Kansas vs. Siena Open Game Thread

Siena Saints at Kansas Jayhawks, Jan 6, 2009 7:00 PM CST

Haven't seen one posted yet so I thought I better get a thread up.  I'll probably miss a bit of this one myself, but here's to a comfortable Jayhawk win.

Those of you who have the opportunity to watch this one local, help out those of us out of the area with some updates if you can.  Have fun and enjoy.

My prediction...KU sluggish at the start, pulls away a little right before the half and wins comfortably by the end.  Here's to lots of dunks by the Morris twins and threes abound for Tyrel Reed (a couple special requests for some readers out there, you know who you are).

like I said I’ll probably miss the first half, but if anyone who can watch wants to give updates at the TV timeouts or whenever it would be much appreciated by us non-locals…

Also if one of you has a link to a site streaming the game feel free to share…

I'm here.

Sorry, I just remembered about this game.

But I should be here for the rest of the game, so I’m free to chat.

Agreed.

Like Denver predicted, a very sluggish start.

I’m not worried or anything, but it hasn’t been good so far.

I love Marcus Morris.

Those two shots have been pretty ridiculous.

And a great block by Kieff. This might be the Morris twins breakout game.

by rockchalk on Jan 6, 2009 7:16 PM CST up reply actions

Gotta love Releford getting in early.

And playing really well. He is a guy who seems to get a lot better with PT, and he always seems to have a presence while in there.

by rockchalk on Jan 6, 2009 7:23 PM CST reply actions

Wow.

Yeah, we started out sluggish, but talk about turning on the gas.

An 18-1 run, and this game is way, way over.

So far, Releford has played fantastic, and the Morris twins have both played really well too. Sherron, after dominating against Tennessee, has played a very minor role thus far.

Good, Little is in. Hopefully he can get plenty of PT today, so he can maybe play plenty of minutes against Michigan State.

by rockchalk on Jan 6, 2009 7:29 PM CST reply actions

It's not that bad

If Sherron and Cole don’t perform. It’ll teach everyone else that they can’t always depend on those two.

Lot of standing and watching Siena shoot except for a couple of Cole blocks.

How are we giving up 50% shooting so far?

I can’t watch the game cause I’m in florida and I just now tuned in to the espn gamecast, so can someone enlighten me as to how our defense is so lackadaisical?

by 2.1 seconds left on Jan 6, 2009 7:50 PM CST reply actions

Lackadasical is a really good word to describe it.

We’re not really moving our feet. They are knocking down plenty of shots that we are playing fine defense on, and they shouldn’t consistently make, but we still are playing poor defense.

by rockchalk on Jan 6, 2009 7:51 PM CST up reply actions

Wow.

We have not played well on defense. At all.

On offense, we have looked quite excellent, especially Tyrel and Travis and the Morris twins, but our defense has been terrible.

by rockchalk on Jan 6, 2009 7:51 PM CST reply actions

Yep.

And doing lots of good with them.

Good for him, too, I think he could be a solid rotation player for us this year and in the future.

Tyrel has looked awesome, too, although he still isn’t the best defensive player. Still gets beat.

by rockchalk on Jan 6, 2009 7:52 PM CST up reply actions

If releford could contribute to the half court offense

Then I think he could be a really good rotation player for us, with his athleticism and hustle.
He seems like he could be a turnover machine though.

by 2.1 seconds left on Jan 6, 2009 7:54 PM CST up reply actions

yeah.

And again, they are making some shots they shouldn’t make in the second half. But even if they shoot a more normal percentage, we still aren’t playing very good D.

by rockchalk on Jan 6, 2009 7:53 PM CST up reply actions

Is it just me

Or should Tyrel take a lot more shots?

"Check the magic of a winning season and there are always reasons beyond the talent." Ned Colleti

by wrigleyrocker12 on Jan 6, 2009 7:53 PM CST reply actions

Not that bad I guess

Sounds like from the way our defense was/their hot shooting a 13 point lead isn’t the worst thing that could happen at the half. Hopefully we wear these guys out in the second half, but the worst is probably over as most upsets are sprung by a hot start and decent lead from the underdogs.

by 2.1 seconds left on Jan 6, 2009 7:56 PM CST up reply actions

D's a little scary.

Hawks went on a 20-1 run and now it seems like they don’t take Siena seriously. If we miss a few shots it could get too interesting.

Releford and Reed looked fantastic.

The Morris twins looked really good, too, although they both had plenty of defensive lapses.

As a whole, our defense played pretty poorly, although their 38 first-half points had plenty to do with them making plenty of shots you wouldn’t expect them to make.

Cole and Sherron have played alright.

Yep.

Really, besides that one 20-1 run, we have not played that well.

Although, this game does have trap game written all over it. Coming off a very emotional, high-intensity win against Tennessee, and looking ahead to a big challenge in East Lansing against the Spartans.

Our offense is playing pretty well, I guess, even excluding the fantastic run.

by Owen on Jan 6, 2009 8:22 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah.

This year, with the Jayhawk TV Network and our National Championship last year, every single game was on the Full Court package that wasn’t otherwise on ESPN/ESPNU/etc., so it was a good investment.

At least you get to go to a game live, though. I went to the UMKC game when I was in town for the KU-Texas game, but that’s all I’ll see all year.

I don't know...

Tulsa has a ridiculous offense, and a nearly-as-bad defense. And Ball State was pretty damn good for awhile, and could have made some noise against really good teams, just never got the chance before they lost the MAC Championship. And Nate Davis is awesome.

So, I’ll probably check it out. TCU is beating Texas Tech, in entirely unrelated basketball news.

Probably going to be the best RB in the country next year. And if Cal is halfway successful, he will at least be in the discussion. But a lot like Run-DMC, he probably won’t actually win unless they go to the Rose Bowl or something.

Then Cole stuffed the crap out of a ball off a Siena guy, we got the ball back, Sherron took another three and missed it, but then Cole got the board and stuffed it in.

by 2.1 seconds left on Jan 6, 2009 9:01 PM CST reply actions

We couldn't get it in to anyone else.

So Brady just threw it up to Cole, cause the guy guarding him was like 8 inches shorter, to not get a 5-second call. He was then promptly fouled.

The time before, Cole was going up for a dunk and got fouled off a rebound.

We aren’t trying to get him the ball, it’s just working out like that.

by rockchalk on Jan 6, 2009 9:02 PM CST up reply actions

I figured that was the case

but our guys seriously have to learn how to screen on the inbounds to free up designated guys

by 2.1 seconds left on Jan 6, 2009 9:03 PM CST reply actions

Agreed.

All we do is Sherron just does a little juke on his guy and runs to the baseline, Tyrel kinda-sorta stands there, half-moving, and Cole just stood there as the outlet, I suppose. I think Cole did set a little mini-screen for Tyrel, but it didn’t do much of anything.

Solid win.

It’s easy to say now, but this really is a pretty good team. I mean, they returned everyone from a team that demolished the MAAC (not a terrible league, actually) and beat Vandy by like 20 in the NCAAs. Almost beat Villanova, too, IIRC.

Have a couple of ridiculous athletes who can shoot threes and get to the hoop incredibly easily. Like, Sherron Collins-esque, even. Amazing.

Our defense was, for the most part, crap, but our offense played really well for the most part, and we knocked down our FT’s when it counted.

In a lot of ways this game was similar to the Tenn game

We put up a big run early and weathered the storm thereafter. It will be nice to see when this team learns how to step on throats. In all three of our losses we’ve had our opponents on the ropes and we let them back in. We need to get a little eye of the tiger going

the trials and tribulations of youth...

I think we’ll see us become more effective at the stepping on the throat part once the team works through Cole and Sherron better once they have a lead. Not sure about tonight but I know in that Arizona game it just seemed like once we were ahead Cole never got a rhythm going

I don't think Cole

Nice step up.

The Morris twins, Tyrel, and Travis all were very solid in the first half. Then, Sherron and Cole fired it up when needed in the second. The young guys just have to work on forty minutes.

thus Miami, thus Super Mario – how good has he been? Was he the steal of the draft or what?

Yes.

But he dropped into a perfect situation – defensive minded team with a superstar that handles the ball a lot of the time. I said all the time leading up to the draft that if he could get in a situation like daniel gibson he would succeed.

/I'm awesome

But not as awesome as chalmers. He’s already got the heat record for steals in a game, and tied the heat record for three-pointers in a game by a rookie. And he’s come close to a triple double before with 8 rebounds and 7 assists. Add in that he’s already earned dwyane wade’s trust (perhaps the most important factor for him) and Pat Riley struck another home run with his player analysis.

He’s just in the right system…which, in the NBA, is the most important thing in one’s career. I admit I was disappointed for him when he fell to the 2nd round, but when I heard the next day that the heat had traded for him I knew that the best possible thing had happened for him.

by Owen on Jan 6, 2009 9:57 PM CST up reply actions

No doubt

I remember his recruiting saga last year. He’s worth the hype – BUT, Boeckman was a Heisman finalist last year and is a steady presence in the pocket, if its me and I’m coaching the biggest game of the year, I’m going with the senior QB who’s been there.

Also – what was up with Pryor wussing out and running out of bounds on plays where he easily could have picked up 10 more? The dude’s 6’6" 230 lbs and runs 4.4 – I’m sure he can take a hit.

by labbadabba on Jan 6, 2009 10:00 PM CST up reply actions

Agree on both points...

Biggest game of the year hands down for Tressel and Boeckman gives them a better chance to win., OSU needed to win this game to change the momentum and perception of the program. Not that they are bad off but no one takes them seriously right now, right or wrong.

Agreed

It was just a game where the D had Pryor figured out, and Boeckman brought a different element to the offense, so it kinda threw Texas off a bit. But they had the right idea, Big 12 Ds never face a run threat, so running was their best option, really.

Insanity is just a state of mind.

by KTJ on Jan 6, 2009 9:59 PM CST up reply actions

True

but they weren’t exactly running a spread either. I think having a traditional pocket passer with C. Wells in the backfield would have been a big chang-up. hindsight – 20/20. I just know that when Boeckman threw the touchdown to Pryor and then Pryor tried the 2-point conversion that it wasn’t happening.

Not sure what the merit is in the QB platoon. I’m glad that was VT’s philosophy last year though…

I don't have a problem with an expansion team winning

especially since I’m hoping KC gets a team at some point. I just think their uni’s are dumb. Other than that, the team has a great make-up. Or had…Selanne, Pronger, both Niedermeier’s – good stuff

Yeah.

I live in Orange County, and I used to get plenty of free tickets to the Ducks games through my dad’s work. Wasn’t a huge fan by any stretch, but grew to kind of like the team. Went to like 10 games over like 2 years.

Sucks that Burke left, though.

Well

Time for me to be heading off. I got hooked on Fallout 3, so that takes the place of KU football, for now.

And not that I’m all that active now, but I’m going to slow down here, school back in session next week, college decisions, life, baseball and all that good stuff. Keep up the good work, and I’ll still try to drop in when possible and express my thoughts(whether you want them or not!).

Insanity is just a state of mind.

by KTJ on Jan 6, 2009 10:08 PM CST reply actions

Whoa.

School back next week? I started yesterday.

And are you a HS senior? I am too, so that would be kind of weird, I suppose. Where do you want to go to college, if you don’t mind me asking. Just curious…

by rockchalk on Jan 6, 2009 11:11 PM CST up reply actions

Totally fine

Yeah, high school senior. Technically, school started today. But our school gets away with like a mess-around week with no classes, and it counts for regular days. It’s awesome. Graduate May 28th!

As far as college, it’s pretty open right now. My stupid counselor messed up a few apps and never sent them, so I’m pretty screwed. Hoping to get one or two more to respond. Probably local school, either Butte JuCo, or Chico St. Not sure. I really gave Kansas some thought, but it just doesn’t make sense.

Insanity is just a state of mind.

by KTJ on Jan 6, 2009 11:15 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed on Kansas.

Were I to still live in Kansas (I grew up there ‘till I was 12), it would make a lot more sense. With the cheaper tuition and all that jazz. But, it doesn’t make nearly as much sense when you have to pay out-of-state tuition.

Good luck with the college search. I know plenty of kids from my school (Santa Margarita, in case you’ve heard of it before…) that are going to Chico.

by KTJ on Jan 6, 2009 10:29 PM CST up reply actions

Exactly.

I hate their guts, but they are the best dynasty in current college football, and definitely have a claim to being the best team in college football this year. Not the best resume, and they certainly shouldn’t be in the MNC game, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see them win if there were a playoff.

by rockchalk on Jan 6, 2009 11:14 PM CST up reply actions

Even with their media exposure, most people still think that the Pac-10 is a softer conference, but they manage to lose one conference game per year.

In reference to Anderson

I think the main thing is that his team is always playing hard…and he’s had less heralded recruits than quin snyder did. Also, their style is such that unless you’re ready for it you’ll get run out of the gym. I think that especially against the make up of our team this year, they’re going to have some success

He's a safety

3 Star kid out of Girard KS…he was hurt the majority of his Junior year otherwise many think he could have been a 4 star. Very athletic 6’2 200 lbs 4.5 40 time….could end up being in that LB/Safety hybrid role that seems to be a possible trend against the spread.

Man we've got a lot of Safties

no CB’s though. I was going through the past recruiting classes on Rivals and looking at our past 4-Star recruits, not very many of them panned out. We’ve had much more luck with 2-star recruits. SO, by that standard we’re having a really shitty recruiting season

by labbadabba on Jan 6, 2009 10:44 PM CST up reply actions

Well...

you’ve got Rubles, Patmon and Dexter Linton that are all considered CB’s…wouldn’t be surprised if Kande played CB some as well. as far as the 2star 4star business hopefully our luck changes.

I agree

Its very rare that you get a Briscoe or Chris Harris (what happened to him this year?) with that kind of impact unless its a very highly ranked recruit or one that just fits your system perfectly.

by 2.1 seconds left on Jan 6, 2009 10:49 PM CST up reply actions

I think part if it too

is seeing that great big 4th star. When you have 20 2 and 3 star recruits and you have 1 4-star, you expect that guy to be some sort of uber player

by labbadabba on Jan 6, 2009 10:50 PM CST up reply actions

If you look at our commits for this year...

many of our 3-stars are rated as a 5.7 by rivals…while all of our 4-stars are 5.8…the good news here is we have a lot of 3’s very close to 4’s…but as you say the bad news is there isn’t that much difference between the two.

In reality none of it matters till they do it on the field.

Whats your prognosis for that game denver

I’m thinking that this team really plays to the level of their competition, and hopefully we come out loose and have a shot at the end. MSU is so inconsistent though (I’m speaking of over the last couple years) that I think we could even walk away with this one if things go our way early.

by 2.1 seconds left on Jan 6, 2009 10:57 PM CST up reply actions

I think you nailed it with your last sentence.

Things need to go our way early. I’m still afraid of getting down early on the road. Not sure how our young guys will handle that.

by Warden11 on Jan 6, 2009 10:58 PM CST up reply actions

my biggest concern is that we didn't respond well...

in Tuscon against Arizona…that fan base won’t be nearly as rowdy as MSU so it will be another level of road environment for these kids…keep the crowd out and avoid the second half let down and we’ve got a shot. I think your right in saying things need to go well early or it could get away from us quickly.
