.

At least you get to go to a game live, though. I went to the UMKC game when I was in town for the KU-Texas game, but that’s all I’ll see all year.

by Denverjhawk on Jan 6, 2009 8:33 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't know...

Tulsa has a ridiculous offense, and a nearly-as-bad defense. And Ball State was pretty damn good for awhile, and could have made some noise against really good teams, just never got the chance before they lost the MAC Championship. And Nate Davis is awesome.

So, I’ll probably check it out. TCU is beating Texas Tech, in entirely unrelated basketball news.

depends on if Cal is a legit contender...

he is certainly explosive enough and can put up numbers, but the reality is if you’re not in the public eye all year (especially west coast guys) you don’t stand a chance.

Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.

by Denverjhawk on Jan 6, 2009 8:54 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Definitely.

He is a beast, ridiculous, all of that fun stuff.

Probably going to be the best RB in the country next year. And if Cal is halfway successful, he will at least be in the discussion. But a lot like Run-DMC, he probably won’t actually win unless they go to the Rose Bowl or something.

by rockchalk on Jan 6, 2009 8:55 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It's a must for Cal to be in the Rose Bowl...

in order for him to win, in my opinion…but you guys probably see him more living in PAC 10 land

by Denverjhawk on Jan 6, 2009 8:56 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Agree with both of you. Too bad for him Cal has a habit of blowing any chance they have at a good bowl. Cal definitely has a shot next year, if they can find a consistent QB. Their D is stiff enough.

Got the place rocking. Like, really loud, at least for a game against Siena.

Then Cole stuffed the crap out of a ball off a Siena guy, we got the ball back, Sherron took another three and missed it, but then Cole got the board and stuffed it in.

And then we have a chance to go up 12, and Tyshawn misses a fast-break, wide-open layup. Yuck.

Why is cole taking our free throws?

I mean, he’s good for a big man but you figure they could get it to one of the other white guys

by 2.1 seconds left on Jan 6, 2009 9:01 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

We couldn't get it in to anyone else.

So Brady just threw it up to Cole, cause the guy guarding him was like 8 inches shorter, to not get a 5-second call. He was then promptly fouled.

The time before, Cole was going up for a dunk and got fouled off a rebound.

We aren’t trying to get him the ball, it’s just working out like that.

by rockchalk on Jan 6, 2009 9:02 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I figured that was the case

but our guys seriously have to learn how to screen on the inbounds to free up designated guys

by 2.1 seconds left on Jan 6, 2009 9:03 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Agreed.

All we do is Sherron just does a little juke on his guy and runs to the baseline, Tyrel kinda-sorta stands there, half-moving, and Cole just stood there as the outlet, I suppose. I think Cole did set a little mini-screen for Tyrel, but it didn’t do much of anything.

Who knew we would have to wait until 20 seconds left before starting that chant.

I was going to put up a more comprehensive Tennessee game recap tonight, but I think I’ll instead do a recap of tonight’s game. I’ll give a mini-Tennessee preview too, but the main course will be a review of tonight. Should show up really late, though, and that is PST time.

Wow, last Jayhawk Sports Network telecast of the year. At least, based off what Dave Armstrong just said.

Anyways, we should get to Michigan State content Thursday.

Solid win.

It’s easy to say now, but this really is a pretty good team. I mean, they returned everyone from a team that demolished the MAAC (not a terrible league, actually) and beat Vandy by like 20 in the NCAAs. Almost beat Villanova, too, IIRC.

Have a couple of ridiculous athletes who can shoot threes and get to the hoop incredibly easily. Like, Sherron Collins-esque, even. Amazing.

Our defense was, for the most part, crap, but our offense played really well for the most part, and we knocked down our FT’s when it counted.

In a lot of ways this game was similar to the Tenn game

We put up a big run early and weathered the storm thereafter. It will be nice to see when this team learns how to step on throats. In all three of our losses we’ve had our opponents on the ropes and we let them back in. We need to get a little eye of the tiger going

by labbadabba on Jan 6, 2009 9:16 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

the trials and tribulations of youth...

I think we’ll see us become more effective at the stepping on the throat part once the team works through Cole and Sherron better once they have a lead. Not sure about tonight but I know in that Arizona game it just seemed like once we were ahead Cole never got a rhythm going

I don't think Cole

had a rhythm period in that game. Come to think of it, Cole doesn’t really strike me as a guy with a lot of rhythm anyway – I really don’t want to see if him tearing up the club. It would be like Mark Madsen x10

thus Miami, thus Super Mario – how good has he been? Was he the steal of the draft or what?

/I'm awesome

But not as awesome as chalmers. He’s already got the heat record for steals in a game, and tied the heat record for three-pointers in a game by a rookie. And he’s come close to a triple double before with 8 rebounds and 7 assists. Add in that he’s already earned dwyane wade’s trust (perhaps the most important factor for him) and Pat Riley struck another home run with his player analysis.

He’s just in the right system…which, in the NBA, is the most important thing in one’s career. I admit I was disappointed for him when he fell to the 2nd round, but when I heard the next day that the heat had traded for him I knew that the best possible thing had happened for him.

by Denverjhawk on Jan 6, 2009 9:57 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No doubt

I remember his recruiting saga last year. He’s worth the hype – BUT, Boeckman was a Heisman finalist last year and is a steady presence in the pocket, if its me and I’m coaching the biggest game of the year, I’m going with the senior QB who’s been there.

Also – what was up with Pryor wussing out and running out of bounds on plays where he easily could have picked up 10 more? The dude’s 6’6" 230 lbs and runs 4.4 – I’m sure he can take a hit.

by labbadabba on Jan 6, 2009 10:00 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Agree on both points...

Biggest game of the year hands down for Tressel and Boeckman gives them a better chance to win., OSU needed to win this game to change the momentum and perception of the program. Not that they are bad off but no one takes them seriously right now, right or wrong.

Well that won't help

our RPI… Something tells me Arkansas will be ranked this time next week.

On your 2nd point...

I noticed the bail outs by Pryor too and not sure what to think…on the one hand I guess he is smart and trying to stay healthy. On the other hand though, not exactly the fire you want to see from your QB in a big game.

Agreed

It was just a game where the D had Pryor figured out, and Boeckman brought a different element to the offense, so it kinda threw Texas off a bit. But they had the right idea, Big 12 Ds never face a run threat, so running was their best option, really.

Insanity is just a state of mind.

True

but they weren’t exactly running a spread either. I think having a traditional pocket passer with C. Wells in the backfield would have been a big chang-up. hindsight – 20/20. I just know that when Boeckman threw the touchdown to Pryor and then Pryor tried the 2-point conversion that it wasn’t happening.

Not sure what the merit is in the QB platoon. I’m glad that was VT’s philosophy last year though…

I think you answered your own question...

The merit in a QB platoon is that you won’t achieve to the level of expectations…it just doesn’t work the majority of the time.

Exactly

Look at Cal, not exactly a platoon, but with QB changes weekly, it just kills your offense.

HATE!!!

is the only word I can use to describe the wildcat, hogwild, rebelcat, whatever the hell you want to call it offense.

I hated how the media jumped all over it. It’s a new running formation, so what? It’s not changing how teams game plan.

Wouldn't work in Big XII

At least wouldn’t be that big of an advantage…since all our QBs can run anyways.
